    Guys,
Dan Fogelberg wrote leader of the band in honor and respect for his father who was hospitalized at the time. He finally understood his musical heritage with his father's story. His father did get to hear the song before passing away.😊

This is one of Fogelberg's most personal songs. It's a tribute to his father, Lawrence Fogelberg, who was a band director.
The senior Fogelberg began his musical journey directing high school bands in his home state of Illinois, first in Peoria and then at Pekin. He married Margaret Irvine, a talented singer who directed her sorority chorus, in 1946, and the couple had three children. Dan was the youngest, born in 1951. By this time, his dad was the band director at Bradley University in Peoria, where the family lived. The band would play concerts and perform at basketball and football games; Dan often told a story about his father letting him "conduct" the band when he was four years old, standing in front of his father with a baton while his dad did the job behind him. "It was an amazing feeling," Dan recounted. "It felt both very magical and powerful. And I was fearless."
Fogelberg recorded this for his 1979 album Phoenix, but felt it was too sentimental for the album and didn't release it until 1981 on The Innocent Age. His father died the following year.
When Fogelberg wrote this song, he didn't hear it as a hit, but the song expressed something that many children have trouble articulating: a love for their father. The intimacy of the song actually broadened its appeal, and it became one of his most enduring songs and one that fans would often mention to him as one they connected with.
The line, "Thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go," is a reference to Fogelberg dropping out of college. He attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, but decided to leave in the middle of a semester to pursue music - not what most parents want to hear. Fogelberg's father was disappointed, but supported his son's decision, telling Dan to try it for a year. The music thing worked out well: Dan drove to Los Angeles, got a record deal, and became one of the top-selling solo artists of the '70s.
The song concludes with part of a performance by the UCLA Band of the John Philip Sousa march "The Washington Post" arranged by Fogelberg's father.

Anytime I think of this song I cry. I grew up in a musical family. My dad sang and played the guitar. He taught me to sing this song when I was just a little girl. Every time he pulled out his guitar, I would beg him to play it while I sang. It became our song. One day several years after he died (he died young) I was coming home from work late at night. I had a sudden longing for my dad and I started weeping as I drove. This song came on the radio. I had not sung it or even thought about it in years - and there it was randomly on the radio. I sang along and still remembered every word. It was a hug from my dad on the other side.

Dan was a great story teller through all of his songs. "Same Auld Lang Syne" really happened and is always played at Christmas time. One of his first hits "Run for the Roses" he was commissioned by the Kentucky Derby to write a song for the upcoming Derby that year. While he lived in south western Colorado in the San Juan mountain's he owned horses. I had the pleasure to see him twice at Red Rocks. RIP Dan you are truly missed.

Dan Fogelberg had one of the purest, most sincere voices of all time, and he was a masterful story teller through his thought-provoking lyrics, as captured in this loving and deeply emotional tribute to his father.
Probably one of my all-time favorite love ballads is "Longer", which perfectly embodies the passion of true and undying devotion. Also check out the haunting "Same Old Lang Syne", which poignantly speculates on a nostalgic, "what if" relationship from the past.
Sadly, Dan lost his battle with cancer and was taken far too soon, but the genius and beauty of his music live on.

Thank you so much for listening to this song. I have been requesting Dan Fogelberg for some time now and I am glad you started with "Leader Of The Band", which is my favorite song from him. He is an extremely talented singer and he wrote all of his own songs. He really became popular in the late seventies into the early 80's. Sadly, we lost him in 2007 at an early age but his music will live on forever. One song that never gets mentioned but is one of his best songs is "Missing You". It was released in late 1982.

Such a gorgeous and tender song!! Dan Fogelberg said that if he could have only been given one song to write in his life, “Leader of the Band” would have been his choice. He said this song “wrote itself” quickly and he didn’t even intend for it to be recorded, let alone be released as a single. I cannot listen to this song without my eyes puddling up on the last verse. I wish we had thought to play this at our father’s funeral ten years ago - he was a pianist and even led a band for several years.

Another great singer/song writer/musician taken before his time. He was 56 when he succumbed to cancer. I absolutely love his rendition of "Rhythm of the Rain." It's one of those songs that when it's over, you immediately hit the re-play so you can hear it again. Once is never enough.
"Run for the Roses" is another great song. It talks about the horses bred to run in the Kentucky Derby. I get choked up over my own horses whenever I hear it. Such a beautiful song. If you close your eyes when you listen, you can see everything he's talking about. The babies being born to them laying in a field enjoying the sun, having no clue what lies ahead. The sleek, muscular bodies heading down the back stretch to finish, going with everything they can give...such amazing animals horses are.
"There's A Place In The World For A Gambler" and "Lonely in Love" are two more great songs. To me, they are both one of those songs where after you're done listening to it, you just sit there and say, "Wow!"
If you like the blues, then you need to listen to this one, "Road Beneath My Wheels."

Wow, I love this song. The tribute to his father is extraordinary. His father was a teacher and band leader. Somehow Dan (RIP) felt like family. The simplicity of the instrumentation in "Leader of the Band" is perfect for the emotion, and when the brass quintet comes in for a short phrase I feel it all the way to my toes. I was turned on to Dan by a friend way back in 1974 when "Souvenirs" came out. I played "Part of the Plan" over and over. It would be a great one for you to react to. Also, "Same Old Lang Syne" from the album "The Innocent Age" (same album as "Leader of the Band") is one of those songs I heard first while driving, and had to sit in a parking lot until it finished before I could get out of the car.

I lost my dad last month at 76, and my mom to cancer in 2012 at 59. I have them to thank for much of my wide range in musical taste; we almost always had music playing somewhere in the house and ALWAYS in the car. I've been working my way through your videos of older tunes and am loving watching you discover music I've loved my whole life. This song is so beautiful, but hits different now that both of my parents are gone.
You've already covered most of my mom's favorites, but my dad loved the instrumentals from the 50s and 60s: Popcorn by Hot Butter, Beep Beep by the Playmates, Tequila by the Champs, Raunchy by Bill Justus, Rebel Rouser by Duane Eddy, Teen Beat by Sandy Nelson, Baby Elephant Walk by Lawrence Welk... so many great tunes :)

DF was the greatest influence on my singing and playing in 70's and 80's. Totally unique talent! He could paint a picture with his words and melody like no other. I could listen to his harmonising to himself for many hours. Rest in Peace Dan.

What I really like is the album version of this song because at the very end of it you can faintly hear a brass band playing a bit of a John Phillip Sousa song as the song fades out. I just love that little touch. Dan was such a poet & I just loved how he put words together.

I live this song. I graduated art school in 1984 (which my dad had major reservations about). As a present for letting me follow my dreams, I did a portrait of my dad and framed it with last verse as a thank you.

He's from where i grew up. A lot of my friends knew him and played in bands with him before he became famous. I never met him. He was famous before I got serious about playing. He had a good reputation around there before he was famous. His dad of course taught music in a local high school hence this song.

I always loved this song when it came out. I was in high school at the time in the early 80s. Haven't heard it in many years. Really made me tear up, as the anniversary of me losing my dad to cancer is coming up on 12/22. It'll be 15 years. I miss him so much. It hasn't gotten any easier. If anything, the more time that goes by the more that I miss him. Thanks for sharing.

I'm delighted you have finally discovered this exquisitely talented musician. He wrote epic song after epic song, so many of which just grip you at a soul level. A great way to go next would be with a holiday-themed song, " Another Auld Lang Zine."

Always one of my favorite artists. Got to see him do a solo acoustic concert one time--until he was joined for a few numbers by Tim Weisberg since they'd just released their first collaborative effort "Twin Sons of Different Mothers." A true loss when he passed too young.

My daddy has been gone for 30 years and the pain is always there; even when we are laughing at stories from my childhood.

Thank you so much for this reaction. You definitely made me and many others smile (cry) today. Sooo much from Fogelberg it's hard to choose. But my personal favorites among his radio hits are "Hard To Say"(1981), "Missing You"(1982) and of course "Heart Hotels"(1979).

There is a concert of his on YT called Greetings from the West. The whole thing is amazing, I know you usually only do movie reacts and song reacts, but that concert would be an awesome reaction!
