Just in case those unfamiliar with Led Zeppelin are unaware, their Drummer sadly passed away some time ago, his son is playing the drums here. His signature hat was a bowler hat, thus the bowler hats in the choir. Very very classy tribute.
Jason Bonham, son of the late John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham, shares a fateful coincidence with another son of another drummer. Ringo Starr's eldest Zak had been recruited by Oasis to be their concert drummer before Liam and Noel had their full-blown split. Zak played with Oasis and was also present with other sons of the Beatles when they eventually did a benefit concert covering their fathers' music. Jason Bonham eventually joined Oasis at some point when Zak had left or I could be confusing my timelines as to who joined Oasis first. Both sons of drummers became truly skilled drummers themselves.
If I remember correctly, Jason later told Howard Stern that his presence was a surprise to the band, hence the shocked and excited reaction when they saw him!!

Ok, I agree with part of your statement. But why did they leave part of the song out? Why did they need a massive choir to fill in? Because they can't pull the weight of what zeppelin could do even on a night they felt "off". And having them there doesn't change the fact that they needed to fit into time restraints and live up to media expectations. That's why bands like led zeppelin didn't get signed to contracts in the beginning. Because they were a round peg trying to fit into a square hole. Their songs were to long to fit onto album ("vinyl") sides. Where is that rebellious side of rock and roll anymore? It's not alive in the older guys anymore. I want that back, where is that now? That was hands down, the best tribute of a song. The third act was tremendous, and the reaction of Jimmy, Robert & John was beautiful to watch. I actually cried. It was like they were experiencing the song for the first time from our perspective - how deeply it moves.
Still, I cried too, I grew up with this song. There were 100 interpreters, otherwise they would never have been able to portray the 4 original ones! The Wilson sisters were legendary before, but through this performance, they entered history, alive!❤❤❤

@@ArchieFatcackie he didn't play the solo from the song, he tried to do his own solo and it was awful. Everyone is expecting to hear one of, if not the most iconic solos ever, and he plays...that mess. That kind of performance you cover the song note for note, and he didn't do that. If you've got the balls to play Jimmy page's solo infront of Jimmy page, and the president of the United States, you had better have the talent to back it up, and this guy didn't. He should be ashamed of that shit solo he played.
@@Dan-su2qt Absolute nonsense. He wasn’t the arranger the whole song was shortened much more than the original including the solo. Also, when did Page ever play as one of his recordings? He treated every live performance as a jamming session.

Lot of tragedy happened to Plant while in the later stages of the band. He's great about his time in the band, but it was over before he was 30, and I'm sure it's not an easy place to revisit, nor living with the legend he created, which was largely out of his control at the time also, as well as into eternity.

This version is better than many I’ve seen, including by Zeppelin themselves. Very powerful, with orchestra and choir. It’s elevated way beyond “rock song” to the land of Musical Masterpiece.
Exactly! If you don't know the history behind the band, even bonzo's son on the drums then you only get this at face value and can't interpret the real meaning and emotion here.
This was my dad's favourite song, he would always listen to it, every morning he played it. Naively I knew this would be his funeral song one day, in a long time I hoped. After a 5 year battle with cancer, last month, as i've always imagined, we played it during his funeral. This tribute song will always hold the biggest place in my heart as I will always feel his presence when listening to it. I love you dad, can't wait to listen to it together one day.
My favorite...your father has amazing and spiritual sense that a lot of people are not capable of having. I'm sure he is listening EVERY SINGLE TIME you play this LOUD and CLEAR!!
So sorry for your loss. This too will be my funeral song in many years to come I hope . But it’s spiritual haunting and almost in my dna. Part of my life.

It gives me goosebumps and lump in my throat every time. I saw Heart about 15 years ago and they played a Led Zeppelin cover. My favorite is their cover of The Battle of Ev’more under the band The Love Mongers.
Yes we can!!! My father is a sound engineer. He and I have permanent hearing loss from our past. Takes one to know one. Still love every minute of it. Wouldn’t change a thing.
This woman has got balls to play such an iconic song in front of one of the most iconic bands in the world and not only that, play it right, and hit a chord deep enough to make these guys emotional. Kick ass woman!
💯! Fantastic tribute to Led Zeppelin and the legendary John Bonham. I grew up thinking the Pledge Of Allegiance was our National Anthem. Little did I know, in my youth how far women would go to achieve the American dream. And myself included. Such a magnificent and inspirational song for us all. Retired Trucker Mary P.S. I apologize to Mr. Plant for my stunned silence, having neglected to return emails from the comments section. God knows how many Robert Plants there are worldwide. I’ve maintained a guarded sense of returning emails in order to maintain my privacy. God bless you all, including former members of Led Zeppelin, and Ann and Nancy Wilson whom I have seen in concert with Heart back in 2007, Milwaukee, WI. Those ladies of Heart still reigns supreme.

I couldn't imagine the impact that having legends like Led Zeppelin give you a standing ovation for performing their song for them. For veterans like Ann and Nancy Wilson it is a tribute to their abilities and dedication to the craft, to Jason Bonham it is a tribute to his father, and to the backup band and singers, it is certainly a highlight, if not the peak of their careers. A fantastic performance by all.
Imagine being young. Full of live. Becoming one of the largest and most influential bands ever, growing old, losing your band mates, then to hear your lifes work being just completely honored by these people. Truly amazing.
Here I am Feb 2023 watching it yet again after all these years! This will always be one of my all time fav live performances whether original or cover, or respectful tribute! 🙌❤️
What i love about this is Zeppelin getting honored, and Heart getting their flowers. An often overlooked band, Ann was a generational vocalist and they put together a couple of the best rock songs of all time. "Crazy On You" rocks so hard.
Young man his dad was playing with him his dad is sitting right there playing with him on the drums just like when he was a baby he's a sit on his Daddy's lap and play when they used to rehearse
The little look and smile between Robert Plant and John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page intently listening to the guitar solo and smiling, the tears of joy and sheer emotion on Robert Plant's face when the choir kicks in, Jason Bonham looking up to the sky in memory of his father as the last line is delivered, everything about this is absolutely perfect and an incredible tribute to the greatest band of all time
There is no greater compliment than to bring the original artist to tears when singing their song to them. This song comes up as the #1 song of all time, on many lists for a very good reason. What a performance! You just feel it through your body.
@@Nylander2004 At their age it could be almost anything. His life was so rich and full of experiences that occurred as a direct result of writing, performing or just listening to his own music. Loss, regret, nostalgia, love, pride ... memories, aging is an amazing emotional process. I'm sometimes overwhelmed ... I cannot even imagine aging after a life as enormous as theirs!
@Nylander2004 I think it's everything (his emotions) just sort of bubbling over like a bottle of champagne. Everything he experienced that got them to this point, the music, the drummer, and the emotion of the moment, to think someone took a song you wrote and with an extreme creative inspiration, created this awesome presentation of it, that moved everyone watching! It was a great performance.
Why does this rendition of the song bring a 63 year old grown man to tears. Perhaps it's the greatest song ever written, and to see it being performed in such a magnificent way and watch the originators enjoy it so.
It's that choir. Phenomenal. And their reactions at the end when the large choir comes out is great, they were like little kids. It was so cool to watch.
@@da324 You are indeed correct! I saw them the same weekend as Woodstock was held. They played the Asbury Park Convention Hall about five miles from my house. It was amazing! This performance looked like a broadway show instead of a concert. It was okay until the background singers ruined it.
This continues to be one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. Just incredible. And the reaction of the original members makes it that much better.
Sorry and what do you do when you listen to the original version, just to do a name, Jimmy's solo (starting at about 6 minutes)? Or the unbelievable symbiosis between the four?
@@someguyinphoenix1876 i don't see the same look as you on Robert's face. As I wrote, it seems to me a convenience expression, not enthusiastic at all. Anyway, I think to be still alive and this performance gives me no emotions at all.
I'm sixty years old now, I've heard "Stairway To Heaven" covered by many, many bands. I thought none could ever capture the essence of the song or the band, but I was wrong. Hearing Heart perform this, watching Jason play, Robert's tears, and watching Jimmy and John react to this? I'm shedding a few tears myself. This is absolute magic.
You took the words right out of my mouth! They all did Led Zeppelin proud. Jason was filled with emotion at the end as well, looking up as if to say, "Dad, this is for you!" Incredible performance and tribute to the best band ever.
I’ve watched this a hundred times and I think what finally got Plant at the end was that a voice worthy of the song finally arrived and delivered the quality of performance only he could surpass back in his prime.
I didn’t think anyone could better Freddie mercurys performance at live aid Wembley Stadium but this comes mighty close. Ann’s vocals combined with the guitars and choir are just amazing, I watch this over and over and I’m so jealous of the lucky people that were present to witness it live.
And the way Plant stood up and pointed at him is respect. Bonham was the only band member who went to the funeral when Plant's young son died. Page and Jones were off on their binges but Bonzo stood by his side. Jason is his mates son and you could tell Plant is proud of him.
THIS is how a tribute to living legends is done. True music by true musicians who have all paid their dues. Kudos to Ann, Nancy, and all those who participated. A HUGE thanks to Led Zeppelin for giving us all this timeless masterpiece to enjoy.
Have not watched this without tears in my eyes, ever. Not a big Led Zeppelin fan, not a big Heart fan but my lord this is epic. Ann killed the vocals. It must have been sensational to hear live it the Kennedy with a full orchestra and choir. Long live Rock and Roll.
she did...holy shit she sounded better then when they were live...she laid everything out...saved nothing back she's bad ass...best female rocker and access lines.
Right!? When that curtain lifts, and the whole choir is belting it out... incredibly moving. One of those "surely it can't get any more awesome... and then it does!" moments.
It was inspired. Just loved every second of it. And the "big choir" at the end just put it over the top. If I don't wind up watching this 100 times I'll be very surprised.
Led Zeppelin are notorious for not exactly loving it when people cover their songs. So the fact that they’re smiling like this, and Robert Plant actually cries, just goes to show you how incredible this arrangement of the song really is.
@@sidewinderenigma That's exactly right...Plant said that on a show he was just telling Page that they should've invited Jason, and then he appeared on stage.
I think this is actually better than theirs. They have a full orchestra behind them. Zep are better with their instruments (Nancy is excellent, but... Jimmy Page? Who is better than him? There are contenders, but the only guy I definitely put ahead is dead 50+ years) but Ann's voice is better than any of the boys.
This is why we should always pay tribute to people when they´re still alive. The joy and the emotion on their faces are priceless.
You’re right. Tell people now you revere them, adore them, love them, and are thankful for them.

I think its the fact the song they wrote is being performed in honor of them so many yrs later. Dude is holding back full on weeping. That clutched hand

They stole this song
That was hands down, the best tribute of a song. The third act was tremendous, and the reaction of Jimmy, Robert & John was beautiful to watch. I actually cried. It was like they were experiencing the song for the first time from our perspective - how deeply it moves.
Still, I cried too, I grew up with this song. There were 100 interpreters, otherwise they would never have been able to portray the 4 original ones!
The Wilson sisters were legendary before, but through this performance, they entered history, alive!❤❤❤
Seeing their faces during the song, I could only imagine the memories that were going through their minds, it brought a tear to my eyes.
I mean it moved Robert Plant to tears so that speaks volumes to me. :)

Jimmy Page had called Nancy a guitar goddess, and all three of them said afterwards that they couldn't imagine anyone else doing it.
While Heart is getting their much deserved recognition for their performance, the musical director who put this masterpiece together should get some too. Every detail was impeccable, every performance was flawless, and this was a result of their work.
Just what performance did you watch cause that guitarist absolutely butchered the solo, it was awful, wtf
@@Dan-su2qt
Eh?
amen...the backup singers, that orchestra and choir are just spectacular.
@@Dan-su2qt
Absolute nonsense.
He wasn’t the arranger the whole song was shortened much more than the original including the solo.
Also, when did Page ever play as one of his recordings? He treated every live performance as a jamming session.
Isn’t it just incredible? No matter how many times you watch this, it never fails to evoke the same tearful, heartwarming emotions as when you first viewed it. Such is the power and brilliance of the Wilson sisters’ (and the entire ensemble) performance! You’d be hard-pressed to find a better tribute to the rock legends than this.
A hundred backup singers, an entire orchestra , and Ann Wilson powers louder and clearer than all of it and sounds flawlessly natural Amazing singer. A true enigma.

The same thought crossed my mind - or at least he didn't fully appreciate it until this performance.
Lot of tragedy happened to Plant while in the later stages of the band. He's great about his time in the band, but it was over before he was 30, and I'm sure it's not an easy place to revisit, nor living with the legend he created, which was largely out of his control at the time also, as well as into eternity.

There are contenders, but the only guy I definitely put ahead is dead 50+ years) but Ann's voice is better than any of the boys.
