How AirTags Work

  • Apple recently introduced AirTags, and if you aren’t familiar with item trackers, you may not understand the point of this $29 white plastic puck. They are similar to a product called Tile, but offer many advantages like Ultra-Wide band technology thanks to Apple's custom U1 chip, and a built-in speaker. So what exactly are AirTags? And more importantly, how do they work if you decide to buy one? Well that's exactly what I'll be explaining in this video about Apple's new AirTags.

    I love the idea of AirTags… but still think this technology should’ve been integrated to other apple products the same way. I can’t find my AirPods when they’re in their charging case and it’s the only way I ever lost (or miss placed) them… having to look for them all around my house. Also I’m not sure about this but if I happen to lose my MacBook and it’s turned off I think find my only shows the last location where it’s been connected. I think apple should integrate the same technology of AirTags to other products, where the find my device is able to take a bit of battery from Mac, iPad, iPhone… so they can be located even if turned off.
    Either way this video was amazing to watch, very informative and the new style looks good!

    I agree that there should be protections against people being tracked maliciously. On the hand, if someone steals my car, they shouldn't be given a heads up that they are being tracked. There ought to be a way to go through a certification process whereby an owner can authenticate themselves, vouch that this tag is going to be protecting this item that they own.

      I think a kyc should be integrated in it. And a sentry mode. For example if some places an AirTag in your car to track you and for an extended period of time I think it should say “joes smith is tracking you”. And I think allowing families /certain contacts can be not notified in a sense like an inner circle so for family trips etc it doesn’t always come up. Furthermore I think future car manufacturers should set up a unique holder for cars and when compromised the car/tracker alerts you

    Thanks. That was a very profound explanation. While I knew how it works, what I learnt from this video is the way the tags identify “malicious activity” by tracking how long it’s been away from the owner. But there’s a flip-side to it, a big one. If someone steals my bag 💼, and is quite far away for me to reach soon, this feature will end up notifying the “thief” that he’s being tracked which defeats the entire purpose of using the air tag. In the choice between saving a stalking victim or tracking a thief, they chose the former. Not sure how informed and thought out the decision was, because The severity of each case is always subjective.

    • @RightOnTarget1
      @RightOnTarget1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As I noted elsewhere, where the AirTag fails is the stolen item scenario. Apple is so worried about stalkers that they made it useless for finding stolen items. It alerts the thief and helps them find it so they can discard it. Tile does it better, especially the flat credit card model that fits in your billfold.

      It will become better if things start having AirTag tech built in (I believe Apple showed off some bikes) or provide convoluted, hidden compartments to place AirTags then people aren't going to mess about.

    • @teeesen
      @teeesen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If a thief with an iPhone steals your tagged ex-possession, Apple will tell you where the thing is long before the thief is told you might be stalking them. Furthermore, if you report your thing as stolen to the police, there is the possibility that Apple would tell them where the thief is -or at least their iphone- even after they’ve deactivated or disposed of the tag. I’m not entirely sure that Apple can or would do that. How well encrypted is your location information on their servers? Any way even if your thief does get a stalker alert and disposes of the tag, you are no worse off (other than being out the cost of one air tag) for having tagged your thing and possibly better off.
      On the other hand, a thief with an Android can use Apple’s anti-stalking app to tell them that there is a hidden airtag in your prize possession without their phone ratting out their location. So this is a selling point for Andoids over iPhones in the criminal phone market.

For example if a partner goes to a women’s (or men’s, but it’s usually women’s) shelter or a friend’s house, 24 period is way too long, especially given that a stalker can renew that grace period even without being able to access the device - as I understand it, just being in Bluetooth range for a few minutes would be good enough to reset the count down.
