My grandfather installed the motors in these at the Pontiac plant in the 60’s and 70’s. Such a sweet truck. My dad remembers sitting in them at the family factory tours.
I grew up working on these old Detroit 2 strokes. The 8v 71 and 92 series. We had an old terex loader with the 12v-92. Always a fun time when they sit for a while and the rack sticks wide open and they run away. Then you go to reach for the latch that drops the air kill flap and it’s frozen. Keeps you on your toes 😂. Also if the governor isn’t working right it will not let the compressor pump. I’ve gotten those bad outta box more times than I can count. They are adjustable as well. And there is a small fuel pump on the back of motor that’s held on by 3 bolts those get weak and won’t keep the fuel rail pressurized enough for injectors and will cause issues.
I totally think this was a win! It went from stuck with no air in the brakes and non-running to driving a bit down the road WITH FUNCTIONING BRAKES! That's a win in my book! Would love to see you go back, finish it and drive it home!!! Good luck next time and great job!!!
I bought my first heavy truck a couple years ago, I'd never worked on them before but had years of experience building cars. Many totally alien systems to me. A lot of things that have potential to be quite dangerous. (The springs in the brake pots will take your head off,) once you get your head around the thing it's not rocket science. Best of luck with it..... cheers from NZ....
The fact that took on this project and got figured out should increase your subs. The way you young guys acted and just wouldn’t quit no matter what! Says a lot!!
I've worked on a lot of Detroit Diesels and big trucks and equipment , y'all are so close to driving the Jimmy home . Lots of lessons learned and don't give up . Damn I just wish it was my truck and I was about ready to drive it home here in Arkansas . I don't have a CDL anymore but I'd take a chance and get " ON THE ROAD AGAIN " . Rock on boy's .
That’s Truck is from the area when a truck Driver was a skilled driver and a mechanic was knowledgeable‼️Cool video keep us informed be safe lots of luck ✝️🇺🇸
The valve on the compressor is the governor that regulates the air pressure . The old 6-71 sounds awesome , it even has Jakes on it . Y'all will have a great time with the Jakes . The Jakes help in braking , it's like the shut off the injectors .
I’ve always liked these cabovers. It’s too bad the style faded out, and is extremely rare seeing these old girls rolling down the interstate. I don’t know if you’ve seen Bruce Wilson’s channel, or not. Anyway he actually came across and picked up a Scania here in the states.
You'll need a lowboy trailer if you can't get throttle . I love the old cabovers and I think ya done good , I look forward to seeing you guys finish this
Did not expect a RIG LIKE THIS ON YOUR CHANNEL, WOW. You guys did very well for not knowing much on this RIG. Now shit is going sideways because it sat so long, not this channels fault, I believe you'll be able too drive it home next trip. GOOD LUCK, GREAT UNEXPECTED VID. FOR SURE.
This channel is so awesome. I want you guys to know, i genuinely get excited when yall post a video. The beauty is, you guys are so relatable. Its inspiring 🤝
It was a Win You now know what you need to hopefully finish. With a Diesel you leave it running, unless you need to turn it off. Also two of those batteries were 8 Volt, lol 6 and 8 Volt Batteries are better then 12 Volt.
Wayne on the ole 2 striker you tube is an expert on old dEEtroits Dane Scott’s truckers lounge has done a lot of interviews with men that have restored Astros. And the selinoid looking things on top of your rocker assembly that’s your Jake Brake what a cool old truck
Outstanding job gentleman. It’s so nice to see young fellas working on these things especially things that are not in your wheelhouse. That was a big win for y’all… That’s gonna be a nice little horse whenever you do finally get it running properly. Again, good job, fellas. A lot of people would’ve given up on it. Y’all should be proud of yourselves
Great video!!! Keep this energy with all your projects and adventures. An as a few commented, give Wayne a holler at Ol 2stroker he's the Detroit master.
Me, I had a Freightliner with a 12.7l Detroit diesel. I had to change the starter in a NAPA parking lot in Farmer's Branch, TX when it was about 104 degrees outside. The starter looked very similar to the one your crew has there. Is not a light piece and is very fun to change on your own 😂😂😂😂
When I was training years ago as an electronics/radio/computer techie, learning the basics, I adopted my own acronyms. CCS=Constant Current Series (Voltage multiplies), and CVP=Constant Voltage Parallel (Amps multipies). Ohm's Law, you BETTER know that. Know this and your math. Doesn't matter if you're playing with circuits with flashlight batteries, cars, or heavy equipment, it all applies. CCS and CVP!
For those who don't know (I'm no expert on these) but when I learned what 6-71, 8-71 etc means I thought it was pretty cool! Each cylinder is 71 cubic inches and there are 6 of them, or 8, or 12 etc. I THINK all of them are supercharger (6-71, 8-71 blower origin) AND turbo charged.
You´re gotta talk to Ol2Stroker, check his shit out, he knows these suckers in and out- get in touch with him, Detroit trucks are his thing. He even has a rig to transport this with, that would be the best advise for Y´all. Greets!
A 12 valve Cummins has a mechanical fuel shut off also, it just has a shut-off solenoid to operate it. You can remove the shut-off solenoid and operate it manually.
I am a truck driver of the past 14 years, and I am also an ASE certified Level III mechanic, but I don't know a damn thing about old school Detroits, or any diesels for that matter. My focus has always been on imports and domestic cars...so I don't know a damn thing about these old Detroits, other than the fact that I LOVE how the old 2 stroke supercharged and turbocharged V8s sound.
I was yelling at the TV a few times, but for knowing nothing you did fairly well. Also, make sure the air flap isn’t stuck before the blower, usually they smoke like a freight train but won’t rev AT ALL.
Sure some others have already stated this or you have figured this out the hard way- the first thing you need to do or know about the Detroit 2 strokes is to free up the injectors before attempting to start one that’s been sitting a long time- as they will stick open and send it into high rpm’s as soon as it starts.
6-71 is a 238 Detroit I think. 238 horsepower, 426 cubic inches. Oh and a 12V Cummins doesn’t require power to turn on fuel. It uses an electro magnet switch to do it, but it's just hooked to a mechanical lever on the pump. Easy to bypass.
A lot of trucks used the parallel switch and they were a pain!anytime we put a new starter on them, we went with the 12volt starter and did away with the parallel switch.
Sometimes on them old deisels when the voltage gets too low the solenoide will run continously until you unhook the battery. Charge the batteries then they're usually ok.
Sounds like the rack and governor needs adjusted it shouldn’t roll the rpm’s like that at idle. I would run it a bit and if it doesn’t come out of it you will need to run the rack and set the governor gap and adjust idle and buffer screw.
I've ran a small gen to a pancake compressor into the air system to limp home one time. DOT would frown on that but figured it was safer than being stuck on the side of the highway
The 671 or 238 detroit ib one of the best diesel engines around I had the same drive train in 72 dodge cl900,I drove that truck for 7 years now it will use oil and leak oil but they will last forever
That's a transfer/parallel switch by the batteries, it should wire 12 volt to that switch/solenoid & it sendsc24v to the starter only tge rest of the truck is 12v. You can update the starter to a 12v & bypass the transfer switch if you don't want the headache of a transfer switch & 24v starter.
My guess is the new starter you got was 12 volt and putting the 24 volts to it fried the solenoid. Most trucks that had the start on 24 run on 12 was bypassed long ago. In the end i think it was just running out of fuel
These people need on of those push button starters that hooks to the starter and bypasses all the key switch stuff on the dash. This engine if started does not need anything electrical running. To drive home though it needs the alternator to be alternating.
The GMC ASTRO AND THE GM TITAN WAS only built for a short time I'm thinking 3 or 4 years, they are great trucks to be an ole school truck, you'll burn up in the summer and freeze in the winter because of the windshield,I drove a titan for a year or so
I can't quite figure out if yall are brave or crazy or a little of both.
I want to see this one drive home. Keep up the good work. Don’t quit! You did good!
Thanks! Will do!

Sweet! Thanks for the info! We will probably order that pump and some lines for sure!

Working on it!

I drive for a living. I call this a major win. Good for you guys, but that short little thing will beat you to death bobtailing 500 miles
I've no answer at this moment, but does the seat in that cab have 'air ride' suspension, anyone, Shawn what say you?
@@claztube More than likely not, at least for 1970...
We might take a couple turns hahaha
great job gentlemen, hope to see a part 2 and watch the ol' girl roll coal down the road
We can’t wait for this part!

Gotta love that wrap around dash
What a cool old rig! Glad you guys are bringing her back around, look forward to seeing you drive it home.
Us too! Hopefully we can here soon
Hope you guys don't give up on us that look forward to these.
I love this episode! Do more old trucks
Keep at it fellas. The drive home will be a whole nother kind of adventure. 👍🏻🤙🏻🖖

Love the cab over look. Save them all!
True that yo
Great video, can’t wait till the next episode thanks.

Amazing episode, love that you're not following the trends with your content. Best wishes, from Northern Europe !

Yall did it. Got itbought got it running got air fixed. All need do is finish all the small stuff. Great job
A semi truck and trailer combined is 26,000 lbs and you need at least 60psi in the air tank for brakes to work or they will lock up automatically
I really thought you were gonna have to abandon that thing! 🤣 Pretty damn excited to see you drive that thing home!
We almost sold it a couple times if we’re being honest
Lol 😂 it was so hard to watch people struggle with simple battery wiring lol grats on getting that big thing started though! Got you a new subscriber

Those solenoids on top of the injectors are for the Jake brake.
Ahhh okay
I’m surprised you got a starter for that for 400$ not a lot of them floating around anymore
Guess we got lucky but now we need another solenoid haha
So as a 2 stroke, are yall adding oil to the tanks as you're fueling? Or is there a separate oil tank?
I have only worked on 2 of them gmc's and they were both 12volt
I'd l9ve to see that restore to new, I'd buy it

Quick n easy way to check if its 22v or 24v .......look at the volt gauge....if it redlines at 20v then clearly its a 12v system ❤️🇺🇲
12v or 24v oops
"This is not a muscle car..." Nope, its a daily driven death trap!!!
