  • I think you have a choice between these semi-open headohones AKG K240 {amzn.to/1lCcTI5} for $72 OR you can go a bit more full bore with the fully open www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQqjs... for $80..
    After that you are looking at closed headphones like the NVX XPT100's [amzn.to/1vvOoEH] which are my everyday headphone.
    Any questions or comments feel free to ask on my audio subreddit [ / zeos ]

    Actually the first review of headphones with a real sound demo. Genius system to record them! Helped me a lot in my decision to buy these akg k240. I hate creepy bassy headphones. That's why I always loved Yamaha stuff, great balance in frequencies. Thanks from France!

    I own a pair of K240's and they sound great in the studio. The sound staging is crazy, the sound clarity is great, but the scooped sub-bass ranges may leave some people feeling they are a little lackluster. I personally have not had any issues driving them (work fine on my Iphone) other than the fact that they are semi-open, which will allow a lot of audio bleeding through either way, in or out. So if you're in an area with a lot of noise do not expect these to handle any kind of noise canceling.

    I am not a specialist or anybody similar. But happened to have a chance to use these headphones for a couple of hours with my Iphone 6s. Plugged them directly in (no amp used). I have nothing to compare such setup with - but ended up listening through so many songs in my playlist cause for me it was an incredible experience. Once again - I have not had a chance to try too many headphones. Would rather say that I am a general consumer using anything small and convenient as long as it works. K240 gave me such a great experience of music! Even without an elaborate hifi setup. I found country music and vocals in general to sound the best. While heavy metal was good but when too many things were playing - it tended to intermix and the difference with my earplugs was mostly the volume and range of sound. But definition of separate sound sources was diminished. Overall - in my opinion these headphone can work with your Iphone with no problem

    Just got my own pair of AKG K240's dropped off by Amazon moments ago. Have them on right now, and have been having a lot of fun listening to Apple Music and TH-cam on them. I've got them connected to a SMSL SP200 THX headphone amp currently, but tried them with my iPad at first, which was JUST able to drive them at a good, loud level, but not ear-bleeding, that's for sure. While zipping through some of my favorite TH-cam music, thought I'd look and see if anyone did a review of these, and low....there was Z-Review. So now I'm listening to Zeos review the K240's while listening to the K240's.
    For the $42.78 I paid to Amazon for these, new-in-the-box, I'm very impressed. And yes, I went right to Michael Jackson as well, though did "Beat It" instead of "Don't Stop Until You Get Enough", and was singing along.
    They are clear as a bell, and do a great job with vocals. The soundstage is big and wide, they are as light as a feather, comfortable enough for long listening sessions, and have no real downsides. With a little EQ, they can really come alive, though even without EQ they sound really good. Surprising amount of detail, and a fairly warm, inviting sound. No, they aren't going to wow you with bass, but there's enough there for a good, balanced sound.
    Even though I have Grado, Koss and HiFiMan cans sitting on the desk right next to me, and just bought these AKG's for shitz and gigglez, I'm quite impressed!
    If you can get these on sale, BUY THEM. But even at full price, they are a very good buy.
    Thanks Z!

    great review. tyvm. I used to have a pair of these years ago and they were stolen. I used them for studio mixing engineering and loved them. Just ordered a new pair and can't wait for them to arrive. The replaceable cord was also a HUGE selling factor for me as I am tired of headphones breaking. My wife just broke my pair of Senheisers :( (cord, one ear no longer works)

    Dear reader, I was in your place, looking at comments. I hesitate but decided to buy these headphones. I can say next: sound is clear, open 'n' wide, bass is not weak and yet detailed. Has feel/hear of soundstage. I would recommend it ONLY if you DON'T listen to new age Hip Hip, R'n'B. If you listen only new age Hip Hip, R'n'B, buy Dr.Dre, Beats whatever (they are hardwired to produce big punch of bass and drums to compensate for bad mixed song (if you are offended, you should be)). I don't understand why people are bashing these headphones on TH-cam only. Same for Fender Mustang GT-100, everyone is bashing, but they didn't test it. I bought that too, best investment for guitar sound so far for best price, yes it can CHUGG. Yes sir itsmistersmoke, me too. Me too.

    I got them today 1-9-16 from Guitar Center , they want $ 99 , I show them the price from Amazon $49 , and they match the price , this phone is AMAZING, I play drums , with Pandora , the volume is controlled, how you explained, from the Ipod , Volume is gain... :), From TH-cam , must of the time is controlled ,but some videos are already Loud . Playing drums with this AKG k240 become weird at the beginning , because I was used to the RZA Premium Headphones and its Bass is it Extreme, plus they are Closed back or Insolation ones, No way I can listen well my drumming.....!! :( , so that is the main reason I got this AKG semi open back... Now I am readjusting my ears to them , after 30 minutes on the drum set , I got a kind of pleasure to performance, i hope this help , thanks Z-reviews.

    I enjoyed using (daily) my k240s for a few years until the right ear channel gave out. I'll probably buy another pair sometime. Also, I didn't even use an amp for them most of the time and they sounded good and plenty loud for me.

    I have never heard of that 3 knuckle measurement for if your ear will fit in the ear cup before lol. but it works! haha. I have learned for the day. Also my dad has a really old pair of these, like probably a good 20 years old by now, maybe a bit less, but its up there. and they look cheaper, the ear pads are the same material but flatter and stiffer, your ear basically rests on the hard plastic (or whatever material) inside the ear cups, making a terrible seal. they require a decent amount of power to drive, and sound so flat (in a bad way) and sharp and empty, that cheap ear buds are more pleasant to listen to lol. But they do have a pretty good amount of detail and neutrality in there, when you get a good section of sound out of them. I'm sure this is attributed to their age and lack of proper care or even use in recent time. and I haven't yet used a straight up amp yet (just an old cd player my dad uses for his living room speaker set up), but yea these were the first headphone I ever tried that are technically audiophile level, before I actually started getting new modern headphones that made these sound like shit lol. I guess they dont age well

    Amazon has these for less than $55 USD.
    I like mine quite a lot. The bass (minus the non-existent sub bass) distorts in fascinating and fun ways with amping. Not a very high-resolving headphone but very lush-sounding. Probably the cheapest mid-centric headphone you can find.

    Run these straight off my 1985 TEAC CD player and they make 95% of albums immaculate experiences. The only issues I had were with albums that were mixed without taking advantage of the soundstage, or heavy on wall of sound and bass.

    I understand theyre not ideal to listen to bass heavy music, for a casual music lover. But what does that mean for an audio engineer producing and mastering (not live recording) bass heavy music? Does that mean, that if you make your project sound really bassy, that on a consumer set of regular civilian headphones (ie Beats headphones) that the bass would just sound horrendous, even thoough it sounded perfect on the AKG K240?

    How are the AKG k240 headphones in terms of sound bleeding out and noise cancellation? I use headphones a lot taking the bus, walking around, studying at the library etc. so I like keeping music in and other sounds out. (I know some headphones like Beats Solo kind of suction cup your ear to passively cancel some noise)

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greenery They are way too open for oustside use. They are also very hard to drive. If you have the budget you want to look at the SoundMagic HP150's I just reviewed. If you need to go cheaper the BrainWavz HM5's or the NVX XPT100's are closed cans and easy to drive.

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These headphones need more power than most portable players or phones have. So you would either have to live with it playing too quiet or add a portable amp to drive them.
      Take a look at the TakStar 2050's They are easy to drive and in my opinion sound better than the AKG's.

      First off, I do like the headphones and I'm glad I got them. I can't really speak for any of the others on that list except the Samson SR850s which my brother bought. (Hopefully gonna upload a review video on them both this weekend!) They are practically the same design but they do have their distinct differences. The AKGs are looser fitting with the removable mini xlr and Faux Leather ear pads, whereas the 850s have a tighter grip and a more "on-ear" feel with their velour ear pads. AKGs seem to be made of higher quality materials. The sound is definitely different from the Sennheisers and it took a few days to get used to. I'm liking them very much and they have become my main headphones in place of the Sennheisers.

    • @alexanderjarvis9827
      @alexanderjarvis9827 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for replying so quickly! Are the HD518 the successor to the HD515? And so they should probably share the same slight v-shape sound right? I would assume that the more mid-focused sound of the AKGs would compliment the v-shaped sound of the Senns. In your opinion, what are the K240s good for? I tend to use headphones for casual and critical listening as well as for gaming, so knowing what these headphones are better suited for would give me a better idea of whether I think they would be a good purchase for me.

    • @Terrifictony
      @Terrifictony 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the HD518 are the successor though I've never tried them. The Sennheisers do sound like they lean more toward treble and are definitely more open. The SR850s I would say have a V-Shape. The AKGs are the most flat and sound good plugged into the motherboard of my pc, but even better when using an external soundcard/amp. I am using an old USB sound card at the moment that really makes everything pop. I normally use them for gaming, watching youtube, and occasionally just jammin out. No problems with them so far. If you are on a budget, I'd say to get the SR850s over the AKGs. They are just not built as well as the AKGs and are too tight in my opinion.

      semi open means the headphone let the air get inside/outside the headphone through vents.
      you play music, and if you take off your headphone and listen through the vent, you still could hear music.
      general advantage of semi open headphone (based on my listening experience on akg k240) is:
      1. the music gets less cramped.
      2. the vents also helps ease pressure.
      other than that, I don't feel much difference than closed back headphone.

    Hi Sir,
    I really like the way you review... It would be of great help for me to decide... between Headphones...
    I am not professional like you all.. I am casual listener ... who appreciate good sound... and love to have great immersive music experience...
    I like punchy deep bass( not bass head ), good vocals.. and clear and crisp high....
    I don't want flat recording headphones.. which might be most time boring to listen... which won't give concert hall feel...
    What headphone you would recommend me.. which are easy to carry ... travel friendly... do not look weird on road and office..
    I have an eye .. on Beyer T51i... vmoda xs... or ATH-M50x...
    I would be happy if you suggest me something which is even better than these,,,,.. that would be a bonus for me.
    Thanks..

    I used them for almost 2 years. Sound is good, neutral enough for most people. Headband does not breathe, makes my head hot and sweaty, and flattens my very thin hair. Pads are cheap and do not breath either.

    Many over at head fi simply state they're identical to the Studio variant, but after listening to both (and owning the MK iis [with better pads]) I can firmly say the MK iis just sound plain better.

    • @Monomonmamon
      @Monomonmamon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      can't compare the two since
      k240
      - semi-open back
      - mostly in studio use
      - isolation probably isn't present that much
      M40x
      - Portable use
      - isolation is mostly solid
      - closed back
      I'd prefer K240 if you want to feel how the song was recorded or how big a soundstage on a song really is, also that clarity (haven't owned the m40x but I trust AKGs)

    • @Hour_of_Mercy
      @Hour_of_Mercy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I own both pairs (k240S and M40X). Both are brilliant headphones, IMO. The M40s have a bit of a V shape to their sound, but great bass energy. Their mids are relatively clear, and the high end extension is a bit piercing, becoming fatiguing pretty quickly. They are relatively efficient, and are fine without an amp. The soundstage is minimal, and the 3D image of the sound isn't really very accurate. Still, they are very fun headphones that have a wonderful, no nonsense, super clear sound. The k240 headphones are also very clear, but have a much different sound. They lack super low end bass energy, but have a slightly boosted midbass. They also have a subtle spike somewhere near the mid treble. The midrange is incredible, I mean... Once they're burnt in for at least 100 hours.... Absolutely incredible. Very refined, music sound that makes you hear and feel the timbre of all sorts of acoustic instruments, as well as vocals... In a way that is astonishing. The highs manage to be laid back, but refined and detailed without cause me any fatigue even at quite high volumes. I don't feel ice picks in my ears as with the m40x. The soundstage is better, as these are Semi open. Their fit is a bit strange win the self adjusting headband. They are not as efficient as the m40x headphones, and don't go as loud... However, it doesn't necessarily feel weak either. At first, bass seemed a bit lacking, but in time the midbass seemed to come to life and give me a good idea of the bass lines in most songs. The sound of the k240s is very unmuddy, and relatively hard... You get the sense that although the bass is a little lacking in the very low end, anymore would mess up the balance of the sound and make something muddy, and make it lose that special hard quality, and sense of instrumental timbre. It's hard to say which pair of headphones is better... Although I find the m40s very fatiguing and turn to the lively musicality and midrange brilliance of he k240s more and more often. The m40x headphones are closed, and the treble just feels too close to my ears with a lack of soundstage, that's been my experience overall.
