  • A rare gem, but not without flaws.
    Someone asked me to measure the ear cups. The inner opening is 2 1/4" in diameter, and the full diameter of the pads is 4 1/4".

    It's a superb work of art, priceless what you hear is what you get no punches pulled, it's in a league of it's own.
    I am proud to say that I have one.

    I have the Monitor, Sextette and DF versions and the DF is definitely the better sounding. So fast, musical and the sound stage is to die for. I also have the more recent Studio version, not made in Austria, and it is nowhere near the older Austrian versions. I own about 25 headphones and iems and this DF is the most musically satisfying of all of them. Great review by the way...

    Had them in a store box for 25 years. Just because they were too hard to drive. I recently bought a RME Adi 2 Dac and it's a piece of cake for the RME Adi. I boosted the low frequency below 110 hz with the marvelous equalizer of the RME and the 240 DF sounds fantastic with a punchy bass.

    Nice build quality...one of the best Headphones for MIXING.
    Its beeing used actually for Sound Egineers on the go. The demand has greatly increased in recent months ... and the price went up a lot ... after all, very hard to find .... new or used

    Great review! About 10 years ago when I received my K240DF and did not know what to expect from them yet, I made the mistake of working on an entire mix while wearing them.
    When I later listened to the result using speakers, it turned out that I made the basses extremely high everywhere and it sounded horrible.
    Since then I don't use these for full studio mixing anymore. Because they are very comfortable and have a very clear sound, I like to use them for online lessons, watching video reviews and only as the last step after mixing/mastering in order to hear the small details of the treble/mids and getting an extra "point of view" on the sound.

      They have to be driven with an extremely powerful amplifier as they are 2x600ohms … if you drive them properly they definitely DO have bass response but 600. Ohms is a HELL of a lot of resistance, so without proper power the bass is pulled off along with most of the volume lol

      No. I had Tyll measure my pair on his reference amplifier for taking measurements and there is just no bass, just the way they are

    I hunted these down because of you, these are seriously great! Yes, the bass is really flat, but still sounds bassy or thumpy when it needs to be.

    Thanks for this, much appreciated.
    The spatiality & mids are fantastic.
    It has good upper & mid bass quantity once it’s powered properly, pad rolling also helps.
    It does have minor sub bass roll off & it isn’t the most slammy.
    It’s a special headphone, no doubt about that.

    I am loving the AKG 240DF very much. I am using it every day during my development work. My sound chain is a bit muffled with a tendency to amplify the depths. That works perfectly in combination with the quite light sound of the K240 DF. I like its analytic, dynamic but unobtrusive sounds. The bass is always clean and goes quite deep. You need to get used to it but for longer listening sessions the sound pattern of the K240 DF is perfect. The fantastic mids prevent that my ears get tired even after 10 hours of listening. I did not notice a treble peak on my phones.
    People who never heard a high impedance phone don't know what they are missing :-) In the world of mobile devices everything goes low impedance - on the cost of dynamic and precision.

    I bought these back in the late nineties at Mars Music. They’ve always been difficult to drive. I also purchased a Benchmark DAC1 to power them. I used them for critical listening and mixing. I especially used them for referencing mastering projects I would do. Their bass response wasn’t ever good enough to get accurate mixes and masters and be sure you did a good job. They are so light and easy to wear. I tried buying another pair on eBay years later for parts but those turned out to be fake. They had the wrong drivers in them and they sounded awful.

      I was definitely lucky to get my hands on a real used pair here, but eventually sold it. I do still have 3 K240s though: an Austrian MK II, a Monitor, and a Sextett LP

    So, this guy (a so-called expert) dares to mention a vintage pair of AKG's in the same sentence as the "holy grail" HD800's (or similar)? No designer box, no exotic materials? No Gold plating? A pair of old cans that can be found on eBay for a couple hundred bucks (or less)?...What kind of sorcery is this? Well, as a proud owner of a pair of DF's powered by a Woo WA6 c̅ 6DR7 tubes.. I can tell you, he's absolutely correct. The AKG K240 DF's (when properly driven) are simply amazing. And, for the price of the HD800's alone, one could buy 3 pairs of DF's and a Bellari HA540 amp with money to spare.

    • @orbea1951
      @orbea1951 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I let them rot for 25 yers -I just was not into headphones now I am - and yes.. you heard details to the level almost, almost HD800. Have you ever changed the pads? Even without use the pads are not in good shape on my pair.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I still find that these have serious problems with the bass region missing enormously but the mids and highs bear a surprising resemblance to the 800

      I had the Brainwaivz lambskin pads I used on my T5p but they were messing up the bass control so.. I put them on K 240 DF just for fun.. It was like completely different headphone. Lots of bass, a bit bloated or at least it was until I removed the foam protection for the drivers. Now it's under control, plenty of it and it's lovely. It does not look like they lost anything in the mids and treble but I am too old to hear properly the high end of the spectrum.

    This headphone have bass..but for shaking it you need a realy high power..
    I run my recently acquired one with a soloist (4watts per channel at 16 ohms),and i need the full gain with half volume
    for realy moving the membrane at low frequency.
    For the reste,it have the clearest,natural and textured medium i ever heard.. (HD800 included)i love it.

      Haha for me I just see them as a cool rarity and keep this pair around for historical and collector reasons rather than actually using it often. I also have a Sextett too. Pretty cool vintage 70s headphone.

  • @ebookpioneers
    @ebookpioneers 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are exactly correct. I have an old pair of DF's and also an older pair of the K240 Studio's, and the bass is nearly nonexistent on the DF's. Mine have been sitting in a drawer for nearly 10 or 15 years since I bought them. Having said that, perhaps there's more to German / Austrian audio standards than just a different impedance compared to American studio gear. I don't really know. It could be that the DF's would sound great to someone using Austrian gear.

    Hey man love these reviews! I don't know if you're interested in closed backs but the new MSR7 by Audio-technica is supposed to be EXTREMELY good. According to Tyll from innerfidelity they're pretty much reference quality. Just thought i'd let you know.

    • @metal571

      Yeah I read his review. Not a big fan of closed backs or that brand in general except for a select few models.

  • @chucklemberg4968

    I bought a pair of these when they first came out. Originally, was driving them from the headphone jack of a Hafler DH-110 pre-amp. Worked well - plenty of power, and the ability to adjust the bass up slightly (I'm less concerned about the bass being light, however, as every other set of headphones/ear buds I've ever listened to seemed to have an unnaturally heavy bass which colored the rest of the music).
    Since then, I have given all of my stereo gear to my sons. I am now listening to FLAC's through the headphone jack on my PC's powered speakers, and they sound a little thin. Looking for a way to bypass the DAC on the PC and also drive them with a little more power (and have tone controls as well).

    Have you heard other AKG K240 models ? Studio, Monitor, Sextet LP, Sextete MP ? What you think about those models ? I ordered two diffrerent Sextet's , 2 pair of Monitors and 2 pair of DF's. I allready have new K240 studio's.

  • @EMK19
    @EMK19 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this review, I've actually been very interested in this headphone lately as I've realized that I'm a fan of Diffuse Field signature since I've been liking the Etymotic ER4S in-ears quite a bit (which is supposed to have one of the most accurate match to the DF target out of any headphone/IEM IIRC). These seems to achieve that in the mids and highs from your description (I really wish there was a graph of these somewhere, but I haven't found one), but maybe not as much in the bass. By any chance have you heard the 240M (the Monitors) or know about how they differ from the DF model? Thanks in advance.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I say DF I mean more of the sound of a DT880, HD 800, or the 240DF. It implies a sibilant low treble spike, which the er4 doesn't have. The 240 monitor is something I still haven't heard but supposedly sounds similar to the new studio, but with a little less bass and probably a faster signature.

    To me, the K240DF is flatter than HD800. I have both and of couse I like the HD800 a whole lot more but for playing instruments for example, the K240DF is simply as real as reality gets. But people have told me they sound lifeless. For music production, they have no equal.

    Thx for the measurements. :)

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did. It's in the description. Forgot to mention that in the video to look in the description for those measurements

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      D Patel Oh yeah and to answer the other question, no they don't dethrone them due to the bass being just as light as it is. They're great for analyzing midrange and treble and what is actually present in a song more than the K701 even, but beyond that the K701 are more fun for me to listen to.

    • @dpatel6447

      metal571 They sound like they're a great solution when you can't use monitors. They are harder to find than a unicorn though if you live in north america. AKG has an obscene amount of spinoffs within model lines. Didn't even hear about DF until your latest review.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      D Patel Yeah they really are as rare as I mentioned. They pop up on US eBay from time to time, and usually I only see one for sale at a time when they are for sale. Mine was in mint condition, so I happily made a $150 offer to nab a pair, and it's been worth it, even as a collector's item alone for an AKG fan like myself.

    I own the Akg K240 Df Headphones. I have the M Audio Pro Fire 610 Dac. The Dac itself can't drive the headphones, it is very low on maximum volume. By adding the Headphone amp you mentioned, the Magni 2 Uber, will i be able to get the needed power to drive the K 240 Df's?

    • @metal571

      Drive this with beefy amplifier or you will end up having bright sounding headphone with no bass. The absence of the bass is due to the amplification.

    I had this headphone running on a NAD amp way back in the "70"s
    maybe good for mixing (i wonder) but for music one of the WORST sounding cans that i ever heard, sold it for 25 Dutch Guldens to a deaf smuck who been using them for years ....
    I was MUCH happier with my Beyer Dynamic DT 880 Studio"s and of course the normal K240 version, liked your review nonetheless.

      Hey there, I finally got hand on a senny hd580 (normally people try the hd6xx series first and then try other phones) and I must say now you're right with the sennys superior treble timbre (silvercable is a beast combo with them!)
      The diffusefield AKGs are more reference in detail retrieval/soundstage/imaging, but the k240df/k260 definitely have some grain in the treble region + they are on the brighter side.
      The K260 is a bit better damped has normal base response, almost like a hd580. You would like it.
      If your'e interested look on ebay, I sell an AKG K260 with international shipping (its treated like garbage here in germany/austria)
      I suggest you getting an original pioneer monitor 10, too. With a bit FR correction absolute killer headphone in timbre, bass, soubdstage even. Get one!
