    I've used thees cans pretty heavily for the past 7 years with no complaints. Reliable, accurate, rugged enough to hold up under reasonable handling. Not the most comfortable I've ever used, but wouldn't trade them for anything else - -especially at their price point.

    I have a pair of these and the accuracy of the sound is unbelievable. many times I hear noises, like a bang or whatnot, and I think it's outside but it's coming from the cans, from whatever feed I'm listening to. It's great they're not bassy because "bassy" just means the sound is distorted and not real. As far as the comfort goes, I go 8 hours with them in absolute comfort. As long as the room temperature is equal to, or below 27 º C, I get no sweating issues.

    I still use my dad's pair of k240 monitor from 1987 which have been used consistently throughout all of that time by me and him and they still work perfectly. It's amazing that something 34 years old still works and sounds as good as it does. They need new pads but other than that they are perfect!
    Now I have a pair of K812's and K872's but I sometimes still use the 240's for nostalgia and some fun.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Monitor now as well as a Sextett LP from the 70s and a made in Austria K240 MK II which is basically identical to the Studio.
      Never liked the K812 one bit, but haven't heard the K872. In fact I was able to confirm with Dr. Olive of Harman that it was released prematurely before the engineers had finished the product. Very unfortunate and this explains Tyll's negative reaction as well back in the day.
      I am looking forward to what the new Harman engineering team can do with a successor to the K701. That series I did like although it leans too bright for my taste nowadays

    I've had the first Austria edition. They only came in silver. Now I have the Austria gold version. I've used them for mixing over 40 years now without changing the leather pads. They have been soldered a couple of times over the years as my small children also used them to listen to music with and play with. I still use them today. The leather pads are a little worn and the adjustable plastic you put over your head has no AKG on it anymore. The gold wore off. The also lost the AKG gold caps that sits where you loosen the screws to get inside the headphones. But they still work and sound exellent. I maybe retiring them to try the 701's and the DT 990. I need some close backs too to use when singing into a microphone. But I'll keep them forever. At the time I bought them they were no budget headphones. And they were used in all studios around the world.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The original is called the Sextett. I have one now, a late production example or LP. The gold is called a Monitor which I also have, and now I have an Austrian MK II which is the 55 ohm dark blue one. They're all uniquely voiced and very interesting to listen to

I won a voucher to purchase something from a specific audio tech store, and the only products that seem useful for me are headphones they sell, one of which are the K240s. Also I don't have an amp, so would it be necessary to get one for it?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      They're good, but just be aware that they are harder to drive than their 55 ohm impedance might suggest. I would recommend an amp and be prepared to have very little of the sub bass region represented in your music.

    I've had a pair of K240's since 1986 and they have lasted up until just a week ago when the left channel went dead. I can't find any broken soldering points so, RIP to my K240's. They were a great rugged pair of headphones despite a lot of abuse thrown at them, and they have lasted just short of 30 years--amazing really. Got these for Christmas 1975. Never had any other headphones before or since. I broke the plastic 1/4 inch jack 2 years ago and I missed listening so much that I have just bought a soldering iron and insulating tape and I've now repaired the jack. There's just something about them, not sure what it is, maybe the iconic design

    I loved these cans as well. The mids sometimes startles me on them. Their biggest flaw I think is their tendency to distort at higher levels. Highs are great as well and I don't really mind the bass roll off since overall its such a great listen.

    • @billmorrigan386
      @billmorrigan386 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@giorgiomontanaro The problem with this model is that there are too many knock-offs or fakes on this model. They sound okay but nowhere near the real deal. The real, non-fake model is very good whether it is made in China or Austria. As to fake ones, you are much better off with cheaper but authentic headphones, not fakes. I also saw "Austrian made" Chinese fakes. It's very deplorable. It's so bad that I cannot buy headphones anymore without listening to them first. There's so many fakes nowadays: fake sneakers, fake headphones, fake watches and I even saw a fake Casio watch on TH-cam. That's just crazy when they make even knock-offs of relatively cheap stuff like sneakers or some Casio watch (It's not even Omega or Longines for crying out loud). Very neat & detailed review. Thank you for your personal opinions here! Im buying these, as i was overwhelmed by the overly bassey Beyerdynamic DT 770 (for my needs anyways). So a happy friend got a good price on them practically unused from me ;) Personally im producing Trance Music (EDM) so the Mids & Highs are Extremly important (& how they blend into one another). Also important the bass dont eats up the rest of mix. I like the fact that their semi-open, coz it makes me think maby it will save the ears better, if were lucky? ;) Also like the fact that they are said to be easy to power/drive, correct me if im wrong? Planning to run them with my small Bose Companion 2 Series 2 real neat little speaker system with 3.5 jack. For more power i have the Pioneer VSX 1130, but i doubt its good to run stereo headphones on a 7.2 Amp home Cinema system, as for Mixing Critical Purposes... What do you say guys...? hehe :)

      @metal571  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +tredfxman depends. These don't get super loud from traditional sources like a phone or a PC but will get loud from a receiver. However receivers can bloat the bass if their output impedance is too high and there's no way to know if that's the case or not

    I've bought one of these but it had a cracked housing, I was planning to use its driver in a Sextett housing. The only other 240s I have is a Sextett, and mids and treble feel nearly identical across the two in terms of tuning, but I feel the studios sound a bit dullish and low resolution in comparison. Though for a headphone under $100, I'd say it's definitely one of the best I've heard and makes a delightful starter headphone for anyone going down this rabbit hole

I still really like the sound of these M220s. They sound right in tonality and timbre, and although the low bass is lacking, the rest sounds pretty damn faithful... And for the 60 CAD I got them, I think they are a steal. I do think the golden K240s look quite a bit nicer than the all black M220 though, just IMO, so now I am thinking of picking up the K240 instead. lol

      @@metal571 BTW, I am pretty sure I would take these over the Q701 as well as the Massdrop K7XX. I was pretty disappointed by those two. Q701 sounded too thin, plasticy and empty to me, while the 7XX was dull and bland to my ears with recessed lower treble, sloppy, overblown upper bass and even stranger, less natural timbre than on the Q701. The M220 is sounding very natural so far and tonally well balanced, which is a stark contrast to my experience with the 7xx line. Also, while I love the bass and lower mids on my K553, the M220 has better highs and better timbre I think. So yeah - great value for the $$, no doubt and one of the better AKGs IMO.

I'm trying to get away from my closed headphones right now for gaming because I heard the open backed headphones are just superior when it comes to gaming. Do you have any recommendations on what I should get? I really just want good, directional (surround) sound with a light build because the ones I have now are incredibly heavy and pretty uncomfortable after a while. Dear reader, I was in your place, looking at comments. I hesitate but decided to buy these headphones. I can say next: sound is clear, open 'n' wide, bass is not weak and yet detailed. Has feel/hear of soundstage. I would recommend it ONLY if you DON'T listen to new age Hip Hip, R'n'B. If you listen only new age Hip Hip, R'n'B, buy Dr.Dre, Beats whatever (they are hardwired to produce big punch of bass and drums to compensate for bad mixed song (if you are offended, you should be)). I don't understand why people are bashing these headphones on TH-cam only. Same for Fender Mustang GT-100, everyone is bashing, but they didn't test it. I bought that too, best investment for guitar sound so far for best price, yes it can CHUGG.

    Another great review! I bought a DT 770 PRO long time ago, after seeing one of your reviews I made the final decision, I'm still happy to this day : )
    But currently I'm in a hunt for better soundstage and imaging, since I never owned any open backs. And it needs to be in the K240s price range. Would you recommend these for someone that is looking for better soundstage and imaging for the first time? Is the difference from a DT 770 Pro significant enough in those aspects to justify the purchase? Or should i just save and get something else in another price range? In that case what would you recommend?

The V6 is a much harsher sounding headphone and is closed back, so it's a different headphone.
