    (The Sennheiser website says 97db/v, but this is thought to be an error where someone may have updated the unit but not the number. Third-party measurments also come to around 103dB/v)

BTW im using a little dot MK3 with Yugo front tubes in the living room and a old Yamaha A32 in my backroom(mainly cuz its where my big speakers are at) and that Yamaha has surprised me for the power hungry cans. Its true they really need power from a speaker amp or a high end headphone amp.

    • @LordofDiamondsMetal
      @LordofDiamondsMetal ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, despite solid state amplification being technically superior in many ways, some people still cling to tube amplification, especially guitarists. it's supposedly because tubes clip the signal in a fundamentally different way from transistors, producing more even harmonics that sound "sweeter". but you only hear that effect if the signal is pushed so hard that it clips and distorts, and for a listening situation that's not what you're looking for

    I think it's interesting how TH-cam compression really ruins the high end on the headphone recording. I've listened to some K240 Sextetts before and the highs are super crisp, not fuzzy or tinny like they record as. (Also good to see the absurd power requirements finally validated, I don't listen to them very loud so I've always wondered if they take as much juice as people say.)

    If you want to compare stink mathematically, use this equation:
    *_Volume = 10⁽ˢᵉⁿˢᶦᵗᶦᵛᶦᵗʸ/²⁰⁾ / ohms_*
    Using the properties of BODE diagrams (mathematics term for frequency response graps)

    Actually watched this video using the SONY PHA-1 ($300~) and a pair of XCD BTOE1 headphones from JB Hifi that cost $30.

    The HD600 is surprisingly easy to drive btw. Even a phone can do it with a dongle. Of course it won’t get loud, but it will still be an enjoyable listening experience. Would you want to do it? You can, but please don’t carry them with the 3 metres long stock cable. Also don’t expect to have a lot of headroom if you need that for production, but any interface will give you enough power to do that. Finally we have a video that doesn’t just tell you high impedance means you need more power. No it does not lmao, low sensitivity and high impedance means you need loads more power and that’s pretty rare nowadays.

    So you say Ohms are not a good refrence for how "stinky" your headphones are however, when sticking exclusively to standard dynamic driver headphones it's pretty much directly related to the volume, with outliers depending upon oversized drivers bringing down the frequency response but not by any large margin.

    It's always interesting to me to sort through which of each headphone I like better when you do these comparisons, cause I learn more and more about what I want when I finally get some more overears. So far I'm down to "balanced mids, slightly boosted bass, and for God's sake no super bright and tinny uppers!" Probably comes from having played drums in band and knowing what the cymbals are supposed to sound like. They're suprisingly low in tone, at least the ones my school had, the high pitched tss was more of a highlight than the main sound. And that's all I get from the HurrDurr600s.

    Impedance is a useful metric because it's really easy to measure scientifically. But it's only tangentially related to volume, it's a measure of electrical resistance after all. Whereas sensitivity is literally a measure of volume, but it's a much less scientific number. You'll see different numbers for a headphone's sensitivity depending on who measures them, and this is because it depends on measuring equipment, seal, acoustics and pink noise control etc. If you're really unsure whether you'll be able to drive a headphone, I recommend finding someone who has given a sensitivity score to the headphone you're after and a headphone you own. That way you can usually assume they'll have measured both with the same equipment and the relative difference will be trustworthy.

    HD600s are a lot easier to drive than I thought, because of the sensitivity. My Focusrite Scarlett Solo that plugs into a USB port, works just fine for them. Good thing too, my $100 amp becomes unbalanced and scratchy when you turn the knob, it's frustrating

    This brings up my preferences...I absolutely adore Audio Technica's ATH-M50X over-ear headphones...they can be driven by a phone or portable CD player fairly easily...but I own a Schiit Audio Asgard 2 headphone amp...class A power up to 1 watt!! The way the amp lights up the audio from the ATH-M50X's is INSANE! Quality power with headroom makes an incredibly nice change to the music. Sure I could drive damn near any pair of headphones with the Asgard 2...it really does have a noticable and healthy impact.

    I'll be honest, I'm confused on the scoring scale. Is the score the top volume before distortion happens or the lowest volume which is clearly audible on the ears? Was it the volume which matched the volume on the HurrDurrs or...
    I mean, it was a good video I just really had no idea if anything was good or bad or... what. I mean, I guess none of them were bad but I really have no idea what I even just watched.
