  • There are various ways of head movement in boxing/fighting, slipping and rolling being the most common. It’s rarely understood when and why one should roll. In this video, I will make it very clear when to roll and when to slip.

    Coach thanks for the different angles. I realize I been rolling randomly instead of in btw combos--I'm always learning in all of your vids! Thank you

    Great stuff! Thanks. Rolling is a bigger movement that loads up counters, but could put you in bad positions if the timing is wrong. More dangers for rolling/ducking in mma than boxing too.

    Another great video, coach, quick question... For rolls, do I start the movement by slipping my head in the direction of the incoming punch first and then drop or do I drop immediately and turn my upper body on the way up to load up for my counter? Which one's the correct way? I'm getting conflicting information and I feel like slipping first is too slow. I'm getting caught!

    • @coachpillowfists
      @coachpillowfists  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That is a great question, Victor! There's no right or wrong answer as it depends on the situation. If your intention is to roll right after the slip then yes, start descending your head during your slip to get a head start on your roll. Sometimes we slip without intending to roll after, but then we make the split second decision to roll after the slip (just out of rhythm, impulse, or maybe a reaction to something you see last second). This is why I say it just depends on the situation. I'll start writing up a video on how to react better to oncoming punches using head movement and hope it'll answer a lot of questions.

      I lost a lot of my old footage from back in my fighter days, but there's some old fight footage on my old TH-cam channel www.youtube.com/@TKB907 if you wanted to see. Or there's some brief sparring footage at the end of this video I made last year th-cam.com/video/hi6CGG_fluo/w-d-xo.html. I don't do any active sparring anymore though.

    What are the best shoes for shadowboxing and running any suggestions?

    • @coachpillowfists
      @coachpillowfists  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Any wrestling shoes or boxing shoes will be good for boxing/shadowboxing. But stick with the running shoes for running. I wouldn't suggest running with boxing/wrestling shoes because (1) it'll wear them down quickly, (2) you want to keep the soles clean for the most part, and (3) I feel like my feet would start to hurt running long distances in them.

    As a tall guy(6'6) should I ever roll under a hook and roll in general?Becouse Ive got a high center of gravity and my chances to dodge a spontaneous hook are slim to none

    • @coachpillowfists
      @coachpillowfists  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, you should consider that they're targeting all the way up to your head regardless of how tall you are, so you can still roll under their hook as long as their aiming up to your head level. But unfortunately, it does take up more time and energy out of you than a shorter fighter to do that so do I would say to resort to it sparingly. Don't take it out of your defenses, but you would want to focus more on the pull backs, step backs, framing.
