Great reaction! This is the performance that the TH-cam algorithm magically served up to me 4+ years ago. I haven't had a day without listening to The Warning's music or watching a video of theirs since. And I've had the pleasure of seeing them live now twice. Aside from their obvious talent and passion, what blew me away is the sheer infectious energy they bring and the expressiveness they convey. It helps that the music is top notch too!

Survive is such an incredible jam. The way they trade vocals, and the instrumental part to end the song, I can never get enough of it. This band, more than any other band I've ever listened to and been a fan of, I can just listen to over and over on repeat and not get bored of it.
And you're totally right about this mini-concert being a great introduction to the band. Great music, great human beings, and a great message. What more can you ask for?

This is the video that hooked me on The Warning and I was just as impressed with their spoken words as I am with their massive musical talent. Even more exciting is that they are young and the best is yet to come from these amazing young ladies.
There is a lot of behind the scenes, meet and greet, acoustic and interview videos out there that are really worth a view. All three of them are so polite and they really go out of their way to interact with their fan base. These ladies will be entertaining us with their incredible talent for years to come. A couple notes on the second song, When I'm Alone. Due to the topic of the song, I believe this is their only song totally without backing vocals. To spanish speakers from their home the title sounds like Huele a Melon (translation... Smells like a melon) so that's how a lot of people refer to this song. It was written by Dany as a assignment when they were at the Berklee School of Music and she was feeling particularly homesick.

Pau has become less 'violent' at hitting the drums, using less of her whole arm and more with the wrists, which has given her more control. She breaks fewer sticks now. But she still does from time to time. However, it's hard to notice when it happens because she never meets a beat when she replaces the stick. At one show during their recent tour she lost a stick (as in dropped it) while playing the last couple of bars of Evolve at the end of the show. She was recording it on her phone from behind her at the time, her Pau Cam broadcast. You can see that she completed the song with one stick and a bare hand. At another concert she broke the head on her kick drum, which has to be temporarily repaired for her to complete the concert. At yet another show she broke a stick, flipped it back behind her and picked up a replacement all on beat. She's amazing and fun to watch. It is a meme that she is the destroyer of drum kits. Drum manufacturers should let her test the durability of their kits so that they can apply a 'Pau Tested" label. LOL

Their early influences in rock were Queen, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Elton John. Classic 1970s stuff. As they aged they also got into Muse, Foo Fighters and My Chemical Romance. They also blend KPop and J Rock into their writing. Pau is also into classical music.

They played When I'm Alone at the Lima, Peru concert the other day and the audience sang the first verse with Dany and they were so loud and so GOOD, that Dany's voice started to crack and her mouth was quivering. The emotion of hearing a Spanish speaking audience singing their song in English with her was actually amazing. It hit Dany hard...me too. It is one of the best Warning concerts I have seen. I have a very hard time pigeonholing them to one or two genres other than rock/hard rock. I never hear any riffs that sound like copies to me and their song writing skills are so good, they ring as completely original to me. I can tell their influences, but I never feel like they are trying to sound like anyone else but The Warning.
Compare that to many emerging bands that sound like clones of bands from ten years ago. You could swap album tracks and a lot of people would hardly notice.

This performance was my first exposure to The Warning, like it was for many others, and I was definitely warned after seeing it. I love what Dany says about how much work goes into making an album cuz even though I'm not a musician, I love the experience of listening to full albums and I greatly appreciate the songwriting and musicianship that goes into it, especially concept albums like QOTMS. Pau has broken many drumsticks before and the way she responded to it in this performance of Survive is how she always does. That quote from Dany, "music is passion, music is hope, music is life" is probably her most famous quote cuz TWA always changes it to "Dany is passion, Dany is hope, Dany is life".

We always talk about Pau's ability to play like she does and sing lead. This really impresses me on this video in particular. Each time she comes out after playing she struggles to catch her breath but when she is singing she does it with seemingly little effort but we now know just how difficult it is. Especially, playing Survive where she sings much of the lead.

Their Enter Sandman cover video caught my attention, this video sucked me in and then Dust to Dust sealed the deal for me. It's been the Warning pretty much every day since for the last 2 years. I'm 45 and normally listen to 80's Hair Metal, Rock, Heavy Metal, along with the Metal and Rock from the 90's and up. Something about how they play and how much they enjoy it draws me in. Saw the Live in Chicago this year after the meet and greet. Their dad Luis was very friendly, Rudy their manager was very approachable and cool, and the girls were sweethearts. My wife and I ended up in front of Ale about 2 rows back from the stage and they were a blast to watch. They had so much fun and made it entertaining. Rudy took Ale's setlist and gave it to my wife. Perfect ending to the night. Oh and Pau only broke one stick. The piece landed on a cymbal and she knocked it off at the part you noticed.

  • @roywall8169
    @roywall8169 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Pau does use the single pedal. I cannot speak for her, but I have noticed that she does not have her kit set up like many pros. My theory is that with her diminutive size (5 foot even), she has reach challenges that most players do not face. She makes up for her lack of wingspan with creative patterns and technique. She started striking her cymbals on the upswing, coming off her toms at a very young age for instance.

Like so many others, this is the performance that drew me to The Warning. I saw a short on Instagram of Pau drumming during the close of Unmendable, followed it to TH-cam and thus began my trip down the rabbit hole. I grew up on "Classic Rock" only it was just rock back then. The music changed. Corporations took over. Everything was based on formulas. I stopped listening. The Warning brought me back. There are many reasons why I am so vested in their journey and why I became a Patreon. When I watched this TedX through, the first time having seen it dozens of times since, it was the feels...joy, passion, family, hope, inspiration. Great reaction. I know you were a fan before, but now, "You've been Warned."

"You ever just like seeing people be excited?" This is my whole obsession with live music and sports. When musicians love what they do, you can see it on their face...these 3 are prime examples. All 3 members of Green Day, Brent Smith from Shinedown, Josh Katz (sp?) from Badflower...the passion just oozes out of their facial expressions. Then to see excitement and greatness in sports is the same thing. Or to see celebrations of achievement. Bro I'm 1000000% on board with you on that for sure.

Her bass lines can carry the entire tune when required, allowing Dany to play as sloppy or tight as she wishes or even stop playing without us feeling that something is missing. Streetheart was the first show I ever worked on - I was a stage manager for a triple header when I was 16. I was such a huge fan of Kenny Shields already that this was my first taste of being starstruck lol. He sat cross legged on the stage with me and just listened to the band tune up and get prepped - it was such a religious moment for me lol. Rest In Peace, Kenny. I was fortunate enough to build a bit of a relationship with them over the 6 or 7 years of working with the band!

@@Beldvlmnt Very cool! I listened to a LOT of Canadian Rock during the 80s on CHOM out of Montreal. US radio in my area (VT) wasn't playing anything much that I liked and Canadian rock was excellent!
Another band that caught my ear was Leggat (the Leggat brothers), their double LP "Illuminations" was great - White Flags in particular was a favorite of mine.
I won't continue to list the great bands from North of the border.....way too many and now The Warning is my 'go-to' rock band
I've looked forward to your The Warning reactions since your first one, really appreciate your perspective (even if I'm not a tech nerd!).
There's a lot to be impressed with by these sisters, for sure. Keep going!

Re: the click track. One of them, I think it was Pau, said in a showcase instructional thing that after their recording sessions for the Error album, David Bendeth, the producer, gave them the samples that Pau incorporated into her laptop's software for use on the backing track. But it was such a different thing for them (from what they had been doing with their previous albums) that she and Ale had to rehearse a new way to synchronize their playing so that they could stay in time with each other providing the foundation for Dany to key onto. So, in a way they are doing a click track but also varying off the leading and falling edges of the beat. I think this gives them a much more warm, natural sound.

Pau does use double kick drum pedals, BTW. They're DW, I'm pretty sure as that is the brand of her usual drum kit. There are a few songs that you can hear it on, like Evolve for example. As with all their music, they only do things in songs when it makes sense. Dany, Pau and Ale all perform the songs as composed as much as possible. They aren't vying for the spotlight, playing a solo just to be playing a solo. That's one of the many things I like about them. I think one of the problems with Rock in the late 70s and 80s was the seemingly obligatory solos during concerts. Every member had to have one. Sometimes there were multiple solos during a performance. It became formulaic to the genre and underscored the excessiveness that prevailed and led to the demise of its mainstream support, in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with solos, per see, but they need to fit into the song's structure and motif. Yes, solos are fun to watch and they allow a musician to showcase their talent, but they can detract from the band, adversely impact the cohesion, and distract from the try focus, which is the music itself. I hate it that people ding Dany for not playing that many guitar solos, or for how brief the ones she does play are. Some even say she's not a lead guitarist but just a rhythm guitarist who sometimes plays lead. Dany is a musician. She plays multiple instruments (guitar, piano, and saxophone are the ones I know of) and does so probably better than any of her critics.

Yep. I'm a fan of Nightwish, and they only use a solo if it fits the song, and none are overdone. That's just one of the things that drew me to The Warning. Also, they had me hooked from the first song I ever heard.

Pau is beating the drums like they owe her money, she is a tiny ball of energy. I wouldn't be surprised if they were at least inspired by the old school rock I grew up listening to in the 70's and 80's. We have been warned 🤘

I’m sure someone has already said this, but regarding the broken drumstick on SURVIVE-watch it again closely. Shortly after Pau sits down she breaks a stick. The other half comes to rest on one of the cymbals. You later noticed it flying of the cymbal when she hits it again!!

Pau didn't Break two drum Sticks she only broke one, when she Broke the Stick a Big Piece flew and landed on the Symbol so when she hit that Symbol that Piece Flew in the Air and it looks like she broke Another stick but no she just Broke One. Back in 2018 The Warning opened 2 Shows for The Killers and Pau said She was going to give away 3 drum sticks on Patreon that she used during the concert to 3 lucky winners and I was one of the Lucky winners, The Drum Stick is Pink well Half of it is pink the top Half is all beat up chipped and almost broken in Half and the bottom half is still Pink and that's where she Autographed it.

Bear in mind at this time, Dani's English still had a heavy Spanish accent. You can hear it so much more then, than in her interviews now. There was a great back story to what she was talking about as far as 'changing' to meet the record label's expectations. Let's just say, an executive suggested a couple things so egregious that got him 'escorted' out of their house by their father and their manager. BTW this performance of Survive was the 1 that got me hooked on TW so many yrs ago. Pau is just a monster!!!

A lot of newer fans have heard about that record label incident, but don't know much else. Is that where somebody addressed Pau as "Hon"? Other details? Also regarding Dany's [and all of them] accents. "Now" they have a fairly distinct "West Los Angeles" accent. Every so often, Dany's pronunciation of S/Z moves to East Los Angeles [heavily Latino area], and Pau occasionally moves up the 405 Freeway and gets a tiny bit of "Valley" accent.

Rewatching, I caught your reference to Streetheart's cover of Under My Thumb. The bass line at the end was blistering, as in blistering my fingers to learn it. Although that band caved in, a very successful band arose from the ashes.

    Carambas...!!
Every time I come back to this presentation I remember what happened to me the first time I saw it complete.
It's only there that you see three beautiful creatures from whom you expect to hear sweet, tender, mellow, very melodic and perhaps even funny songs...
In the end, you don't really know what happened in those 18 or 19 minutes of your life.
Slowly you are assimilating how you survived two powerful storms and a hurricane...
You are remembering that at some point among the electrical storm with hurricane winds, earthquakes and an erupting volcano, causing you an unexpected shock,
you find yourself in the eye of the storm with a warm sun that calms you and fills you with light, returning your soul to your body...
It is the most tender and sweet voice of an angel that shakes you unexpectedly (Ale's voice)...
    Once again the unexpected.
As you become aware of what happened, you will also realize that you are hopelessly, and surprisingly, trapped in one of the coolest experiences of your life.
Even though you had been warned!!
    Greetings from México

I am not a huge fan of tracks, but I understand why a three piece would need/want to use them. It only really bothers me when a band literally cannot step on stage without them. There have been many The Warning shows where the click goes out, and the band does not even miss a beat (most times the audience does not even realize it).

Pau at that time controlled the performance click etc. Used a peddle on the left and right to trigger it, which is why she may play so open. They now share the management of the songs. Pau set's up with a 16,17 and 18" on the right. Yes sing and drum, there aren't many and most of them voices modulate (not the right word) to the strikes. Pau does not.

They have actually always played with metronome, that’s how they’ve learned, how they rehearsed, therefore, that’s the reason for them to play theirs songs ALWAYS the same, and of course: the reason for them to sound that good live; it’s kind of strange that a rock band has evolved and matured as session musicians, that’s something that has played very good for them, since now they’re, at their very young age, very good at their instruments, and very well structured as a band; not too many bands can sound that much as they sound at their studio albums like The Warning does.
