Dany wrote this song as a last minute homework project while at Berkley College.. She has said in interviews that she gets teary eyed when she hears the crowd sing it back to her. I think she was 14 or 15 when she wrote this.
Dany wrote this when she was homesick. She missed her friends and hometown. She wrote this in 2015 and is on the XXI Century Blood album.

Great reaction! I cringed when you paused just as Dany went into her solo, but then you redeemed yourself by backing it up to the beginning. This song was written by a very homesick 15-year-old Dany when she was far from home in a summer program at the Berklee College of Music, and she had an assignment to write a song, and she was just feeling so bad missing her home and her friends, so that, late at night mere hours before the assignment was due, she still had nothing. Then she just reached down into her feelings and came up with this masterpiece!
Written at Berklee College of Music by an extremely homesick Dany when she was 15 and desparately needing last minute inspiration to write a song as a solo homework assignment (which is why there are no harmony vocals). One of the truely great songs from the early years of the band that remains a popular sing-along during their headlining shows. ADD: Written in English, her second language!!
Hearing Dany sing at Tetro Metropolitan is amazing but the biggest challenge would be the altitude of Mexico City. Her ability to hold those high notes without cutting them off early or just hearing her winded. It is an incredible performance, I love this band❤.

@@eaglezone45 I saw a clip of her doing a quick "get pumped" workout just before a performance - she dropped to the floor and did 10 quick "man-style" military pushups - none of that "knees touching" silliness. Girl stays in SHAPE. They all do - Pau practices her singing while running on a treadmill so that she has the duration and wind to play drums and sing at the same time!

This is one of my favorite Warning songs. There's a video of it besides this one. It's one of their older songs. I totally agree with the lighting. The technician doing this is really good.
That crunchy guitar that comes in after the first chorus always gets me. Sounds so effin' good.

Yeah it's funny because I remember your reaction to this song specifically for how Pau catches your ear with her Hi Hat work in the verse, as usual.! I also head tilt along with Pau everytime I listen to this song. I think it didn't hit ya right away because Dany opens the song solo a bit longer, if I remember right. Why I Absolutely Love the emotion of this version. I'm not the technical expert as you are, which I really appreciate and respect by the way, so I may be off a bit. Thanks for all the reactions. When I’m Alone is Dany’s heart on full display, fearlessly sharing her feelings and vulnerability. It’s just deeply personal. I appreciate your reaction and your personal insights. However, if you get a chance, take a moment, hit play and sit back and just experience this moment. Picture a teenage Dany, far from home at a music school in Boston and homesick, solitary and struggling with her muse, and the need to be creative on call. This incredible song is the result. In my opinion, a perfect rock song.
Oh yeah, about that solo…it is unlike the usual solo - it has the addition of a single note…a little improv moment in tandem with that ‘stink face’.
I haven’t been to a rock concert in decades….but I’d buy a ticket for the Warning.
I love the guitar solo in this song. Like most of Danny's solos, it's not that it's amazingly fast or super technical, but it fits the song perfectly. Emppu, the guitarist for Nightwish, does the same thing, plays a solo for the benefit of the song, not to show off.
The solo is just what's needed and fits perfectly. Pure and no extra fluff. That's a feature of Dany's solos, they leave you satisfied without too much whipped cream
This song has always had that Boston tone to me, in the band sound and especially the guitar solo tone - just thinking, she did write it in Boston😂

Dany is so talented. Her vocals are ridiculous in this one. Simple but powerful. These 3 just never ever disappoint. I love the rest of the song after the lead in by Dany...but I could have just had that the entire song and been happy. I'm hoping this accelerated release in individual songs from this concert will continue and we'll get them all. Great reaction as always. Keep it up.
This was the 'Jar' song for their concert in Charlotte a few months ago. Dany sounded so excited when it was pulled. It's easily one of my favorite songs by them and it kind of reminds me of some songs from Paramore and Foo Fighters.

Exactly. They have changed the song a little though. During the first verse, Dany is much more "alone" than in the original version.
I LOVE the low end tone of Danys singing voice ! Its low but still very feminine and for some reason I dint even understand its very pleasing and different to my ear.
I dont think in my whole 53 years I've liked a band this much , everything about their music and lyrics become a part of my me and I feel connected in some weird way.

This is one of the few old songs the keep bringing back to onto the set list for their shows. It may be because of what it means to Danny, It may be a fan favorite, or it’s a fan favorite because the fans know it means something to Danny. It’s fun to see how the songs has changed and DPA have improve their playing and their voices have changed, always a treat.

One of their very few songs in a major key (G Major). Pau has said that she very much prefers minor keys which is pretty evident in their songs. (One exception being the "you shall remain" part in Disciple, which goes to A Major).
I think this is their only song without backup vocals... for obvious reasons. (except for the crowd of course)
And Breathe (Pau's song - you can hear it during intermission) - a very rare live performance song.
You and Don need to do some collaborations. The Warning should have some new singles coming out before to long. They are recorded it's just up to the label what and when they are released.

Dany has lights in her guitar neck also, check it out in the beginning when she looks up to the crowd
Saw them live a couple months ago. Something interesting. While pau & ale are very tight. Ale is NEVER out of time. On the rare occasion that Pau or Dany seemed to get a little bit off, they dropped in w/ Ale. I think that is one of their key sound signatures. The drummer is not the main time keeper. It's the Bassist. She is also deadly accurate on her notes. I went with a friend who was a pro bassist. He said she did not miss a note all night.
You are right, Ale is the main time keeper, their sisters call her "the human metronome", Pau once said she's like a machine😂. She has also perfect pitch (absolute hearing).
All the above is kind of annoying for their older sisters sometimes because they said she's correcting them all the time🤣😂
She's a musical prodigy, Spector featured artist since she was a child (13 years old), she can play piano, saxophone and sing lead (even when she does not like it).
And yeah, your friend is right, if you can catch a couple of wrong notes from Ale in a whole concert, you got a lucky day. She's a perfectionist, and she practices that much that she can play that bass in her sleep😂

Notice when she started the song she was alone with one light only on her. She sang the song alone all by herself ( no backups singers) and when the song ends again only one light on her. This shows how much thought they in there performance.

Concerning the opening lighting design... the opening lines in the song Dany sings that she only sees in black and white. That blue colour bleeds out the colour like the blue tone in old b+w TVs. It looks more black and white than a white light would.
Also, others have told you where you've heard the song before... Its slightly reworked from how they did it years ago. When they overhauled Enter Sandman a couple years ago I figured that maybe a few years from now they could do an album re-imagining all their early work. The song writing was all there, as this performance shows, but their arranging and performance skills are still developing. Who knows where they could go. (they could also use the idea to satisfy any contractual obligations, lol)
When Ellen helped them go to Berklee, they had to come up with a song towards the end of the course, Danny was feeling frustrated cos nothing was happening, but then...🎉💥🔥🎈💯🌎🌍🇲🇽🇺🇸🇨🇦🤞👏⚠️⚠️⚠️🥁👍✌️🎸🤘🕯️🌌

Great reaction, and yes, you are familiar with this song as you have done a reaction to the 2017 tedx show. This song has been modified since then, where it is just Dany and her guitar until the 2nd verse. All the much better and emotional, in my opinion.

Pau mentioned that even though she is the drummer, Ale has better timing than her, that she is like a machine and also that Ale has perfect pitch, so technically speaking she may be the best out of the three. Also the fadeout at the end is perfect considering the lyrics "When I'm Alone".

if you saw all three songs they played in the Feb 2017 TEDx, that was likely when you heard this song for the first time... i think it was the 2nd one they played that day...
Suggestion: it might be fun to do a two-fer of both renditions, the one from TEDx 2017 followed by this one as a comparison of changes made...

It's notable, isn't it, that Dany's is the only voice in this song? No backing vocals from Pau or Ale. Very much in keeping with the meaning in the lyrics.
To me it looks like there may be two spots, one directly overhead, and one further forward.
And yeah, she does a really good job portraying the emotion that the song represents. It's vaguely possible that the song still chokes her up after all these years, but she's a good enough performer that I suspect it's deliberate. Either way, it's certainly effective.
"How do you make two instruments sound like it's sixty instruments?" That's *mostly* basic soundboard stuff (amplification, reverb, etc.) in combination with a good full arrangement (guitars are, after all, capable of hitting several notes at once, albeit not at the same extreme level as a keyboard instrument); but I think there are times when they also use some layering (pre-recorded parts playing underneath as a backing track).
And yeah, this song doesn't really show her off to maximum effect, but Pau is one of the best drummers I know about, and also quite a good vocalist. I would absolutely love to see her do a collab with Layne Stein and/or Adam Rupp, with a drum/beatbox duet (or trio) for the bridge.
