  • Do you ever like watching something from its original production? For example, Japanese animation in "Japanese" with English subtitles? The Witcher is originally from Polish folklore. Here is the difference between English and Polish. Big thanks to my compadre and partner in crime, Shinkei Dei, for pointing this out!

      Actually, it is how Geralt is in the books too. He is always going on, and on, how he doesn't care, is numbed emotionally, and is SO neutral to everything... and then he gets involved, every, single time! Of course, half the time, if not most of it, showing a soft side bites him in the ass. (One might think things don't work out well, because Geralt tries so hard to not care, while he cares too much)

    The thing that not everybody knows is that the novel explains why is he having two swords. The both are for monsters, witchers are not expected to fight people. Just different types of monsters need to be treated with different type of steel. The "one is for human" was a folk rumor and prejudice, that Geralt needed to struggle with all the time. If he had to have a fight with human he was always saying "the iron sword is not for humans... it's for monsters, too" (implying his opponent is a monster - a horrible man). So when he says "the one is for humans" to the thugs he is just being sarcastic and implies if they could gently fuck off

    I am Czech, and I can't imagine myself ever playing Witcher series in any way other that Polish dub+Czech subs. Both languages are pretty similar so I quickly get the hang of Polish just enough to not have to stare at the sub all the time, and the Czech names for places and items and characters match those from the books, which is a plus as well.
    All in all, after the three games, I must say Polish Geralt is THE witcher for me, English one sounds just wrong. Hell, I'd say the whole game voiced in English sounds wrong to me. It seems like it loses some of its atmosphere by bringing in fake English accents. But that's just me.

      Depends on what you’re background is. The point of localization is for everything to feel cohesive from the cultural perspective of the people that speak the language or their assumptions about other dialects. So it would make sense most Eastern Europeans would prefer the Polish version over the English version but as an American it is directly the opposite. The grit in Geralt’s voice in the English version makes more sense to me with my background. At the end of the day though it is just preference mixed with whatever bias you accumulated from whichever you first played the game with.

      I have played the entirety of Witcher 1 and 3 In polish(haven't fully completed 1 yet) and it was amazing, The voice acting is far more colorful in my opinion, and it adds to the atmosphere of the whole world. only thing I prefer from the english dub are the Scottish dwarves. Jacek Rozenek is the definitive Geralt. He's everything the character needs to be. His normal tone is not expansive, but he always avoids to fall flat. He can play hardened, disillusioned veteran. He can play romantic leading man. He can play coolly sarcastic. You can believe bandits crapping and pissing in their pants at the sound of his voice. He can be warm and fatherly (with Ciri), appropriately delicate (if he brings bad news to women), can be awkwardly funny (when he does something he's not suited to- like play hide and seek with children or stage acting). He hits all notes.
    Cockle's performance can be described in 3 words: a growling monotone. It may be OK as a standard tough guy voice, but doesn't cover anything else.

    As a Polish guy I prefer Polish not because English Geralt sounds like Batman, but because a lot of Polish cultural references are lost in translation.
    I also like how the people have different ways to express themselves depending on their social status in Polish, while English has dialects, which is also cool, you couldn't do that in Polish because all of them sound so different from standard Polish since they were heavily influenced by other languages. Plus, I love the usage of Old Polish words in the Polish version :) But English is quite good, too.

Jedyny plus że postacie w wersji angielskiej mówią w rożnych akcentach _Irlandzi, Szkocki, Gerald oczywiście American English, brytyjski itd. jimmyshousevideos I have not read the books (I wish I had) supposedly gives much more in-depth character details, but due to their profession they are suppose to be cold blooded and not generally stripped of emotion. Geralt has some humanity/personality left in making him stand out from an already dwindling breed. And of course he is the protagonist.

    • @jimmyshousevideos
      @jimmyshousevideos 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Reb00t R0b0t.exe I haven't read any of the books either, but Geralt himself says several times that the mutations striped him of emotion, even though he definitely shows sadness, joy, anger, etc. at certain moments of the game. I don't know which is true but if he is not supposed to have emotion or at least not able to express them to any extent then the English voice actor does an amazing job of giving him great character while suppressing those emotions.

    Hard to call which is better. 2 different interpretations of the character. I'm more familiar with the English version. The English voice acting gives us a Geralt who is more world-weary and worn-down, which works. The Polish version gives us a Geralt who is more suave and in his prime, which also works. This really goes to show you the high production value of this game; the developers didn't half-ass anything.

    Polish is incredibly subtle and nuanced, every last word has multiple shades of meaning that you just don't get in an English translation (much less a dub). IOt's usually spoken much softer too, making it all the more shocking and abrasive when somebody is loud and speaking informally. It doesn't help that the Polish actors sound like they did their scenes all together, and the English ones sound like they read their lines one by one out of context.

    • @android584

      I've had that realisation that dialogue for games is probably performed individually by each voice artist at their home studios, possibly without anyone reading out the other characters' lines.

    Naturally the Polish one is a bit more polished (heh), but the English ones are still localized. And Clint Eastwood Geralt probably appeals more to Western audiences than the more down-to-earth Polish variant, even if he does have a nice voice actor.

    Writer Jakub Szamalek on Jacek Rozenek's portrayal of Geralt:
    I think that the fact that he's playing the Witcher does influence how
    Geralt is received and how he's considered by the players. So absolutely
    I do agree that he is taking a part, willingly or not, in creating this
    particular character and he's doing a great job. Of course Doug Cockle
    is also very good with the English version but Jacek Rozenek is just
    amazing in how he plays Geralt and I love his work. What I really like
    about it is that Jacek Rozenek has a very deep voice which of course
    befits a fantasy hero but there is something, something tender within it
    which I think gives a very good impression of Geralt who is of course,
    this macho warrior the best sword fighter in the north but he is also a
    tender person in a way behind this veneer of machoness I think there is a
    very sophisticated and interesting person. I think Jacek's voice gives a
    great impression of that in a single world or a single uttering.

      @Cryer24597 I've played the entire game in Polish. IMO it's better in almost every aspect (expect for the fact that English version has accents). Especially Geralt sounds better. Probably because the voice actor acts and shows emotions sometimes (no offense to the English VA, but he's monotone af, and Geralt isn't a generic fantasy action guy).

    • @duven3040
      @duven3040 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Cryer24597 There is no way English Geralt sounds better than Polish Geralt. English Geralt is as if the guy who voiced him had this neck bindings which dogs have to not bite themselves lol, in order to sound deep. Original comment is so right mate lol :D i was thinking the same, english geralt is so empty and after finishing the game (a lot of time in sidequests, too) in Polish with Czech subtitles (as a Czech person) i must say it brought to me much immersion.
      To those of you who prefer the "badass" empty Geralt: remember that Geralt was never meant to be a meathead badass. Sapkowski never wanted him to be like that. He's not just a stupid monster slayer, as some people, due to english dabing, think.
      So remember that a character doesn't have to sound empty and tough in order for him to be what he is.
      And yes, maybe the english version had 10 times larger budget. Maybe it does have larger voiceover cast. But for those of you who haven't tried the polish version, try it. You won't be disapointed. It's much more immersive and realistic

Even very bad polish movie had better voiced actor than english dub. Also only polish version gives you a full experience of the witcher and it's climate which is based on polish culture. English is a poor language and it makes simple things like jokes or swearing very dull. It's good for call of duty or battlefield games but not for the witcher.

    The Polish original (I think it's the original dub?) sounds more like realistic conversation, whereas the dub has more of a theatrical quality to it. Both are very good, as to be expected of a game as highly esteemed as this one.

    Its a matter of being used to the voice so if a brit says "the polish voice doesnt fit geralt" and a pole says "the english version sucks" its only because both of them were already used to the voice that accompanied them throughout the whole game. On my 3rd run I decided to go with english dubbing and when I heard geralt speak polish while watching this video I was quite shocked at how he sounded but got used to it.

      +Filip Kička Our languages have much in common. There are quite a few archaisms in The Witcher books, so obviously CD Projekt RED wanted to stay true to the source material written by Sapkowski. You would understand more, if the script would be entirely in modern Polish.

    I've not started to play The Witcher with this one, i won't lie, when i first played the trilogy i played the first two games and the 3rd main game using english dub. But since i played Metro 2033 using Russian dub and thought that fits the game much better, i resolved to play The Witcher 3 using the original language.
    Since i am a player that always plays on the hardest difficult possible, that made me extend my witcher gameplay for a few hundred hours, cuz the Polish language sound so much better, that i had to restart my whole gameplay from game 1.

    I like watching original dubbing in things. Because... I can feel exactly what author wanted me to feel. I understand things they wanted to tell, to show. But I don't hate translated dubbings.
    I watched things in many ways:
    Original, japanese anime. Polish anime... ITALIAN (yep) anime with polish lector ("voice over"... man or woman who read translated text in native language but without native dubbing) etc. So it doesn't matter that much. If I can - I prefer original with subtitles, but I don't need it that much.
    Some things I was sentimentaly linked with but original dub changed it. Like Digimon, Sonic X for example. I watched it in polish, but later I've seen original japanese dubbing and it was even better. But there are still few things I don't watch in original... because I don't need this if I have other already.
    But some things is better in non-original dubbing. For me Crysis 2 is epic in polish. And I don't want to play in english. But in other games I prefer english over polish. That's soooo complicated.

    • @FeatheredGryphon
      @FeatheredGryphon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Studio is polish, I think even if they made polish and english dubbing, still polish will be more original version imo. English dubbing has been made to make game world-wide known. And polish dubbing in Witcher has more atmosphere imo, cause it is abou slavic mythology, so it's not surprising.

    • @FeatheredGryphon
      @FeatheredGryphon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Like Mvlibu said, it's game based on polish book, based on slavic mythology. It's game created to be polish, no matter what. It's the same when You play game as some adventurer in ancient egypt pyramids. You are sure it's about Egypt. Witcher is thing that is really really polish product. Studio is polish and they made polish/english language so practically polish was either created at the same time, or earlier. It's really about polish folklore and jokes. It's not only about where the game was made - it's about culture, which is the most improtant thing in Witcher.

    Polish Geralt always a bit more dangerous sounds yet nuanced and subtle but I honestly like both versions.
    I just grew too familiar to the English version of Gerald over the years but the polish version is amazing. I played it in German the first time (I am German), then in English in New Game plus and afterwards the whole game plus the DLCs in Polish. They did a very good job in finding good voice actors. Usually, there are often big issues regarding side characters aso - not here. With Kingdom Come Deliverance and the Witcher 3 even though Rockstars Red Dead 2 is obviously great as well, the eastern European companies are really leading the RPG market and have becoming examples, not only for great games but also for honesty - a rare trade these days.
