    Hi all!
    Thank you for watching this video, I think it's the one I am most proud of so far? (don't want to fully commit to that yet tho) There are still 2 things I'd like to touch upon:
    1. At the end I say that I recommend having the proper expectations when starting the books, but didn't really define what I meant by that. Luckily for you, @cronkthebookguy has a video introducing The Witcher! There are a few things he gets not quite right, but overall he does a good job explaining the difference between the what people think this series is, and what it ACTUALLY is.
    th-cam.com/video/POrkp0NRrqc/w-d-xo.html
    2. Also, there is an AMAZING 5 episode series of videos by @alienplatypus1596 that go through all different aspects of the Netflix series. Again, I don't agree with 100%, but perhaps with 99%. They really touched upon everything and did so much research. I can't praise these highly enough.
    th-cam.com/video/F9R85IwO460/w-d-xo.html
    3. A commenter reminded me of how important culture is when adapting a work that it is based on. Central European and Slavic cultures are an integral part of the Witcher that just were not captured at all in the Netflix adaptation. BUT! A team of fans from the Czech Republic called The Witcher Stories have been creating video original vignettes set in the Witcher world and they have so much heart and soul poured into them. Hiiiighly recommend checking them out: www.youtube.com/@TheWitcherStoriesCZ
    4. Importance of translating the Witcher correctly: th-cam.com/video/Gxg5INjNopo/w-d-xo.html
    Happy watching!

      The tv show fucking sucks, I hated it from ep 1.
      Such an omega let down from the godly witcher games, even 1 is better, tbh a lot better and beautiful than the games, I don't care if it's dated, it's what drew me in, they made it when they had no money, and it's got some flaws, but it's soul shines through.
      And tbh, whilst I like the books, the games blasted the books too.

    The 2 DLCs (especially HoS) for Witcher 3 might be some of the best writings I have ever experienced in video games. And the conclusion to certain characters we have grown so attached to and in love with for decades at the end of Blood and Wine is immensely satisfying. Another problem with seasons 2 and 3 of The Witcher is that they reveal to the audience early on that the Nilfgaardian emperor is Ciri's father. They should have left it as a big reveal for the final season, before that only showing him from the neck down (like the head of SPECTRE in the first few Bond movies before You Only Live Twice).

Witcher 3 is still my favorite game of all time to this day almost a decade later, so it felt like a dis-service to not read the books. I just finished Baptism of Fire last night. I gotta say, the very end with Geralt "properly" getting his 'of Rivia' title had be smiling ear to ear. Such a great moment. "It just sort of happened that way." 🤣⚔ Loved this video! Hi Wera, congratulations on the video! It's great to see someone passionate about The Witcher, and especially being from Poland, you have a much greater sense of the cultural impact of the work than I do (being Brazilian).
    First, I wanted to point out that I'm still reading "Time of Contempt," and wow! What an incredible book! I'm super excited to continue with the next ones in the series. And I totally agree with you that The Witcher 3 uses the best of the original material to create something crafted with a lot of care-it's one of those cases where the adaptation really lives up to the book/original material.
    The Witcher in Brazil, mainly because of the games, is quite an influential saga, and I think that, unlike in the United States, our translation is much more accurate as it was done by translators specialized in Polish. The tone of Sapkowski's humor, the sharp dialogues of the characters, and the whole "prophecy and the world don't matter" vibe but rather "the people I love and care about are what matter most."
    And about the series... No comments. The second season kills any possibility of coherence.... It destroys the tone of the work.
    Please, post more about the books! Do individual reviews, discuss theories if you like! I loved the video and congratulations on your work.

    • @wilsonbemloco83

      And one more thing about these cultural differences and capturing them. Here in Brazil, we actually have quite reasonable access to Eastern European literature, especially Russian-and I'm serious, many Brazilians read more Russian authors than South American ones.
      One of the things I've noticed watching the series, having played The Witcher 3, and starting to read the books, is that North Americans often miss these nuances. The examples you showed of architecture and clothing are perfect to illustrate this. The Witcher is not a medieval world like Game of Thrones is. And I think it really (REALLY) lacked someone with this cultural knowledge in the production of the series.

    • @valliyarnl

      Thank you for such a lovely comment! You’re the second person from Brazil to comment here and I’m truly surprised because I had no idea it was so popular there! I’m glad your translation is good 😊 I definitely will post more about the Witcher because it is really important to me. I will wait closer to season 4 release date or updates on the Witcher 4 for algorithm purposes tho :)
      One slight correction though, Poland is central not eastern Europe and we get quite touchy about it (especially the older generations) because we weren’t popularly considered Eastern before WW2 and the USSR. So some people when they hear “Poland is Eastern Europe”, or worse, say we are basically like Russia, it is quite touchy bc we literally were the first country to get the USSR out! The similarities we share with Russia are mainly because they also have a Slavic background BUT the Slavs originated from clans that were located in modern Poland! Architecturally we are much more similar to Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, etc (other Central European countries 😊)

      And thank you for the corrections as well! I apologize for my misinterpretation of those geopolitical and historical issues. I had no idea that the term "Eastern Europe" was only applied to Poland after WWII. I can imagine how that might irritate you, so again, I apologize for that. As I mentioned, I was guided more by the Slavic references. Thank you for this new knowledge and for the polite correction, and I'm sorry again for the misconceptions I had-it's like when some people think we speak Spanish in Brazil or something like that.

    It's nice when YT recommends an interesting video! I'm glad I found out about your channel! My take on a list would be the following:
    I really have trouble ranking the books individually -- every time I read most of them, I do multiple back to back, so they seem more like a continuum that I can't quite break off and it confuses me to try to separate them, so putting them as one big block of content, flaws and all, I'd rank them over the games at the top of S tier, since I do think the books are the ultimate The Witcher experience and definitely better in writing quality than what any of the games offer in general. There are some parts from the games that are comparable and the books also have some low points, but overall, I'd say the books are much better written, specially when it comes to the characters -- even Geralt is never done entire justice in the games, even after getting his memories back. The upside of the games is that they also offer the interactive experience of gaming, but I personally put story at the front, and thus the books take the win.
    Having played all of the games multiple times to completion, I know them quite well and they're easily some of my most beloved. I'd put the first game on B tier -- despite being the one I finished the most times (10 times), it really has a lot of problems from a story and gaming mechanics standpoint despite being so fun to play, so it is what it is, but as you said, its remake has the chance to change that (and I confidently think to even be better than TW3). The second game (which I've finished 6 times, I think -- 3 in each path), is strangely one that I think is less fun overall than the first game to me (somehow), but trying to be a little more objective, it's obviously a better game from a pure technical standpoint in all fronts, so I'll put it in A tier. The third game, which is uncontroversially the best one out of the 3 overall (and I've finished 5 times), is going to go to S tier, behind all of the books.
    I wouldn't even include the show in such a list since I think it doesn't even deserve to be called "The Witcher" and should be entirely forgotten, but if it gotta get in, I'll put all of the seasons in the very last tier -- even season 1, which tricks clueless people into thinking it's even a remotely acceptable representation of The Witcher, is horrible, and the thing that people cite as their favorite thing, which is Cavill as Geralt, is also a disgustingly bad representation of the character (and Henry was never even close to the best option to play him anyway, despite of what his fanboys think), so I don't cut any slack to that absolute disrespect in form of audiovisual media lol. The show as a whole is a stain on the whole intelectual property and it's a pity some people now visualize anything from the show when they think "The Witcher", 'cause virtually nothing there was done right...

    Also, I agree with you. The best part of anything Wither related is The Witcher 3. But I also happen to think that The Witcher 2 is a very close second. What CDPR did with Iorveth and with all of the original characters like Letho and Saskia is truly extraordinary. It isn't easy to expand a universe in such a way and make it feel like a natural extension of the original writing. But they nailed it in The Witcher 2, which feels like Sapkowski himself wrote the script.

    I've just finished reading the last book like 5 hours ago and I gotta say, while it is definitely too long I've really liked most of what's in it. At first I didn't really care for the Nimue storyline but the more it kept going the more I looked forward to that subplot, especially its ending i was basically giggling on the train as i read that. Another subplot i surprisingly liked was the Jarre/allout war one, not the battle itself but the parts inside the field clinic were so good in my opinion, really showed one of the worst parts of war, what you loose on the battlefield, almost shed a tear too while reading the fate of all those medics.
    Thank you so much for giving us those beautiful insights on Polish culture and architecture, I always felt like it was all so grounded in reality even if it all felt like fantasy at the same time. This video was absolute fire.
    Also one last thing I want to say, idk if I misunderstood this character or whatever, since I'm not familiar with the Arthurian legend but in my opinion right now Galahad is pookie.

    No idea why suddenly TH-cam recommended me this one but I loved it! It hurts seeing Last Wish and Sword of Destiny so low because I love this point in the story when it's so low stakes and I think Sword of Destiny is so iconic even more with the last chapter.
    Also loved your sincerity about the TV show!
    Also random trivia: I've heard somewhere our portuguese translation was said to be one of the best by Andrzej himself (how would he know tho lol) and I've read a lot about the english versions and how much they changed things. Some people made some great analysis and yeah there's even things missing.

    What a great video! I really like your passion, particularly when explaining your love for the A and S tier books and frustration with the second and third seasons. You convinced me to start The Last Wish. I got the complete series for 99p on kindle a while back but I've never felt motivated to pick it up. I'm looking forward to a more philosophical and less grunty Geralt.
    My only exposure to The Witcher is season 1 of the TV show, which was OK and even quite good in parts, but a little bitty in terms of storytelling. I'm not sure I'll continue after what you said. I can understand showrunners having to change some aspects when adapting from book to TV, but it irritates me when they think they know better and reimagine things or deliver what they think the audience wants.
    The info about the games was very interesting. It's great how the designers took inspiration from Polish architecture. I agree that adding touches like that to the TV show would have made the visuals much less generic and given it a more Polish flavour, like you've done with the language and outfit in the video.

    • @valliyarnl

      thank you for such a thoughtful and kind comment! Just a heads up: book 1 starts with Geralt being wounded and as he is healing in the Temple of Melitele, different people come in asking him questions, or he has a train of thought that triggers a memory, which leads into a short story. Over the course of the 300ish pages you go back and forth between Geralt being treated for his wounds (short story 1 explains how he got them) and the flashbacks/short stories.
      In my pinned comment I linked The Book Guy's video in which he goes into what to expect style-wise from the series because it is very specific and can easily turn people off if they have the wrong idea of what it is going in.
      I hope you love it!
      and thank you for the compliment of the "aesthetic" of the video :))

    I really appreciated The Last Wish and The Sword of Destiny because the short story format gives them such excellent pacing and variety of tones. Something the novels tend to lack at times.

    Such a refreshing video to see someone who isn't heavily biased, I find people who are die hard fans of the books try to find any reason to discredit the games as imperfect adaptations. E.G. Geralt growing a beard, triss as a love interest. But despite certain things, the games bring those incredible books to justice. Furthermore you do an excellent job at summarising the importance of book/game and articulating why netflix failed so bad in their adaption. Great video, earned a sub from me.

Like Regis for example, I could not believe how they got him perfect in so many ways from the way he is in the books and he is such a good, good character in the videogames. Every detail about his interactions is just encapsulates him in the books and it is so well done. He isn’t the only character captured so perfectly too. Nice video! To me it's funny how Netflix introduced me to the series after which i played all the games and ended with reading all the books. I defo think that Netflix dropped the ball so hard after the first season tho, for me the experience is worsened after i read the books because now i know what could have been. I'm also kinda sad like you mentioned that sometimes the translation takes away part of what is actually said in Polish, but i guess that's what every translation deals with. Witcher 3 is also my favourite game that I've played thus far, really hope that the next game will somehow do better but that will be difficult. I think you hit the nail on the head when you say that it's easier to point out what they kept the same for the Netflix show, especially season 2. Still can't get over Yen trying to sacrifice Ciri, Vesimir trying to make Ciri a Witcher, everybody allowing that travesty of a "party" happening in isolated and secret Kaer Mohren, etc. etc... It's depressing how far from the source material they went.

    Thank you for this! I had purchased Witcher III when it came out for my daughter. I had only watched a few moments of her playing it and was impressed by the graphics...however, did not spend enough time watching her play to get a feel for what it was about. Now I wish that I had. So...the 1 good thing that the netflix series did for me personally was this: I saw Witcher I, II and III available on steam last winter. And I did enjoy season 1 of the show...I didn't exactly understand why season 2 and season 3 felt like a mess, but I now understand why.
    I have since played the games Witcher 1 and 2, I expected 1 and 2 to be dated, but it gave me a feel for what it was about. Witcher II, I really liked as far as the story, and impact of the choices....Witcher III...oh my god. hands down the best game I have ever played. I'm not a gamer per se, but everything about this game is perfect. (just gave Uma the horsey ride to the destination), so I haven't finished yet. But playing the game has led me to reading the books. I LOVE IT SOO MUCH!
    Which then made me reflect back on the show...how severe must ones incompetence be to have taken a world, characters and storylines that in some cases are so well fleshed out and developed that if one simply copied them line by line would make for a good series...and then plough it right into the dirt? If I didn't know better, I would have bet all my Orens that the names of the writers are Ogg, Pogg and Rogg....
    12 stars out of 10 for Witcher III game. And thank you for your commentary on some humor in the books that is lost in translation. The Witcher games are the first video games that has caused me to burst out laughing at the dialogue. It's gritty, realistic, the fantasy elements even have the element of realism to them. Hats off to CD Projekt Red. If they remaster the game in VR. I'll buy another copy of it I love it that much.

    What a great video. I would love to read these books in polish but unfortunately I don't speak the language. So far I have only read the English translation and I plan on reading the German translation.
    I also pretty much agree with your takes about the series. I kind of enjoyed the first season, mostly because of some action scenes. But I was already skeptical when they kind of butchered the Renfri plot. I also physically cringed when Yen called Ciri "my ugly one" in the show.... it felt so undeserving compared to the books. Oh also Yen trying to kill Ciri.... yikes.
    But I will most likely continue to watch that dumpster fire of a show because I finally want to see Regis, Milva, Cahir and Geralt in action together on the big screen.

Został znerfiony, i odebrano mu całą tajemniczość.

    Have you read the new book in Polish yet? I’m rereading the series and would love to read a new one when the translation comes out.

    Random video find today. Admire your passion. I’ve never been to Poland but the Witcher experience of visiting the castle and playing some Gwent and sword fighting really holds some appeal! Not sure if it’s still being done but one day maybe. I can’t wait for the next games, Polands best export in my opinion

    • @valliyarnl

      haha it's funny you say Poland's best export because in a bit of the opening that was left on the cutting room floor, I call it Poland's best export (perhaps after Chopin and Marie Skłodowska-Curie?). 😂
      I think you're referencing the LARPing Witcher castle? Idk if it is still up after 2020 and I never took part in something like it but man it would be so fun! I guess for now I have to content myself with the Witcher themed bars in Krakow :)

      Yep, never Larped in my life but that looked fun. I’ve visited most of Europe (I’m UK based) so a good excuse to tick the country off my travel list. I’ve read all the books, I’m not a hardcore gamer, but I spent so much time in Witcher 3 I earned that platinum trophy for finishing it on the hardest difficulty. I never want to fight the last few bosses ever again. But then not do I want to watch the next season without Henry Caville 😞 Your English is really good, without accent? Impressive 👏🏻

      @@Anotherperson81 i was an international school student all my life so that explains the accent!
      also FINISHING THE WITCHER 3 ON THAT DIFFICULTY AND WINNING THE PLATINUM TROPHY!?!? that's insane. I don't even want to ask about how the Frog King battle went. He made me rage quit a few times, I must admit.

    • @Anotherperson81

      @@valliyarnl frog king sucked, especially as doubled up with the mage on the beach fight back to back. The worst by far was the final boss after the fights leading up to it. Ciri vs the Hags was also laborious. Still, great game, happy memories overall 😬

    As another long-time fan of The Witcher, this was a great video
    I'd also like to hear your thoughts on the animated Netflix movies, or movie I should say, which seem to be on a good path so far, especially with Doug Cockle returning as Geralt in the next one

    Im currently reading the lady of the lake for the third time, It's my favorite of the books BECAUSE of the filler. The world building is tremendous, the battle of brenna and the part with ciri near the end when she jumps between worlds are some of the highlights of the series in my opinion.

    For me the first Witcher game is the best and most unique. It might be dated in many ways. But the character, the atmosphere, music and settings are better imo. There is just so many memorable moments there...things that truly make you feel and care.

    Have you ever thought about playing "Thronebreaker", the spin-off game about Lyria and Rivia during the Second Nilfgaard invasion? It uses the standalone Gwent game for the mechanics, and I absolutely loved the characters and writing for it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on that game!
    And minor spoiler:
    It does intersect with the Baptism of Fire book briefly

    You missed Thronebreaker and Gwent :(. But honestly, when I played this game in 2019 it introduced me to Poland and other slavic culture. The Witcher 3 is one of my favorite games of all time without a doubt. The story, characters, and world are so perfect and I really look forward to Witcher 4. They say they are entering production later this year. I am stoked for it. I hope to travel to Poland one day. It's really refreshing to hear your thoughts on the franchise especially a native fan.

    I came here to see a Polish point of view about Witcher games, books and show, and it's exactly what i expected. :)
    About netflix show, i stoped in episode 3 in first season, it seems i didn't lost nothing after that.
    About the games my first play was in Brazilian Portuguese (my native language), then in English, and my third play i choose to play in Polish and it turns in another game and the immersion is bigger the language is like a music, Geralt is pratically another character(In a good way)

    Great video Hera! Your passion for this amazing universe is clear and it was really interesting and insightful to get a Polish perspective on the series. Netflix really did squander an amazing opportunity to do Sapkowski's world and characters justice... 😢pox on it all I say! Henry really did want them to stick to the material too. As for book rankings go Baptism of Fire is top tier for me purely for Geralt's hanza alone and their trek with the dwarves through the ravaged Continent.
    Some truly great characters introduced and their interplay with one another is just *chef's kiss*. Cahir, Regis, Angoulme and of course who could forget Milva ❤ who just jumps out of the page and is hilarious and sassy I love her so much ❤

    Gonna leave my two cents and like here, so the algorythm does its job. 😁
    I am from Switzerland I got introduced to The Witcher Universe when I was like 18 with Witcher 3 (obviously). The game was special for me during my years at the job trainee and it had such an impact, I bought the previous games and all the books. Now, I have all the books on my shelf behind me and I want to give them a reread as well, because while I loved to read it, I dont remember a lot of things and I got confused the longer it went. Maybe because I read not as much as I should, but I forgot so many details and I actually start to blame the german translation for it, because I know I had some difficulties to imagine the descriptions. But I will give them either a reread or more likely, I will give the audiobooks a shot, because they work for me better for whatever reason (i finish like 3 or 4 books in a year, while I finish audiobooks on a monthly basis, sometimes faster.) I liked the short stories very much, especially the conversation between Geralt and Vilentretenmerth and his two Sarrakanian warriors. And I remeber I sort of disliked Lady of The Lake because of how loooong it went. The last 150 pages are completely unnecessary and I actually got mad.
    So yeah, when the show was in production I already got high alerted, when rumours got around to cast an actress of anysort of "minority" (black, asian, ethnic minority) and they changed that very quickly. Season 1 did a good job when I watched it in 2019, but after Season 2... I mean, what is there to say, what hasn't been said already? I would go so far and claim, I, an amateur author, could have done a better job, than them. It was the reason I stopped watching it and will never watch it again. It's the biggest disappointment after GoT Season 8 and a prime example on how NOT to adapt anything. And yes, Season 2 made Season 1 sort of suck, quite the accomplishment. I will never understand the goal of Netflix's woke agenda to disrespect the cultural heritage of their source material, especially if said material sort of already is a minority when it comes to the big screen (There aren't many Medievil-Fanatsy novels with slavic influences).
    Was nice to hear your opinion as a polish native on perhaps one of the biggest cultural successes of your country worldwide and especially the fair critique. Would be nice to maybe hear more reviews about Witcher materials. 😁
