I wasn't in the DEPOT program but watch standing in the middle of the night was one of the worst things about Cape May boot camp. You're dead tired, exhausted and can barely stay awake and you don't dare nod off or God knows what punishment you would endure. I used to prop myself up, standing in a corner of the quarter deck's cement walls so that I wouldn't fall over as I watched the clock and prayed for my watch to end.
I went to DEPOT last month (Aug) and there is a schedule, everything is scheduled and they provided it to you on Sundays. It you do not swim you are gone.
Great video! I am meant to go to DEPOT in January. Wonder if anyone can provide more insight into the treading aspect of the swimming by test. From my understanding I know it’s 5min. HOWEVER, how much time passes from when you’re told to get back into water, recruits being lined up in the pool, and then the 5min start? Because if it takes about 3min for everyone to lined up in the pool, technically you’re in the water already and essentially treading until the 5min starts, therefore, you’re now treading for 8min vs 5min.
Thank you! Maybe someone who's been in more recently can answer this better, but as I recall it was pretty quick from the time we got into the water to when the five minutes started.
Do you recall if fail one portion of the swim test (let’s say treading), if when you retake the that part of the test and do remedial training, if you’re just going to retake the treading part OR the whole swim test itself (e.g., jump off a platform and swim the 100m). My treading water looks more like me doggy paddling in place very slowly and at times just moving a little to the front and then moving back, but I once did it for 11min. So not sure how much technique is graded. I’m great on land (marathon runner here), but horrible swimmer. I’ve been taking lessons since January to prepare for the swim test, hence that portion giving me the most anxiety.
Hmm I'm not sure, but my gut tells me they would have you do the whole thing over. As far as the aesthetic of your treading, I'm not sure how much that will matter. If you can keep your head above water, I would think that would suffice. But I'm only speculating on that one.
They had us get in the water in three rows (roughly 10 people in each row). Once your row gets to a certain point in the pool, your time starts, then the next row gets in and the same thing happens and so on. The first row gets out, then the next, and so on. You MAY get an extra 5-10 seconds in the pool but nowhere close to a full minute.
What are the specific day to day exams? What can I study now for those. I know my 11 general orders, ethos and command staff currently. I leave in two weeks
Knowing your General Orders is huge. Try to study Chain of Command, phonetic alphabet. If you have a Helmsman read it front to back and try to commit it to memory as much as possible.
how screwed am I gonna be if I can just barely meet the womens PT criteria. Am I gonna get held back or reverted if I cant keep up with exercises or timed obstacles? am I gonna be a burden for my class? I dont really care if its harder for me Im not gonna quit but I am wondering if it would be better for me or everyone if I waited until I more physically fit
You’ll be fine! If you are borderline passing all 3 portions of the pt test right now, TRUST ME, boot camp will have you passing comfortably by the mid to later weeks. I went in 2016 and was the same, barely passing, but when the final REAL pt test came in week 6 or 7 i believe, i passed everything VERY well
they do a benchmark test week 1/2 to see where everyone’s at. even the swim. and depending on where you are they have remedial or extra help for say the run or swim, where you wake up before everyone else to go attend a workout tailored to that portion of the test. don’t be afraid, they work with you and want to see everyone pass
@bl3ss948 is spot-on, and I would just add that effort is everything. If the cc's see you giving it your all, they will work with you. And I can almost guarantee you, because you are here even asking this question and thinking about it, that you will NOT be a burden for your company.
If I’m AD Air Force and make the in service transition into the depot program will me and my family PCS from my last station to my new one after completing the depot program or will my move be made out of pocket? Thanks
@@astok174 so I’m actually going to switch pretty soon next year. If you do a job similar to what you have now I’m pretty sure you keep rank but I’m not doing that and I’ll go back to E3… you make E4 right after you finish TECH School and from everything I’ve seen promoting is much better than the Air Force. Time in service also goes into promotions from my research
There isn't a one size fits all answer to this because if you don't have prior service, they're going to look at your professional experience in the civilian world and make a determination if that merits entry into the DEPOT program. The best I can say is to apply for it with a recruiter and see what happens. In the meantime, this website might help: www.forcecom.uscg.mil/Our-Organization/FORCECOM-UNITS/TraCen-Cape-May/Training/Depot/
I think this would be on a case by case basis. I know people with no prior service who got approved for DEPOT based on other professional experience, so it's definitely possible.

Answered most questions and will definitely learn the CC song now haha

What if you fail the depot PT?
What Rates go to Depot

Recruit comms be loud and proud…
Ranks, collars, pay grades, shoulder ranks and more but can’t remember.
I'll see you in Philly! October 15th!

Does anyone know the qualification for the DEPOT program if you're not prior servor or where you can find the information?

No it's not part of the Military. There a civilian volunteer group that helps with boating safety.
