As a retired Marine with multiple Tours as a DI, The Coasties are right up therewith us as far as wearing recruits out. Nothing but respect for the Coast Guard.
What do you think about the Air Force, Army & Navy?

Quebec 107 1980 vintage Coasty here. I spoke with a quiet WWII CG vet I worked with and asked him how it was. He said he landed Marines in the Pacific. He said it wasn't too bad until the landing craft was hit/disabled and he had to land with the Marines until another craft was able to pick him up. Special brotherhood exists there. RIP Chesty and MOH recipient Douglas Munro and Charlie Bucko CG/coxswain/Marine double purple heart recipient (Nam).
I am surprised to hear a Marine acknowledge that. I went through Cape May in 1968 and it was tough. After graduation we were told that we had just been through a Marine quality boot camp. It was eight weeks, and the Marines did twelve at that time (if I am correct). They told us the last four weeks the Marines did was combat stuff. And nothing but respect for the Marines!
Coastie boot camp has sure changed in 40 years, went through cape May in 1986.
You young folks are on your first steps in becoming heroes. Your first step was signing the enlistment papers. What you do will save lives. Signed. A salty sailor.

@ajax5467 If I had a chance to do it again, I would go Coast Guard. The Coast Guards' job is to help defend the coast of America and help US citizens. The Navy's job is to defend other countries. Deployments are extremely long, and the Navy is very undermanned. The Navy is under the defense department, and the Coast Guard is the Department of Homeland Security. Both give you the same retirement and VA benefits. Don't fall for the "see the world" line the Navy will give you. You will spend months and months at sea and even if you are in Port you will still have your duty days. What I am telling you is my opinion. Like I said, if I was going to do it again, I would join to help Americans, not countries with oil. After all that, I will say that my time in the Navy was the best time in my life.
The part of the swim test when you tread water was my favorite part of boot camp. Nice relaxing swim and no one was bothering me.
As someone who just graduated coast guard bootcamp it really hits how much they teach you both with strength, knowledge and discipline

@@xray471 I actually had a few I was in my last company with (I got reverted 2 times while in bootcamp) and usually they go through a different bootcamp, they still go to the same base as everyone else but from what I know they are in a company called depot where I believe it’s 3 weeks. The only reason I had two people from prior service that was in my last company was because the depot they were in they said were full so instead of having them wait they joined a regular 8 week bootcamp program. can remember watching the graduation parade about 60 plus years ago.
I’m sure it’s not part of their basic recruit training, but would enjoy seeing how our Coast Guard service men and women train for dealing with natural disasters, search and rescue, etc … Much respect for those who go out on missions to rescue those in distress.
A lot of formal OJT qualifications my man. From the first day you report to your first active duty station. And for real, no liberty until you get to be a qualified watch stander! Sucks sometimes - but it really motivates you. Those three crew members on a small boat? Trust me, they know their stuff! And every one of them knows they can end up like those poor salts who sortied during the blizzard of 78. RIP Charlie Bucko and medal of honor winner Douglas Munro and decorated hero Billy Flores and the rest of those poor coasties from the Blackthorn who died the same night I rolled into Cape May on the bus.
It's looks tougher now than when I went through in 1989. We didn't do the obstacle course when I was in bootcamp. I don't remember as much in your face yelling either.

I went to CG basic 1997. Got out in 2002. Went to college and then went Army Nurse Corps. Retired in 2022. All my Army years I think I had the most fun in the USCG.

So much more advanced than when I went through. Hopefully they didn’t get soft. My old CC was a prior service Marine and they flouted rules on TAPS, weather and everything. Total mind f***. Loved it!
I agree, more advanced in the way they teach the things a new Coastie needs to know. I hear it's still pretty tough.
Fun Fact: The CG stopped allowing CCs to strike recruits just before I went through! Seriously.
I recall getting a boon docker to the ribs by a CWO while in the prone position on the range with the M1. “You’re tearing up my butts!” Good times.

Grad: Jan 2020, first class to hold virtual grad ceremony due to COVID, without the COVID restrictions during training.
Recently was unfortunately medically discharged. Joining was the best decision I ever made. Wish things didn’t go the way they did medically and would’ve been able to do 20, but I guess that’s not my path.

The training never really stops in the CG. Unless you've served most people have no idea. On top of that I studied for years to advance to E-8 and then finally retire CWO4.

Definitely harder than the U.S. Navy boot camp in San Diego I went through in 1968. I was sent to Photographer school In Pensacola FLA. we had Navy, Marines and Coasties in that school. Back in the film and chemical developing days, now it’s all digital.

As one in the so-called Old Guard (I was issued the Donald Duck hat and blue and white jumpers, not the “new uniforms”), two things are clear 1) the currents recruits really have their shit together, way more than I did and 2) the training is way more effective and way tougher. X-Ray 21, Fall 1973. Radioman 2nd Class upon discharge. Best wishes to all shipmates.
Hey I was a RM 2nd class when I got out too :) but Romeo 129, 1988. Still had to learn Morse code when I went through.
That dang pool about killed me lol. It was alright swimming around but then to get up over that wall with no assistance. Blah I barely made it.

I wish Air Force boot camp had more practical training like this, not particularly the water stuff as it doesn’t align with the mission but... One idea that comes to mind: basic flightline ground traffic communication and phraseology, enough airmen will drive gov’s on or near the flightline where it would be justifiable training for recruits. Another would be to expand on self defense or some sort of introduction to martial arts like the marine corps does, Beast week is a joke. Good on you coast guard

Imagine trying to get in the coast guard as a 40 years old guy army prior service and having to go through all this BS again....
That's exactly what happened in my company Romeo 204. One gentleman turned 40 during training, he was an army vet with 3 combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Air force has more career selection/opportunities while coast guard has better stations/ quality of life. So, it depends on what career path you want to follow.

It is definitely an older video. The ethos the company says at the end during the graduation was taken from what it was and shortened to like 3 sentences now. So this video is at least a couple of years old.

One thing I can say I like about coast guard boot camp as opposed to BCT is that the civilians and permanent party are way more laid back always give encouraging words and tell their experiences when they went through it! The civilians in Army BCT are dickheads 😂

You’re not going to get blitzed the entire time you are in. Don’t wage your time doing the application if you’re going to smoke because you will get kicked out.

This military branch maybe small and unnoticed, but it is more professional and just better cleaner in comparison to the ARMY.

@mlc3415 ....hmmm, tbh with you, the USA CG seems more easy, less aggressive because they aren't doing anything of war like training. The ARMY is more, I think that the USA CG only says that of it being hard like the USA marine corps is because it is just trying to motivate recruits and the public to join, just like how the USA AIR FORCE says that it's the toughest physical military branch but it isn't.

Typically in reception they have masks, I think it's just to be sure that no one gets sick until they actually arrive to their training area.

Do they not do the gas chamber?
Coast Guard doesn't normally encounter gas like the other branches. Gas is usually used in warfare, and the Coast Guard does not go to war but instead defends the US on US soil (most the time).
No, coast guard boot camp does not have a gas chamber. However, at certain units you have to get OC sprayed
Damage Control A-school has a gas chamber since the DC’s are the CBRN experts.
Yeah gas chamber is only for DC’s since the majority of the service isn’t combat oriented. Mostly focused on firefighting and seamanship in CG boot camp
@@anthonyc7043 the coast guard doesn’t do gas chamber in boot camp but if you deploy to PATFORSWA in Bahrain, you do the gas chamber at SMTC in camp lejune.
