I joined the Coast Guard in 1996 as a legal immigrant, l gained a lot of knowledge and skills. I became a US citizen in 2000 then, l got out in 2003 my last unit was TACLET SOUTH down in MIAMI. I Became a cop in Texas got several instructor certificates now l work as a consultant making 170k a year only working 4 days a week, the Coast Guard was a stepping stone into something bigger.

The Coast Guard is a great organization. It also is often recognized as having the second hardest boot camp, with the Marines being the most difficult. If you are going to join the Coast Guard I highly recommend that you work hard to prepare for what you will encounter at Cape May. If there is a 1.5 mile run requirement you should train to run 3 miles. If you must be able to do 50 pushups train and be able to do 100. If you need to do 40 timed sit-ups make sure you can do 80. The same goes for swimming. You do NOT want to be put into what is called the RAMP (previously called PEP and RED BELTS) program at Cape May which is actually a disciplinary torture unit where they will brutally hammer on under-performers and disciplinary problem recruits 24/7. Also, before the MEPS medical screening practice the "Duck Walk" as it is the most frequently failed physical test in all branches of the U.S. military. Arrive at Cape May ready for success. I apologize if this is a stupid question, but are you eligible for the same benefits as the rest of the military, i.e. VA, GI Bill, 20 year retirement and VA loans?
I'm 23 and I'm really considering enlisting. I'd love to do Aircraft Maintenance. I also want to start a family, and nowadays it's harder than ever to afford that plus housing. I'm aware USCG get deployed, but I hear it's much more likely you'll be kept with your family compared to other branches.
@@matthewjameson8809 The pay and benefits are the same in the Coast Guard as in the DOD Military Branches. The rank structure is the same as that of the Navy. Yes, Coast Guard ships do deploy and there are USCG units overseas. My experience was extremely varied. I was stationed on a medium endurance cutter out of Florida, Electronics school, a LORAN-C station in Florida, Supply & Finance School in CA, a river buoy tender in KS, a Group Office in KS, a small boat station in Washington, an Area Training Team in CA, an Air Station in Florida, a District Office in LA, and the Pay and Personnel Center in KS. I saw duty as a shipboard and small boat engineer, an electronics technician, a finance, supply, and logistics specialist, a small boat coxswain and crewman, collateral duty EMT/Rescue Swimmer, Law Enforcement Officer, Trainer, aircraft supply, personnel specialist, and travel & transportation specialist. To say I enjoyed my 20 years is an understatement.

USCG doesn’t do rates the way other branches are. If you qualify on the ASVAB it’s literally just a waiting game as long as you don’t get in trouble. Also consider AET. Aviators love their life.

Had my mind made up to Join Marines or Navy the Night before going to a Recruiter a Friend who we hadn't seen in years after going away to College showed up on my doorstep heard from another Friend I was going into the Service we sat talking about the Coast Guard and didn't sugar told me the positive and negative positives out wayed negatives well never regret going in Stayed 20 years

@matthewjameson8809 Great Question my Friend I Took the test and Qualified at 20 but didn't enter until 21 and yes I started I got Married on my second enlistment. And for me they did a great job keeping us and families together unless you buy a house and put your fam where you want only separation anxiety is Deployment. If you talk to a recruiter ask him or her to shoot you straight no BS promises mine did yell me the truth good and Bad I had my mind made up so God Speed in your Endeavors I stayed 20 years reting in 1998 not one regret and Many find after one enlistment not for them I only meant one enlistment til I meant future Wife and they gave a Selective Reenlistment Bonus for Mk 12,000 only because I was getting married And Aviation field is great so few attaining rank is slower

if they are able to, I think 42 year olds should serve. It gives people who got screwed over from college another chance to help make ends meet.

Great video! I will say, the air force has its own version of the coast guard auxiliary called civil air patrol. They don't perform missions side by side with active duty though, so that's a cool part of the USCG.
I totally forgot about the CAP. I know it's not exactly the same but it definitely is a volunteer branch of the military. Thanks for the reminder!
Is the AF Auxiliary or Civil Air Patrol mostly little kids? I saw a kid maybe 13 wearing a uniform of the CAP.
@@stansmith4054 They are mostly adult pilots. They may have a group that's related for young people kind of like Sea Scouts.
@@LazyLocations No these kids were in a unit directing traffic at a town event. They said they were with some squadron which I can't recall.

Kinda cool, Im in that pic of the 29. It's been great for me, I've been in 18.5 years and looking at retiring soon. It hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows but it's been a good ride so far. I've learned and experienced a lot. Stuff that I will take with me the rest of my life, some good, some bad.
Hey, that sounds like you have quite the knowledge and experience. I gotta ask you because I am interested in joining the coastguard. I just graduated from university and tbh not really interested in my major but the coastguard sounds fun to me as I am an active person and like to do activities like hands on and not sit in an office all day. Should I get in touch with a recruiter and let them guide me from there or do you recommend another path?
@@grtf47 going into military, is never a bad option in my opinion. I can't speak for everyone, but it's been good for me. If you're interested, go talk to a recruiter. If you like action, I'd recommend talking to the recruiter about Boatswain's mate (BM) or Machinery Technician (MK) which is what I am. Good luck!

Hey brother, just wanted to say, that the air force also has a volunteer component, the Civil Air Patrol is the volunteer force of the air force with headquarters in Maxwell AFB. I've been a coastie for 14 years and also been a CAP member for about 20 and the CAP does actual SAR missions as required. Great content as always, keep up the awesome work shipmate!

Haven’t read all the comments so it may have been addressed, but the Civil Air Patrol is the civilian auxiliary to the USAF.
EM2 joined in 2017. Have done almost all aspects of the CG
I was an Electronics Technician in the Coast Guard. I got all of the benefits of being in the Coast Guard along with the quality education of electronics and advanced electronics training. Much of the gear I worked on was Navy equipment and I went to allot of Navy C schools. This education allowed me to get a high paying job immediately after getting out. I loved the Coast Guard and the only reason I got out was I wanted to start a family and being stationed on a ship was not conducive for that. Knowing what I know now, I would join the Coast Guard again with out a doubt. Semper Paratus!

In my teens I was a sailor on a USCG weather ship out of Portland Maine . Mid 60's . Winter North Atlantic Ocean Station duty prepared me for a life at sea as a commercial fisherman . Looking back after 77 yrs I realize my Coast Guard service was the best thing I ever did in my life - unbelievable benefits : Tier 1 VA Healthcare ( I get everything at no cost to me ) , $ 3,738 monthly disability payments from Dept of Veterans Affairs [ + SSA retirement ] , life insurance , a house ( no down payment or private mortgage insurance required ) , a degree in science education , and much more ...
22 years, 10 months, and 23 days here. I would do it over and over again if I could. Semper Paratus, shipmates!

6 years active USCG here, great video! My one addition to anybody wanting to go active for the job opportunities with small boat stations and more local shoreside work, is that the CG has a nationwide (and beyond) FLEET off cutters (ships). Going underway on a cutter is nigh unavoidable in your career, regardless of your rating. Cutter life isn't to say WORSE than other jobs that are seen more in the media, however it is very different, and I hardly ever see people talk about it. Just something to look into to manage your expectations, especially out of basic training where you have little to no bearing on where you get stationed first.

Correction sir. The USCG is not the only one with an Auxiliary. The oldest one is the USAF Civil Air Patrol dating back before WWII. Also the largest Auxiliary component in the US military.

I retired from the reserve in 2014 as a BM. I spent six years activated and miss it dearly. If I had nine lives I would love to come back in and train in a different rate. Now is the time for a young person to enter the Coast Guard. I would recommend active duty to get access to the most broad range of rates and training. ❤

Semper Paratus! USCG when I joined was told was less than the 40,000
When I joined I was told less than 36000 enlisted. That was the New York city police force at that time and we had one 311 steamer left used by OCS and no rescue swimmers but Vietnam was a real thing for the CG. Out of everything, the rescue swimmer was probably the greatest gain in the CG since steam. Oh, and Alameda Ca was a basic training base.

The National Guard has a volunteer force too. They are the State Military Reserves, jokingly called the SMRs(Smurfs). SMR were featured in the movie Delta Farce with Larry the Cable Guy. They actually have an Army, Air Force and Maritime units. By the way, I am not just trolling here. My son is trying to join the Coast Guard.

As a US Navy vet, we used to raz the US Coast Guard guys. We called them "Coasties" or "puddle pirates", but I have the utmost RESPECT for what they do! When everyone else has either headed into port or already there, the USCG is heading out to save lives. Who else would have the BALLS to take a 40 foot boat into 40 foot seas? MUCH RESPECT!

Dude it is not easier. USCG boot is hardier and more intense than Navy’s but you will not have to go. The rates are more intense because you have more collateral duties because less people. Have to do more with less. It is not so micro managed like Navy. More work but a heck of a lot more satisfaction. Not as many or as long deployments. Worked with many cross overs from many services every single one to be exact. Not a one of them regretted moving over to USCG and all said was best decision ever. They always say “USCG is the best kept Military secret”. They don’t have to talk about themselves and so not have to heavily recruit because it is very heavily sought after. They are “very” select on who they bring in and recruit. Just because you get a high enough score on ASVAB does not mean you automatically get into to USCG. They get to choose and select who they let in because it is small and jobs are tight. Like she says they pick people with good character and morale. They are very selective so you work with many people who WANT to be there and work hard. USCG goes all over the world as well which most don’t know as well. Been to many places overseas and spent way too much time in Caribbean, Central and South America. Believe me total 180 from Navy . I worked with Navy tons and spent tons of time on Navy bases all over world. I saw the difference ALL the time!

Sorry that wasn't realized for you. You can always join the Coast Guard Auxiliary and do non-operational stuff but still help in many ways

The main reason I want to join the coast guard is to gain personal physical and mental growth, and I also want to see the world. I want to feel freedom and still have free time to do stuff though. And I've been looking at the coast guard reserve. Does anyone know if the coast guard reserve will truly fit my goals? Is the coast guard reserve right for me? (also im 17 and graduate high school as class of 2024 if that helps answer my question)
The OIC (Officer in Charge) at my small boat station started in the Reserves then moved to active duty. Based upon what I know, I would start in Active duty when you graduate then move to the Reserves if you want down the road. Seems like Active Duty would be best for you right from the start.

I joined the US Coast Guard as an Auxiliarist and I get to do things with the Active and reserve. It also adds alot to my resume and I have plenty of Contacts

IMO, "action-y" would be BM (you'd also be a boating officer), ME, or AST (rescue swimmer). I would strongly encourage you to contact "Go Coast Guard Tampa Bay". They will answer all your questions and you won't make you feel pressured. Their contact info is in the video description. Make sure to let them know I sent you (Chris Juall - Coast Guard Auxiliary).

Can I be a rescue swimmer Voluntarily? I Work in the medical field and I want to train and learn with the AST A rescue swimmers
@@Nicola.M7 the only way you can work with them through volunteering would be through the CG Auxiliary but even then it would only be through helo ops training. Anything more would require an active duty role and related rating.

I know I'm a late commenter but something has had me confused for a while. I'm not joining the coast guard but my boyfriend is. He going be join when he turns 18 this coming late August. The truth is I have no idea what to get him for his birthday. He said it will be four years in the coast guard and I don't want to get him something with good intentions and find out he can't bring it with him and has to wait for 4 years to use it. I was thinking of maybe one of those projection necklaces where when you hold the small gem to your eye there's a photo inside and maybe a contact book so he can right down all of his family and friends information so he can keep in touch.
If you don't know what a projection necklaces is then you might have better luck just quickly looking it up yourself. I may have explained it wrong.

According to the latest rules I could find online, necklaces can be worn but must be concealed. As long as the necklace is not cumbersome I wouldn't see a problem with you buying it for him. It would be a great reminder of his loved ones. Of course, the final answer lies with the recruiter and his eventual command. That being said, I still think it's fine.

That’s actually one of our 11 missions. Different cutters primary missions vary depending where they’re patrolling.

When you say active duty that means that you live on the boat or on some sort of base if you were a part of another branch ? Also, if I were to serve active duty could I then become a reservist at a later point within that same contract ?
As someone who’s active duty, you’ll either live on base, at a small boat station, on a ship, or in civilian housing (apt, house, etc). If you aren’t on a ship you’ll likely receive BAH (basic allowance for housing). You’ll have to speak with your recruiter about when you can switch to Reserves if you want to. I would assume you’d have to complete your initial contract.

... but the blended retirement plan.....good if less than 20 years is your goal. Not so good if you go over. Still better than most companies, but so many complicated variables.

My state has community college that is basically free and they have low cost to near free tuition for state schools if you're low income such as myself(and if you get lucky). I am considering going that route but have always wanted to go military and haven't had the freedom to do so until recently
I hear so many horror stories of vets being mistreated, not receiving benefits and other such tales of misfortune
How easy is it to study while active duty? I figure I can take the chance to study while enlisted as the navy and air force have programs for online schooling for enlisted but is it truly that easy? Are veteran preferences in hiring truly that good of an advantage?

I don't have a career or family so I don't mind staying for 20 years and retiring at 50 but it doesn't sound appealing to only earn about 22-35000 a year during that time as a 30 year and older man.
How reliable is it to get raises as an e6, if I decide to stay long enough for that rank? I heard someone say that their e6 boss brings home about 8-9k a month. Is that realistic?
If I can do that after 10-15 years then enlisting for 20 years doesn't sound bad at all

I'm not exactly sure. I would recommend you reach out to the recruiting office listed in the video description to see what they say. I was around a Reservist this weekend that began his career in the USCG Reserves as a member of a PSU.

He's considering BM and also would like to be anywhere in the US so long as it's an ocean station that's not any further south of Maryland on the east coast, not on the Gulf Coast and not on any in-land or Great Lakes area. From the info I hear from recent recruits fresh from boot camp, they say it's really up to how well they do/rank in their class. The ones at the top get the best picks. The official word from the Coast Guard however, is there's no guarantee where you'll go. Given the shortage currently, it could be possible. I would definitely ask the recruiter.

The pay should be the same. The big difference is I believe you do more in the CG and it's more like being a firefighter since you usually don't go overseas. Such a great organization!

You know my opinion but it depends what you want to do. I think the CG offers lots of unique benefits.
Talk to both recruiters and pick their brains. See what jobs catch your eye and see which branch has it then compare the two. I’m an EM in the Coast Guard.

Our son barely graduated high school. His then GF, now wife drilled him for the ASVAB. There is a book that will help you. Because of his wife and his hard work, he scored very high. He is still in the CG, over 21 years! Be sure you can pass all the physical requirements before you go to Cape May.
Hey so I’m younger, can’t join yet but wanting in the future. What do you feel would genuinely be best for me? I want to join the military and coast guard seems the best choice, but it also seems like training is harder. What should I train for? Like getting stronger wise. (Sorry if this is dumb)
I would say definitely concentrate on the pushups, sit-ups, and running. Also, be comfortable enough to swim back and forth to each end of a swimming pool a few times. Beyond that, typical weights and stuff but you can also simply do body weight stuff too. The actual test to get in will be pushups, sit-ups, running.

You'll have to ask a recruiter for that one. I'm sure your age is good to join but I'm not exactly sure on it it's young enough to become an officer. I want to say yes but you'll have to double check.

Only if you joined the Reserves it would be highly likely that you stayed in Miami. If you go Active Duty you could end up anywhere in the U.S.

it's not what it was when you were in, my man (assuming you joined quite a while ago). best decision I ever made, but don't make it out to be this fantastical life. we need to give them the pros AND the cons - such as the budget issues, the fact they're offering 2 year contracts because they're so top heavy, etc. etc.
forgive me because i've been drinking, but I'm a disabled CG aviator, and i've spent time on a cutter, so I'll never not fight to make sure you know the realities of service. TBI, back injuries, hearing loss, etc. aren't a joke, nor are they something that isn't a risk. some of the best years of my life, but let's make sure we aren't hiding anything. (also, auxillary can't do aviation, either)
I’m sorry that you had some bad experiences with the CG. It’s not perfect for sure but of all the CG veterans I’ve met the overwhelming majority say it was the best and they wish they stayed in longer. All the things you’re suffering from could’ve easily been caused by a civilian job too. Also, the Aux definitely has a robust aviation component called “Aux Air”. I wish you the best.

Ha. I see they improved the look of the working blues. I looked like a custodian back in the early 90's lol. First off military duty is a dedication, no matter what the service. If you can't dedicate yourself to pull 100% for the duration of your enlistment don't bother enlisting anywhere. One of the Coast Guards biggest missions is saving lives. SAR missions and the like. Law enforcement is another. You have to be at the top of your game to do these things as in any service you have to know your job and pull your weight. I met to many people that slipped past the recruiting process, to many officers and chiefs that threw their rank in your face. These people are fewer than the good ship mates of course. I guess that could maybe be said about all services?
The Coast Guard is a military service so you will be called upon to do things that obviously are dangerous. I've been in the Atlantic in a hurricane on a 270. Been pinned between a ships hull and MSB when the engine died, tied down helicopters, air refuled helos that are above you. Gave cpr to a drowning victim and hoisted him to a rescue helo. Hoisted a gangrene man from the bow of a 270 because the flight deck was full of migrants we picked up at sea. Trained for amputations, fire, chemical warfare, nuclear warfare and whatever else.
Does that make me special? No, of course not. I'm just pointing out that there is a lot to enlisting in the Coast Guard that people may not think about before joining this or any service.
You have to live up to the motto: You have to go out but you don't have to come back. Because not only your life matters but your shipmates as well.
Overall I liked the Coast Guard. Should of just done my 20+.

Sure, you can still volunteer. You'd have to join the "Auxiliary" and become an official member. Once that's achieved then you can decide what you want to do, do that on the Aux side for experience, and then do it for the Coast Guard if that's a job they are in need of. Boat Crew, Radio Watchstander, Culinary Asst., In port watch stander, and other areas would be the high priority jobs.

Yes,
like all branches, the reserves have a chance in being called upon to help active duty. With us we put out solicitations to give those who want to rather than selecting someone who doesn’t.

In WW2 the CG was used overseas. I believe they also may have been used in Vietnam and the Gulf war but they were primarily PSU/specialty units from what I recall. In the CG your primary mission is to keep our coastlines and waterways safe and rescue boaters. Therefore, it’s highly unlikely you’ll go to war overseas unless you’re in a special unit that you specifically joined.

They were actually doing two year enlistments for a while. I'm not sure if they are still doing them or three years. I would encourage you to reach out to the recruiting office listed in the video description. They'll definitely answer your questions and there's no pressure to join or anything.
what opportunities does the CG have for fixed wing pilots?
Air Station locations. All pilots are officers and the two primary fixed wing aircraft are the C-130H and the HC-144. There may also be smaller jets but I'm not sure if they still fly those. In order to become a Coast Guard pilot you must be an officer. If you are already a pilot you can join through the Direct Commission Aviation Program. If you don't, you must first attend officer candidate school. If you're in college you could consider the "CSPI" program and enter flight school through the Wilkes Flight Initiative. Flight training is held at Naval Flight School in Pensacola, FL.

Coast guard is not the best service. I did 8 years in the coast guard and i experienced the WORST TOXIC LEADERSHIPS ever inmagined. As a Coast Guard veteran you'll get absolutely no support whats so ever. Now im basically homeless live off unemployment for years.
My friends joined marines, army, and navy for 6 years and their branch helped them transition into civilian life with secured jobs while coast guard toss me out like trash. I reach out to coast guard several times for support and they literally blocked me or ignored me. Im a extremely nice guy and hardworking and yet i get no support from Coast Guard. Join any other service but coast guard. Coast Guard has absolutely no comradery.
