    I am glad you chose the i5 for this review. There is a lot of information about the i7 Surface Pro models. The i5 is priced similar to the iPad Pro, so it is a good comparison. Thanks for the review.

      I have an m3 model from a couple of years ago (m3-6Y30 CPU, 4BG RAM). I can use Lightroom on it, but it's super laggy to the point where it is very frustrating to use. I would not recommend it.

    I'm still using my surface pro 4 (i5 8gb 256hd) from last year. I'm actually thinking about upgrading to the pro4 i7 16gb 512hd because it's much cheaper now. I like the new surface pro, but I can't justify spending 2k for a bump in specs.

    • @iHustleLXXXI
      @iHustleLXXXI 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you go with the i7/8GB/256GB memory you don't have to pay $2k. I got mine on sale for $1,299. I originally purchased it for $1,400 something but then I saw it on sale on MS website so I took the tablet back to where I bought it since it was within my 30days and they refunded me the money. It was a few hundred $ cheaper so why not. I just had to drive 45mins away but saving a few hundred bucks was worth the trip. Who wouldn't? But it's definitely cheaper now than it was when they first launched the device.

      The New SP2017 I7/8GB/256GB model is on sales for $1,299. That's the one that I purchased for doing work at home. I'm no digital artist. I came from a line of Apple devices and we all know how thin iPad's are and I wanted something I can process my mortgage loan applications on without having the extra bulk. I was using an iPad mini 4 for note taking and e-mailing but I had to upgrade to a Win device bc the program that I use only works on IE11 and not Safari or Chrome. It's a bit of a pain in the arse that I couldn't use my MBP 13" 2012 model for work but I'm glad I bought this SP bc it's like a 3in 1 device. I can use it as a tablet, laptop, or a desktop bc I have the MS Surface Dock that's connected to two external monitors so when I am home I just plug it into my Surface dock and the two external monitors pop up and sometimes if I have multiple windows open at a time the SP 2017 i7 model does get a little warm which is to be expected bc I usually have about 5 screens up at a time and I need the screens to compare and edit docs. I did not want a bulky laptop. The SP was definitely the right choice. I started out with the i5/4GB and it worked well but I wanted to future proof the laptop a little and I wanted a little more speed. Now my SP has replaced my MBP 13" in all aspects. I don't like the fact that you can't use the messanger app like you can on a Apple laptop but hey, everything else is great! When I'm home, I have 3 screens to use. Th SP monitor, and my 2 cheap 23" Acer SA230's. I got them at Best Buy for about $100/monitor with warranty so it was a good buy. Now I can work from home and no have any problems. I like to go all out so I bought the Surface Keyboard, the Surface Arch Mouse, the MS Surface Dock which was a necessity and the Surface Pen which I use on occasions. I also have the Alcantra keyboard but it's easier to type on the Surface Keyboard bc it has the 28 numbers keys. I type a lot of number and using the row of numbers on the top of keyboards without the 28 number keys sucks and slows me down quite a bit. I've been using my SP 2017 for 3 months now and not once have I heard the fan come on. It's so quite you wouldn't even know that it's there. It is truly an all in one device and I choose it to replace my MBP bc Windows can do so much more than an Apple OS. I couldn't use an iPad to do my work at home. I couldn't even get it connected to two minotrs and I have the 12.9" iPad Pro which now I'm only using for movies, youtube and some light web browsing. On the SP, you can do just about anything you want that you can do on a regular laptop. I usually have some kind of buyers remorse with the tech that I buy but not when it comes to the SP. It has worked perfectly for me. Well, not completely perfect bc it did need to be restarted a few times bc it was lagging and freezing on me but that's to be expected with the amount of work I do on this device. I love it.

    You know that it's the power draw of the heavier-duty CPU that causes both the battery drain and the fan spin-up, right? (The fan spinning is a symptom of what is draining your battery, not the actual thing draining it)

    You recommended the i7 without even knowing what it can do. I would say that you picked the wrong model for what you wanted to do with this machine. The difference between the quad core and dual core isn't just something you can guess at. You need to have concrete benchmarks, or actually use that particular machine if you want to educate someone on something. The i7 model is recommended for use with CAD programs, while the i5's are not. The i7 bumps up your graphics module capability as well as the processor capabilities.
    That being said, I actually own the i7 SP4 as well as the new Surface Pro with the same configuration. I have never had a problem with lag on most applications. Photoshop runs on a faster single core better than a slower multiple core as a rule, so picking the quad core over the dual core isn't a better plan, for the most part. I am really impressed on what this little machine can do in PS and LR.
    The difference between the i7 and the i5 is fairly substantial, and I chose the i7 to give the machine a boost in the graphics capabilities as the Iris graphics chip is more powerful than the i5's HD Graphics chip. It is well known that graphics editing is not forgiving, and you need to have a fast processor and a good graphics chip to get the best performance.

      just curious, did you go with the 8gb or 16gb Surface Pro??

    • @nunya7027
      @nunya7027 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went with the 8GB just because the bump up to 16GB at the time of purchase forced me to upgrade the SSD to 512GB. The cost was like $600 more and I found that to be far too much to be worth it. I have never had a problem with the current configuration.

    Hey! Thanks for the information. I am a photographer and transitioned from my beefy desktop to the Surface Pro 6, 16gb earlier this year. Surprisingly...it is great. If I am shooting BIF I can easily have 500 images within a few minutes. Using either Bridge or Olympus Workspace , I can quickly rate all the images and trash the unwanted ones...without any hiccups. Whether I am editing in PS, LR, ACR or DXO this Pro 6 is flawless....so far.

    • @Kyouran

      Is the SP6 still working well for you? My current computer is not running my adobe programs very well and looking to get something different.

    • @billr4283
      @billr4283 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Kyouran Yes, Trinity, it is working great. Plus, if any hiccups occur you will have very good Microsoft support that comes with the computer and / or if you get the Office package. If you're running an older PS or LR you may find that they don't play well with the up-dated system...therefore, I got the Adobe Creative (PS, LR, Bridge, etc.)

    Great video, I just ordered mine and going to try out. Currently using MacBook Pro but have only been using it about a year and I love it. However, I was a Windows user first and want to try editing with the portability of the surface and with the stylus. I have a Wacom and not very found of it bc I prefer to be able to edit right on the image. Your video encouraged me to try this 2-in-1one. Thank you!

    Light usage of Photoshop and apps like touch-retouch. The battery drains faster or you can put the surface on low performance and it might then lag a bit.

    • @Giulizo
      @Giulizo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the surface is more complex because there are many more applications running on it.
      But the iPad Pro is also very good. But it depends on which operating system you prefer.
      But I think that for illustrators the iPad is perhaps even more common.

  • @joteroar
    @joteroar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mmm, so...you have all the options but...just some of them are usable?? 🙄 typical windows...I mean, for me, if there is a lag of half a second between the pen and the painting for making selections or applying adjustments, this ist not really useful, mostly if it’s so when it’s still new...
    So...good that you’ve done this review. I was thinking on buying one to use it with Capture One but I didn‘t trust it is powerful enough and it seems like I was right. And I don‘t want a bigger thing with fans, and weight and so on...
    Shit, now I reaally need a mobile C1! Why haven‘t they still done that, why?!! 😭

    As I am interested in this device and maybe the HP Spectre 360 how is lightroom and photoshop use with the pen? I would be thinking of getting an i7 model for the surface pro. I currently use my imac for editing but at times I would like the option to use a touch device to edit my photos better. Currently I end up doing some work on the imac then switching to my iPad pro for the other detail edits. So was thinking that this device would be the one to save the time spent currently.

      You can multitask with a i7/8GB/256GB model. I could multitask on an i5/4GB/128GB model too, it was just slower and it did freeze on me a few times bc in my line of work, I have to have multiple screens open at the same time and it usually uses a lot of memory but after I upgraded to the i7/8GB model, all my problems went away. I can do just about anything on this tablet/laptop and I love the Alcantra type cover keyboard.
