    Traveling with my new smaller iPad Pro from my kids is great. Weight constraints, having the pencil and ease of use with my drawing apps is so . It's great great to see what's out there with your videos..

    About your CS6 scaling problem, this should work:
    Right click on photoshop icon > properties> compatibility > Change for all users Check: Override High DPI Scaling Behavior AND drop down to be determined by SYSTEM (not application which is the default)
    This should also work on other programms.

    Excellent review.
    I've owned every Surface Pro since the original.
    This latest model is the pinnacle as to what a 2-in-1 device can offer.
    Outside of a larger display and a USBC port I can't think of how MS could significantly improve this device with regards to hardware.

    It's a very attractive device. 5:05 The most impressive thing about this video is having Chrome, Photoshop, and Illustrator running at once, and be able to run anything, complete freedom. Ipad Pro can only dream of that, even in 2018 and spending almost twice the money.

    Hi, Teoh. In Photoshop CC you can adjust the UI resolution for Hires monitors.
    To access the scaling feature in CC 2015, select Preferences>User Interface and set the UI scaling pop-up to "200%" for HiRes displays.
    But not in Photoshop CS6, I think.

    Great review. I still have the SP3, which is complicated by a broken hinge (unforced) and the i7, which constantly throttles when not in the cooling/sketch stand I use. I now know a great deal more about such devices, thanks to reviews like this, by real artists. Are you tempted by the dial?

    • @teohyc

    Curious, if you were taking a trip and had to choose either this product or an iPad Pro with Apple Pencil, which would you choose? (easy for me to choose my iPad Pro). Thank you, Teoh! Always a thorough review! Cheers! :)

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      +M.D. Campbell If it is a holiday trip, I’ll bring the iPad. If it is a work trip, the Surface Pro definitely. I could edit large numbers of photos, upload files easily, write on my blog, and if I’m at a pinch, I can even edit videos. When it comes to doing work, desktop apps still save more time than tablet apps. Of course I will have to bring my keyboard and mouse too. The new Files app in iOS has improved file management slightly, but it is still nowhere as functional as a desktop file system, or the Android file system.

    • @darrenalbertson-digitaldus6227
      @darrenalbertson-digitaldus6227 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a tired argument as it depends on what you are doing. As he mentioned in the video, the UIs of the desktop versions are not touch environment optimized for intensive work on such a small working surface, and something Adobe needs to rectify as their software is only as good as it is capable of being used proficiently with such a small UI, which IMO is not adequate at all. As a professional creative I would never do any serious, time intensive work on such a small device be it an iPad Pro or Surface Pro (excepting illustration where Procreate has exceptional capability) and Adobe needs to take a cue from developers who are taking advantage of the iPad Pro's power and developing more robust and UI friendly mobile apps to exploit it.
      Otherwise, anything I would want to do in such a small working space I can do more than adequately with iOS apps like Affinity Photo, Paintstorm, Procreate, etc. ... anything else I'm heading to my desktop or a larger monitor extension as he mentioned.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great reply! Thank you, Darren Albertson! One great use I've found for my iPad Pro is the Astropad app, which (if you're unfamiliar) allows me to use the iPad Pro with the Pencil as an input device - much like a Wacom - to use with my Mac desktop, so I basically can draw, edit, etc. in any Mac app including Adobe CC 2018, iMovie, Garageband, etc. using the Pencil, which is great. The app is limited and could use some enhancements (like making it fit to the screen I'm working on), but for the work I do, it's ideal. I also use my iPad Pro as a light table. I made a video on that, if interested! Cheers and thank you, again! :)

    Thanks for the detail review Teoh! I am a MSP user, but sometimes I wonder if life would be better with such a small and light device! :) Regarding all the software you use - have you tried out Leonardo? It's like a stripped down version of photoshop, very light and nimble. It's my go-to sketching app these days. It has an infinite canvas like mischief, but is raster, not vector. Definitely worth a look.

    nice review teoh. I am waiting for this review because of my curiosity. hmm so wacom mobile studio pro or surface pro better in your opinion?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your use is primarily Photoshop, Corel or any apps with pressure sensitive brushes, the Wacom is better. That's not to say that Surface Pro is not good, it's just that the Wacom is slightly more accurate, and the physical shortcut buttons on the sides are very useful. Battery life of this Surface Pro is much than the Wacom's 4 hours.

      I'm still using it. Still holding up well. Two things to note, there is slight misalignment when you have both hands touching the sides while drawing. You can Google and see what others are saying. The second is the auto brightness occasionally flickers. It's a software issue that I have not figured out how to solve. Google that too.

    Second hand unit already? Lucky you. I find everything compelling about the surface, except for the price.... the i5 - 8Gb - 256Gb model is well over $1600 here (excluding pen) and as you say that one is the best option, if it was priced more reasonably in Europe.

    Worst laptop_surface pro 4:I am a student and uses surface pro 4. Just recently the screen of my laptop started flickering and now the screen is totally unusable. I need to connect to an external display to read texts without the flickering screen.
    It just started few months back, I did everything Microsoft tech guys asked including hard reset..still the problem persists...and i dont have a warranty anymore
    The customer service are now suggesting replacement- ohh yeah., its gonna cost 450Euros..
    Microsoft...u guys made the laptop without much R&D...please own your mistakes..thats what a good company do (if you dont remember).. hope that surface line up doesn't end up like surface phones
    Otherwise you will loose your customers...We are the ones giving reviews..( i have already reviewed many places the same way)...Remember-Samsung still has their name even though they pulled out their note 7.
    "In a survey of 90,000 tablet and laptop owners, Consumer Reports found that roughly 25 percent of Surface users have encountered “problems by the end of the second year of ownership.” Those problems include freezing, unexpected shutdowns, and touchscreen response issues."( courtesy THE VERGE)..
    Ohh yeah I would include screen flickering to this list..

    I have personnaly a problem with the 2017 Pen...
    The previsualization on the screen when the pen isn't touching it is few milimeters away from where it actualy draws when I'm touching it, and that's very annoying, as I can't do such things as precise lineart or even a clean sketch

      +Kimi Synth I'm not sure what you mean. The cursor should be directly beneath the tip. Any misalignment means there is some problem, either with software or hardware. If you can bring your pen and try on other Surface products, you can see if it is a problem with your pen.

      Kimi Synth This might seem like a dumb/obvious suggestion, but just in case - have you gone into the pen settings and re-calibrated it? To where you have to touch the four corners of the screen a few times? It could be you had your hand a certain way when you originally calibrated it, causing it to be off.

Now in both the cases the file becomes heavy especially while doing photo bashing for concept art so my question is whether it can handle those heavy files smoothly? Still waiting for the Samsung Galaxy book (10 and 12 inches), another windows tablet. Its released in America, but still hasn't reached the shores of Singapore (no idea why). It has better connectivity like USB type c and the screen is much better. With the added advantage of having the pen and keyboard shipped with the device. Something to look forward to. I hope.

    In PS CS6 you can only make the UI text bigger, but that may not make much of a difference in such a high res display. That's not Microsoft's fault, though, nor a problem related to this tablet in particular.

      +allluckyseven The CS6 user interface can be made bigger, but they will appear pixelated. And the graphic file will also be pixelated, and there is no way to check and confirm the sharpness of the file.

    Hi Teoh, Thanks for such a nice review!
    I am looking for a tab which helps me taking better notes.
    Is Samsung tab S3 better than Surface Pro 2017 with respect to note taking quality ?
    Considering price I prefer Samsung tab S3.
    It will be great help if you can let me know your view on this.
    Additionally it will be very helpful if there is review of tab S3 Vs Surface Pro 2017 with respect to note taking (Similar to one you did for Surface Pro 2017 Vs Ipad Pro).
    Thank you!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's just for taking notes, Tab S3 is much cheaper. But at that price, check out the iPad 2018 with Apple Pencil too, which is also great at taking notes.

      Another reason I prefer Samsung Tab S3 is it's connectivity - USB and micro SD.
      I am not in hurry. I am also planning to wait for Samsung Tab S4 as there are hints that it will be released by September. Any information do you have on this ?
      I have a question. Please help me by answering this.
      When it comes note taking how much do you rate (0 - 100 points) for
      iPad 2018
      iPad Pro
      Samsung Tab S3.

    How does it feel when you draw fast strokes (almost like sketching) on Photoshop, does it lag?

    • @FloraYKim

      Also does notetaking on Surface pro feel almost like note taking on the iPad pro

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With Photoshop, it does not lag much. But the other tablet apps, e.g. Sketchable or Artrage, are slightly more responsive.
      When I'm doing fine detail cross hatching lines, there's a split second before the lines actually follow the pen tip. But actually, this is not very different from the iPad Pro when it comes to sketching really fast.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Note taking on Surface Pro feels slightly different than the iPad Pro because of the tip of the pen. Surface Pen has a softer but firm tip, like a felt tip. Apple Pencil has a hard tip. Both are able to capture handwriting very accurately so there's not going to be any issues when it comes to taking notes.

    Is anyone else experiencing a cursor jump with their Surface Pen in some apps. In my case, my Marquee tools in Clipstudiopaint seem to be snapping away from my cursor whenever the pen isn't perfectly perpendicular to my Surface Pro's drawing surface. I've heard it might be related to the Tilt sensitivity in the new pen. It's quite annoying. Until Microsoft offers a way to switch off the Tilt or Celsys updates CSP, I might need to switch my stylus. Before this Surface Pro, I had been using a Wacom Companion and two smaller Samsung tablets, so I prefer a lighter stylus with more butttons. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    • @teohyc

      8gb RAM is suitable for editing 1080P videos. 16gb for 4K videos. Basically, 1gb RAM for every 1GB in file size. My 4K videos are usually around 4-8GB.
      Surface Pro is not the most appropriate computer to get for video editing. The cooling system is not as good compared to laptops or desktops obviously. And editing videos generate a lot of heat. But if you want a system that you can draw on as well, there's not many options though. The other option is the most expensive Surface Book 2.

The "innovations" simply are still not worth it to a business that already owns licenses for CS6 or in many cases CS5. I know it's the "cool thing" for new designers right out of school, but that's now how things work in business.
