    Can I make a request? Could you just make an hour video of you just noodling on the Rhodes with a slow phaser? No talking, no aim, just noodling. Thanks in advance.

    For studio use: Small Stone. For stage use: Behringer. Can get lost, broken or stolen, doesnt really matter. So both have their place.

    Let me just say, I'm a Van Halen fan through and through, hence my researching the behringer phaser, but man, I had a grin ear to ear throughout the whole video, your playing just struck me in some strange way, absolutely phenomenal job, keep it up!

    I think the Behringer was first. It has a little bit more THD than the small stone. That could be desirable in some circumstances, but the Small Stone sounds a bit cleaner and fuller across the frequencies while still having a LOT of character. Still, the Behringer is very impressive, especially at the price point.

    Thanks for the video, I've watched this one over and over just to listen to you play. That modulated Rhodes sound sure takes me back. Being as budget conscious as I am went with the VP-1, does the job just fine. I splurged on an EHX Ocean's 11 for my main pedal, the one I use the most.

    I know this was a few years ago Moot but I recently thought about adding a phaser and then suddenly there was a ad for the VT-1. I like that revolving globe orb deal you put up there while you had the blind melon test. pretty amusing and possibly had a serious effect on certain individuals. So thanks again and was also going to ask because I noticed that noisy knob right away... is there a contact cleaner with lube that might be safe and yet make that noisy knob somewhat more like the beefy knob? or at least less scratchy? thx

  • @jlindborg1105
    @jlindborg1105 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Now, I actually guessed the right answer before I read your answer.
    What was the give away for me was the more full sound of the Small Stone.
    Somewhere between 100 - 200 Hz.

    • @MacXpert74
      @MacXpert74 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that's what I was hearing too. The Small Stone sound has more "swirl" to it. I also had the feeling that the top-end of the Rhodes sounded a little cleaner through the small stone. The end result sounding just a that more "high-end" and classic with the Small Stone. But considering the price, the Behringer did quite well.

  • @TooSlowTube
    @TooSlowTube 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The Behringer is a metal case. It's definitely one of their better pedals.
    I haven't tried a Small Stone, so thanks for the comparison. It's close enough, for the likes of me.
    The Rhodes sounds great. I'll have to look for a video that features that Wurly being used as something other than a pedal rack :)

    Is your wurly sitting on the Rhodes’ lid without any support underneath? I’m thinking of doing the same, stacking the wurly on top of the Rhodes’ lid without any support but afraid it may warp and ultimately collapse the lid due to weight.

      The thing that people usually look in the vintage version of the small stone is that it is raspier than the nano reedition. I imagine that this Behringer version would appeal to a lot of players who find the nano too clean, especially on guitars (always have to dirty it a bit with an OD to find that raw flavor again).

  • @Fluxwithit
    @Fluxwithit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love unbiased no pretense just straight sound... yeah I think I'll grab the behringer to be my "don't care if it breaks" phaser. I have a EHX miniqtron that's funky as hell (different style pedal) but I don't see em much. I'll have to shoot a video on that.

    Nice! I thought I heard small stone for 1, vintage phaser for 2. 3 & 4 I'm not sure. Nice demo. They definitely sound pretty much identical. vintage phaser sounded like it was driving a little more at one point, but it could've just been where it was at in the sweep compared to the small stone.

  • @paulj0557tonehead
    @paulj0557tonehead 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Smallstone is just tighter and doesn't get washed out in the frequency alteration. The Beringer is probably highly modifiable.
    My favorite phase shifter/ &with vibrato is CRAIG ANDERTON'S ELECTRONIC PROJECTS FOR MUSICIANS ,PROJECT #21 Phase Shifter. I built all but 2 projects in that book ( metranome and 12 note scale tone standard). The SUPER TONE CONTROL, PREAMP, TUBE SOUND FUZZ, and PHASE SHIFTER are the best and totally worth building! No vibrato pedal is as thick, rich, and versatile as the 'Vibrato Switch' on the #21 Phase Shifter...a vibrato with 5 controls! (fyi if you are considering building #21, the now rare CLM6000 opto-isolators can be made using white LED' and an LDR in heat shrink heat tubing...look online to see how. There are five CLM6000's in the unit.

    If you do another one of these videos, I would recommend checking out some of the 6-stage phasers such as the MXR phase 100, EHX Bad Stone, maybe the Roland/warmaudio jet phaser (combo fuzz and phaser that’s really expressive, no demos on keyboards though), I’m sure they would give some interesting results!

  • @phranquepeasant5688
    @phranquepeasant5688 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My take on it is that if even you can't tell the difference, who am I to disagree. And about the build quality, my small stone was broken after a single use, because I had left the audio cable while it was turned off. So, even the small stone isn't that we'll built either. Unfortunately my guarantee period was over when I wanted to listen to it the second time. But my goodness! You can play, man!

    • @mootbooxle
      @mootbooxle  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure why it would be so low output...one of the big downfalls of the Small Stone is that it lowers the volume a bit when engaged (It seems to "load" the signal), but it's not super low as you describe. Have you tried them with AC power?

    Was looking at getting either a used Russian Small Stone or a Behringer VP-1 and honestly, great comparison but I'm no closer to deciding! I'd give the edge to the Small Stone because the Behringer seems ever so slightly muddier, but considering the price difference and that I want to use it with a fairly shrill keyboard the Behringer might actually be the better option for me. I wish my old Crumar Roadrunner had an audio-in... it has a really nice built in Small Stone style phaser.

    • @mootbooxle
      @mootbooxle  ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a Crumar/Univox Compac 2 that had that phaser. Cool sound for sure! I say go for the VP-1, you have nothing to lose at the price point! If it’s not giving you a sound you enjoy, sell it and get the Small Stone! Actually I say skip both and go for a Mu-Tron Phasor (original model) - more expensive but it can handle the loudest input gain without nasty breakup, it doesn’t lower the output volume when engaged, and it can sound like the Small Stone and more. But the VP-1 is a no brainer to start with!

  • @New_Zealand_Music
    @New_Zealand_Music 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What happened to the famous ehx phase shifter hump that you get that was my favourite part seems to have disappeared completely either that or I just can't hear it on your demo I miss my Russian phaser.

  • @gearoftones8585
    @gearoftones8585 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The price is because Behringer has a huge infrastructure and has the ability to make its own components in house. The parts in all analogue pedals actually cost pennies. It's all about labour, efficency and volume. The actual build quality of those two will be comparable.

  • @Twirlyhead
    @Twirlyhead 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My advice on the Behringer stomps is to snap them up before they stop making them as the used price of them actually can go up to considerably higher than when new once they are no longer made. They are still making the VP but several much in demand _copies_ have been and gone and I can only theorise that there may be some patent/copyright shenanigans or such occurring. So, yep: get them cheap while you can.

  • @CurleyJosh

    at around 5 minutes.. what I was hearing was that the electro harmonics was that: more harmonic... and it would pull from the middle to the outside throughout the course of the note. The knockoff was cool in its own way.. it has more distortion and crunch (maybe cause its shit) but it adds character, right? I just like distortion.. however, like i said before the electro has a warmer wider tone with more harmony

  • @Keyboardman88

    Pricewise, one can buy at leas 2 of the Behringer for the price of the Small stone. YOu would also have the flexibility of being to run two for stereo. I've done that in the past and it sound great. Just set one slightly faster than the other and listen to the stereo mix.

      @wigon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool test. I got it right as the Small Stone had a little more headroom on the input and a very very slightly deeper sound. But really the differences are MUCH bigger when later you turned on the color switch on the Small Stone. Then you hear a much bigger frequency range on the Small Stone with a definite difference compared to the Behringer. Still the Behringer is not bad sounding, but I'll stick with the EH Small Stone. Behringer is made in China with a long reputation of cloning competitors. Their lawyers actually threatened to sue me at one point around 2002 because I was spreading on usenet audio engineering forums, a document comparing the circuitry of their Mackie 1202 clone to the original Mackie 1202. They also ripped off DBX and many other companies. So it's not surprising that they're still at it, but just with smarter small changes in (like on that tone switch) in order to avoid lawsuits from the companies whose products they clone.
      That being said, I do use their Behringer Xenyx series of mixers which improved upon the Mackie Onyx designs in some ways with less noise (but not as ruggedly built). Plus they added digital FX and the incredibly useful independent (and good sounding) compression on every channel...which no other mixers in their price range have. They also make a great reference mic called the ECM-8000 that is a killer measurement and omni direction room mic for a low price.

I did use digital reverb on that one (Strymon El Capistan) just because when I compared it to my analog spring reverb, it just improved the sound of everything. The album "Dirt" is even more of the same, but taken to an EXTREME degree. Thank you for listening!

    Honestly, it's hard to explain, but the Small Stone has just a hair more "juicyness" to it compared to the Behringer. They are very close, but I've already got a 90's Small Stone and a new Bad Stone Nano. That's all the phase I'll ever need. And the order was Small Stone, Behringer.

    Build quality ? My 1978 Small stone had a 3.5mm power jack that fed 9V to ground as the plug was pushed in to the socket. Four screws had to be removed to change the 9V battery - resulting in about 90% of Small Stones being held together with gaffer tape...
    It did however sound superb...

    The Behringer doesn't slow down enough on the LFO to provide those really long sweeps.
    Personally, I also like Stevie Wonder's Mu-Tron phaser (I or II ?), as was used on his "Songs In The Key Of Life" album (on the song "Easy Goin' Evening").
    Would be cool if you could get your hands on one, and compare it to the Small Stone...
    Anyway, thanks for the demo/comparison. As for guessing, they're too close, I give up. But then again, my DIY Small Stone clone is also identical. ;o)

      +AlainHubert Cheers for the comment Alain! Guess what ? I actually have got a Mu-Tron Phasor (original version) since I filmed this video and will be demonstrating its lovely sounds pretty soon. Spoiler alert: It completely mops the floor with the Small Stone for most applications! BTW Songs In The Key Of Life is a masterpiece.......

      @@mootbooxle I have a Mutron 1 sitting on my Rhodes directly going into a Visual Studio H2O for for variety. The Mutron is loser than the H2O but it’s wonderful none the less

    The Behringer switches are crap. The big box Behringer pedals are funny because if you open them up there's nothing in there. Just a tiny little miniature circuit board. For the price though, they are not bad.

    I used to have a Small Stone. My second phase shifter (first one was the Danelectro Pepperoni). Small Stone was better build quality and better sounding. Haven't tried the Behringer yet, but I imagine I would enjoy it more for its features than the Electro-Harmonix model.

    There’s no modern module that can make the same sound of your Rodes, but without emulating or sample base. More like the new VC-340 that is a clone of the mid 70’s one?

    I don't know which is which and don't really care, but the second is dirtier and exhibits more distortion. Again, I don't know if the distortion is coming from the instrument or the Phaser.

    Small Stone has it for me. It has more ‘shimmer’ and a sweeter and more immersive sound. Behringer is good, but not great...

    Actually theres not much difference in the sound, I think nobody could really hear any difference. Then I have to say the Behringer is a bargain. How long it will last...thats impossible to say if there aint no reference, it might be working twice as long as the Small Stone. Anyway, fantastic playing and nice comparison.

    If you own a vintage small stone, keep it... and buy the B for when you gig. If you don't own A vintage Small Stone. Don't pay a bunch for one. Buy the B and don't look back. I own a studio and we have both... nobody has EVER said... "woah... wait a minute... is that an affordable pedal? I can tell by listening." Not ever. If anything, the little bit more sweep and control makes the B more tweakable when it needs to be.. and 2 of the 3 "real" S.S.'s are CLEANER than the B... so just don't even worry . Ps. soon enough these metal box B's will cost 3x's what you can get them for now.

    Paid $15 for my Maestro Phase Shifter in Hollywood in 1984. Everyone wanted digital crap all of a sudden. Btw in 1984 gear was simply 'old' not vintage. No foo foo.
