  • In this video I compare a Version 1 Small Stone Phaser to a Version 3 Small Stone Phaser. The version 1 is from 1974-1976 and the version 3 is from 1979-1982.
    Gear:
1974-1976 Electro Harmonix Small Stone V1
1979-1982 Electro Harmonix Small Stone V3
    1965 fender Show man Amp
    1968 Marshall 1982A
    2008 Gibson Les Paul R9

The older one's a bit more lofi sounding. The 80s one has more clarity, but I do like how the top end sounds of the original. I actually bought the original because of an older video you did, and I love that thing. My guitar teacher told me he had the 80s version and gave it to a friend, and he regretted it, so last Christmas, I got up the money to buy him another off Reverb. He was floored. Love my guitar teacher, been taking lessons with him for years now

The problem back then you couldn't get anybody to fix the pedals if they broke. I would bring it to the old electrician guy and he would say what is that. So I would say nevermind and walk out. I would bring in a distortion pedal and he would say why do you want distortion. And again I would say nevermind.

You couldn't even bring it back to the store because they didn't have anybody that could fix them either. The store guy would ask you did you drop it. It's a stompbox. I would say nevermind.

The original Small Stone was designed by David Cockerell. He also designed the classic EMS Synthi and VC3S synthesizers. I believe the original Small Stone was part of the Hi Fli effects unit that one sees David Gilmour using in the studio scenes of Live in Pompeii. Mike Matthews basically had Cockerell design a pedal version. Cockerell also designed the original Electric Mistress and 16 Second Digital Delay. I own both of these versions of the Small Stone, but slightly prefer the V3. Both are more interesting than a MXR Phase 90. Another cool OTA based phase shifter are the various models made by Ross(especially the purple colored Phaser Distortion-killer pedal).

Version 3 seems to have a smoother, rounder transition between phase "changes", whilst I perceive more of a fade out of sorts in the 1st version. Both very likable and sonorous. Thanks, Johan. Saudações do Brasil.

I used to own one of these, bought new around 1978, and I now realise that it was version 2. From what I remember, it was closer to version 3 than to version 1. It was a little noisy, and the higher end of the Rate control was all but unusable. Still a nice pedal, and a classic sound.

I think the V1 actually creates a new instrument when you play through it. It sounds a little filtered even! The V2 is more of the actual effect on the instrument. I totally agree they sound similar for sure but they have a certain difference that makes you able to use these 2 in very different type of ways for your music.

All these boxes had + or - 20 percent component tolerances as well as dying capacitors that are now out of spec…so there is that aspect too. Sometimes you get a lemon as a result.

I have a Small Stone v2. I have only ever used it with a battery. I want to connect it to a power supply on a pedal board. The Electro Harmonix forum says it needs a 9vAC 100mA power supply with positive tip. I currently only have a Mooer 2.0Amp 9v output adapter. I have bought a Truetone 1Spot 3.5mm converter. Can that be plugged into the pedal and connected via daisy chain to the 9vDC supply or will that fry the pedal? Does it still need an AC power. I see the Truetone CS12 powersupply has an 800mA AC out along with all the DC outputs.
I'm clearly not an electrical wizard (good name for a pedal though) however I understand there is a risk and am nervous to plug the pedal into anything. I'm in the UK. Can anyone please advise?
