This was in my playlist and was playing when I was sleeping and it worked into my dream that I was helping my cousin with a concrete repair issue. When you were going over the tools and PPE, it was him reminding me of the things I should have brought to the job and forgot, but would go pick up at home during lunch break. Lol. Funny how dreams work like that. :-)

I just turned 60 and I'm a woman, only I think my brain thinks I'm 20, but I am doing my Foundation, there's a lot of holes in it that I'm repairing and when I'm done repairing the holes, I have to parge it . You got this. Be patient as this takes practice.
-Remember to wet the block surface before applying the parging mix.
-If the mud slides down, the mix is too wet. If the mix has trouble sticking, then the block and/or the mix is too dry.
-Make a small batch at first, and practice on a discreet area of the foundation.
-If its not working out well, scrape it off the block while its still wet and try again.

Best advice I can give is, make sure you clean the block well, wet it and add a bonding agent, and most importantly don't make your mix too wet. If its too wet, it will sag. Let me know if you have any questions. Here to help

@@OldSoulMillennial So my wife and I parged the detached garage about 2 months ago, shortly after my comment, and it seems to be holding up so far. We had a few spots that ending up not sticking on the wall but we chipped them away and patched them. I think it's because it was the first wall and we may have gone a little thin and that wall is blasted with sun all day so it could have cured too quickly despite trying to keep it damp. The other sides went a lot more smoothly without any evident problems. The real test will be how well it holds up against the winter (we live in Southwestern Ontario).
Thanks again so very much for posting this video and for the words of encouragement. I honestly think it would have gone a lot worse without them.

Wow what a crummy job. Thanks for the help. I didn't watch anyone else's. Right from the start, there are so many different concrete products at the store, I would have just chose mortar mix without knowing otherwise. I had to do the walls of my bilco basement door so it didn't have to be pretty. I ended-up just mashing it on there with my hands and slapping it in rather than using the trowels. Looks fine. I should have done better with gloves because my hands are REALLY beat-up now. For this project I used 1, 95# bag of Portland and only used half. Bought 3 bags of sand and used 2. The smaller thing of the adhesive was just enough for me. It was really unpleasant doing my basement entry since it's a confined space and also it's tough to use water without making a big mess so I couldn't really clean-up as I went along. Thanks again.

In my opinion, this is a good mix for the north east, as I live here. You can go in stages, but the then it becomes a bit more difficult to blend the old with the new. I recommend finishing one side of the foundation at a time.

I'm wondering. I have small areas on one foundation wall of my house that need filling in and smoothing out. The foundation wall is only about 8 inches high before the stucco starts. I got some ready-mix concrete patch which says the surface must be dry and doesn't say anything about keeping it wet afterwards for a few days like the portland cement videos say to do. The Home Depot guy said this would work for what I'm doing. Would anyone agree with that? I don't want to have to mix that portland cement up. Will it help if I also brush on some concrete adhesive to the wall prior to putting on the ready mix concrete patch? I really want to do this myself. I had a guy who does this for a living do a row of my back wall and he didn't wet it down and I don't know if he used adhesive in his portland cement mix and he didn't say to keep it wet for a few days after, but it didn't last but 2 or 3 yrs.

It all depends. You will have to play around and decide what works and looks best for you. When its hot and dry out, concrete cures quickly, so you will want to sponge it fairly soon. When its damp and cloudy, you have more time to work with it. Sometimes ill be parging the corner of a window or the foundation and I sponge it immediately to shape the corner. Its a bit of an art and there are some general rules to follow, but everyone has their own way.

Removing old paint may be very difficult. You may try a wire brush, a wire wheel, or if you're careful, a surface grinder. I do not recommend paint stripping chemicals as they may prevent proper adhesion. Just do the best you can to remove what you can. 1/2" gaps between blocks, I would suggest a type s motar in most cases. Be sure not to add too much water. @@sdoken I see only benefits to parging. It protects your block work and adds cosmetic value. Block is porous and so is the parging. If you have a water issue on the outside of the house, you should really address that first. Make sure water is pitched away from the house, make sure you have gutters and the down spouts send water away from the house. If you have a serious water problem, and you start only using waterproofing on the block, that hydraulic pressure underground will build and bow that block wall.

@@OldSoulMillennial thank you. ok I will take a look at this. A few clarifications: My gutters were only installed recently so perhaps the damage was done on the blocks before the gutters and there is a good chance I do not have a serious water issue anymore but I just wanted to be proactive. We also do not have a wall underground since we have no basement but I will still take a look.
Assuming I do not have a serious water issue, would it be okay to put dry lok on the wall before parging it like you show in this video? Or putting dry lok onto the parge itself to make the parge last longer?

The guy said he would chip off the old loose stuff, anchor galvanized mesh with concrete nails and then apply the parging over the mesh. Never said anything about wetting the walls or using a bonding agent. Said the parging material he uses has fiber in it. no talk of keeping it wet, or covering with water. I have health problems. • @OldSoulMillennial

You will always have a sanded texture, but its needed. If you used strait portland cement, it would be very hard, and would crack. Sand helps to allow the cement to expand and contract very gradually with minimal cracking.

But why do people parge? Why not just seal and paint ?

    • @OldSoulMillennial
      @OldSoulMillennial  3 ปีที่แล้ว

People parge to protect block foundations from deterioration. It's easy to parge new cement onto a block wall because it adheres properly. As the parging fails over many years, you can scrape off the loose stuff, and apply new cement. There is no bonding issues. Easy to repair.
Paint greatly complicates things. A painted block wall will not allow new cement to properly stick/ adhere. This makes future repairs more difficult and weaker due to lack of proper adhesion.
      Thats my basic interpretation anyway.
