WOW THAT INFORMATION ABOUT THE MORTAR FALLING OUT WAS WORTH WATCHING THIS VIDEO...30 YEARS IN CONSTRUCTION AND I DID NOT KNOW THAT!!!!! THANKS!!!
Perfect, I have a cottage with a 2' crawlspace, I enclosed it with plywood and a tyvek air barrier, this will give it that basement look I wanted, great idea using felt paper first to shed water.
Thank you so much. And for answering everyone’s questions. You are SO HELPFUL!!
Bless you!
Nicely done my man East Coast Rules ! I almost hired a guy, till I saw this. I had the wrong mesh at 1st and knew nothing of the black felt.
Thank you
Thanks for the lathe reversal knowledge.. most people would never know ~
That mesh secret is key. Thanks for sharing
In north east India locals make their houses with this technique. As this place is earthquake prone, this technique keep them out of danger. Their houses are made on wooden pillars and frames. Floors are made with wooden planks.
Thanks! I need to do something similar to this on a smaller scale, on the fly. Very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
What mortar did you use? is there any different types?
Adding a layer of tile on that would be Hella dope
Thanks for sharing and I appreciate your reply given us the type of mortar mix.
Always nice to see a fellow masons techniques, keep up the great work!
Same to you....thank you much
Amazing video 👏🏾
@@rapgamecastro4028 thank you so glad this helped.
Good video! I learned something new about the wire mesh thanks.
Glad to of helped
The Bob Ross of construction I love it
Definitely need to see what you did to get to that point.
Excellent tutorial Sir, I'm going to go and do exactly what you did in this video. Thank you again.
HI, YOUR VIDEO IS NOT BORING, I FIND IT VERY INTERESTING, I HAVE A QUESTION, CAN I DO THIS TO MY BASEMENT WALL, AND WHAT KIND OF WIRER MESH IS IT, THANK YOU
Awesome !! Working on a job like that now , but indoor fireplace . Never knew that about the mesh !! Very good , nice explaining detail for specifics
Very good instructional video.
Very good explanation. I just wish you showed how you applied the mesh. 👍👍👍
Galvanized panhead roofer when applying over a wood substrate, we're over masonry or block attached with masonry fastener
Dam! Great training video.
Nice job the work and explaining. I like seeing this. Thank you!
This works better then quick drying concrete using bonding agents.
Just what I was searching for! Wish I could buy you a burger! Thank you!
Glad to offer help ty
Seems the man needs a beer with that burger! :D
Great video! Very helpful. What mortar mix would you recommend for this? I’m going to Ramset the mesh against an existing concrete foundation then use the mortar over that as you have shown.
I use masons mix. Pre. Bagged hd. Type s. Green and white bag....heavy with lime
Thx bud for the video.👍👍
Is there a reason you didn't apply a scratch coat?
what materials are you using for your mortar, what proportions?
@@J0yB0y31 premix type s Masons mix mortar. This has a high concentration of lime. Excellent bag mix
a couple of questions: what is the mesh that you overlay on the joints and did you use roofing nails to secure the mesh sheet to the backer? thanks for a useful video
@@a-mpmccarthy6782 galvanized diamond mesh, 2'x8' sheets. Aluminum pan head roofer lock the mesh to the backer. Although you could use coated ribbed nails with a retainer disc as well. Either or works fine. I like aluminum, no potential for rust
@@Chrdiy thank you for such a quick response. I wasn’t clear enough with my first question. Early on you mention a mesh to cover the joints where the 2x8 sheets meet to prevent cracks at the joints. Is that a separate product or are you overlapping the 2x8 sheets by a few inches?
@@a-mpmccarthy6782 oh sorry, simply overlap. No additional product required
@@Chrdiy Outstanding!
Thanks for the video
What product are you using for the parging mortar? Thanks!!
Galvanized diamond mesh, over 30 weight black felt, I like to use type s Mason's motor. Very high lime concentrate. Extremely strong extremely strong and last
Thank you so much!
so is the smooth side of the wire going on the outside or inside?
Actually the wire is is twisted two ways. When you install the wire you want the lower part of the v to the diamond to be cuffed so it's slants inward so when the motor is placed on the mesh it cups and holds the mortar agai and prevents the mortar and prevents the mortar and prevents the mortar and prevents the mortar from falling off the mesh
Thank you for the training
If you are going over an old crumbling foundation wall, what would I use to attach the wire mesh? Or would I not even use it? Also what’s the best type of mortar?
Either way you'll use a wire but you would have to attach the wire if it's a fieldstone style stack wall with mortar you would have to use a 3in stainless steel or aluminum nail with a flare panhead to secure the wire. Nailing between the joints. If it's a block style crumbling wall then you would use a Hilti style gun with a ring fastener
Any kind of concrete specific
We use Mason's mix type s mortar. . Hd 80 lb bag . Heavy with lime where gloves.
spray foam the inside with architectural closed cell foam. boom it would be insulated very well
Thanks for the info, much appreciated.
Thank you. And your very welcome
Great video, but I need the nail pattern and size of nails and or do u nail in the field
No set pattern use your judgment you want to keep corners and lap joints down and yes BB gun down the field area
Would chicken wire & mixed concrete(or what you used) be another option for a circle retaining wall around a fire pit?
No other option. 1/4 diamond galvanized mesh. Comes as 27"x96" lengths.
What can I use if I can't find metal stucco lath?
The wire mesh is a veey common product at box store or concrete retail store. Straight masonry application would crack overtime and separate and fall. So you must use mesh for this application
Ray, do you have extruded polyvinyl foam insulation?
Just use carbon fiber stucco lath.
I find that if you don’t have a trowel, in a pinch, using a picture frame is a very suitable alternative.
Now parge the lath.
Parge the lath
Thanks so much for this video! What kind of backer board should i use? Also, is it only connected to the ground or screwed to the house? Do you worry about ground expansion in winter? Sorry just can't find these answers anywhere
So in this video the backer board was only used to create a bump out frame so that the foundation pushes past the exterior wall. If you're going over straight block and you're not dumping out the wall we're making it thicker you can attach your wire directly to the block
@@Chrdiy thanks for the reply!
Good video I'm going to do the exact same skirting to my house I got last year, do you use the same morter as you would for brick laying?
I use type s masons mix. High lime content. Handle with gloves
If i'm doing this over an existing brick wall that's crumbling in areas, would you place the wire mesh directly against the brick so it can adhere in the cracks/crevices or would you still use the fabric behind it?
So what you should be doing is applying the mesh directly onto the brick. They sure when you use fasteners such as a Hilti gun, that you're not too close to the edge to blow apart the brick. So typically when you're wrapping brick such as a fireplace or something similar you usually dry form your wire for your corners we're pre cut before you start fasting. The idea is to get it secured so it hugs The Brick and doesn't belly outward. Any place where the wire pulls away from the brick you'll want to secure with a fastener. Show the biggest rule here is also to make sure that the wire mesh caps in word on the lower portion of each Diamond so that it retains the mortar as it's being applied. In short wire first then two coats of mortar
Do you have to use mesh? I seen a couple videos where they're just doing a stucco finish on cinder block and didn't use mesh... I was trying to figure out if I should try it out
Most builders will use mortar to put a two coat porch over cinder block that's usually okay if there's two coats the first coat is a base coat and once applied score grid line across it using a nail or a tool. That will assist in holding the secondary coat as a bond. First coach called a scratch coat second to the finish code. In this video the wood frame attached to lower portion of the building then protected by plywood then felt. So there was a definitive need to hang wire mesh with two coats of masonry over top of it as the masonry is attached and connected to the mesh wire itself and not the surface of the plywood. So in a roundabout way to answer your question to copart on cinder block surface is okay with a first coat being a scratch coat. Just make sure you use a good quality masonry mix such as Masons mix which has a high concentrate of lime.
thanks
Thanks
Use a hawk. Don't work out of a mud box on the ground. Work smarter not harder.
I can't get premixed stone veneer mortar mix in my local stores - do you have a good recipe for creating an equivalent - I have read so many variations that I don't know who to trust.
Right...too many opinion. That's the problem with TH-cam. Type s masons mix. Get it at big box store
Good information
So glad this helped you out. Tgank for comments
I have a customer that has parging on a insulated foundation. Its cracked and crumbling, some spots you can see the foam insulation. She wants this redone. Could I just appl felt paper right over the old stuff and then put the wire mess on top?
Probably not that sounds like dryvit over foam. Difference product altogether
@@Chrdiy Thanks for the reply. What would you recommend to fix this issue? It goes all the way around the house. Some areas are crack and pieces falling off. One side of the house covered in shade has mold and moss over it. Is that a patch to this or is this a tear out and redo type of job?
When do you need to use wire mesh opposed to just mortar? For instance I’m wanting to put a stone veneer on the exterior base of my home, it’s raw exposed cinder block. Do I need to use wire mesh?
Pinning mesh will prevent loosening of the veneer due to elimates. Also yoy will be binding mortar to the block and mesh at the same time. If you look at block foundations that have just a pass of mortar over top of it 9 out of 10 times you'll see cracking and flaking and chipping away in chunks. It's never a good idea to parge directly over smooth block as it will not last it will separate over time. A solid firm pin Foundation is the key to longevity
I screened the front of a cement pourch and few spots some big chunks fell out so it has a gap behind the sceen... should i fill the gap with something first?
The mesh should be pinned snuggly against the block wall to avoid any gapping between mesh wire and wall, "if I understood correctly"?
What’s the best way to attach the mesh directly to brick?
Small 1 inch flute masonry nail with gal washer
Complete Home Remodeling Diy where do you get the fasteners? Need stainless or galvanized and not sold in box stores
Is there anything different I have to do if I want to do this over an extruded foam foundation?
I would just make sure you have a fast and felt barrier and long enough anchors to secure the wire to the face of the foam and the felt so it doesn't pull off
@@Chrdiy Thank you. I am planning on doing this tomorrow. I just finished a faux stone facing on part of my foundation and it looks so much better. I am anxious to see the rest done. I think this finish will look awesome next to it.
@@simcynjohns8777 no problem.....your welcome....best luck with your project

How do you mix the stucco
Usung type s maons mortar. Loose not runny
Type S mortar? So you don’t mix it with equal parts Portland cement and sand
@@robertosifuentes8022 no this was a small project. I use profess grade type s masons mix. Premix bag. Very strong mix. Where gloves the lime burns
I have one mason that will do it this way.(amish man) Then, I have another mason that wants to remove the paint since our foundation was previously painted, and proceed with stone.
Both Mason's say their way is the right way to do it, AND.... if it was my house this is how I would do it. Both ways are different though? Got any comments for me?
Yes. Without wire masonry coating will pull and crack. With wire it becomes almost stand alone veneer although pinned to the the building. Remember everything expands and contracts.
@@Chrdiy
Thank you very much. I deeply appreciate your answer.
@@Chrdiy what nails would you use to attach the wire mesh to the foundation wall that has paint on it?
What i want to do is place this wire mesh on dirt and cover it. Keeping ground hogs from digging holes around the house also in the yard. Then place pavements. Is this a good idea?
I wouldn't recommend it. If you're doing pavers there's a system for that which requires 4 in of crush to be compacted for a bed and then an inch of sand and then the paver
Wire mesh and mortar is not recommended for that application
@@Chrdiy ok but will still stop the ground hogs from getting in? I'm desperate!
I'm going to be doing a parging job soon and I was just wondering if you need something to back up the wire or will it stick without it
Depends on the surface your covering. Wood veneer, block, brick??
@@Chrdiy its wire covering and opening under concrete steps
When you say wooden ply. You mean frame it with 2x4s then add plywood to the framing then black felt?
For this particular job yes because it had to be packed out to match the above siding grade which was packed out with 1 by 3 furring over top of the block wall
Boxed framed with 1x3 fir attachedto the block
@@Chrdiy how did you secure the bottom of the framing? Just wedged it?
All fir members are attached to the block via hilti gun. Verticals at 24" oc. The horizontal members to box. All wood 1/2" off the grade
@@Chrdiy but on the bottom is nothing but dirt. Nothing to nail to.
sealer on the top will always leak..., matter of time...
All along the watchtower
hand me my patching trowel
Do I detect a newfie accent?
Sorry. New jersey
Good vid... but really you didn't show shhit 🤷🏽. No before and after? And where is the veneer? Show the stones atleast. Give us a real tip where we can learn from. Take care🔥💪🏽
Two coat masonry veneer. No stone being used here
Sucks
