Been going through this with my old house. Rapidset mortar mix worked great for areas the size of the palm of your hand. I had square feet that needed to be done around a window so my construction neighbor came over to help. He used Mapecem quick patch for flooring, yes flooring. He showed me how to work it into place. He did good work. But I needed something that was slower setting and for vertical surfaces. I'm just a rookie. So I am trying my hand with the rest of the larger repairs with Sakrete surface bonding cement. So far so good.
What a beautiful job you've done. I was about to repair some old cracks on my foundation wall this afternoon. Your video is direct to the point and contains all the information that I need. Thank you so much sir Don.
Using a fibered stucco mix will help prevent a return of the crack. A little added lime will also provide a bit of flexibility as well as spread a bit easier. A large construction/masons sponge or a damp sponge float would make the float finish and feather edge much easier and faster. A little stiffer mix will also help prevent future cracking. On balance though, not a bad DIY patch.
Thanks, this video was informative, but I also got a kick out of watching you go back-and-forth adding water, then, mixture, then water, then mixture, etc, trying to get it just right… I felt like I was watching a video of myself working, ‘cause I could really relate. God forbid I should ever just read the ratio off of the bag, then doing the math to tell me the exact amounts (trial & error is much more interesting) LoL.
Nicely done Don, alot of the things you did were similar to Rendering or mixing Tile adhesive, I have used a similar additive for the concrete for my shower
From Google: Parging covers any existing cracks on the walls and adds an extra layer, increasing the strength of your walls and their structural integrity. A parge coat will also prevent water from freezing in the cracks and holes, which is a common cause of damage.
You dont need the adhesive because the parging mix should already have some in it. also the parging mix is not the best option, making it yourself would be the absolute best option! You dont have to keep wetting it for 3 days. Also that will keep coming off the wall because of all the compromised spots under the brick. Unless you redid the entire wall of course. Next time if you make a stiffer mix , one 1/4 inch coat would be sufficient. If you're happy with that for your home 👍 . Better attempt than most!
I have a few questions. What do mean, make it yourself? Isn’t it just portland/sand/bonding agent mixed? Why is making it yourself better. I only ask because i have to do some on my house and i would prefer it outlasts me. TH-cam videos are great, but often the most valuable info comes in the comments.
In my case, I was worried mostly about the big area that had fallen off. This stuff is strictly cosmetic, so if you're worried about other areas, go to town! I did go back afterwards and apply additional material along the ground level...you can probably see it in the later views.
looks like thats the top of the foundaiton where that top crack is. even if they redid it, it will prbo re crack again. should have stopped at that spot then go over it
Hi Don! Don't worry about every "king pin" who tarnish your video. I am a handy man on the construction, and you are not too bad for your first time. What i realy love my friend, is your smooth talking : ) You're not deserve all this hate : ( I can see that you are able to do almost everything on your house-Does everyone can say the same? I'm sure they don't. So go see another amateur video guys if your to fency for this one...
Did you not listen this isn't his first time. It's a real life experience that can make you better at what you think you know when people who actually know how to do this type of work can give you the tips to make your job better.. if you can't take constructive criticism for your flaws then you'll never be better you'll just think you know it all
Prime example why everyone shouldn't make tutorial videos. If you know anything about cement work, plastering and mixing then its clear to see he doesnt really know what hes doing. A basic diy-er and thats fine...however...he should be following someones video who knows what they are doing instead of making videos trying to teach someone else.
@@phucyutoob6477 Love your handle but the video clearly shows that this guy has never mixed cement or mortar before and the tools he used and the finish that resulted are also telling of his lack of experience. So all in all I would have to agree that this isn’t the video to watch.
Wait, Did he just say "That's not called a trowel, and laughed? But, it is a trowel. Its a finishing trowel. Its a brand new finishing trowel that has never even been used. WTF? Im not going to waste my time.
This is one of two videos that gave me the confidence to make a similar fix at our place. thanks for a great, informative video!

Very clear and useful. Tank you. Appreciate the calm voice
Im happy somebody is making videos about this . The previous owner of my house did a horrible job and its all falling off.
Thanks for sharing Don! I like that you used the sponge to blend it in nicely

I don't know why he left the top area undone, it looks loose to me 🤔
Final outcome looked great.
Thanks!
Thank you for taking the time to create and post.

Good tips! I moved recently so I'll probably never know if it cracks or fails!
what about the crack at the top

That's me trying to mix small quantities of plaster of paris for drywall repair. Always end up with more than I need.
@@martinliehs2513 It's entirely appropriate to have too much, rather than too little - joint compound is cheap.
Thanks Don great video and easy to follow.
I'm the first to like this in 2 years.

Thanks, HTG! Yes, all the same principles! Your video was better made!
Great advice; thanks! 🇨🇦

I know that voice anywhere! who knew the drone guy was such a handy guy!
Lol. Yep, I do stuff on the side of my drone side hustle.
Good video man!!
HomeRenovation TV... keep going, you could be as big as him
Lol..."if it's worth doing, it's worth filming!"
My area does not carry parking mix, what other product can I use?
Rapidset Mortar Mix
My area doesn't carry parging either. I'm not sure about using rapidset mortar mix. I'm still doing research.
@@bobbyb7127 Actually, the Cement All product from Rapid Set would work great for this.
Rapidset CementAll has finer grain than Mortar mix, and is stronger.
@@bobbyb7127
You can use sand and Portland cement.
Was that purely for aesthetics or does it serve a practical purpose? Like would that exposed concrete deteriorate or cause a leak inside?

Where can you purchase this parging mix?
I bought mine at Home Depot.
Lowe's 🙂
@@catrashoo Thanks! This is Lowe's in the United States?

How would you do it? What products?
He also ignored the foundation crack
Mix in clean bucket , bonder aT least 3 inches onto wall of patched area each side all way around
For a thin coat use a cement brush, Much easier. Wait a little longer before your sponge.
So what about fixing what is at the ground level? Is that necessary? I see it’s on either side of that big patch you fixed.
In my case, I was worried mostly about the big area that had fallen off. This stuff is strictly cosmetic, so if you're worried about other areas, go to town! I did go back afterwards and apply additional material along the ground level...you can probably see it in the later views.
You should have cut 2" around the patch ,nice and square and then apply
God bless you...I can't stop laughing...
the parging failure was caused by the crack in your foundation . The crack is small but is the cause
That structural foundation crack will be back parging crack in a year with out fibreglass mesh if you live anywhere that has Frost thaw annually.
Not structural.
What about the crack along the top lol the wall needs to be redone completely
