to be honest: the sound is pretty close tho. Lotta mids and stuff. But ur right: They shall add more bass but maybe its just the string tension i dunno
Hi Guys, I hope you enjoyed the video, we had fun! Obviously we had the gear that Andertons stock available to us, and therefore we didn't have the exact gear and pickups the the dudes in slipknot use. We went with what we thought would be a close enough option. Slipknot tune to drop B I believe and we didn't want flappy as hell strings, so we're tuned a bit higher. All in all, this is a close reforestation to a few slipknot tones, on a budget! Hope you enjoy it
Rabea I am sorry to inform you hut Mick plays an ibanez with a signature set of seymour duncan backout emty. And jim is the one only one who uses emg's
Mika Tarkela That would be extremely difficult... lol. No one at andertons could play riffs like Periphery does so I'm not sure how fair a shot it would be. 90% of their sound is their playing technique and style.
THE GUY on the right looks like the bass player for napalm death and the guy on the left looks like a member of coldplay who has side interests in veganism and hippy philosophy. A bad ass team if you ask me.
for kerry king i'd say get some kind of BC Rich if there's none in stock then an ESP and for the amp get the trusty Marshall DSL 40 Combo i've also seen Kerry use a Dunlop Dimebag Darrell Wah pedal
yes I agree. I was mostly posting a path to the sound. There is a rig rundow on Premier Guitars' You Tube Channel. A Low cost entry would likely be a Blackstar and a Tube Screamer is still affordable.
flamingRose100 Yea but there's not really cheap guitars with Blackouts stock equipped. I suppose EMG's are the closest thing you can get on a budget. Obvious thing would be to get a ~400-500€ guitar with good build quality but crappy electronics and put in blackouts yourself.
DividedGuitarist i know but just wanted to give the refrence for anyone who really wants the mick sound and has a few more bucks to spend on the pickups
Jack Ramsey Jim: Jim Root Tele (sig) + Orange Rockerverb; Mick: Jackson Dinky w/ Seymour Duncan blackouts (essent. his sig) + his sig Rivera amp (for further effects idk, I think they axe fx)
Jack Ramsey you got me there, I remember that mick uses an octaviser on one song, so I guess a pog octaviser or something like that, ugh I watched a rig rundown vid not too long ago but I'm not gonna watch it again, look up premier guitar's slipknot rig rundown (with it's 100+ "y'know"s from Jim)
SuperJBrowne True, but you really shouldn't understate the importance of your pickups, especially when we're bringing active shit like EMGs into the equation.
***** He does have a sort of signature bright, chimey, almost but not quite harsh, sightly broken up sound that he uses for pretty much everything from fast funky strumming to heavy single note riffs. I think your best bet is a bridge humbucker through a JCM-ish amp with the volume high and the gain just starting to break up, with the mids and treble fairly high and the bass fairly low.
Yesidoplaytheguitar Check out the Guitar Gurus category the Lessons section of UltimateGuitar! There's a lesson that looks at his playing style if you want to look at that.
+DiatonicVids Definitely! The core of Matts tone has always been his 1964 Voc AC. Something like a DSL40, with a Matt sig (killer guitars! Though a muscular tele would fit the bill too.) would be doable for the £1000 mark. To really nail it scaled down, maybe a Vox VR, Marshall or similar. A Fuzz factory if you want to nail the crazy fuzz from Plug in Baby etc. But a marshall-y amp with a tube screamer slamming it will get you closer to that Stockholm Syndrome like sound, which was I "think" a Diezel VH4 (or a Diezel something on channel 3!). Though obviously that all racks up cost wise, just suggestions :)
Yeah. I mean, I'm loving the series so far, but for this they really missed the spot. I get that they want to make videos that people would see but come on, ta least pick bands that have a sound you enjoy.
Well, it's mainly because, for whatever reason, they lowered the gain way too much to where it sounded more like a super crunch. If they've heard Slipknot before, I don't understand why they would lower the gain or play in drop C.
Slylar 123 This! Although Mastodon have an endless amount of tones that I'd love to emulate, especially since their 2 guitarists have completely different rigs.
Really good stuff guys. man, you could enter the riff syncopation olympics and win gold! Would love an episode on how to sound like Rammstein without breaking the bank
I like that you are actually playing long sections of the tunes in these, so I can compare, cause subconsciously, you know what your brain is expecting to hear
+Anthony Vincent That was exactly what I was thinking. Buying heads that sound right is all well and good, but without speaker cabinets you are not going to make much noise. And the speaker cabinets are going to shoot you over your 1500 pound mark.
WAGS 72 First, I have been in many gigging bands and in the best run of shows, only about 75% of the places have p.a. systems (I didn't say I was in hugely successful bands), unless they are well established venues. Even then, to have a 'good' sound man is another issue entirely. That's 25 percent of the time just going "oh well" and leaving? Second, the sound from the cabinet and specific guitar speaker, not only greatly affects the necessary e.q. of the amp, it also, in many instances, defines the sound of the guitar player. I am not at all an amp snob or a guitar snob, but the speaker itself can be crazy important to getting the sound you want. Third, not only do direct outputs sound bad with out a great deal of time E.Q.-ing the amp, most amps do not have a decent direct out if they have one at all (there are so many more things to mention on this topic so I will just end there). Additionally, if you show up at a gig without a cab and expect the venue to carry you... do not expect to be asked back... Do not expect to get much practicing done either... Don't expect to find a band either. It appears to me that this series of videos is designed to show new or younger musicians what to look at buying if they have a specific sound they are hoping to achieve, and focuses a great deal on equipment that will make no difference at all if you don't have a speaker cabinet. It makes no sense to me to be worried about active or passive pickups, or body woods and bridge types and not be concerned about what speaker and cabinet you are playing through.
Can I just say, you guys kick major ass. I've watched several of these and have learned so much. Spent a few hundred on pedals since I met you guys, but it's cool. My Cry Baby Wah changed my life forever and I got it after watching one of your vids. Thanks for all the info.
Andrew Stace True, in my country 1500 GBP means 4-5 months of work, but i guess this kind of videos are made for UK, promoting the Andertons store. Good stuff though, i`m enjoying this series :)
Andrew Stace I used to think the same, but considering you get an entire giggable rig for 1500 pounds, when some Les Pauls would cost the same or more, it kind of evens out. 1500 pounds definitely isn't cheap, but its still within reach.
Andrew Stace Considering they're getting a guitar, amp, and sometimes pedals for 500+ pounds less than the price of a Les Paul Standard, I think it's fair to say it's affordable.
Andrew Stace I have to agree with Andrew and Kyle - the budget we've been working to is by no means top end, but doesn't represent the cheapest gear either. We've tried to aim for great gear that gives us a decent sound for a fair price :-)
Metal Zone distortion, Drop D Tuning, A kind of scooped mids, but not too much for rhythm with a good amount of lows, and a healthy amount of mids w/Neck Pickup for leads. And EMG pickups, preferably a Schecter with an 81/85 set will do the job quite well. A slight touch of reverb for the leads won't hurt either And for solos and riffs, use chromatics where ever you can. Hope this helps!
Everything there is pretty accurate. Only thing wrong with it is Syn and Zacky both use Seymour Duncans. Zacky uses JBs and Syn uses an invader in the bridge and sustainiac in the neck however he used to have the invader set.
Bladezy Bru Duncan SSL-1 loaded strat (Squier 60's Classic Vibe?) through a marshall, maybe Vintage Modern or even a Blackstar amp would get you close with the ISP closer to 10. If u want the gnarly distorted tones go for a Boss turbo distortion and you'd get a way with a Dimebag wah as a replacement for his Ibanez Wah and an MXR Phase 90 for some swirl. Done!
That would be epic. I'm pretty sure Pete uses a mark IV for all of the live shows, and he used to be a PRS artist which could be expensive. If you went PRS the mike mushok baritone would probably be the only option
Alastair Tilley that's completely untrue. He blended a JCM800 with his Rivera KR7 for .5 It's too boomy for a live situation but he doesn't hate the brand
Watching this video 1 hour after ordering the Ibanez RGIR20, the flyod rose version of the guitar they're playing here Im really glad. I wanted this walnut finish but they only have the black with white binding in my country.
Derp Derpson he kept using them for a bit then he tried the blackouts and loved them more and then asked them to tweak them because most pickups and amps aren't really voiced for drop tunings and the string gauges he uses so his signature rig is made to handle the drop tunings and string gauges
The marshall DSL15 has a combo version, but the Jim Root does not and orange cabs can be pricey. I got a 2x12 for $360 to go with my Dark Terror, which was $650...
1 important question, both Jim and Mick play different amps, why does it sound exactly the same on left and right chanel when i listen to their records ?
+lolondd Maybe in the studio they produce it like this. Or they didn't use amps. Nowadays more and more go directly into the DAW and emulate/model it. Go to Line6 Site and watch some POD-videos.
+Brock Walls Yeah only Psychosocial, Devil In I, Sarcastrophe, Heretic Anthem, My Plague and a bunch more are in drop A. So yeah 1 song is close enough I guess.
Etienne Pluess I actually googled it, it's just those 5, maybe some on MFKR. 5 out of how many songs? Like 50 or 60. Over 40 are in B Standard or Drop B.
BMG: $800 Vox VT40+ x2: $500 Trebel booster: $150 Total: $1450 or approx. 1000 GBP So unless you bought used, I'd like to know how you only spent 600 GBP.
3:50 Ive alwas wondered, is that an actual amp or something that plugs into and amp? I myself am not as fluent with guitar tech, tho ive played for years, but I just wanted to know, what the heck are those?
Kory Ladd they only play I'd like that just to give you an idea of who there trying to sound like but it dose bug me that they ay in the wrong tuning they played in B standard instead od Drop A
leave your wah on all the time and get insanely good at the pentatonic scale and positions and play really aggressive tbh zakk is one of my favorites though :)
Honest question here, could you achieve a similar sound with a computer and a guitar amp/effects program? Edit: for playing at home, maybe it wouldn't work for live performances. I'm an amateur keep in mind.
Thanks for the video guys. Rabea, Mick hasn't used EMG's since '08 when he switched to Duncan Blackouts. Shortly thereafter he got his own custom EMTY Blackouts. The gain on your Marshall was a bit too low for the 'Knot sound of tight lows with loads of saturation. The Orange is tailor made for Jim so it has SlipKnot tone oozing out of its valves and he uses an EMG loaded Tele so that was pretty spot on apart from the slightly higher tuning. All in all though, good choice of gear that won't break the bank yet sounds very much like the 'Knot. Good job :)
Ezio Auditore Yip, I know. He plays straight up Rockerverbs on stage but made the signature as a lower cost alternative to his fans. He'd probably use the signature #4 if it pushed 100w... cool thing is, he requested Orange to take the exact same preamp section in his Rockerverb and load it into the Dark Terror's EL84 power section plus a full 3 band EQ as opposed to the shape/tone knobs on the regular and Dark Terrors...
Wilsh Likes Ramen Yes, Those are Jim's signature guitars. There might be other signature series fenders with emg pickups as well, but they don't make any standard guitars with emgs
Mick Thomson uses his signature Seymour Duncan Blackouts instead of EMG's. So for that I'd recommend the Jackson pro-series Monarkh which is a great guitar. That guitar comes with the original Blackouts instead of the Mick Thomson signature ones but they still sound great, and the guitar costs less than a grand. His Signature Blackouts are sold separately but that would mean spending more money. I live in the USA and I've never been to Anderton's and I don't know if they carry that guitar or those signature Blackouts, but you get my point.
if youre gunna play duality or the devil in i... play it in the right tuning... drop b and drop a.. and learn what pickups the guitarist use before you go off buying cute little guitars
I have a Washburn RX12 and MARSHALL MG30CFX, I haven't bought any other guitar or amp since I started and it's pretty budget-ish (together cca. 350-400 bucks) and I dare to say that it sounds more like Slipknot than what I heard here...maybe it's more about how you play it
So who's for Slipknot by busting?
Rabea Massaad fuck yeah, I'd love to see some riffs from the first two albums in there, absolutely definitely needs to happen.
That's cool! But you know what would be cooler! Sounds like Opeth!
anyway, great vid like always guys!
Rabea Massaad also would like maybe a sound like Muse By busting please.
+Steamboat Willie I agree 100%
Rabea Massaad That would be awesome! I would love to hear some riffs from their other albums! Thanks in advance!
it sounds waaay too light
Well I don't think they're in the same tuning as slipknot so
Maybe they detuned the guitars without changing the strings?
i think its the missing bass-guitar in that riff
to be honest: the sound is pretty close tho. Lotta mids and stuff. But ur right: They shall add more bass but maybe its just the string tension i dunno
tone needs to be muddier. sludge. djent without being djent.
Hi Guys,
I hope you enjoyed the video, we had fun!
Hope you enjoy it
Why not use thicker string gages to compensate for the lower tuning
Robbie M. Whole lotta fuckin' around given the guitars have to go back onto the racks after filming.
mick actually uses his signature Seymour Duncan blackouts
***** they've got some drop A stuff also, like psychosocial
Rabea I am sorry to inform you hut Mick plays an ibanez with a signature set of seymour duncan backout emty. And jim is the one only one who uses emg's
I believe Jim plays the octaves in the chorus of duality :)
+marley joubert You sir are correct
yup
Lmao I was gonna say the same thing sound good though
I came to the comments just to check if I was right about that. Thank you ;)
Actually that Ibanez baritone would be perfect. They play drop A and B, so it would be a lot more accurate.
John Moore Drop B or B flat ?? im trippen
John Moore they play drop c and b actually. no drop a nowadays
Lol what? They play Drop B (B-F#-B-E-G#-C#) and Drop A (A-E-A-D-G-B) exclusively
ShadowOfDeath24 They've only ever used Drop C in MFKR... for their 5 studio albums, they're all drop B or A
John Moore Drop A is A E A D F# B
Why not just go with the Squire version of Jim Root's Telecaster?
Nick Whitman
Ok
Apparently according to reviews the squire version is a lot better made for some reason
+mikey ash I really friggin want one!!
+GavinFockensbass Because they specifically said they weren't going to buy signatures.
+Luke Davies But.... they did. And what money did they have left to buy the cabs with? ....Mmmmm... me thinks those rigs are over budget
Mick Thompson used Seymour Duncan in fact he has sig. Blackouts
Yup
Yeah, I thought it's Seymour Duncan, not EMG
Not when he recorded the riffs they're covering here.
Yes he did lol The Gray chapter was when he was already using seymour's.
Yeon Ji Sung he has his signature blackouts in all of his MTM guitars, including the guitars he recorded the gray chapter with.
Sounds nothing like slipknot. love this series but way more gain and way more bottom end!
It's because they're not in the correct tuning
Mixing and mastering is a wonderful thing. Tuning helps too...
Kaleb Morrow also helps if they play the riffs right
ion 53 also there is the gain issue needs more, but obviously your also right
slipknot uses more mids and they scoop the highs
step 1 downtune.
step 2 have 9 other guys simultaneously playing with you
step 3 have a few sets of empty oil drums around.
they're beer kegs not oil drums
ye they be kegs
Step 4 success
*7 other guys, there are 9 guys in the band, not 11
Step 5 get the rich
The guitar tone in this sounded almost too muddy. Mick and Jim have surprisingly "clean" distorted tone
1:46 "No, my mom doesn't like Slipknot" lol
they dont sound like slipknot at all....
And slipknot doesn't like you
yeah Nick
They have different tunings
yes they do, they sound exactly like slipknot
They're playing in drop c, not drop b
Sound like periphery ?
Mika Tarkela This could turn out pretty funny.
Mika Tarkela That would be extremely difficult... lol. No one at andertons could play riffs like Periphery does so I'm not sure how fair a shot it would be. 90% of their sound is their playing technique and style.
SteveOTheMan16 You doubt Rabea?
I bet Rabea could do it.
Mika Tarkela Axe fx, tight noise gate, 13 string with a .104 gauge on the low Q. (im kidding I love periphery)
THE GUY on the right looks like the bass player for napalm death and the guy on the left looks like a member of coldplay who has side interests in veganism and hippy philosophy. A bad ass team if you ask me.
Hahaha!
+GoodEyesight3000 relevance to anything globally?
Best video Andertons has ever done. I'm not even a big slip knot fan
Sound Like Slayer Without Busting the Bank???
yes
for kerry king i'd say get some kind of BC Rich if there's none in stock then an ESP
and for the amp get the trusty Marshall DSL 40 Combo
i've also seen Kerry use a Dunlop Dimebag Darrell Wah pedal
Tube Screamer in a JCM800. All there is to it.
Cometely indeed.
yes I agree. I was mostly posting a path to the sound. There is a rig rundow on Premier Guitars' You Tube Channel.
A Low cost entry would likely be a Blackstar and a Tube Screamer is still affordable.
sound like Korn without busting the bank???
Guillaume Ballestero 7 strings and a big muff lol.
Bump. I would love to see that. Especially because it's an actually affordable sound. The guitar sound in right now is epic.
Guillaume Ballestero lol
Guillaume Ballestero make sure guitars are not in tune but somewhere around drop x and just hammer away
In the intro when they played “The Devil In I” I was thinking they didn’t sound like it...
Then they started playing together 😂
Yeah same not the most accurate but it was good
mick has a sig blackout not emg's
flamingRose100 Yea but there's not really cheap guitars with Blackouts stock equipped. I suppose EMG's are the closest thing you can get on a budget. Obvious thing would be to get a ~400-500€ guitar with good build quality but crappy electronics and put in blackouts yourself.
Todesnuss I think flamingRose100 was correcting them saying that Thomson & Root use EMGs as well.
Todesnuss You can get Schecter with blackouts. Blackjack ATX line or SLS has Blackouts and is the same price as LTD EC 1000
DividedGuitarist
i know but just wanted to give the refrence for anyone who really wants the mick sound and has a few more bucks to spend on the pickups
It would be pointless if they just copied the exact setup
how about a sounds like slipknot by busting the bank
Jack Ramsey Jim: Jim Root Tele (sig) + Orange Rockerverb; Mick: Jackson Dinky w/ Seymour Duncan blackouts (essent. his sig) + his sig Rivera amp (for further effects idk, I think they axe fx)
Michael Jenkins what pedals though my friend what pedals
Jack Ramsey you got me there, I remember that mick uses an octaviser on one song, so I guess a pog octaviser or something like that, ugh I watched a rig rundown vid not too long ago but I'm not gonna watch it again, look up premier guitar's slipknot rig rundown (with it's 100+ "y'know"s from Jim)
Michael Jenkins I watched that too dude but wanted to see what theyd come up with seeing as they dont stock micks rivira
Jack Ramsey yeah mb man
You guys should do an Iron Maiden one.
Tom Park This needs to happen, especially with their new album out soon.
Tom Park Strat and Marshall amp
+Andres Castillo dont forget the duncan set pickguard as well
They did do Iron Maiden
Mick doesnt have emgs...
+Legendary Custer I could have sworn he played Seymour Duncan Blackouts
Dominic Uccelli Yup.
+Dominic Uccelli he does
+Dominic Uccelli he does
He uses his signature Seymour Duncan's I think
I would've gone for the Jim Root Squier tele, would've been able to spend a bit more on the amp.
SuperJBrowne the squier one dosnt have EMGs though, its got some fender knock-off 'EMG style' pickups instead.
BassMuffPie
I know but you can offset that with a higher spec amp and possibly cab which, imo, is more important.
SuperJBrowne True, but you really shouldn't understate the importance of your pickups, especially when we're bringing active shit like EMGs into the equation.
FinderofNemo
Pickups aren't as important as your amp, chuck a Squier Bullet into a Fender Blues and you'd swear it was a MIA Strat.
SuperJBrowne Can confirm, a strat sounds like any other strat through a good amp - amazing.
Sound like Avenged Sevenfold without braking the bank!
Peter Suriner fuck yeah
Yeee
Peter Suriner breaking*
cool vid! could you guys do a sound like Matt Bellamy? he has quite an interesting tone :) Cheers!
Yesidoplaytheguitar Cort signature, Fuzz Face... some kind of amp?
Yesidoplaytheguitar Bare Knuckle Pick-ups make some Muse inspired P90's and HSP90's (the Supermassive & the Stockholm)
Yesidoplaytheguitar Check out the Guitar Gurus category the Lessons section of UltimateGuitar! There's a lesson that looks at his playing style if you want to look at that.

Matt's tone with that gear is killer to my ears!! Great!! Great video again from the guys! Cheers from Brazil!
Nothing close to slipknot.
I agree
Yeah. I mean, I'm loving the series so far, but for this they really missed the spot. I get that they want to make videos that people would see but come on, ta least pick bands that have a sound you enjoy.
Yeah, they've got a pretty cool pair of guitar sounds, but my quite slipknot!
Well, it's mainly because, for whatever reason, they lowered the gain way too much to where it sounded more like a super crunch. If they've heard Slipknot before, I don't understand why they would lower the gain or play in drop C.
And played wrong.
5:00 Jim Root is known for using Phasers and the like. They actually use effects to some extend, not a lot, but they definately do.
Awesome vid.~
How about Sound Like Mastodon next?
Slylar 123 I'd love that
Slylar 123 I thought the exact same thing, that would be an awesome one
Slylar 123 This! Although Mastodon have an endless amount of tones that I'd love to emulate, especially since their 2 guitarists have completely different rigs.
Slylar 123 yes yes yes yes yes
please do this one guys! please please please please pleeeeaaseee!!!
Really good stuff guys. man, you could enter the riff syncopation olympics and win gold! Would love an episode on how to sound like Rammstein without breaking the bank
Good to see Matt actually playing, instead of just sitting there looking awkward 😆
I like that you are actually playing long sections of the tunes in these, so I can compare, cause subconsciously, you know what your brain is expecting to hear
hard to sound like slipknot without buying speaker cabs, though. am I missing something?
+Anthony Vincent Exactly!
+Anthony Vincent That was exactly what I was thinking. Buying heads that sound right is all well and good, but without speaker cabinets you are not going to make much noise. And the speaker cabinets are going to shoot you over your 1500 pound mark.
Since my initial comment I have noticed they do this often and it has ruined this series for me.
+Anthony Vincent if the places that you play gigs at has a PA system then you can plug the head directly into that without a cab.
WAGS 72 First, I have been in many gigging bands and in the best run of shows, only about 75% of the places have p.a. systems (I didn't say I was in hugely successful bands), unless they are well established venues. around 4:25 does someone start playing dumpweed by blink 182 and then lead into dammit? or am I crazy.
Sound like Josh homme (Kyuss and QOTSA)!!
I don't know crap about equipment, I'm just a fan of music but am so glad I found this series. Keep up the great work!
Matt's got the tone nailed. Sounds great.
Can I just say, you guys kick major ass. I've watched several of these and have learned so much. Spent a few hundred on pedals since I met you guys, but it's cool. My Cry Baby Wah changed my life forever and I got it after watching one of your vids. Thanks for all the info.
bad news mick Thompson doesn't use emg he has a signature set of seymour duncan blackouts
and he uses Jackson guitars now
Same as EMGs
The Armoda during volume 3 he was playing a BC Rich warlock with EMG's. They went for the old tone, not the new
"Same as EMGs"
That right there, is what you call naivety...
Well not really
Sweet!
I want a "sound like Rammstein" for christmas :)
I wonder if you ever got your German lessons for Xmas in 2016
Mick has Blackouts not EMG's
xChesterPagex he has both. They still use their old EMG equipped guitars on the albums and live
lol I was about to yell "Mick has a signature Rivera!!" xD but they remembered :) good job, guys!
Sound Like Avenged Sevenfold / Synyster Gates?
We need more of this series
I love the idea that 1500 pounds is considered "without breaking the bank" when that converts to about 3000 Aussie dollars, aha
Andrew Stace True, in my country 1500 GBP means 4-5 months of work, but i guess this kind of videos are made for UK, promoting the Andertons store. Good stuff though, i`m enjoying this series :)

Well you have to remember that normally a rig is put together over time
why didn't you use the jim root squire tele?
Anthony Phillips probably didn't have it
They thought about it and said it would be cheating. Look back to where he was talking about the amp.
These two seem to complement each other rather well.
Will you guys do ax7 soon?
Metal Zone distortion, Drop D Tuning, A kind of scooped mids, but not too much for rhythm with a good amount of lows, and a healthy amount of mids w/Neck Pickup for leads.
And EMG pickups, preferably a Schecter with an 81/85 set will do the job quite well.

Everything there is pretty accurate. Only thing wrong with it is Syn and Zacky both use Seymour Duncans. Zacky uses JBs and Syn uses an invader in the bridge and sustainiac in the neck however he used to have the invader set.
i object i say one rhythm guitar with emgs and one with floyd rose and sustainiac +81 emg
use a high gain amp (el84) marshall/hellwin
SGT.SNEAKY B4ACKSL45H No. Neither of them use EMG. Both of them use Seymour Duncan and I listed the exact pickups.
I know but Duncan invaders or Syn signature Duncan's are nearly impossible to find.
Sound like John Frusciante :D
NS2 compressor, chorus, overdrive (optional), fenders through a Marshall
Bladezy Bru Duncan SSL-1 loaded strat (Squier 60's Classic Vibe?) through a marshall, maybe Vintage Modern or even a Blackstar amp would get you close with the ISP closer to 10. If u want the gnarly distorted tones go for a Boss turbo distortion and you'd get a way with a Dimebag wah as a replacement for his Ibanez Wah and an MXR Phase 90 for some swirl. Done!
Diggin the Baja California shirt as I am in BC. Great concept for guitar videos. Keep up the great and entertaining work.
Please do a sound like Chevelle. They have one of the best Heavy Rock/Metal tones I've ever heard
That would be epic. I'm pretty sure Pete uses a mark IV for all of the live shows, and he used to be a PRS artist which could be expensive. If you went PRS the mike mushok baritone would probably be the only option
SteveOTheMan16 You have shit taste, friend.
crazymiles Care to share why you think so?
SteveOTheMan16
Uh, because Chevelle fucking sucks.
crazymiles Okay, but how come? I want to hear legitimate reasoning behind your statement. lol. Is that too much to ask?
Sounds like the beatles
Patrîck gîll sing through six coffee filters and a pillow for faded vocal effect
your wish is granted
my sides ahaha
Can you guys do "Sounds Like Ghost"
My favorite sounds like yet. Love the editing and your tones actually sounded great for slipknot.
Sound like CKY would be interesting
Reminds me of tony hawks pro skater underground
YES! CKY❤
Hot humbuckers, high gain amp and a boss OC-2. Could be cool, for sure, though.
During "duality" i couldnt keep my eyes off Robea's face xD
It looks like he just ate a ghost pepper
Yeah you've cheated..cabs aren't free..
Most venues have a cab of some kind. That's why they don't include it in the budget.
Derp Derpson I'm at pub level lol...would love equipment you could use..never even played a pub with a house PA..honest..
they show plenty of combos
A sound like Periphery would be awesome!!!
Mick hates Marshall. Quote: "Too boomy". True story.
Alastair Tilley that's completely untrue. He blended a JCM800 with his Rivera KR7 for .5
It's too boomy for a live situation but he doesn't hate the brand
I thought that were his opinion on 6L6 tubes
I dont like marshall for the same reason
I like how Bea played Jim's harmony with Mick's sound instead of having Matt play it with his rig for Duality.
drinking game: take a shot every time someone says To Be Fair
How to get fucked in 11 minutes or less
Watching this video 1 hour after ordering the Ibanez RGIR20, the flyod rose version of the guitar they're playing here Im really glad. I wanted this walnut finish but they only have the black with white binding in my country.
9:55 now that's not very Slipknot sounding
yes it is you wally it's super slipknot sounding
man _ do you know what a JOKE is?
Nice t-shirt, Bea! Grettings from Ensenada, Baja Calornia :)
Aren't Mick's signature models Seymour Duncan loaded?
Yes, he stopped using EMGs after he split from B.C Rich during Subliminal Verses.
Derp Derpson he kept using them for a bit then he tried the blackouts and loved them more and then asked them to tweak them because most pickups and amps aren't really voiced for drop tunings and the string gauges he uses so his signature rig is made to handle the drop tunings and string gauges
where I can buy that Ibanez??? some link?
Wait....have they excluded the money spent on cabs on sound like?
Yup
The marshall DSL15 has a combo version, but the Jim Root does not and orange cabs can be pricey. I got a 2x12 for $360 to go with my Dark Terror, which was $650...
+Oborowatabinost ugh lucky!!!!
+Oborowatabinost I really want a cr120 head with a 2x12 :(
00000 00000 Yea it's a pretty cool rig. I prefer the tubes over solid state, but I bet the cr120 would still sound great!
Sounded great to me. Love these videos. Thanks guys.
unless I am wrong, Mick uses Seymour Duncan Blackouts NOT EMGs........
+Poisonmon you are correct in fact he has a signature set!
I mean he did use emgs from self titled- vol 3
Awesome!! Thanks guys! It is great job!
You should make a Sound like Richard Z Kruspe from Rammstein! I'm sure many people would like to see and hear that
1 important question, both Jim and Mick play different amps, why does it sound exactly the same on left and right chanel when i listen to their records ?
+lolondd Maybe in the studio they produce it like this. Or they didn't use amps. Nowadays more and more go directly into the DAW and emulate/model it. Go to Line6 Site and watch some POD-videos.
sounds like slipknot by busting the bank
Thank you so much for making this, Slipknot is my idol
How to sound like Slipknot 101: Tune a guitar to Drop A that doesn't have a long enough scale to sound right.
Only one song is an A lmao
+Brock Walls Yeah only Psychosocial, Devil In I, Sarcastrophe, Heretic Anthem, My Plague and a bunch more are in drop A. So yeah 1 song is close enough I guess.
Etienne Pluess I actually googled it, it's just those 5, maybe some on MFKR. 5 out of how many songs? Like 50 or 60. Over 40 are in B Standard or Drop B.
I think you guys nailed the sound, not a bad job for a budget build.
Who's bank isn't this going to bust?
***** It's funny, I myself have a Brian May rig that cost me a bit under £600, when their "Sound like Brian May" was just past a grand
It's funny you should say that, because Brian May's actual guitar was made from parts of an old fireplace!
David Byrne Maybe "Sound like Brian May for just your mum to hear in your bedroom," their setups are actually gigable.
My build consists of a BMG, a Fryer treble booster and 2 Vox VT40's. Trust me, it gigs well.
BMG: $800
Vox VT40+ x2: $500
Trebel booster: $150
Total: $1450 or approx. 1000 GBP
So unless you bought used, I'd like to know how you only spent 600 GBP.
3:50 Ive alwas wondered, is that an actual amp or something that plugs into and amp? I myself am not as fluent with guitar tech, tho ive played for years, but I just wanted to know, what the heck are those?
Sound like The black dahlia murder!!!
7:18 what’s that jiggly-high note called?
I don't think you guys are in drop b sounds more like drop d too lite
Matt's always choosing either an expensive guitar or amp.
do a sound like korn without breaking the bank
What would have been the problem with the baritone rg? They play in Drop B and A as far as I know .__:
sounds like celine dion
Best death metal guitarist ever
Love the hair doeeeeessss!!! Thank You!
Sound like Gojira
yessss, you need a clean boost to get good distorted chunky tones. idk why these guys never do that.
That, is not how you play the devil in I.
happy someone heard the mistake besides me
Kory Ladd they only play I'd like that just to give you an idea of who there trying to sound like but it dose bug me that they ay in the wrong tuning they played in B standard instead od Drop A
the intro sounded amazing
Try to make A Sound Like Zakk Wylde
+Ib Petersen YES!!
Play too many pinch harmonics.
Michelle Lehky ik youre probably joking but there's a LOT more to zakk than that
leave your wah on all the time and get insanely good at the pentatonic scale and positions and play really aggressive tbh zakk is one of my favorites though :)
all the gain
Honest question here, could you achieve a similar sound with a computer and a guitar amp/effects program?
Edit: for playing at home, maybe it wouldn't work for live performances. I'm an amateur keep in mind.
Sound like John Mayer?
Good job :)
Just by the way: jim dosent play his Signature amp. He plays a rockerverb mark2 i think.
Really didn't use a Fender for Jim Root?
there are no fenders with emg pickups besides jim signature, which they said they weren't gonna use
There are fenders with EMGs, but they're $1500 USD and that's way over budget
How did you guys play so in sync? How is it possible to play together like that.
Sound like David Gilmour ... ?
I have a Washburn RX12 and MARSHALL MG30CFX, I haven't bought any other guitar or amp since I started and it's pretty budget-ish (together cca. 350-400 bucks) and I dare to say that it sounds more like Slipknot than what I heard here...maybe it's more about how you play it
