2016 Kia soul 35,000 miles on it. I just finished the 10 min drive I couldn’t believe the amount of smoke that was coming from my exhaust I really thought for a few minutes that I ruined everything after driving it hard w a/c running the smoke was gone this car is driving like it brand new again. It’s unbelievable how the dealership maintenance wouldn’t include something so important let alone not even never once mentioned this to me during the years I had a warranty for maintenance. Tomorrow I change the spark plugs, the pcv valve and the oil. Anyone who drives a Kia soul and never spray the inside of the engine my advice to you is run to the auto parts store and buy a can of this spray. Thank you so much for taken the time to show us how easy and how important this is. God Bless you and God Bless America
Holy crap girl!!! Cleaned the throttle body then did the GDI cleaner, let it sit for an hour, then jumped on the hwy! Lots of noise, my girlfriend followed me just in case. Almost was ready to pull over!!! So much noise and smoke!!! But as I hit the next exit and got back on the road it cut loose!! Holy crap I was able to get it to 85!!!!! Pretty easy with no noise!!! Thank you so much for posting this!!!!!!

Hey No I'm just a DIYer that's read up on the car. I believe someone in the comment section did confirm this is the method Kia uses. GDI also does a walk through on this procedure.
This is perhaps one of the best videos on how to do this !! Bravo! I love working on my kia soul and kia sportage turbo. Guys she is legit don't forget to subscribe
Thanks for your videos Mel! My daughter has a 2016 Soul and it's so much easier to point her to one of your videos than try and talk her through maintenance over the phone.
My 2015 Kia Forte LX 1.8 made in Korea proudly displays 450,000 miles on the odometer. I use the Sea Foam valve cleaner every 2 oil changes (synthetic only). God bless us all!
I had this done before on my Kia Soul it was a bit scary but it helped out. Thanks for putting this out there for all of us fellow Kia Soul owners! One thing is I had a check engine light for oxygen sensors and I changed them (I used Denso sensors) and the spark plugs to NGK Ruthenium RX once I did that it's amazing how different my car felt just a heads up. Of course this is after a transmission fluid and oil change as well.
I'm loving your videos. Thank you. I'm good with other cars. My Kia has always intimidated me for some reason. You make it look easy and explain in a way I understand. Thank you for staying on point and not trying to promote stuff.❤ keep it up. I'll be following now. My son named mine Lightening McQueen 😊
What I did was I sprayed on the PCV Valve hose and never had a problem with the idle because when you take the vacuum hose off it actually idles high around 2500 rpm. You should try it one time by spraying on the PCV valve hose. It atomizes the chemical and sprays all over the intake valves. When I drove it after heat soaking it, It was really scary and the smoke took a while to go away. I smoked the whole block and I even stopped because it was pinging so hard that it scared the heck out of me. My wife was quiet and already calculating how much the cost for repairs. LOL But the result was astounding! Got my gas mileage back and the my Kia Rondo got its power back. Has torque on all gears now. Happy with what I did but scary though.
I watched your video and had to get brave and try this. I used a different but similar product (Berryman 2611 Intake Valve and Combustion Chamber Cleaner), followed all the directions on the package. I could already feel the difference on the test drive. I was stopped at a light at a freeway on ramp at about a mile into the drive when I took off in a huge puff of white smoke (I had misfire codes on all cylinders) but . . .the car runs smooth as glass now. It has it's power back. I won't know for a while if I have my mileage back. 2015 Soul +
@@MentorMel This kit came with a hose and fittings that plugged into the intake manifold side of the PCV valve hose. That made it a little easier as I didn't have to remove the air box or intake pipe to do it (just the PCV valve hose). Next time, I'll try the product that you use. My local dealership wants $300 + to do this service.
I think you did a nice job on the video. I have a Honda Earthdreams GDi and use this method. Along with Redline Si-1 fuel system cleaner. I do this on Fridays prior to my scheduled oil change on Saturdays where I add 4 ounces of Gumout Multitune to crankcase and drive for 5 miles to dealership to have oil changed. Go up a grade too, the 0w20 and 5w20 unless using Amsoil or Redline will dilute too soon; if using a basic synthetic oil use 5w30 and kept changing every 4-6k miles.
I have a 2021 Hyundai Venue. I made sure I had extra, extra warranty on it, but I'm still getting the runaround from them! So I got a scanner, so I can clear the miss fire error codes and I think I have the mass air flow sensor located, but I'm still chicken! BUT!!! YOU and YOUR video was the kick in the butt I needed I guess. I'm doing it tomorrow morning, without fail! Thank you! Have you ever thought about being a coach of some sort? You really can get the whole team motivated! WOW! I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight! I want to go go go! LOL
@@MentorMel I did it exactly as the instructions say to do on the can, (with my brother in laws help on the gas pedal) and it threw NO cylinder miss fire codes! So I drove it around for about 50 miles and had the oil changed. NO problems! Now the next time will be a breeze, thanks to you. Take care, and thank you again! 👍🖖
I finally got brave enough and did it today 😂 I was terrified and when that first huge plume of smoke came out everyone and I mean EVERYONE behind me slowed way down thinking my car was about to explode 😂
Hopefully it helps. I recently was having rough idle but did an oil change in quick succession. Changed within 1k and that seems to have helped. Good luck! I'd try cleaning the throttle body too.
Hello there I was watching your videos and I was amazed, I have a 2013 Kia Rio it's been giving me rough idol And poor acceleration, I change Mas air flow sensor , PCV value, and the crankshaft position sensor sensor , And nothing has helped, Question I've never done this you think there's any risk
If you have an gdi engine this should be able to work for your engine. There is a rumor going around that it may cause catalytic converter issues however I haven't experienced that and I've done the intake valve cleaning 3 times. To counter the rumor I run cataclean every season just as a maintenance procedure. Hope this answer leads you into the right direction.
Hello there sorry to bother, I'm doing the valve cleaning right at this moment, Question I just did a oil change like 4 days ago, so I have new oil. you think it's necessary to do another oil change?
That $800.00 charge may well include Walnut Shell blasting which is a proven physical method to clean up your intake ports and intake valves that the chemical process may leave behind.....
Definitely gave me the courage to start the process. However, I’ve seen videos where it says that it will continue to clean for the next week or so. Should I wait a bit for the oil change until its done breaking down the carbon?
I've waited a couple of days then done it. I believe it's the color and particles. Can technically didn't specify how long after so it might be to your discretion.
I would consider no smoke a really good thing. That means you don't have any carbon build-up. I'd stay on doing this regularly to decrease buildup in the future. I'm glad it seemed to help you idle problem.
Thank you so much for all your awesome videos and information! How do you get the reverse cam to work whilst driving?! 😮 ❤ And how much of the can do you recommend running through the intake; the entire can? And then: rev it to 3500, 3 times, and let it sit at 3500 for a minute? Or just let it idle for a minute? I’m going to the store tomorrow, my engines been running like crap and I don’t want to give my local Kia dealer any more $$ 😅
It's no problem! The reverse camera while driving was a function of the head unit I had. I upgraded from that however that was a cool feature wish my new one had it. I use a full can per session. I Rev to 3500 3 times then just let it idle without your foot on the gas. Definitely try this first and you should feel a significant change. Wishing you the best and welcome to the Soul Tribe! ❤️
Gracias Thank you very much for the video, my girlfriend has a 2016 Kia soul and it feels a bit ugly and I think that's it and I will do it in her car. Muchas gracias 👍🏽
@@MentorMel Yes I did and it worked very well thank you but now I'm trying to replace the ilde air control valve and I can't locate it by any chance do you know where it is?
Question should I change the oil, pcv valve and the spark plugs before cleaning the intake. thanks for this video. It’s incredible why wouldn’t dealers ever do this I never even heard of spraying this stuff into the intake.
I would do it after cause it'll be all fresh items you will be putting in your car. The directions for the intake state to change oil after. So I would do those other things too. Yeah it's crazy how bad they want to get money from us. Capitalism.
Think my wife’s Kia does this, it was knocking just like yours and now it has no throttle response, we had to change the cat 6 months ago because it started doing the same actions like it is now. Could the bad clogged cat be a side affect of all this extra carbon you’re talking about it? what would be your recommendation of trying to unclog the cat while it’s on the car or is it not possible on Kia. Definitely will be using your carbon cleaning technique so this clogged cat crap doesn’t happen anymore
It's a possibility however everything has a draw back in life. I hear there is a product called cataclean that you put in your tank and it cleans your cat.
From my research nothing however you can look up some intake cleaners where ppl compare them and check the cat after. I don't have content or tools for a video like that.
From what I've researched the deposits are very minimal to the cat. You can run cat cleaner, oil additives and fuel additives to serve as a cleaner if you are concerned. I personally run gas treatment and oil additives very frequently along with more frequent oil changes. I'll definitely look into a cleaner specifically for the catalytic converter. Thanks for your suggestion.
Hi Mel. I'm going to do the CRC intake cleaning on my 2014 Kia Soul 1.6l manual tomorrow. I have close to 40,000 miles on it. This will be the first time I did the cleaning. How aggressive did you drive after the 1 hour heat soak? I usually shift at 3000rpm to get the best gas mileage, but for this 10 minute, highway speed run to blowout the carbon, I'm wondering if I should rev it up to 4000rpm or higher? Thanks for your channel .
Success!!! I followed your instructions in this great video plus the instructions on the can and successfully performed the intake valve cleaning. These were the steps I took. 1) Ran the car for 10 minutes to warm it up. 2) Removed the air box and rubber hose going to the throttle body 3) Started the car and maintained 2000 rpm 4) Sprayed cleaner into throttle body in 1 second burst, then waited 4 seconds for engine to recover Engine would drop to 1500 rpm then recover to 2000 rpm This process took around 45 minutes so plan accordingly. 5) When can was empty, I allowed the car to return to idle, then revved the engine to 3500 rpm three times 6) Let the car idle for 1 minute 7) Shut off car and let the valves in the engine "heat soak" for 1 hour. 8) Started the car and drove it at highway speeds (55 - 60 mph) for 1/2 hour. One time during the test drive, when I had to get up to speed fast from a stop, I felt a little hesitation and saw a puff of white smoke out the tail pipe, but it cleared up fast. I have a manual and I did not go above 3500 rpm in any gear. I did not hear any knocking and the engine light did not come on at any time. After the cleaning, the idle is very smooth and acceleration is crisp. The car is parked for now until I get the oil changed A Million thanks to Mel for her encouragement to do this very important service to the GDI engine on my Kia Soul.
I would add good quality gas additive to clean spark plugs and fuel injectors just before you do the cleaning. That carbon released off the valves will deposit on the them and can also cause misfires poor performance.
No, throttle body cleaner is solely to clean the butterfly flaps of the throttle body. That solution isn't made to run through the engine of your car. That's where the intake cleaner comes into play. Hope this info helps.
So from the research that I found the maf is located in a different area then behind the throttle body. I could be wrong but reading and doing deductive reasoning led me to that conclusion.
@@MentorMel so after the throttle body? I have a 2010 kia cerato which the MAF sensor is after the throttle body. Just curious if it will cause any damage to the sensor before doing this
I would look at your Vin tag and pull that up online. I'm pretty sure the soul engines are going but I think the Vin tag will tell you for sure. I don't want to give you incorrect information
She's correct that this is a must for adding to your maintenance schedule. But this is PREVENTATIVE maintenance. If you're already experiencing rough running and dirty intake valve issues, this is not a silver bullet that will solve that. This has been proven by many other channels and videos. GDI engines suck.
Amen to that! GDI engines are definitely at the lower end of designs. I've definitely learned a bit on this engine since starting the page. I will say though I enjoy my car but once she goes, idk if I'd get another Soul. Unless it has a Honda engine 😅
@@MentorMel any recommendations on products ? And do you basically use the whole can , reason I ask is I don't think the previous owner ever cleaned the GDI
This helps with engine performance. Changing the pcv valve (check out that video) will help with consumption. I also do an engine flush when I get my oil changed every 5th visit.
@@MentorMel I've already changed a PCV valve and I'm literally burning like a court to a quart and a half of oil every 500 mi or so it's horrible it makes me hate Kia GDI
I have heard these things, 1. The white smoke is not the burnt carbon buildup, it's actually from the CRC being pooled up around the intake as liquid, same thing as when your engine is hydro locked. 2. Tinny/clank sound you hear is not from dislodged carbon chunks on their way out to exhaust, it's actually valve slaps due to the CRC pooled up as liquid around the intake. You get these two symptoms no matter how carefully and slowly you spray the CRC into the intake. So if this myth busting is true, then it means that this CRC treatment comes at a cost with some damage to the engine. Can anyone confirm?
My recommendation is look at crc intake valve videos where people actually test it on the valves vs seafoam. Then look at another video where someone actually looked at the cat before and after. That's what I did to determine if it was worth trying on my car. My MPG have significantly improved since doing the treatments. Again it's up to you but over time your engine will begin to lose performance.

Good video. Think i will do my optima. Where did you get the tool for holding the gas pedal ?
Hey its just a crowbar. I got mine from Lowes but will add a link from Amazon if that'll help.
@MentorMel thank you. I made one out of wood and will move the seat back to engage it. Keep up the good work :)
@RandyFromBBlock thanks!! ❤️
Great job girl!
Thank you!
3:12 Is that engine knocking from the carbon build up coming loose?
Idk what you're referring to
Is there a way to do this without in aerosol cleaner it destroyed my O2 sensors and I'm worried about all that stuff going straight into my cats
I believe the gdi walnut blasting method may work. However, I'm not 100% on that full process but it's a good place to start with researching.
Great video thank you ❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it!!
What happens to the catalytic converter after the trash from the valves ends up across the media inside?
From my research nothing however you can look up some intake cleaners where ppl compare them and check the cat after. I don't have content or tools for a video like that.
Shouldn’t you clean the catalytic converter after too since you’re pushing the carbon through the exhaust system ?
From what I've researched the deposits are very minimal to the cat. You can run cat cleaner, oil additives and fuel additives to serve as a cleaner if you are concerned. I personally run gas treatment and oil additives very frequently along with more frequent oil changes. I'll definitely look into a cleaner specifically for the catalytic converter. Thanks for your suggestion.
@@MentorMel yeah just a general question before i try it out so i know what all i need to get , thanks
I have a 2023 Hyundai Sonata with 19,000 miles no issues yet but do you recommend doing this to mine?
I personally would. Staying on top of carbon buildup will be the thing that helps your car last a long time.
Hey welcome to the channel! I just drove up to 60 mph for the 10 mins. I tried to keep that speed for the duration of time.
@@MentorMel Sounds good. That's what I will do. I don't want to rev the engine too high. I will get the oil changed afterwards. You're the best!
You are very welcome! Share your results and experience so others know what to expect.
Success!!!
I followed your instructions in this great video plus the instructions on the can and successfully performed the intake valve cleaning. These were the steps I took.
1) Ran the car for 10 minutes to warm it up.
2) Removed the air box and rubber hose going to the throttle body
3) Started the car and maintained 2000 rpm
4) Sprayed cleaner into throttle body in 1 second burst, then waited 4 seconds for engine to recover
Engine would drop to 1500 rpm then recover to 2000 rpm
This process took around 45 minutes so plan accordingly.
5) When can was empty, I allowed the car to return to idle, then revved the engine to 3500 rpm three times
6) Let the car idle for 1 minute
7) Shut off car and let the valves in the engine "heat soak" for 1 hour.
The car is parked for now until I get the oil changed
A Million thanks to Mel for her encouragement to do this very important service to the GDI engine on my Kia Soul.
That's awesome!!! I'm so glad you feel the difference. It's scary going through it but after.... 🤌🏾
Good job thanks for the help
Any time!
I would add good quality gas additive to clean spark plugs and fuel injectors just before you do the cleaning. That carbon released off the valves will deposit on the them and can also cause misfires poor performance.
Definitely! I run gas cleaner through my car pretty regularly.
Can throttle plate and intake cleaners also do the same job?
No, throttle body cleaner is solely to clean the butterfly flaps of the throttle body. That solution isn't made to run through the engine of your car. That's where the intake cleaner comes into play. Hope this info helps.
Does the soul have a MAF after the throttle body & before injectors? If so, does it do any damage to the MAF sensor?
So from the research that I found the maf is located in a different area then behind the throttle body. I could be wrong but reading and doing deductive reasoning led me to that conclusion.
@@MentorMel so after the throttle body?
I have a 2010 kia cerato which the MAF sensor is after the throttle body.
Just curious if it will cause any damage to the sensor before doing this
I have a 2013 Kia Soul Eco model, the engine says DOHC, is that the same as GDI? Can I still do this?
My 2013 soul ! And + dies when I accelerate on slow speed mostly turning
Hey that sounds like an alternator issue. I'd take it to a mechanic for a look over.
Subbing up. Thank you
. Alot.
Thank you for joining the fam!
Thank you!
You are very welcome!!
I did in mine and NO SMOKE at all. I guess I'm taking care really good of my Soul. I bought 4 cans and lost a lot of money for nothing.
That's good! Keep on it. Your results are really what we all should be seeing but these are GDI engines
No smoke and 60 dollars is better than the alternative of having to pull manifold.
Did the . Seems to run better . Kia soul 2016. 1.6 . 31mpg
Very good!
So you squirt for a second then wait a second for a minute ? So basically thirty squirts
If you want to quantify it like that. Don't overthink it. Just make sure the car doesn't shut off as you spray it in.
@@MentorMel any recommendations on products ? And do you basically use the whole can , reason I ask is I don't think the previous owner ever cleaned the GDI
Crc or seafoam, I use the entire can. Your car will feel brand new
@@MentorMel going to do this next oil change thank you and very informative video easy and simple for diy'ers
Absolutely!! It's fun learning about cars! Have a great day!
Can this help with oil consumption my Kia burns so much oil
This helps with engine performance. Changing the pcv valve (check out that video) will help with consumption. I also do an engine flush when I get my oil changed every 5th visit.
@@MentorMel I've already changed a PCV valve and I'm literally burning like a court to a quart and a half of oil every 500 mi or so it's horrible it makes me hate Kia GDI
I would do an engine flush with your next oil change. That's what worked for me.
@@MentorMel what engine flush did you use
I just had meineke do it. Not exactly sure.
well played
Thank you.
You're welcome!
I have heard these things,
Catch can?
I don't have one on my vehicle yet. I'm still searching around for decent content for me to figure out the process.
Hi Mel...Anthony Martin /Emergency Mobile Mechanic....Use only 0w-20/0w-30 motor oil/Class 4 syn..and my best fuel treatment/Star Tron Enzyme concentrate..5000 mile oil changes rountine.....Take care.....
Hey Tony! Thanks for the great recommendations I'll definitely give those a try. Wishing you the best! ❤️
👍
Thank you so much for this clip!!!
You're welcome!!
i followed what you did but i wasnt expecting 6 error code popping up after it was done...
0301,0302,0303,0304,0700 and 0430..i drive a 2012 kia soul 4u
Try a cataclean after
@@MentorMel ok thank you..i seem to have a lot more issue since i did that cleaning...engine was very noisy and sluggish.
@@MentorMel i will try that cataclean and see that helps..thanks
