Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak Review - A Monster Hunting Masterpiece

Everything I've seen and heard of Sunbreak balance seems to indicate that the dominant design philosophy is "Fun>Meta". As in - they nerfed and buffed things in ways designed to encourage players to make interesting choices rather than spam one optimal combo until victory using one set that's viable, and added new skills that encourage build diversity.
And I couldn't be happier. I mean, come on! Fast, aggressive Greatsword? Longsword that isn't just helmbreaker spam, and can actually mix things up with something like a Sakura status build? SnS and Lance getting across the board buffs to their combos? Insect Glaive getting a mountain of true s baked in, and a silkbind combo that seems built specifically to encourage aggressively using the buffs as a resource (and switch constantly between air and ground) instead of just making extracts an irritant to worry about every 1.5 minutes? The playstyles you can lean into from patchnotes alone are already things that would have been mocked in base Rise, but in Sunbreak it seems as if you really do get pushed to at least try using the entire weapon moveset and all the skills you can get your hands on.
Even the Palico QoL seems designed specifically to encourage players to play the game the way they want, not the way they feel forced to by onerous RNG and narrow meta. Now that's good shit.

This is SUCH A BETTER review then the IGN one. I just watched that one before this and they got into 0 details about new gameplay mechanics and talked about how it's boring to fight the same monster to many times "7/10"

The changes to endgame is what I'm really excited about. The Rampage endgame of Rise was fun for the first 5 or so times, then I had to grind a particular one repeatedly for Valstrax. The only reason I got to HR100 was because I also unlocked Apex Hunts (with Apex Zinogre being my favorite). From what I've heard, they have removed Rampage all together from Sunbreak, and replaced them with Anomaly Hunts

Having finally beaten the main story boss, in hearing about the anomaly monsters remind me about the apex monster mechanism in 4U.i love Sunbreak so far and can't wait to waste another 600 hours on it just like i did in 4U

I don't know if I could ever put Rise/Sunbreak over World/Iceborne, I love Rise, and maybe it's nostalgia on my part kicking in because World was my first MH, but everything from the monster introductions to the maps to the hunts themselves just seemed a little more of a spectacle and grandiose in World. I will say the actual combat system is far better, though, plus my mains, Insect Glaive and Gunlance really got some love in this game.

I am not sure what system you play on, but playing online the community tends to be very helpful. If you play on Switch, a lot of higher ranked players come in and help you out. But yeah the followers is cool.

I'd say it's better. All the master rank quests (and backroom deals at the argosy) give you items called like "melding honey," "melding pudding," etc that you can use to do tons of melding without using monster parts. On top of that, the backroom deals and Lottery at the store can give you MP Accelerants, which can instantly complete the meld without going on quests.

I still dont know how to feel about Rise and Sunbreak as awhole..... i feel like having the game focused on spamming Silkbinds and questionable weapon balance decision when Iceborne actually had one of the better weapon balance in the series(Even tho Clutch Claw Tenderize and Wall Slamm ruined it) made me feel indifferent.... i also dont really like how clashed the Monster Design both visually and gameplay wise
Not that all of them are bad, i think Goss, Rakna, and Malzeno(Primordial Malzeno aswell) are GREAT Monsters that does not have problems with their designs
Espinas is also a great returner from Frontier even if i do aggre its just a fused hybrid of Rathian, Diablos and Monoblos
And i still prefer 4U story telling over.... whatever 5th Gen story telling is
Both MH World/Iceborne and MH Rise/Sunbreak are PROBLEMATIC MH Games, but if i were to pick which is better i would play Iceborne more

After coming from Iceborne I never looked back. This game takes out all the things I hated from Iceborne and added things I can enjoy! No longer a slog grind fest but actually engaging fun!

TO BE HONEST HERE. I cannot agree this game is a masterpiece. My 1 big reason for that is this is no longer monster hunter, But monster beater. The hunters are far FAR too strong. Also i remember when mounting a monster ACTUALLY MEANT SOMETHING. Maybe its just me but capcom should've kept our feet on the ground. Clutch claw was good in concept until you realize how easily abusable it is. Same goes for the sling thing in rise. Its just too god damn easy. not much fun to me(and many others) at all. i remember when bloodbath diablos was A LIVING NIGHTMARE.(which made it amazing to hunt with friends) but now its an absolute joke in rise that has genuinely put my friends to sleep mid fight. END OF STORY (CAPCOM PLEASE GO HARDER IN THE FUTURE.)

All Monster Hunter games are stand alone (except the Master Rank or G Rank expansion games, which expand their base games, and your save file carries over). So for instance, if you play MH Generations Ultimate, then Sunbreak, you're not going to have extra insight on the story of Sunbreak. Each MH game is very different in their combat details, level and quality of story or lore, etc.
Each MH game is worth playing! But do you have to play old ones to understand the newest ones? Absolutely not.

Question tho about the endgame since you said every weapon could go to R10. What happened after you reach the R 10. I assume people will stop playing after you got a couple of them (assuming you just hunt stuffs 3 times each like Gu tickets(

I don't think so people don't stop playing just because they get the final boss weapon in most monster hunter games, every tear having a rarity 10 just means we're going to see a lot more build diversity and probably a lot more time with people spend setting up builds versus making 12 Nargacuga weapons

Do you think alot of people gonna put more time on the game just to make build and test stuffs after they done with example 3 or 4 builds.
Because alot of people that i know just use 2 or 3 types of weapon at most. Some are only maining 1.
Since there is no rng chase people will think the game is done for them after they finished the build they wanted and lets wait for the TU.

You have hundreds/thousands of hours to go in world and iceborn. Especially if you want to do everything correctly and get some good builds and get set up right. Please do not ignore the mantle, farm quests either as they help out a lot. Don’t ignore most of the side quests that have speech bubbles by them…they DO matter and ARE important rather you think they are or not lol. You will be able to burn through base world because of defender armor and weapons but iceborn will hit you like a truck difficulty wise. So make sure you get all the mantles and farm upgrades that you can before iceborn and in iceborn and there will be further upgrades to your mantles and farm. Also **Farm those decorations** like seriously. (As I said hundreds to thousands of hours lol)
Rise/Sunbreak is just the current thing that is out.

No you haven't. You had to use a wirebug or jump off your Palamute to do it. Now you can just run up the wall without having to do that.

John has it correct previously you'd have to use a wire bug or did the jump animation if you didn't have a wire bug now you just naturally transition straight onto walls making movement more fluid

If you want to do iceborn you have to play through world and similarly if you want to do sunbreak you'll have to play through rise, rise & sunbreak are currently more active than world but either is a great place to start

I still hope World 2 will be eventually a thing eventually for the PS5. As much as I love Rise/Sunbreak, I still prefer the structure and presentation of World/Iceborn. I'm still sad and bummed out about the fact that Rise and Sunbreak didn't simply become additional expansions to world after iceborn instead.

Listen my dude I could have shown off armor pieces from the final boss or palico stuff from the final boss and I didn't because I was being considerate of spoilers, pre-existing monsters are not spoilers. If you haven't fought those monsters before and you're watching content that could potentially include those monsters which have existed in the franchise before and you want to experience them for the first time yourself then you should be avoiding all content of the game. There are a ton of clips of Gore floating around because he is already well known in the franchise and was a previous flagship. I stand by my decision.

You never show final boss stuff because you respect other gamers experience and thats why I was disappointed. I did not use any foul language or harassed you in any way.
