I've been trying very hard to avoid my phone and staying away from anything that is addictive. Some days I accidentally regress backwards, but on the days I stay away from my phone, it's like a breath of fresh air. It's alarming how much we've become over reliant on the dopamine hits. For comfort, convenience, and the shiny objects we've been trained to throw away our dreams, our goals, and just settle for consumerism.
I haven't listened to music in anywhere in public, including on public transport or on walks, for years. I stopped doing it nearly ten years ago because I started becoming very anxious not being aware of my surroundings. Now, I honestly think it's a game changer for me. Sure, it was "boring" at first but I can't remember the last time I felt bored doing it. It makes doing things like going to the gym (something I do without music too) much more mindful and intentional. More recently, when I tried to make an effort to use my phone and social media less, it felt much easier as a result. Honestly I can't recommend taking your headphones off and just trying out the world without Doja Cat in your ears more - though I appreciate it's hard to get started. That said, I don't think I could give up music on flights that are over 2 hours long, that's too far even for me
This is such a great idea, thanks Ellie. Maybe this is why I feel so disconnected from the world sometimes, like I’m living in a dream, it’s the headphones!
This is sooo interesting. I started doing this as well recently and I thought perhaps I was overthinking it, but I just think there something to not having your mind occupied by externalities all the time. It has allowed my brain to think a lot more and come up with creative solutions or even just manage my thoughts when I feel anxious
This is a thing of my Status. Sometimes if i am very low, it is better to keep too much impressions away. Then i can go groceries shopping and come home calm. Without i would be stressed Out and very very tired. So i better stay in my headphone world. On other days it is time to interact more with the world around me and to hear and feel it. Then i get Joy from the Things i See and hear around me. Smiles, the scy, colours,...
I notice from time to time that music can cause more stress or uneasiness in me if I am overstimulated but music is often really nice to have and allows my emotions to feel understood. Maybe not totally giving up music is the right decision. Not listening to music while going on a walk or being on your way to work, and instead making the moments at home where you do play music way more impactfull and fulfilling.
The best advice I got was this "just do it" Sometimes it's challenging just to open my laptop and study or have some work done, but everytime I apply that "just do it" I finish starting things.
10 years ago in my early 20s I went through a horrible year in my life where I "rotted" before it was spoken about. I became very depressed and agoraphobic. I could come to my front door, then I'd get so afraid and anxious that I'd crawl back into my home and try to forget that I was throwing away my education and social life. It was horrible. I don't know how I got through it. I'm glad girls are talking about this online, perhaps they will fare better than I did.
One thing that has worked for me (which falls in the phone fasting category) is taking my dog for a walk immediately after I wake up. So literally, roll out of bed, put shoes on, leash him up, and get outside. It puts space between me and all the "normal" distractions that get in the way of a good morning. I get a good walk in, and then when I am home, the phone doesn't really feel enticing at all. Thankfully my dog is a good sport too because if he didn't want to get up I'd be in trouble 😅
I try to do this too and on the days I do, it makes SUCH a difference to my mood and my focus, it's amazing how something so simple can totally change the trajectory of your day!
TH-cam has changed my life, and I have to say that being a TH-camr is almost like running a business. You always need to give your viewers what they want. You can't become complacent at any moment. At the end of the day, toughest part is definitely starting your channel and growing it up to the point you become successful (and honestly if I haven't used a lot of famester, I would have quit a long time ago. It was a proper game-changer for me, and once you become successful it is a great tool to control algorithm).

Congrats on your success.
I accidentally did this when my phone got so short on storage, so I deleted snapchat and instagram. I love yt though, but this content is way more helpful than scrolling. Like asmr & docs! Also what helped me is to be disgusted at the greedy companies who just want all my time, data to sell for profit and sell me personalised ads, they want all of your time! Fight for your own time and life
i used opal to help me stop using social media, i find that the only way to get over an addiction is to substitute it with a new one. this is because we are always looking for something to keep our minds busy
Hey Ali! I had a suggestion that you could include in your video. When it comes to talking about your sponsors, lets take the current one for example - Productivity Lab, I think including a detailed little tid bit about why it works would significantly help convey its effectiveness. So for example, with Productivity Lab, you could tell us from a biological perspective why productivity lab helps students - what happens in the brain when you work with other people that increases your productivity so much and helps you get started and successful? It would enrich the results of the product by telling us how those results came about to be. Just some food for thought!
This video came out just at the right time, I had already stepped back from every social media this whole year and I only had Reddit installed and told myself that it is "helpful" but today I got rid of it finally! Now it's time to add new stuff in place of those habits. Thank you
Porn addiction, weed and junk food and poor sleep were pretty much all the things giving me brain fog. Once I stop doing all of these my brain fog is pretty much gone! I also found that fixing vitamin and mineral deficiencies along with taking a Omega 3 supplement help a lot too. The rest is my diet, low carb throughout the day, high carb for workouts and strenuous activity. Drink plenty of water too!
This is one of the most insightful things I have learned about brain chemistry as a trained psychotherapist. Thank you so much. I love the connection to our hunter/gatherer society as well.
Thank you so much for this video!! I'm literally so grateful for it right now since you just tell evidence based simple facts, that are easy to digest!❤ And you guys out there, don't blame yourself because you might have adhd or autism or depression or anything, it's not your fault you feel that way. It's because we live in a world that has evolved faster than our brains and bodies and nobody is made to sit on a desk for 8h, with or without neurodiversity!
This is interesting. In one of my videos, I explained my experience trying 'phone fasting' without knowing that this was what the term was called. It is definitely an enlightening experience. I will take your advice to try to incorporate this as a regular practice in my daily routine.
I been actually thinking about making changes in 2025. I love playing video games but I also love other hobbies and I want to moderate them so I can enjoy what I can. This video really helped me and I will be following your work.
Just recently I had the success of pushing past the mental block and find enjoyment on the other side. I’m working to start a TH-cam channel and defining my audience has been a challenge. But with the help of the 5 Hour TH-camr course and some time, I climbed the hill and about 20 minutes in began the joyful ride to shaping and moving toward my goal. Thanks for sharing what is happening in the brain and the encouragement to push through the hard into the reward!

Thank you Ali! Nice video. I saved it in one of my folders. In these years i add in my everyday life habits such as: Meditation, reading, listening good music, talk with new people when i have the possibility and others... I think that it is important to find pleasure again in the small things. Now that i'm in Australia and travelling the world, i'm trying to understand what i really want from my life and these good habits are helping me a lot.
Hi, I just want to say Thank You for every inspiring video you post in you YT channel. After watching your videos, I have started become more productive and my dopamine has increased. Keep inspiring and motivating
In German there is a saying: „Erst die Arbeit, dann das Vergnügen“ - „First work, then pleasure“. I always thought it to be outdated, from a time of hardship and German discipline. It seems, there is more to it than I thought ;) A very interesting contribution, thanks! From experience, I can agree to everything. Your points and examples made me realise that I actually know how dopamine feels in my body. It‘s quite motivating.
wow this is the best and most relatable life advice i've heard in my life. i genuinely can relate to everything in this video (excitedly awaiting the next vid). Also great vid idea man
It was really mind blowing when i heard about find your flow. Because just the previous day before watching this video, I heard about the "Flow state" in Blue Lock anime ep 5 with the same words. All the information in this video is really amazing as well
hello Ali i have been watching you for 2 years. I've seen so many videos on youtube but i have very few favorite channels and you are one of them. I've learnt so many things from here.thank you so much
Hamza has been correct about this all the time and I feel that the world is slowly starting to realize that there is something awfully wrong with the systems we have put faith in. Looking forward to other parts of the series!
I was shocked when you said that the first 3 things we should do in the morning are brush our teeth, wash our face with cold water and make our beds, because these are my first 3 things I do in the mornig. Now I know where I get my motivation for the day from!
a tip for the “trouble starting stuff” thing: I used to do this in uni, i would tell myself I only have to work on the assignment for 5-10 mins. Then I can stop. But just start. That way I felt less pressure and actually got to start something. Sometimes I would stop after the 5 mins I would set but most of the time I would stay on doing the assignment. Starting is always the hardest part. And it was way easier to pick back up if i only did the 5 minutes bc i already started it, i wouldn’t be thinking “i’m starting it” my brain would more or less think of it as “i have to finish this” which was way easier than starting something
I absolutely love the HomeKong lights in the back! Had so many life changing experiences in HK, I hope you have the best time and experiences whilst you're there too
I think the best way for human beings to move forward to be in an equilibrium state of mind and having a substantial self awareness that comes to them naturally without so much of struggle to put in the effort, is to incorporate some sort of activities like meditations, nature walks, etc., starting from primary schools, activities that very typical in monasteries or any places offering spiritual or well-being practices. These activities should be made as part of a curriculum in each and every schools and universities in the world. This will allow human beings to have a more balanced and fruitful lives, improve mental and emotional health, maintain a happy balance between technology and actual LIFE. There are many scientific research and findings showing that these activities have long lasting permanent benefits to human mind/brain. This is just my 2 cents as a corporate tech worker for 38 years of my life. 😄
Wow! this is awesome! I am so looking forward for the rest of this series. I’m such such a nerd when it comes to brain science. And yes, I read the dopamine nation, a couple of months ago, really good book. Right now I’m making some financial decisions so I can join productivity Lab, sounds awesome!
Bro this tech giants have fair share on this! They need to offer us to opt-out to shortform contents. It's freakin everywhere you can't escape it. Big creators need to advocate for this to keep youtube healthy.
@@emilyb5557 Thanks for the advice bud. Also just wanted to tell you that they have event last month they are shipping "show fewer short" feature before end of year. But your suggestion will do for now.
@@emilyb5557i did something in the settings on youtube then kept clicking on not intrested on every short and now TH-cam shows me none (on my other acc)
On this acc tho I did something else I downloaded an app called ascent and it blocks all short-form content on every main stream app that has it Tik tok, insta, snap, youtube idk if there's more No facebook tho But after a while you build resilience anyway
Thank you for creating this 4 part series. I really enjoyed the first one and the subjects discussed and ideas to help curtail the issues around dopamine. Take Care.
There js an app called ascent its a game changer for me I haven't seen a short or a reel since I downloaded it It blocks them But you need to decide not to watch too since you can unblock them
I switched out my smartphone with an old fashioned Nokia flip phone, and it has changed my life. I moved to England to study, and I needed my phone to use google maps and such until got used to the new environment, and I was back to my bad habits again. I turned it off again, hopefully for the last time.
Oh man, I just started listening to the podcast. It was funny seeing this pop up and realizing for once I actually knew what it was about beforehand! Really good talk though, I always love these kind of things because, even if you _know_ something, it's helpful to hear it again and get it internalized a little bit more. I really liked the tips for just starting your morning - it's not uncommon for someone to say you should just get started, don't look at your phone, etc etc, but for some reason having it framed against the backdrop of dopamine and motivation really makes it click. I definitely have never made a habit of choosing a harder path and idk, maybe I should try.
Only thing harder than finding a life mission is finding the next one after you achieve it. In 2022 I got 90% of what I wanted in life (dream girl, married, emigrated, great job) and since then in the absence of the Dream™ I've slid into overweight, unmotivated and addicted to junk media.
Hey Ali, one again it was an amazing video! One thing that I should write here is that the prices of your products are much higher than most of the people could afford, like joining the productivity lab and PTYA. It might not be that much money in Europe or the U.S, but it is huge money in most of the countries. We'd all really appreciate it if you make the price affordable for everyone. Thanks.
What’s really helped me not use my phone for period before bed and after waking up is an Apple Watch. Yes, maybe ideally, we don’t use technology at all in these periods, but it’s just so good because you can listen to audiobooks and music from it and also you’re never really staring at its screen for long
As a mom who does let her children have occasional screen time, this video really made it click for me how the screens are hurting my kids brains. Everyone says it, but never a why that actually made logical/biological sense instead of just judgement. Boredom increases dopamine! It literally IS good for kids to be bored! Time for more “music only” days as I call them! And for me too.
Hi Ali, your work has been very helpful to me. Thank you so much for what you do. I am excited that I started my quarterly quests and weekly priorities today and also set up journaling formats for the morning manifestos and weekly check-ins. I thought I'd take a look at this video too (if I watch too many though, I get too many ideas to implement 😅). About this content...it's interesting that dopamine is released after doing a challenging task, and you spoke to how it has to be a flow/balance. When you mentioned stress surrounding a task, it perked my ears, because this is a hurtle for me. I tend to take much longer to complete activities than I anticipate, so often when I accomplish something or make progress, my mood drops because it wasn't in the "right" time-frame or I'm not satisfied with my execution the way I had hoped. It makes every activity a potential disappointment and wrecks my motivation. Do you have any suggestions for this issue? I picked up on the idea of pairing down, and this will help, but I'm not sure what to do about the part where I'm so hard on myself. What do you think?
Hi I am not Ali But When you set a time to make a task especially if it's repetitive ( tidying up, studying, working, or whatever you do every once in a while) Set a realistic timer and don't hold yourself to perfect values See what time you needed to perform certain task while doing your best and use it as your own unique standard And plz don't compare your standard time to others IF YOU took longer bc you procrastinated or wasn't focused hold yourself accountable yes But plz don't when you're doing your best ❤
Also about (if I watch too many I get too many ideas to implement) After trying them filter out stuff that didn't work EVEN THO you were trying your best Not everything will work for You and that's ok
@@qrazy6560 Thanks for chiming in. Those suggestions are good advice. I will time myself on some tasks, and see what insight I can gain from that. And I’ll pay attention to what productivity tactics jive best with me. And both without comparisons. :)
Thank you for your videos Ali!! They've been super encouraging especially during my PhD journey. And no I'm not a bot, just didn't change my screen name handle haha Keep up the great work!!! Been a subscriber for years
Excellent video and looking forward to the rest of this series. As someone who relies on their phone to run a business and advertise on socials, I find it so hard to keep dopamine in balance with how these apps target and distract you from your goals. Staying focused and having goals is so much more important than it used to be not just for success, but to keep yourself from spiraling out of control and into depression.
So I've lived on this Earth starting like in the TV generation and working my way to the internet era and now social media and smartphones. The main thing I've learned from this so far is how the dopamine is created and how that it's consumed. But the last thing I need or want is for someone that's so much younger than I am, to tell me not to unlock my cell phone, and use something else as an alarm clock. So from my perspective you told me how the dopamine is created and how it is used up, in red headlong from their tried to change everything, including the way that I live. I will take the first part of the video and then leave the rest to everyone else.😊
Do not enjoy that not aligned with your values. That and applying simple kindness to everyone and everything just might be my two favorite life heuristics.
I am struggling in a dopamine loop of doing things I don't want to just because of dopamine. I'm gonna be honest dopamine is a fine glass of beer. Once you start it, you can't stop it. Anyways found this video helpful. At the time of writing I'm 10 mins in the video and I can say it is a banger.

How can I download opal
Thank you
Thank you, Ali, for explaining dopamine in such a simple way and how it affects us nowadays.
One of the most succinct and process-focused videos I've ever seen on YT 🙏🏻
Watch your videos and read your book have helped me to pass the TOEIC Listening and Reading, without the feeling of working,
Thanks for that
Porn addiction, weed and junk food and poor sleep were pretty much all the things giving me brain fog.
I'm literally so grateful for it right now since you just tell evidence based simple facts, that are easy to digest!❤
And you guys out there, don't blame yourself because you might have adhd or autism or depression or anything, it's not your fault you feel that way. It's because we live in a world that has evolved faster than our brains and bodies and nobody is made to sit on a desk for 8h, with or without neurodiversity!
I'm a minute into this video and already feel like its going to be super impactful and helpful. Keep up the great work!
I don't know how I'm only JUST finding out about you, but you are INCREDIBLE. Thank you for your work!
This has helped me understand dopamine better than anything else! So powerful, helpful, and actionable! THANK YOU! Been a fan, got the book, grateful for your work!
I needed this so much! Thank you. I’m struggling so much and can’t wait for the rest of the series. I actually understood everything u had to say and it really got me going
So thankful bro, ur fr helping me to change my life and habits, I’ve watched like 3-4 videos of you and all of them have been useful, imma watch more of your content
This video has so much good information that I have to sit down and watch it a second time to take notes!
I agree!!
Is there anyone in the whole world, explain this concept in such a way. amazing ❤❤
wow this is the best and most relatable life advice i've heard in my life. i genuinely can relate to everything in this video (excitedly awaiting the next vid).
I've learnt so many things from here.thank you so much
This video came out just at the right time. Thank you man!
This was one of the best Podcast Episodes I ever listened to on your Podcast, Ali ❤
The most useful video I could've come across, thank you Ali!!
As a content creator I should thank you for your inputs, it's definitely helping me to grow my channel ❤ Thank you 😊
a tip for the “trouble starting stuff” thing: I used to do this in uni, i would tell myself I only have to work on the assignment for 5-10 mins.
I love this. I’ve been passionate about the DOSE chemicals for 6 years now
I absolutely love the HomeKong lights in the back!
Thank you Ali! You are the best to watch in a flow state!
"Move my body" after waking up is the biggest take-away from this video. Thank You!
It is beautiful to put off the phone and jot anything in the mind with a pen and a paper notebook. 🌟
Wow! this is awesome!
Click not interested show fewer shorts next to the bunch of shorts. TH-cam will stop shoving so many of them at you. I found it helped!
@@emilyb5557
Thanks for the advice bud.
Also just wanted to tell you that they have event last month they are shipping "show fewer short" feature before end of year.
But your suggestion will do for now.
@@emilyb5557i did something in the settings on youtube then kept clicking on not intrested on every short and now TH-cam shows me none (on my other acc)
On this acc tho I did something else
I downloaded an app called ascent and it blocks all short-form content on every main stream app that has it
Tik tok, insta, snap, youtube idk if there's more
No facebook tho
But after a while you build resilience anyway
Thank you for creating this 4 part series. I really enjoyed the first one and the subjects discussed and ideas to help curtail the issues around dopamine. Take Care.
As Humans we should start Thinking about banning short Videos to protect ourselves
There js an app called ascent its a game changer for me I haven't seen a short or a reel since I downloaded it
It blocks them
But you need to decide not to watch too since you can unblock them
because of you i didnt get up an make myself a bowl of instant ramen, i got a kiwi instead 🎀 a win is a win lads
Holy shite!
You are preaching to me!!!!! 🙋🏽♀️Like for real for real.
Taking notes. Moving plugs.
Visualizing my mornings in a new way.
Ali Abdaal the treasure of youtube! Thank you for the amazing and sensible content. Cheers from Bengaluru India 🇮🇳
Only thing harder than finding a life mission is finding the next one after you achieve it.
In 2022 I got 90% of what I wanted in life (dream girl, married, emigrated, great job) and since then in the absence of the Dream™ I've slid into overweight, unmotivated and addicted to junk media.
Thanks for this, helpful three steps: distraction fasting, purposeful flow state, and cold showers as a way to do what we do not want to.
Yes, maybe ideally, we don’t use technology at all in these periods, but it’s just so good because you can listen to audiobooks and music from it and also you’re never really staring at its screen for long
Dear Ali, this was really helpful. Thank you so much for putting this video up. it gave me a clear road map.
Who is Student here ?
Me
@Umar_Akmal96_Officialstats shows it all who's king. Be logical blud

@Umar_Akmal96_Official Kl rahul!
My name is student
The Videos i always wanted from you ❤
Hi Ali, your work has been very helpful to me.
Hi
I am not Ali
But
When you set a time to make a task especially if it's repetitive ( tidying up, studying, working, or whatever you do every once in a while)
Set a realistic timer and don't hold yourself to perfect values
See what time you needed to perform certain task while doing your best and use it as your own unique standard
And plz don't compare your standard time to others
IF YOU took longer bc you procrastinated or wasn't focused hold yourself accountable yes
But plz don't when you're doing your best ❤
Also about (if I watch too many I get too many ideas to implement)
After trying them filter out stuff that didn't work EVEN THO you were trying your best
Not everything will work for You and that's ok
@@qrazy6560 Thanks for chiming in. Those suggestions are good advice. I will time myself on some tasks, and see what insight I can gain from that. And I’ll pay attention to what productivity tactics jive best with me. And both without comparisons. :)
Wow Ali this video is amazing! Haven’t had a piece of content cut through for me like this in a long time ✨
Thank you soo much ali for u slow your vocabulary speed.. this is amazing ❤
Hi! Thank you. This video helped me and I look forward to the series!
This is really helpful for me, thanks for sharing
Thanks for this! I've just listened to a podcast by Andrew Huberman on dopamine.
Thank you for your videos Ali!! They've been super encouraging especially during my PhD journey. And no I'm not a bot, just didn't change my screen name handle haha Keep up the great work!!! Been a subscriber for years
as always perfect , you helped me a lot in every area of my life
Thanks Ali, I needed this video
Amazing content🚀I also enjoyed the podcast with Tj a lot, which motivated my video this week.
Thank you for this. I'm going to try so hard to put these into practice 🙏
Amazing and Very Knowledgeable Video ❤❤ Would love a Deep Dive Podcast with John Zeratsky and Jake Knapp 😊
Great video Ali! Very informative I even took some notes. Excited for the rest of the series!
Really inspiring, I needed this! Thank you :)
love it! this will be one of my future references for resetting my focus!
Much needed video! thank you!
Excited about this series. Great video 👏
The medical explanations - which were given in a very digestible format - were very nice in this video. Appreciate the style!
It was so good! Thank you for making this🎉
So I've lived on this Earth starting like in the TV generation and working my way to the internet era and now social media and smartphones.
Thank you, this video is so helpful! Also, I love listening to Pirates of the Caribbean when studying!
At the time of writing I'm 10 mins in the video and I can say it is a banger.
banger video
