Hey Ali, great video. Can you please include in your next email sesh checking out my email related to YT Accelerator Account Manager role? 🙂 That would mean a world to me. Thanks!
Mindfulness is one the best ways to start learning. It helps to train your brain to create the habit. Tara Brachs RAIN technique is a wonderful way to begin to recognize and work with the underlying emotional patterns that take away from your goals and happiness 🙏🏼
Summary of the video 1. The 10-Minute Rule When you feel the urge to give in to a distraction, try postponing it for 10 minutes. During this time, write down what’s distracting you and brainstorm ways to prevent it in the future. 2. The Willpower Myth "Ego depletion," or the idea that willpower is a limited resource, often affects only those who believe in it. The key is to recognize that self-control isn’t necessarily limited-you can maintain it by shifting your mindset. 3. Traction Through Timeboxing To stay focused, use timeboxing: Identify tasks Set specific goals Allocate time blocks to each task Work without interruptions Review and adjust your process, and take breaks as needed 4. The Rule of Pacts Use pacts to strengthen commitment: Price Pact: Set a monetary penalty if you don’t meet your goal. Effort Pact: Link your distraction to a challenging task, making it harder to indulge. Identity Pact: Commit to a self-image that aligns with what you truly want to achieve.
Judging my success of my work day by 'did I do - what I said I was going to do - for as long as I said I was going to do it - without being distracted' has CHANGED the way I feel at the end of the day. Thank you, thank you.
Just when I needed this video! It's like it popped up at the perfect moment. Can't wait to put these Indistractable tips into action and finally stay focused on my goals. Who else is ready to say goodbye to distractions? 💯🔥
This was one of the handiest videos you've made, Ali! Thank you, I already feel more power bubbling inside my body. Now gonna put this energy to work!💪😎
This was very enlightening. Thanks for this video. As a single mom of 4 I struggle daily and even though I do work with time slots and lists of what I need to do by when etc...just adding kids to the mix makes it challenging. My fridge broke the other day and my brain just couldn't figure it out...what to do and how to save my food from spoiling. Grateful for friends around me to help, but man...whatever happened to the 20 year old version of myself that was quick to respond and pretty good at problem solving (I'm 42 now). Anyway...this video gave me stuff to ponder and implement. Thanks!
Usually, the things I'm avoiding thru social media/time-wasters are general life maintenance tasks: cleaning, cooking, showering, etc. I might be living on a higher level, with more energy, if I got those things done more consistently. But they're incredibly unmotivating.
exactly what i needed , ty ! i aspire to be like you , for real i am syrian and am trying real hard to provide anyway i can , you motivate me so thank you!
A problem I've seen in the literature about Ego Depletion - in particular on the "only people who believe in it experience ego depletion" claim, and that the belief can simply be switched to eliminate it - is that it seems equally likely that there's a subset who DO experience Ego Depletion in a genuine, underlying way, which obviously shapes their beliefs about it. So the study I want to see is one where people who claim Ego Depletion are trained or convinced out of it. Because that recommended action of "simply change your mindset" doesn't seem to follow from the original study, which was correlative rather than causative. Would be really glad if anyone knows of such a study!
The proactive approach to time management is gold. If we are not actively leading our life - which time IS the essence of - others are doing it for us. Ads and marketing agencies steal our attention away. There is no void, vacuum sucks something in. Either you choose it, or someone else will for you - often not with your best interest at heart.
Thank you Ali for making this video! Watching you after a long time, still very refreshing & your enthusiasm is the same, lots of love to you, thank you so much !!
I am studying, but I suddenly feel the urge to watch something on TH-cam. I chose this video as a positive distraction to help me overcome my tendency to seek distractions and avoid the real work that needs to be done.)))

I was distracted so much trying to watch this video in particular that it took me 4 tries to get to the 3:50 minute mark where you said I'd probably click away. I've watch multiple 1h+ youtube videos over the course of a week trying to complete this video.
wait, so what do you do with those internal triggers once you identified them and wrote them down? Would be great if you'd talk more about what kind of steps one can put in place to avoid those distractions in the future.
This video is fantastic. I've started accepting the triggers that distract me and occasionally feed them for a short amount of time as a reward for xxx minutes of work - almost like setting small goals for myself. It sounds like I've been doing the 10 minutes rule without knowing :)
Great video! I just created a distraction "notebook" on my Amplenote account. I'm also glad that I've been organizing my tasks by time blocking them using the Amplenote calendar mode, and the way I do it is pretty similar to the way you mentioned in the video. When you use the right tool, it's easier to do things right.
so, the main idea is: Distraction stems primarily from internal triggers, not external factors; managing emotions is key to staying focused. And a recommendation would be: Practice the 10-minute rule and time-boxing to control attention and align actions with goals.
It feels like god has put this video in-front of you when sometimes TH-cam recommends a video like this when you are feeling like shi*t about yourself due to distractions followed by guilt.. Thank you Ali for the video!❤
Heyy, Ali. I've been away from TH-cam for a while on my own productivity venture. Watching this now, the first thing that crosses my mind is that oh yeah, it's been I listened to your 1.5x talking speed 😅🙌♥️
me: getting ready to close the video Ali: 'if you are the type of person to be distracted, youre probably not going to watch the rest of this video' me: *Blank face*
This was a great video. I actually learned a lot. I appreciate you doing this. However, I did believe will power was a depletable/limited resource. I'm over the battle of the scientific papers and experts coming out with one theory only for it to be debunked 2 days later. I am neuordivergent and my ADHD doctor and coach were advising me based on the depletable/limited willpower theory. Also, I that everyone is different some of these techniques may or may not work with my quirky brain. I definitely have executive function issues. Nonetheless, very helpful video and I will start implementing most of these strategies ASAP. I signed up for your Focus Crash Course too! Looking forward to it. Also, thanks for the updated research on willpower. 🙂
1. 10 minute rule: internal trigger of boredom, wait 10 minutes before giving into trigger 2. Willpower: say you have enough willlpower to do this, that you can do it 3. Time boxing: put alone time or date night in your calendar (how much time or effort it’ll take) 4. Pact: price (burn calories vs burn $100), effort (turn off wifi at 10pm), identity (I’m a gamer)
About willpower depletion: Why is there the idea of eating that frog first? Iso why do we need to do the heavier task first? Since we have unlimited willpower, why does the order matter? or is the order important for energy ?! Just wondering, v good video : )
I love Ali’s stuff, and general productivity stuff, but it makes me kind of depressed because I’ve got diagnosed ADHD and this stuff just makes me realize how differently my brain works. I’ve been developing my own aDhD productivity stuff that works for me. I understand so much more about myself working remotely. Maybe I should put it out in the world more to help those who also are afflicted with executive dysfunctions.
My attention span is so bad, I quit this video on the 47th sec but I came back and watched it. I still have the attention span of a goldfish because I quit halfway typing this comment too to watch some shorts recommended but Ali smashed it👊👊
I really love the content you create and try to apply them to my daily life. But do you think you can include how we can cope with ADHD? I feel like a lot of us who are trying to become more productive, probably also have ADHD and some of the solutions or tactics you suggest might not be applicable to our lives.
Thanks, I 100% agree, but for me, the most difficult thing is to create a plan for problem-solving, to force myself to follow the tasks one after another, and to maintain focus. Can you tell me how you plan your problem-solving approach (please not for classic problems where we know the steps to solve it beforehand, but for something new, like a research problem)?"
Hi Ali, can you pleaae do a video specifically for doctors who are trying to transition out of the medical field ? If you were to do it without already being someone with an amazing alternate stream of income ? It’d really help. Thanks.
Key practical takeaways from the video: 1. 10 minute rule * Procrastinate the distraction for at least 10 minutes or may be higher as much as you can. 2. Maintain a distraction notebook: * Become aware of those internal triggers. 3. Incorporate time-boxing technique. * Estimate time and attention required for a task and fix a time for it in calendar. 4. Implement the rule of Pacts * Attach some price to the task that if not done, you gonna pay. * Make it an effort to distract yourself - make distractions harder to indulge in. * Cultivate an identity that values time efficiency and attention efficiency.
