This might in fact, along with some very rare onboard videos, be the best F1 footage i have ever seen. 3 main reasons: 1) I never gave a damn about Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes, ... my heroes are called Arrows, Minardi, EuroBrun, Coloni, Zakspeed ...! But those teams were so irrelevant, you never see good footage of them. 2) the sheer proximity and authenticity of it all! Being able to walk freely in the pitlane! 3) as others have pointed out, today's grid is ridiculously small. 1989 is just absurd, on the other hand - however, I love it!
This footage is incredible. A real historical document of an era of F1 which will never be repeated. When any reasonably proficient junior formula team could build a basic chassis, strap a Cosworth or a Judd to it and attempt to qualify for a world championship race.
39 cars, free access to the paddock, Broken Wings... How lucky the guys who were able to witness it were. F1 nowadays is a boring and soulless party for the ultrarich.
Amazing stuff. Nicola Larini made a fantastic race with the Osella at Canada under a pouring rain. He started on P15 and he was on P3 for more than ten laps until his Ford Cosworth engine got broken on lap 33.
Nicola Larini was seriously underrated. He moved around a lot. It would have been nice to see him get multiple seasons at someplace like Jordan or Tyrrell. He would have surprised some people.
Wow.. fantastic video. Amazing sounds on the pit straight. Everyone loved an underdog, and here were a whole qualifying session of them! Drivers and teams. All legends in my eyes, and part of my childhood watching them all and hoping they'd qualify.. to make it to a Sunday grid was like a victory.
It's a great pity we won't see anything like this for a while in F1. There is a case for a separate second division F1 championship - these guys could've had a separate race before the proper F1 so their weekend wasn't entirely wasted. Or they could have taken then hillclimbing or put them in head to head races like at the Bologna Motor Show or something. Lovely footage, thank you for sharing this!
Sadly now days unless you have a grandstand ticket at this track your viewing access is very restricted. These days you could never get the shots where most of this was filmed.
Amazing footage. It gives really gives me chills hearing all those pitlane/racing sounds. I wish i had an opportunity to visit one of those pre-qualis live. Must have been incredible irl.
You pack up 1 or 2 cars, have them flown from your team base in Europe to Montréal, drivers, crew and equipment all flown over. And then boom, it's 9 am on Friday morning and your weekend is over. Interesting to see every car is running a V8, I assume in the first year after the turbo ban there were not a ton of options outside of the Cossie. I prefer the engine variety of your 1992 video, but all your videos are great. Thanks!
Larrousse ran the V12 Lambo but they dropped into prequalifying after this race. I believe the first "customer" non V8 was the Minardi Ferrari from 1991.
Priceless footage. One now realizes why these micro teams no longer exist and that's due to tobacco money having disappeared. A majority of the drivers were sponsored by Marlboro and those who weren't were sponsored by Camel, Barclays or West.
Wonderful ! My husband was there, exit of the Casino Hairpin. Stefan Johansson was the first F1 car his friend had ever seen or heard irl. Thanks for posting!!
I grew up with late 70s 80s and 90s F1. I have been watching many different F1 videos over the last few years from these times And I continually see the same comments over and over, the gist of which are……..F1 used to be incredible and now it sux! My sentiments exactly.
Was that Martin Brundel in the white and black car? I though spotted his helmet. Love all your Canadian footage, priceless videos...Im a Montrealer myself.
Superbe reportage 👌✨ bravo 👍👏 l'époque où la F1 valait le coup d'être vu regardé à la TV le bruit des moteurs 😜👌✨👍 aujourd'hui la F1 est nulle et sans intérêt 🤮🤢

you bet, broken wings man this is 1989. Something mystical about F1 and broken wings.

Thanks Rob - great comment 😊
Larini was runnning third during the race before his electrics failed.
reasonably proficient junior teams or money laundering schemes? that's the question for a lot of the Pre-Qually era teams lmao
@solitaryclusterofneurons598 Don't forget drug money in the group C era.

Well said.
This is a joy to watch. Total antithesis of the sterile and clinical show that F1 is today. Cars that look like cars and mechanics in denims 😂
Thanks for the comment. I completely agree!
It's always been a rich persons play ground.

Many thanks. I have a long video of the race I’ll be uploading soon.

У Никола Ларини был свой шанс в Имоле 1994 и он его не упустил. К сожалению, это был черный уикенд

Thanks for your comment! I was on cloud 9 filming this and my heart was beating fast!
Wow finally I got to listen the Yamaha V8 sound, it was pretty much near impossible to find. Great capture
Thanks for your comments!
Awesome quality video. And good old time, when we could film cars from the pitlane. Now, unless you have a 1 million ticket...
Very good and quality video extremely rare footage from this period . Thanks for that .
Very welcome!
Incredible footage. Thanks for uploading and sharing!
Very welcome!

I was there! And by that I mean I was born and living in Montreal at the time, 3 months old and miles away from the race. But in spirit, I was there.
Definitely there!
Thank you fo these great memories. Where F1 was open for every Team. Great times.
Great Upload. I have some old F1 memories uploaded as well :)

Proper cars, & proper ballsy drivers. Sadly unlike today.
Absolutely agree!
incredible footage 🤩
Thanks!
A young Bernd Schneider!
Bernd certainly had a long career!
@@robhurley5258The GOAT of DTM.

Absolutely!
Amazing👍
Thanks 😄
This was when Formula 1 was truly a Sport. Now it's an Entertainment Cartel.
Agreed!
That Osella Fondmetal is pretty.
Lots of good looking cars in Prequalifying that never got much coverage.
Both of the 89 Brabham's are coming to the Adelaide Motorsport Festival in March this year. After a couple of years break cannot wait for this event 👍
Nice
La Brabham fu costretta alle prequalifiche non avendo disputato il campionato di f1 88
priceless
Was that Martin Brundel in the white and black car? I though spotted his helmet. Love all your Canadian footage, priceless videos...Im a Montrealer myself.
Yes it is, Martin had car number 7
It's actually navy blue and white - Brabham's classic colours.
Strange to see names like Johanson, Brundle and Larini in this group.
They should have done a sprint race on Saturday for the non qualifiers, at least for them to get some race experience, everyone would gained on that.
That would have been cool.
