It was implied by Sugar that after seeing Steven's message, Spinel was overcome with such an intense amount of grief that it outright poofed her.
So Spinel basically suffered the Gem equivalent of a heart attack due to the overwhelming grief and sadness that hit her like a meteor.
That hit her like a friggin Injector, TO THE FACE
Oof and she got the rejuvenatior and injector from pinks storage. Sugar told that at a book signing, and I was there!!

About Spinnel becoming evil again suddenly. She clearly experienced some heavy trauma with the whole 6000 years standing still thing, after all that horrible experience it is going to take a lot of time for her to fully recover. After she goes with the diamonds, the tear marks are still there, you can't simply delete her trauma with some song. In the end of the movie she took the first big step to recovery, but she still has a long way to go.
in SU future's OP the mark are gone, it could be an animation error but we'll have to see

It’s wild how Rebecca sugar created spinel based on an old toy she left in the sandbox for 2 years then later put a foreshadowing song in adventure time called “ everything stays”. This lady’s storytelling skills are so amazing.
The entire Earth wasn't dead, since spinel made the injector go too fast, most of it just spilled out onto Beach City instead of spreading across the entire planet.
Still, half of the poison if not more was injected regularly. You'd think it would make more of a damage to, well... The planet.
