    I shot my AA piston upper 600-700 rounds before I ever cleaned it. When I wiped the bolt with a paper towel it barely had anything on it. I absolutely love mine. No carrier tilt problems with mine in over 1,000 rounds shot.

      They are SORT of self cleaning. They dont crud up like a DI gun. But they need a very simple disassembly and quick cleaning. No lubing. Just put it back together. Talking just about the piston.
      The BCG is insanely easy to clean after 1000 rounds. Few minutes of wiping and very light re-lube.

    I purchased this exact AA "Blem" from Bud's last year. There was no blem visible and after a year, this is the result:
    - PMAG's - Tula caused only FTFeed (2 mags - 5 FTF). Everything else flawless and Tula is bargain based so I do not blame the rifle.
    - MAGPUL M-Lok forend added and fits if bells and whistles are desired.
    - It runs clean.
    Adams Arms customer service was responsive when contacted to replace charging handle (free replacement with no hassles and prompt).
    * My opinion is just that, but I would recommend and believe this is worth every penny of the $600 paid.

However, it was caused by a cracked P-Mag. As the first AR15 platform I've ever owned I couldn't Possibly recommend it more for an entry level 5.56/.223 AR type rifle.

    I used the AR/M16A2 when I was in the Army and although loved shooting it, I hated having to clean it after every range time visit. I'm sold on the Gas-Piston system, less maintenance, less fouling, less heat transfer, less wear on the bolt carrier group. Set me up an H&K 556 (gas-piston system)! it's what our Special Ops guys use; Delta, SF, ST6, SEALs, etc.

    You can buy the Adams Arms piston kit to retrofit your current AR - I think they're around $350 for the carbine length setup.
    I'm a huge fan of this system and the VooDoo barrels. The gunsmith at our shop put together one of my ARs and I chose both of these parts. The piston setup keeps the gun running cool and clean which adds to reliability and reduces maintenance and the VooDoo barrels are amazing!
    Melonite is similar to the Tenifer process that Glock uses so it hardens the metal without adding any thickness and this means their barrels can be made to exact specifications whereas when you are chrome lining a barrel to have to make it a little larger to compensate for the thickness of the chrome. On top of that VooDoo barrels have polygonal rifling like a Glock.
    I'm no sharpshooter but I swear I can reach out further and more accurately with this rifle over my Rock River.

    This is outstanding!!! So many folks think an AR is an AR. The impingement is great for most applications for civilians, but they don't like water, dirt or sand. Piston ARs can take a little more abuse. I love em all! Thanks for showing the difference!!!!

    • @ricks.1092
      @ricks.1092 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Armed and Feminine And yet Direct Impingement is great for military applications. Since out military is still using them. A DI, AR is not broken. It's easy to maintain. In fact most people probably over lubricate their AR's. I run a Nickel Boron BCG in all my AR's. From the budget ones to the expensive ones. I can shoot well over 1500 rounds till I have to add very little lube to the bolt. Also, a DI gun will work great even dirty. The key is keeping the BCG lubed.

  • @whatfor5
    @whatfor5 9 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    The important thing about nitriding or meloniting is that it isn't a coating like hard chrome, so it doesn't add thickness and doesn't flake. It is surface conversion, it is a type of high tech case hardening with nitrogen basically. This preserves tolerances, and, critically, creates a diffusion gradient rather than a distinct boundary. It is, for all practical purposes, the superior technology. These days, if you're selling guns with a chrome lined bore, to be brutally honest you're kind of a dinosaur.
    For those who wanted to know. :)

    • @proliance
      @proliance 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Whatfor5 Well said. When I chose my CMMG a few years ago over everything else it was because of the nitrided barrel. A lot of people were saying if your rifle's not milspec and chrome lined, it's not worth having. They don't say that in 2015.

    • @ricks.1092
      @ricks.1092 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Whatfor5 Actually Nickel Boron (NiB) is better than Nitriding/Melonite (trade mark name). However, due to the slickness of NiB it actually takes away from the rifling doing its job. I'm confident that over time and newer technological advancements...in applying NiB.....That NiB will be superior to Nitride. Due to NiB is inherently stronger and harder than Nitride. Nitride is roughly 66-70 with consistency of being 68 RHc. Whereas, NiB is 72-76, consistently at 72 or 74 RHc. Also, Nitride goes on "Clear" and then manufactures usually Black Oxide over the Nitride. Both products are metal treatments. Which subsequently fuse at a molecular level at the substrate of the metal. That's the outer most layer of the metal. Though chrome line bores will not be as even on the surface. You're talking 10 thousands of an inch. Why you might lose .25 MOA at most. And that will appear at distances at 750 meters or more. Chrome is still an excellent choice. And has a track record. Something NiB or Nitride hasn't proven itself in the long haul. Though it looks promising. I agree Nitride will eventually replace chrome lining.

    • @AmoebicMagician
      @AmoebicMagician 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Whatfor5 after experimenting with a nitrided virgin yugo barrel in an AK build I did many years ago, they have been my preference by a wide margin. Not only are the barrels MUCH more accurate than chrome lined specimens, I literally have not been able to shoot one out yet, even that old build I did around that Yugo barrel, which has lived at our camping property without moisture or temperature control and digested countless tins of cheap surplus and steel cased import such as "wolf" and the like- it not only looks new down the bore (aside from what I can only term a 'pinprick' effect in the leade area) but shoots the same way, and while the hammer and parts of the rails have gotten some rust, the barrel has remained COMPLETELY inviolate and corrosion free these many years. Nitriding is hands down and undeniably the better option- it was before, and with advances in technology it is moreso today.

    • @AmoebicMagician

      Rick S you literally have no idea what you are talking about

    • @anthonyclark9159
      @anthonyclark9159 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Rick S nib is still a coating and can flake off, something that you never have to worry about with nitride, also like you said a nitride barrel will usually be more accurate, so nib isn't better just different

    Adams arms is good stuff I wouldnt call em lower end just cause they are affordable. They use a military 1-7 twist barrel when most use 1-9 twist sport/civilian barrels they also have nice voodoo melonite coated barrels as opposed to chorme lined which suck in my opinion and not to mention they are piston driven. I have shot alot of ar's and my adams arms tactical elite is the smoothest (bcg is super smooth like its on bearings) most accurate and clean ar ive shot besides a buddys VERY expensive mega maten which cost several grand to build. Ive shot thousands of rounds and NEVER had any malfunctions whatsoever not a sinlge jam ftf, fte nothing, steel case brass it eats it all

Really he shouldn't, the range should try to quit cold turkey, it's a horrible addiction, the 2L. I LOVE my Adams Arms ARs. I have the AA-15 bought as a blemish from Buds years ago and it’s been spectacular. I’ve changed the furniture of course to Magpul and the rail to an Magpul polymer MLOCK. The trigger I changed to a Geissele SD-E I think it is, a flat trigger. Seekins Precision safety. And I’m running a Leupold Freedom RDS BDC model. So I made it a more expensive piston driven gun but I made it exactly what I wanted and like you said, I didn’t have to buy expensive OE furniture just to take it off and replace it.
    I also have their AR-10 piston driven and it’s one of my favorites. It’s made for short range as well as being a good long range gun.
    Both have been flawless as far as quality and reliability

    First, I love how your cameraman John lost his focus on you and tracked the ant running across the table (15:07 haha). Anyway, I stumbled across a barely used AA Enhanced Patrol (has upgraded furniture & brake) and am very impressed with the quality. I think the upgrades are worth the extra $$ (free-floated hand guard, VooDoo (VDI) Brake, etc.) It would be better if they upgraded the trigger from the standard (but okay) AR trigger. Of course, with triggers and sights nobody would be happy in all probability as to each his own. Also all AA rifles come with MOA guarantee which is important to some. Of course, I have never shot an AR that wasn't MOA at least for some reason. Hope this helps someone out if considering this rifle.

    It is relatively easy to convert an AR 15 to piston from DI. I have converted two of my ARs to piston rifles using the Adam Arms piston conversion kits. The hardest part of the conversion was getting the DI gas block pin out. I had to beat that pin like it owed me money to remove it. An added plus when shooting an AR suppressed with a piston system is reduced gas blow back along cleaner shooting. Shooting DI suppressed is dirty since the suppressor pushes more gas back down the gas tube. An Adam Arms AR 10 may be a future purchase for me too.

    I would like to thank you for this video....I recently built an AR with the Adams Arms piston system. Somehow I must have misplaced the settings on the piston.....thanks for showing the settings on the piston. I have as of yet had no issues with my build. Having shot over 1200 rounds with no problems. I did incorporate Froglube into the build, (lol Froglube plug there), so far flawless....keep up the great video's.

    Looking back from 2022. Nice review Hickok45. I've got a Sig Sauer 516 Patrol Rifle upper mounted up on a lower that I bought some years ago. Yeah of course is a piston upper. I owned a DI gun and enjoyed it thoroughly until it came time to clean the BCG. I've grownto like the simplicity of cleaning a piston gun. The Sig upper is an excellent piece of work and I only have 2 complaints with it. 1 it's proprietary nature, 2 the 516 was discontinued and Sig when they discontinue a model they pretty much saw the limb out from under you. NO SUPPORT! The spare parts supply dries up. BAD IDEA SIG. Enjoyed the video Hickok. Take care and be safe.

    You can also build your own from an 80% receiver if you have a mini mill or a drill press with a jig. There are even composite 80% lower receivers that you can finish at home with a dremel and a drill. They cost under $100!

    In my experience the best retrofit piston system hands down in terms of keeping accuracy is Adams Arms. In my opinion the best piston AR is LWRC's line of rifles, which is a totally different system with gas escape ports in their piston cups, which allows for the piston to self-regulate.

    These are actually made right down the street from me. My father who is a machinist makes the buffer tube and charging handle for the AA 15. They are known locally to be very good guns and were hard to come buy after Sandy Hill. I don't have one but would like one.

    The "blem" upper I got from Adams Arms was a lot less than their non-blem upper. I found a scratch in the anno of the barrel under the handguard. It was impossible to see without removing the hand guard. Top notch quality I've been telling anyone who's looking for an upper to grab one of their blems.

    I have an original conversion kit on a 11 1/2 upper from when they first hit the scene that I run on my M16 (FULL AUTO) which is my Police duty patrol SBR and it has been AWESOME ! Thousands of rounds through it with lots on full auto. I have been so impressed with it that over the years I have purchased several others and just recently bought the P2 pistol. The springs look like they would break but I haven't had any replace don't ... they run like a BEAST ! I have bought my sons each one as well. I put 2700 rounds through my duty gun without cleaning it and it never really got any dirtier than it did after a few hundred rounds ... it runs cool and clean ... period.

    Love my AA blem from Bud's! Just be careful with a polymer BUS on the front gas block/selector. Have heard it gets warm enough to start melting them. Only drawback is the gas system is proprietary for AA so might consider a backup piston and bolt. Shoot me up!

    I didn't know there's a piston AR option in this budget. I might have to go that route. I like the M&P 15's price, but the lack of a dust cover and forward assist look "wrong" to me, and I would like a piston system if possible.
    Great video, Hickok! I'd been hoping for some entry level AR15 videos.
