I love how at 9:58 as he walks down to the propane tank you can hear him practically swimming through casings.
The Patriot Music to my ears
The sound of freedom
what the camera doesn't show is that he is up to his ankles in spent casings
Why bother buying pebbles for the range's floor if you can use all natural brass casings with no efforts :)
Lol that's great😂😂😂😂
I was an aircraft mechanic for several years. Worked around jets for 25 years.
Wore ear protection like a religion. Still have hearing loss...
ctxflyer Hearing loss is pretty much the "working man's affliction". :P Ever since big loud machinery was invented.
Although, lately more hearing loss is starting to occur because of headphones, but overall our modern world is pretty loud - all these people living close to trains. airports, highways, etc...
Draco, King of Dragon Men Yeah, about half (!) the cases seem to be connected to using headphones incorrectly these days, when it comes to hearing loss among young people.
That's also the point - you get up with a laud buzz, radio is on in an instant, because it's "weird" without music. You put on your headphones, set them loud enough for music to be at least audible with the traffic and stuff going on in the background, not to mention you probably need to crank it up when in the city transport (buses, trains, metro, crowded stations - not quite the quiet environment), etc, etc. Lots of noise in the city, all the time.
It's good to live in the village. ;)
Draco, King of Dragon Men Who knows, really. In case of headphones it's easy to lose hearing little by little. Every day you can crank it up just a tad louder completely without realizing it. ;)
Likely that's because Jet engines are easily one of the loudest things on the planet.
Lol I have a major sound setup in my whip, everytime i get out from slapping music my ears are ringing. But ive never had good hearing due to gunshots with no protection
I have started doubling up my hearing protection at the indoor range (earplugs & good headphones). It doesn’t matter if you’re only shooting a .22 LR pistol, if the guy next to you is shooting a .500 S&W Magnum revolver. Once you start losing your hearing there’s no getting it back, so you may as well protect what you got.
Yep. I lost more of my hearing from rock concerts back in the '70s than I ever will at the range.
I double up too but the pressure still gives me headaches sometimes.
@@Jedi_Jed What if a guy next to you is shooting a DSHK?
@@rickvia8435 I saw a country concert live, Eric church and he is way more “rock” live. Than in the Radio my hearing had never been the same.

I blame Johnny Winter for my hearing loss. My ears are still bleeding, from 45 years ago .
Firearm suppressors should be treated no differently than mufflers on motor vehicles. They should be seen as a tool of hearing protection and a sound ordinance/noise pollution standard, especially for those who shoot on their own property and don't want to piss the neighbors off. These gun lawmakers think everyone is 007 ninja assasins or something?
Tiger Strike anyone going into a school and blast people hallway by hallway without alerting any one not with direct line of sight
Rentless f you can still hear the gun, it’s not like it’s completely silent
The guns action alone is just over 108db, thats not including the gasses escaping or the round traveling through the air, or bullet richochets/impacts.
Even with a 22lr 16" rifle with subsonic ammo and a suppressor...everyone within 150ft will know that something is happening, the first victim will alert the rest and panic will ensue.
This is why "Mass Killings" with knives have higher death counts/victims than the average "Mass Killing" with firearms.
here have been 38 Mass Killings with Knives alone since 2006 and the average death count is much higher than the average death count of firearm-related Mass Killings. There are many more with Bombs (Already regulated heavily and Illegal to own without permits), cars, baseball bats, and other objects but when have you seen a report within the USA about these Mass Killings?
There is a agenda and a narrative, there is no other reason for the selective reporting of information. They paint a picture on the media that certain guns are worse than others, preaching some are "military assault weapons" (false made up term). They say the AR15 is one of them but the AR15 is not inherently military and nor does it have select fire function. It is a tactical looking hunting rifle and has been used in just a handful of Mass Killings, most are committed by handguns and rifles that shoot no more than 5 rounds before reloading. The firearm isnt important, the persons intent, mental stability, and nature is, especially when every Mass Killing has a trend that can easily been seen if you look at the details. All Mass Murderers have been medicated with Psychotropic Medications, due to having mental instability issues. They (Mass Murders) go to areas with little resistance (Gun Free Zones) that are largely populated, this is why restricting the access of more people to firearms will only lead to more defenseless victims.
Guns aren't the issue in today's society and its stunning people believe they are with how much information is now available to anyone with the internet. Guns are an inanimate object and have no control over the person wielding them, they are nothing more than a tool. The numbers being pushed around by the media for "Gun Violence" and "Mass Killings" are manipulated to get you to believe they happen more often than they actually do.
In the USA where 400 million Firearms are in the Hands of 100 million Gun Owners (1/3 of the US Adult Population) you would think that there would be more than 12,600 Deaths by firearms per year (Excluding Suicides), especially when most household and daily use objects kill many more times the amount of people per year. Most of that 12,600 Deaths are from Gang Violence, Police Kills, and Accidental Deaths, less than a 3rd of those deaths are from Legal gun owners using them against others. That kind of percentage is insane when the media constantly floats "Gun Violence" (nonsensical term) so often.
@@Raymo2u actually at 100yds that 22lr makes that Hollywood pew sound at 100 or 200 with .223 I've found it's a small pop but let me put it this way my firend ir you heard the shot it wasnt meant for you and there meant for work st a decent distance so that when you move in only a few enemies remain or they are used to make it difficult to detect right off the bat when enemy contact is engaging you from and those first 5 secs are crucial to engaging you can lose alot of people in that time
The thing is that most people that are going in for the Mass Killing scenario arent combat effective and usually just arrive and start their attack, they arent going about it like a SEAL. Remember, almost every single case they are Mentally Ill....but yes, if there are only a handful of people you wanted to take out and if you planned to take them all out within a few seconds it could be done....but then the suppressor or the sound would make a negligible difference at the sound would actually help stun and frighten your targets. Being in a enclosed area with hallways and cement walls, the sound would be audible closer than 100 yards and the impacts/gun action would be amplified.
Most people have slow reaction times, taking between .5 - 1 second to respond to loud noise/fear induced scenarios. You could pull off 4 shots in 1 second, if they are gathered or you have fore knowledge of your targets then you could easily take them out before they could react or get far enough away.
This isnt the issue though, the problem is people think that the setup makes the gun completely silent and no one would be alerted if you started shooting where not allowed. They like to use hypothetical scenarios and dont see any other scenario or variables that go against their "what ifs" as they have a fear of firearms in general and have absorbed a bit too much fear propaganda.

You're so eloquent but the way you can "dumb down" often complex physics and engineering principles, and you truly are the very best source of information for us shooting enthusiasts on the internet. Thank you sir. Warmly, Boston
Ya thats the thing with 223. The power of the round comes mostly from its velocity (small light bullet means that if you want it to do damage, it needs to be going FAST). And to effectively suppress it, you need to remove a lot of that velocity. So youre severely neutering the round.
Good to have a video now demonstrating that! Thanks Hickok
Well with 9mm it's not going that much faster thsn the speed of sound to begin with so mske ut subsonic won't take too much from the velocity but I get where you're coming from. i
Even with supersonic rounds a suppressor still makes shooting .223 WAY nicer. Especially when you cut the barrel down to 10-12 inches.
"Severely neutering" I have to steal that from you that's great
Problem is u just can’t get enough projectile weight to cycle the bolt and still be subsonic. That’s why 300bo was created it’s the most simple solution. In a 223 I think 90grain is the max weight but u cut the case short neck it to .308 and then u can shoot 225 grain projectiles in a ar15 and they’ll cycle. But even with that once below 190 grain it gets difficult to cycle the bolt at subsonic speeds.
I really appreciate the fact you come on and try and give an honest review of these weapons and ammo. You don't sugarcoat things, you just tell it like it is. Thanks
I always see comments referencing that a 223 subsonic is basically a .22 LR, it sounds ridiculous but after seeing this video, it's crystal clear, excellent demonstration, thank you!! For this reason, I'll be converting my AR-15 upper to 300 blackout.
Sir, I've come to rely on you for the straight truth when it comes to firearms. Your channel is a fantastic resource and I just wanted you to know that I greatly appreciate the work you put into your videos. Thank you Tim White, Aberdeen, MS
There's something about the old guys at the range... they tend to be some of the best shots at the range, maybe not as good as they were in their prime, but they are knowledgeable, wise, and really have the best information. Not only do they have the knowledge, but they communicate that knowledge most effectively. I learn more about the weapon and the skill, but i also learn a lot about teaching and communicating... i wish i could talk like they do. Theres just something special and charismatic about it, it makes it so much more fun, interesting and enjoyable.
You are right about the limited use, and for those limited uses, I love subsonic .223, but I would not love it if I had to pay off-the-shelf prices for it. If I have a suppressed AR in the field I always bring one, clearly marked, magazine of subsonic for varmints. A magazine is easier to carry than a separate .22lr with its own suppressor, or a separate .22lr upper and its magazines. An AR, functioning like a straight-pull bolt-action, is no different than working a Blaser R8 or a Swiss K31, and because there is no action noise they run "Hollywood quiet". I load my own .223 subsonic with either 75gr BTHP or 85gr Barnes Matchburners to about 1050 f.p.s., so I am looking at 184 to 208 foot-pounds of energy, which is about twice that of a subsonic .22lr, and better than 380acp from a carry pistol. With a standard military 1 in 7" twist, these heavy projectiles stabilize quite well, and have a higher ballistic coefficient, therefore more retained velocity and less drop than any .22lr, and at about 25 cents total per complete round cost to load them myself with bulk 75gr, I don't worry about price.
As you know, velocity defeats steel, and momentum penetrates flesh. For anything up to coyote size, subsonic .223 is perfect, and doesn't disturb the farm animals grazing in the field, or warn feral hogs of your presence. When you need 1200 foot-pounds of energy for hog control, just change magazines. Of course, be sure you know the drop for each dot on your scope with both rounds.
Yup video game guns definitely use subsonic ammo when suppressed. That's why they do less damage as well.
but it's still doesn't explained why the shooter didn't chambered the gun on subsonic bullets beforehand
oh yea, it's video games's logic after all
Grip Runner 420 Video games also retain ammo in dropped mags that magically moves into their other mags

Great lesson on subsonic ammo. I find it difficult to justify subsonic 556 as it becomes single action 22LR as you suggested. This is why I'm experimenting with subsonic on my Mini 30 7.62X39 and 180 grian and 200 grain bullets.
I think subsonic is better suited to shorter distances and heavier bullets in larger calibers ie>30cal 100fps and < 150 yards
Keep up the great work!
So glad to hear someone bring science in. Not a lot of people explain the bang is the bullet breaking the sound barrier
The AR 15 is a surgical tool. I thank you there Hickok45 for the lesson. And I appreciate your candor in the matter.

Accidently fired a 357 mag indoors 🤦🏽♂️ ears wrung for 3 days
Same! accidentally fired my 12 gauge Mossberg inside... Took me awhile to realize wth just happened. Ears ringing, room spinning :(
Fired 4 shots in the cab of my big rig in Dallas Texas. Only heard the first one, the other three could feel the pressure waves. That was a bad night. Stay safe and carry on.
Timothy King what caliber?

I feel like the sound was really good in this, like you can almost appreciate how loud they are because and a lot of videos the mic just peaks
When I grew up, There was never such over emphasis on the need for hearing protection. Hearing protection, safety goggles, helmets, seatbelts you name it, most of us in the sales never went there, and we're still alive, even after riding in the back of pick up trucks was ice cream cones. I love the way you do this you make perfect sense!!
I must add, if this guy was my grandpa I would move out of my mom and dad's house😂😂😂
For the guys who love the science.. A standard 40 grain CCI mini-mag .22LR, as shown here, is traveling at about 1250ft/s. I found on the internet a company named Allegiance Ammunition who boasts subsonic .223 weighing 100 grains traveling at 915ft/s. Also, for comparison, I pulled a standard .22 magnum round to weigh in at 40 grains and traveling conservatively at 2000ft/s. The maths are quite simple here. The energy of these bullets is just measured in kinetic energy (for simplicity here) which is just half of the mass times the square velocity. After simple unit analysis, the standard .22LR comes in at 135 ftlbf of energy while the .223 subsonic comes in at 186 ftlbf of energy, and the .22 magnum comes in at a whopping 392 ftlbf of energy. Essentially, the .22 magnum carries twice the amount of energy of these tiny little subsonic .223. To put into perspective, the respective magnitudes of energy of the .22LR, .223 sub, .22 mag could only raise the temperature of 1 gram of water at 1 atm a miniscule 44, 52, and 130 degrees celsius. If you made it this far, you must love physics and or thermodynamics as much as me haha. Hope you get to see this, Hickok!
When I was in the USMC, my .308 sniper rifle had a silencer, but we still used full/High Velocity ammo. The idea was not to completely silence the round, rather to muffle the blast so the enemy could not hear exactly where we were shooting from. The round still made a loud sonic streak but it was more difficult to hear exactly where the shot came from. I could point my rifle at the ground next to me and shoot it, with almost No Sound, because the Blast was silenced. The only sound I heard when shooting at the ground is the sound of the Bolt sliding back and forth, just like when you chamber a round. Also, A silencer will suppress the Muzzle Fire Flash which also helps keep your position hidden. Staying hidden is essential for a sniper to be successful.
E (kin)
2 times the mass = 2 times the energy
2 times the speed = 4 times the energy
Yep, velocity in the kinetic energy equation is squared
Yeah, ∆E=int(0,v, f(v)=mv)dv

Great Info…. I was thinking of getting a suppressor for my AR but think I’ll just get a 22 LR instead.
I have a military disability rating for the hearing loss and tinnitus (pronounced tin'-ih-tus, not tin-eye'-tus) which is ringing in the ears thanks to weapons fire and explosions from being a munitions systems specialist and working with F16s and F4s... To mitigate any further loss (I actually still hear pretty well overall) I wear plugs underneath my headset. It's a very big improvement and since I shoot a lot of .45, it's a big eeal. Long story short... double up ur hearing protection and don't subject urself to extended decibels like concerts or range shooting. it's less convenient and "wimpy" but ull hear for a long time to come.
Actually it is pronounced both ways.
Ran Stu
No, actually, there is the correct way and the common way.
Just because a lot of people say something incorrectly doesn't make it right.
Yeah I'm with you. Was fine with just the headset till someone brought a .44 to the lane right by the wall. Not sure if the sound bouncing was what did it but my ears started ringing. I double up now.
My audiologist specifically told me I have tin eye tus. I think he would know.
Terry Waters Hello...
I get it. There is more than one currently accepted pronunciation. But...
But I have a dictionary, my medical specialists to include audiology, a parent with 40+ yrs as a medical professional (degreed, not a med tech), and a wife with an English degree who all say it's tinn ih tus.. I know it's commonly said eye.
And I know marine biologists who don't know the plural of octopus is octopi. Not "octopuses."
But you'd never know it to listen to the "professionals" on TV. Smart doesn't always mean right.
Any word with a Greek origin (virus, etc. ... ending in "us" in the plural ends in "i", not "uses."
This is just a general comment that too much of the English language is being tought/changed by people who aren't proficient in it in the first place.
For the current example,
Tinnitus, as does the word "tinning," .. to tin something, has two Ns. One n is "eye," two is "in."
This all wasn't intended to start a lingual civil war but just to make a point.
Today, more of the improper is accepted as correct as general education is becoming more hearsay and less of long established fact. Pick up any old (like 40 years or more) dictionary and see how words have changed spelling and meaning in the last 20-30 years after being the same for over 100. Grammar is almost a thing of the past.
As the quality and ideology of education changes in this country, so does our direction as a society.
it's interesting to think about.
Thanks for the comment, people don't engage enough here. They just take pot shots at each other.

Love your videos. Totally agree that you’ve turned your rifle into a .22. I fail to see the need for something like this. Even CCI Stinger ammo for 22lr breaks the sound barrier.

Great video! I didn't know that 223 would be so neutered when subsonic. Sounds like a 300 blackout is a better option
The Suburban Patriot yes, I believe the 300 blackout was made to be supressed, lower velocity but still with significant terminal energy.
rajparmarman The biggest difference is the mass of the bullet used. There is a limit to how heavy you can make (and get) .22 caliber bullets in. However, .30 caliber bullets are significantly heavier. Most .300BLK subsonic rounds are 200gr. or heavier bullets, whereas the heaviest .22 caliber bullet you can get is going to be about 80gr. So, both bullets would travel at the same speed (about 1000fps), but the .300BLK is carrying over twice the mass.
The Suburban Patriot Ballistically the 300 Blackout is just a glorified 7.62x39.
+BadWolf762 your point is?
9x39 is the best
Love the content. It should be noted that the 5.56 is capable of slinging lead at over 100 grains at subsonic speeds. So that would be one advantage over the 22lr. But I see his point.
Check out Aguila Ammo "Sniper 22"... 64gr 22lr... my wife didn't believe I actually shot... the case hilariously looks like a 22 short. But it carries enough inertia to shoot squirrels and rabbits out to about 50yds... the shift of POA-POI (point of aim- impact) compared to std velocity is about a foot! A little range time and a BDC reticle will get lead on fur! 😆
Unfortunately with subsonic ammo you lose a lot of power. Might as well use naturally slower rounds like 45 for subsonic use.
Sounds like the kinda stuff feds can rely on to deal with minor nuisances.
I like how raw the videos are. He could have recorded another take after he dropped the mag but he didn't. Great video

@@Anthanos89 What about now?
1,050 fps 55 gr FMJ .223 might be pretty close to 1,050 40 gr lead .22lr but 75 gr BTHP at 1,050 fps should be significantly more powerful.
utbdhr
In fact the relative energies are; 98fpe for the 40 gr .22 vs 184fpe for the 75 gr .223. Better yet, 85 gr Barnes Match Burners load to magazine length in a .223 and have 208fpe at 1,050 fps. So if double or more is significant, then yes. Atomic makes an expensive, cycling 112 gr .223 with 274fpe. For those interested in comparisons, that's more energy than you get in every kid's favorite, the MP5SD. So, with nothing more than a mag change, you go from 274fpe to 1274fpe in a .223. Try that with an MP5SD. I am constantly amazed by a lack of math skills among the general populace.
I subscribed to your channel. Quality videos.
A waist of energy and time.
Subsonic 223 is HORRIBLE regardless...atleast get a 300 blackout, or hopefully a 458socom,or 500 Beowulf instead of a subsonic 223, which is essentially weaker than a 22 mag, even if it was shooting the 77 grain at 1,050 ft/s, a 22mag can do 1600ft/s with a 50, which means more power for the 22mag
If you want to suppress your AR, just get a 300 blackout barrel.
Will this really work

And pick subsonic ammo. Supersonic ammo is crazy loud still.
Yea buddy! Not an owner yet, but that's gonna be the first thing I do.
You summed it up very well but like everything in life, experiencing it firsthand is paramount. I bought a suppressor that would handle my 9mm. 22Lr and 223/556. I have 9 in subsonic but rarely use it. I never bought 223/556 in subsonic for the reason you talked about in the video. I mainly use my AR in 22Lr and the can for plinking, it's like a BB gun on steroids, fun, fun, fun. But liking subsonic so much I got a 300Bk out and can for it, the perfect marriage. I guess like a fisherman, he has more than one lure in his tackle box.

223 Subsonic 55 grains @ 1050 FPS = 135 lbs energy
22 LR standard load 40 grains @ 1250 FPS = 138 lbs enegy
Ric plenty to kill if shot in the heart
i was out by 15 FPS
center fire is more reliable then rimfire this is the advantage it has i think , bolt action subsonic 223 would be more reliable than a bolt action .22 and the bullet wouldn't go too far in a home defense situation

Not confusing at all Hickok. Very interesting topic. Thank you from Bonnie Scotland. 👍🏼
45 cap is subsonic ammo always subsonic in 223 is a 22lr subsonic but a 300 blackout subsonic is like a glorified suppressed 45 carbine in a rifle "punch" is delivered by bullet wheight not velocity at long ranges. Greatly envoy your vids 👌 always spot on.
I love how many casings you walk thru 🤣🤣🤣 I'm jealous
This is why I bought a 300 blackout for my coyote gun. Subsonic ar that will actually cycle and actually do damage. A vecter in 45acp is also nice. Standard ammo is subsonic already so 45 is 45
To the pointed question of why you would want to suppress 5.56 below subsonic... show me where you can buy 22 rimfire with a steel penetrator. You may not be using an autoloader, but a bolt action.. some police forces use 5.56 bolt action for their SWAT snipers. Options, it's all about options.
Hmm interesting idea. I thought that it might be cheaper to use a subsonic .223 Remington than buying the .22 lr.
I have not done the math, but it should be interesting to look into. The the .223 Remington case is more reliable to feed from a double and single stack magazine, yet it weights more and takes up more space.
I made some subsonic .223 ammo using Trail Boss powder, experimenting with bullet weights and charges. Bullet weights from 40 up to 77gr, and powder charges of 5 to 9 grains. FPS ranged from around 1,000 to 1,600 or so. For the most part they were good up to 50 to 100 yards, but some started to keyhole anything past that. I kept some of the better performing loads for instances that I want to take small game with my AR. These loads could also be used for training with failure to extract malfunctions, although of course you'll notice a difference in the report decibels. My stepfather got me into reloading, its actually rather therapeutic for the mind especially during long cold winters when I was still living in Vermont.
What twist rate?
@@AldoSchmedack 1/7, 5.56 chamber, barrel length was 16".
Why do I find this guy so respectable? Is it the grey hair, the moustache, the way he talks, his glasses? Or maybe the fact that he always has a gun lol
0:55 looked like a cartoon :)
(And then blaiming John completed it all lol. )
Oh god man this dude is the bob Ross of firearms. I love you dearly old man!!!!!
Hickok is like the Mr. Rodgers of Firearms
Stiff Mayonnaise Lol that’s actually a perfect description. He’s very comforting. I’d also watch if he had a whiskey tasting channel or something lol.
Great video and info Hickok45! You just saved me some money! Had never thought of the possibility that there wouldn't be enough power to work the action. Subsonic would be worthless for me because of that. Thanks!
I been searching for knowledge on how to suppress my 14.5 WELDED ar’s to use with a suppressor and now i see it’s not worth it. Thank you for saving my time and money. In urban environments/cqb a brake is a concussion so after seeing this I’m going the way of the 300 suppressed for my fighting rifles.
P = MV
4 g (5.56 bullet mass) * 1000 ft/s = 4000 g ft / s = 1.2192 m kg / s
3 g (.22 LR bullet mass) * 1200 ft/s = 3600 g ft / s = 1.09728 m kg / s
In conclusion:
You have about 11.33333...% more momentum with a subsonic 5.56 round than you do with a regular .22 LR round. Obviously in comparison to a regular 5.56 round you're getting much reduced returns on your momentum. In addition you have less effective range than the .22 LR due to the fact that the 5.56 is still at a lower velocity.
However that difference in momentum is not something to scoff at. The subsonic 5.56 would still be better at doing damage to an unarmored target than the .22 LR.
Regardless of this, if you're going to be shooting subsonic ammo the 5.56 isn't really what you want to be shooting, 5.56 really wasn't made to be shot subsonic. a .50 BMG round would be much more effective at the same range due to the fact that it has something around 10.5 times the mass of a 5.56.
You must be fun at parties
Like a lime I am.
overdonenames I think tnoutdoors9 should take this out to his backyard and so some testing!
Like a lime He doesn't get the joke.... lol
chefdan87 No I don't... Enlighten me.
In 100 years someone will go across the Hicks range field and think they hit a battlefield
They'll find a mass grave of propane tanks.
.223 subsonic is EXPENSIVE. 80¢ per round and up. Go with the HP .22 mini-mag or stinger any day.
build your own with cast. under $0.10/round in Canada.
Great to live in a free state, hope it stays that way, any given Saturday you can hear people shooting everywhere out here, it's comforting
I started shooting .22 in the late '50s, centerfire and shotguns in the '60s, and a
.38 revolver in the '70s. No one was using hearing protection. Was shooting +P out of the .38 next to a wall in 1980. Afterwards, I noticed my ears were ringing, and still are 36 years later. Also have telephone grade ears: 400-4000 Hz. Used hearing protection religiously since that day in 1980.
Another practical reason why you would need a suppressed AR-15 would be in a home defense scenario. If someone were to break into your house in the middle of the night you would not want to wear or have time for hearing protection. Without the suppressor the 5.56 shot in a closed environment would be incredibly painful and possible cause permanent damage to yourself. Therefore it would be highly advised to use a suppressor on your AR-15 if you use it for home defense.
Home defense....? I'm not concerned about my hearing (anybody's) in a situation like that.
razz339 doing it a few times wouldnt cause too much damage as the human bodt is resilient
In a home defense scenario, my hearing is important for communicating with law enforcement but the biggest reason to use a suppressor on an AR15 is to suppress the flash. In the dark, indoors, the flash from an AR15 would be disorienting and would make it harder to get accurate follow-up shots.
I may not completely agree with your statement, but I definitely agree that suppressed weapons are ideal for home situations. I’m sure certain military/ law enforcement teams would agree.
Never know when your hearing could help you in a home defense or any defense scenario. I do know I hate the ringing that comes with shooting unprotected. Lasts for days sometimes..
Hickok, through out your life time, have you gotten any hearing damage? I am 26 years old, and had faulty hearing protection on an indoor range one day, and my ears went numb. I wasn't sure what was going on, but I couldn't hear anything and my ear plugs were making my ear canal itch very badly. So, I took them out and spent another 20minutes on the range.
I now have a permanent ringing in my ear =[
It isn't as bad as it was 4 years ago, but I still sometimes need to put on some background noise while in bed at night.
DBproductions Huh? Actually, nothing serious. I hear a little ringing or crickets, I guess, but that's to be expected after 50 years of shooting. I was not as good about always using ear protection when I was younger.
DBproductions I'm 26 as well and blew an ear drum at a concert. I hear ringing all the time now and actually my inner ear twitches and spasms at high pitch sounds and some low frequencies. I say go see a doctor about it just to see if there's anything you can do to mitigate the damage.
DBproductions I've experienced a similar issue. I know people who regularly shoot without ears (country area) and they seems to have no issue. I've taken two shots without ears and a handful of shots with my ears not properly seated. I now experience a varying degree of ringing at all times and I'm 24 with otherwise very good hearing.
In most of his videos, hickok is putting himself in the best position to keep his hearing, shooting outdoors in an open area and wearing hearing protection. What damages your ears is the pressure wave that carries sound. Hearing protection more than anything else, blocks the airflow to your inner ear. Having a bad seal or no hearing protection will allow the pressure wave that is the sound of a gunshot to travel to and damage the sensitive mechanisms of your hearing. This is especially true if you are shooting in an enclosed space or anywhere the pressure wave might be reflected back at you such as an outdoor range that has a roof.
X The Manimal You can have a surgery. They'll put another ear drum there and will help with the tinnitus(the ringing sound). Personally I have the same problem.
When you're shooting sub sonic, you need a heavier bullet for carry through at lower velocity, such as 300 blackout. And just as I say that he says the same thing XD
You ARE a scientist, my favorite scientist. you had a question and through scientific method you answered it, it dosent get much more scientist like than that.
I'm watching your playlist called "Basics" and must say it's absolutely outstanding. Great teacher, great information and just overall really fun videos. Kudos on your outstanding videos kind sir!
The kinetic energy is equal to 1/2 the product of the mass and the square of the speed, therefore in order to get something that hits hard but stays under the sound barrier, we need to increase the mass of the projectile hugely.
Stupid question can you do a video about open carry and maybe some of the laws that go with it?
Gregory Redington Every state is different.
Well I am from kentucky and you joke about us all the time but I understand and thank you for getting back to me.
hickok45 God bless "States Rights", or we would be in trouble with our gun rights. Thank you from Texas.
+Gregory Redington Hickok45 doesn't get into politics, his channel is about having fun, part of the reason why I love him.
open carrying is dangerous, even in the states where it's legal. A crazy woman just has to get pissed off because she doesn't know the laws then call the cops and say you threatened her and then you'll be charge with a felony, thrown in jail, and have your gun thrown into inspection and your car impounded costing you thousands of dollars.
6:39 I thought that it was a pellet rifle that’s how quiet it was
Your an idiot if you actually believed that
Your an idiot if you actually believed that
I've watched many gun video's and you tutorial have to be one of the most well explained and friendly of the others.. Good Job.
Great point about bullet weight and getting the most out of your subsonic round. I like 22lr subsonic 60gr "heavy" rounds in my lever action Browning BL22. Quiet and cycles with the lever.
did yall hear someone yelling at 5:41
sounds more like a car horn
I dropped my slice of pizza and howled at the universe in contempt
if I didn't live in Communfornia, I would definitely buy a suppressor for my 10/22--and probably use one on my ar occasionally to reduce the noise a bit; but why on Earth--or any other planet for that matter--would you buy subsonic 223/5.56 ammunition? the velocity is the entire point behind the cartridge design of the 223/5.56. idk, in my opinion, if I wanted to shoot my ar completely suppressed with subsonic ammo--I would just pull out my 10/22 and suppress it.
Why is a suppressor illegal in California I'm from the UK so don't know your laws I would have thought making the rounds less powerful would be a good thing in the eyes of California ?
***** yeah, CA is very weird; they like to think that if everyone had suppressors people would automatically become "Hitmen," and every Californian would be killed in their sleep without ever knowing who did it. the black market in CA could be full of suppressors--but Law Abiding Citizens are NOT allowed to have them lol--I know, it makes no sense. and by nature a suppressor doesn't really make a round less powerful, it really just quiets the bullet down by quite a bit--which I have heard that in the UK they encourage the people to use suppressors as to not annoy neighbors of hunting grounds; is that true? I think hunting with a suppressor would be pretty interesting. I also heard that the UK doesn't overcharge for suppressors either--meaning, they are a lot more affordable over in the UK. Is that true as well?
CrysResan Trust me, it's not the People who live in the states--it's the politicians. I cant help where I was born, just like you had no say in the matter either. Very few people here in CA actually do their own research or even get out and vote. AND, usually the ones who don't do their own research in this state, if they did get out to vote, they would just vote Democratic anyways because Democrats like to use the words "Free Money." which anyone with more than a pea for a brain means taxpayer's money.
Oh I'm not blaming EVERYONE that lives in such places. However some of them are certainly to blame for electing such crooks and morons. There may well be some fraud involved too, hard to say, but some ordinary people are certainly to blame.
I wish more people were taught like I was when I was young, that there's no such thing as a free lunch, or free ANYTHING. Everything has a cost- be it money, time, effort, or blood everything costs something and people who say otherwise are the most untrustworthy of unscrupulous conniving liars.
CrysResan okay, just wanted to set the record straight because your first message sounded so ignorant and broad I was debating on even replying lol. Yes, absolutely NOTHING is Free; money to fund all these Free programs has to come from somewhere, and taxpayers are the only reliable resource the Government has--and they abuse the heck out of that fact.
I like my .45 ACP, a subsonic with clout.
I love getting a drink, a little snack. And sitting down and watching Hickok45
I really enjoy his video's. I have learned more from his channel than anything else. He actually doese honest reviews and non bias except for his glocks lol...sorry. Its relaxing to see old school at work.
10 round mag, welcome to canada (starts crying) I love my country but I absolutely hate our firearm laws. The only time I've even touched a 30+ round mag was in the military....Dont even get me started on our funding or lack thereof....=(
This is why I will NEVER own a silencer for a 223. It's not nearly quiet enough for the $1,000+ you have to spend on it. I'll get one for my .45 eventually, which makes sense since it's ridiculously quiet.
*****
I'm not reading that book of bullshit. You are just butthurt that you wasted money on a useless suppressor. My HK .45 with a suppressor will be more quiet than any suppressed 5.56 with normal ammo. If you use the subsonic ammo, you lose the biggest reason to use a 5.56; velocity.
300BLK came out for a reason. At least I can use any regular ammo and use a suppressor effectively. My gun is just as lethal with or without a suppressor, while it will neuter yours.
*****
I'm done wasting my valuable time arguing with a delusional moron. Enjoy your glorified .22LR rifle.
+TheGoldenSaber well when u are out hunting you usually dont wear any ear protection, so a supressor will reduce the damage to your or your hunting buddys ears ;)even with regular ammo it still supresses the sound a great deal even if its not silent
the point of the suppressor is to contain the expanding gasses, thereby reducing the noise. A suppressor on a .223 will reduce the sound, but there are two components to the noise of a gunshot: expanding gasses and breaking the sound barrier.
side note: you can build a baffle-style suppressor for about $180, plus the $200 tax stamp, but it won't be as effective as a $1000 one. it'll still help, though.
if you have a threaded barrel buy a adapter build a can or oil filter if you just plan to have it put away or own alot a land you can shoot it on
Subsonic .223 . . . isn't that standard velocity .22 LR?
That's what the video talks about, smart guy...
Thanks for another great informative presentation.I woke up alive this morning, everything else is a bonus, yes life IS good.
Life is good. Thank you for that explanation. Went out last week and that explains a lot.
Un Nivel De Geometry Dash Así Se Llama También!
There something about an AR not functioning makes me literally feel sick. Weird
Where did you play a scientist on TV. And what TV show.
It's a joke, he just means TH-cam videos he breaks things down enough that he is suggesting he's playing a pretend Scientist. lol
He played in strain 100 with a few other you tubers
I like how 22lr is always presented as the teeny weeny kid round and 5.56 is a BIIG AR15 ROUND but really 556 is just .003 inches bigger. Great vid!
It’s more the fact the .22lr has a much lower velocity
@@9000888sora yea i know but besides that, the size difference of the actual projectile is surprisingly small
Years ago in Iceland hunters would create holes in the ice and stand in dead silence waiting for hours for seals to surface. The report of the rifle and its shock to the human ears had them all suffering hearing loss while still in their teens. Hickock45 is smart to use his "ears" when he shoots.
you had said you played a scientist on TV before? 10:40
Velocity = Noise
Wrong,,think again,,,,🤔
Reinventing the 22LR....Pointless and more expensive!!
Great video!! You do such a great job on the knowledge on all the toys you have. Thanks hickock 45👍
Hickok can explain physics and make it sound simple.
