    It's great to see Stern Defense taking issues into consideration and to make steps ALREADY to change them for the better. They saw this comment section and the thoughts of the viewers, and have already lowered their price a little, as well as making a stronger Mag Release for the unit, hopefully that version will be available soon. In the end we are all apart of the Firearms Community and it's great to see a company putting in effort to make the best product they can!

      Our improved mag latch is now available! We have re-engineered the mag release to be flush with the mag well so it cannot be hit or caught on anything. Also, we have upgraded the material to 4140 alloy steel which has a very high yield and tensil strength.

    I know my comments are coming more than four years after you posted this video, but I can almost guarantee your last round hold-open failures weren't the fault of the Stern unit. I'd bet it was the magazine followers. I've been running the hell out of two of those Stern AD9 conversion units for two years, and the only time I have a failure of the bolt closing after the last round is when I'm using genuine Glock magazines! And of the dozens of Glock mags I have, it's only three or four that give me this problem. I have more than 60 KCI Korean-made 33-round mags and they work perfectly. I'm speaking heresy here, but I'm not at all fond of Magpul's 17-round mags. They swell up when fully loaded and spend an afternoon in the trunk of my car during the summertime, and they aren't as "perfect" as most people think Magpul mags are. In fact, I have had flawless experiences with ProMag magazines, which I widely disparaged as junk. I'll say this: they're more like genuine Glock mags than are the pure polymer boxes MagPul produces. They are entirely metal internally, just like the real McCoy.
    I loved your video, overall. I just wanted to point out your issue as being mag-related. I've built dozens and dozens of AR rifles and pistols, and nowadays, I don't even think about building a 9mm version with a dedicated lower receiver. Stern's device is so well engineered and built, and so rock solid reliable, I can't see sacrificing the versatility of the lower receiver assembly by limiting it to a pistol caliber only carbine (or pistol).
    My two favorites both sport stainless barrels from Odin Works. A 10" version which milks every bit of ballistic juice you can wring out of the 9mm Parabellum cartridge, and a slightly shorter 8-inch barrel that provides more overall compactness, while still giving the 9mm round a ballistic boost you get with a longer than conventional barrel. With a KAW Industries "sound forwarder" on both, they come across as being suppressed once the inside of the muzzle devices are allowed to become caked with carbon residue. My 10-inch pistol is actually quieter than my 18" barreled Ruger 10/22 rifle! And that's using a 124 gr. Sierra bullet!

    I really love the concept first magwell insert I've seen that uses glock mags and not the old colt mags. But for $200 it is not what I thought, for $250 someone can buy a complete glock mag lower. Again love the design and idea, surprised no one has done this before now but the price point would have to come down to make it a feasible option instead of just building a complete dedicated PCC for $50-100 more.

    • @GY6vids
      @GY6vids  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was reading reviews on sylvan arms and stern defense adapter for my 9mm FTM upper. They ran holiday special on.sylvan for 120 and I tried it. When received it, it seemed a little loose in mag well and on a glock 17 mag it stove piped 3 times. I sent it back and got the stern defense for 179. The screw system locked it down tight in the magwell. Ran 17 rd glock clip with no problems and it had the last round hold. Even though little more I am glad I got the stern defense. It is worth the extra and don't have to worry about jams and look forward to fun shooting without frustration.

  • @gmen5280

    Does $190 shipped sound steep for an adapter? Sure. But if you think about the total cost of building out a dedicated decent Glock/Colt lower. You are going to drop $350-500 depending on lower brand and trigger choice. And if you want to SBR it, that is another $200+time. However, with this adapter you can drop it in to your current SBR lower with its top line trigger and your good to go with a 9mm upper. One way or another you are going to be spending some money to adapt or build a 9mm AR15. Now that cheap mag release is reason for pause. Will it be covered by warranty since it is known weak point with a high failure rate?

    Hey brother you probably have to move the 9mm magazine adapter further up into the Magwell of the AR-15 Lower to make it hold the last round fired open. It's probably not up in there for enough that's why you have all those set screws so you get it up in there far enough so in the magazine runs dry it will lift up the ping pong paddle the bolt stop. Hope it helps brother

    • @GY6vids

    Quick question ... I'm looking to get into the 9mm ar game. I thought 9mm needs a proprietary buffer? Yes? No? Whats the deal?
    As far as mag snappy goes, make the release out of steal. Problem solved. Sure, it will add an insignificant amount of weight but much better then having your mag release snapping off.

    im gonna be doing this soon because for competitions i cant shoot .556

  • @oneer8435
    @oneer8435 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Easy solution, you need a sub machine gun , buy one. Anytime you try to use add ons to a different Cal. It always screws up , which is understandable to me. The only reason you would need to go from 556 to 9mm is to do some major room clearing. And that can be done with 556. Thanks for the vid, interesting.

      depends on if you put it on a "featureless" AR rifle, and use only 10round magazines.

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even for CA it doesn't make a difference. 9mm uppers can easily be bought, a 9mm lower can be easily made from scratch, or a colt SMG style magwell conversion can be pinned into a standard rifle lower. Plus Colt SMG style magazines are more likely to be found in CA "illegally" since they can easily be stamped from sheet metal or folded from thermoplastic in comparison to glock magazines that have unnecessarily complex geometry for a home builder.

      Because my lower already has a tax stamp. If I were to buy a complete new dedicated lower I would have to make it an AR pistol or purchase another tax stamp
