Ahh centrifugal superchargers... all the lack of power in the bottom end from a turbo, and all the runoff at the top end of a supercharger... the worst of both worlds. but you do still get more power.
They also plan to run the same amount of boost, so both cars will run out of breath up top more than likely, I don't think they will be tunning 18lbs, probably more like 8 or 10 lol! But a roots type would've been better imo, instant powaaaa!!! Rather than the centrifugal which I have always viewed as a turbo thats just been modified to run off of belt and pulleys. Lol. Still, its boosted though!!
Centrifugal blower will always make more low end power than a turbo (if everything is equal) Turbos are an exhaust restriction and actually rob power until they spool up. Supercharger robs power from the crank - however the boost is ALWAYS more than enough to compensate for the parasitic loss. Also these superchargers are able to be "geared" via pulley size to spin up faster and provide more boost. There's a reason why the fastest street cars (drag racing) have a centrifugal if they are not running turbos. They are also lighter than the twin screw type, and can produce more peak boost. I would rather have a centrifugal than a roots blower. Having a monster blower sitting on top of the engine is pretty rad though, and being able to run a top fuel style scoop with individual butterfly valves is another huge win. More power from a smaller package. That's what the ladies like.

Tests Supercharger vs Turbo...gets centrifugal supercharger. Way to go guys. Why pick the absolute worst supercharger model of all for this particular engine and car? A centrifugal is much more suited to bigger engines that already have strong low end torque, whereas a screw type would give the Miata an extremely powerful and more useful push in the low revs where this engine makes very low power. At the cost of efficiency obviously.
It depends on what you are after. Roots or screw type superchargers produce way more torque at low RPMs than centrifugal, whereas the centrifugal works more like a turbo and is weaker down low and has more high end power. At least that's what I've been told. I may be wrong, but it just felt weird for them to pick a supercharger type that is basically just a belt driven turbo.
I would never trade my whine for a whoosh. Just personal preference. Miatas also benefit a lot more from low end torque than high end power. They're pathetic down low.

I put a Flyin Miata Turbo kit in my NA8 two months ago. Full kit including the intercooler. No Fabrication required. Every part fit perfectly. You get what you pay for.
They said that they didn't do the build in that video. They also said that they will show the turbo one on camera because it is the more interesting build. Not that much bias.
I'm a supercharger fan much simpler you don't have to run a special manifold and extra tubing in the engine bay nor have an intercooler or an oil line also super chargers don't have any lag. A roots supercharger is even simpler it just bolts on in place of the manifold
I get what you're saying but you just sort of invalidated that first point about the manifold with the last one. I get it, turbo setups are slightly more complex but realistically if your going forced induction with your car running oil and maybe water lines are probably the least of your worries.

lenny 034 if you look at around 8:55 they remove the downpipe (which I guess they call dump pipe) which has the cat. It is replaced by a test pipe. I want to know if the turboed NB has a similar exhaust with a cat and a muffler.
Hi Kyle, The dump "waste gate" on a turbo charger re-directs exhaust gas to bypass the turbine wich reduces turbo drive/preasure and still needs to be exhausted through a CAT. Although high performance turbo systems still use "dump valves" on the compressor or inlet manifold side of the system this is clean air. The superchargers speed/preasure is mechanicaly locked to engine speed and therefore the inlet manifold preasure needs to be regulated by the "dump valve" alone.
+dean hood I'm fairly sure the dude just got confused and was talking about a downpipe mate. The downpipe they put in the turbo NB was a de-cat, he's asking if they either have or are going to de-cat the supercharged NB too.
People massively overestimate how much power the cat saps, you're looking at like 5kw at worst with a crap old early 90s style 2-way. What's of bigger concern is that they talk about comparing the 2 on the street... With no cat. Hope the boys enjoy their $10k fines.
Not all centrifugal superchargers are prochargers in a similar way as not all vaccuums are hoovers. However, procharged seems to be a bit less common than hoover

It will be an interesting comparison. A procharger is the easiest forced induction modification you can do to your car generally, while a turbo is one of the hardest to install because of the exhaust fabrication. The procharger loses the explosive low rpm power of the roots supercharger but besides that it's a solid forced induction setup. I think the main difference might be boost delivery. The turbo miata will surge in power as the turbo spools up to operating speed, while the procharged miata will have a more linear and responsive power delivery since the turbo stays spooled up with the engine always.
So it's a belt driven turbine. Really cool but not really a supercharger other than it's belt driven. Traditional superchargers don't have the same mechanics for forcing air as a turbo with impellers and turbines. A supercharger has two threaded roller pins that mesh together to force air. Witch I'm sure you guy's know. The funny thing is traditional superchargers don't give a lot of boost. Heard of 4lbs to 12lbs. Plus they rob horse power and and more friction on the motor to gain the extra power. So I don't think this is a really true versus shot out battle as what your calling it. This is more accurately a battle of two different driven turbines. Get two LS V8's matching, HKS exhaust driven turbo vs Weiand belt driven supercharger. That would be more accurate. Love your show. besides you have cold side.. hot side.. I guess there are as many variants of S/C as there are with Turbo.. ON the mini they used fuel injector on the charger. thats always a bonus.
if its driven by the engine via a belt, then its a supercharger. this particular one is a belt driven centrifugal compressor, the ones you talk about are rotary screw compressors. Turbines are what harness the power of flow through air, gas, water etc to give drive to something else like a compressor wheel/generator/gearbox. turbines dont make power, they provide drive

You guys chose the wrong kind of supercharger. You should of used a roots type. With no long intercooler piping and much faster response. What you're doing is basically comparing a gear driven turbo vs exhaust driven turbo. Both with very similar characteristics. 😕😕😕

to my understanding isn't a centrifugal sc better than a roots sc? this is just what I've read off of forums, I honestly don't know.

I would just rotate the compressor housing on the turbo instead of grinding it to get turbo clearance.
But then the wastegate actuator has to be re-pinned and re-welded. :P

Absolutes are almost never correct. There are applications where a turbo is better than a supercharger, and applications where the opposite is true.
I prefer being able to run 30psi of boost on a 100mm turbo as compared to like 12-15 on a supercharger tbh
Preference is subjective. Like I said, there are applications where one shines and the other doesn't.

The superchargers speed/preasure is mechanicaly locked to engine speed and therefore the inlet manifold preasure needs to be regulated by the "dump valve" alone.
+dean hood I'm fairly sure the dude just got confused and was talking about a downpipe mate. The downpipe they put in the turbo NB was a de-cat, he's asking if they either have or are going to de-cat the supercharged NB too.
People massively overestimate how much power the cat saps, you're looking at like 5kw at worst with a crap old early 90s style 2-way.
What's of bigger concern is that they talk about comparing the 2 on the street...

Procharger is a brand, not a style of supercharger. Procharger build centrifugal superchargers.
Ther are many manufacturers that make centrifugal superchargers
It will be an interesting comparison. A procharger is the easiest forced induction modification you can do to your car generally, while a turbo is one of the hardest to install because of the exhaust fabrication.
The procharger loses the explosive low rpm power of the roots supercharger but besides that it's a solid forced induction setup. I think the main difference might be boost delivery. The turbo miata will surge in power as the turbo spools up to operating speed, while the procharged miata will have a more linear and responsive power delivery since the turbo stays spooled up with the engine always.

I've heard so many negative stories about nitrodann it's good to finally hear one good one.
So it's a belt driven turbine. Really cool but not really a supercharger other than it's belt driven. Traditional superchargers don't have the same mechanics for forcing air as a turbo with impellers and turbines. A supercharger has two threaded roller pins that mesh together to force air. Witch I'm sure you guy's know. The funny thing is traditional superchargers don't give a lot of boost. Heard of 4lbs to 12lbs. Plus they rob horse power and and more friction on the motor to gain the extra power. So I don't think this is a really true versus shot out battle as what your calling it. This is more accurately a battle of two different driven turbines. Get two LS V8's matching, HKS exhaust driven turbo vs Weiand belt driven supercharger. That would be more accurate. Love your show. besides you have cold side.. hot side.. I guess there are as many variants of S/C as there are with Turbo.. ON the mini they used fuel injector on the charger. thats always a bonus.
You realise that a "turbo" is actually a turbosupercharger. "Superchargers" come in two main variants, roots and centrifugal compressor type.
if its driven by the engine via a belt, then its a supercharger. this particular one is a belt driven centrifugal compressor, the ones you talk about are rotary screw compressors. Turbines are what harness the power of flow through air, gas, water etc to give drive to something else like a compressor wheel/generator/gearbox. turbines dont make power, they provide drive

MCM should start doing lifestyle vlogs. They have all of that cool stuff in that garage, and I'd love to see them doing stuff other than just the cars .They're just great personalities to watch with great chemistry.
You guys chose the wrong kind of supercharger. You should of used a roots type. With no long intercooler piping and much faster response. What you're doing is basically comparing a gear driven turbo vs exhaust driven turbo. Both with very similar characteristics. 😕😕😕
