Sorcery & Magic Throughout Game of Thrones History

  • In A Song of Ice and Fire, there are so many types of sorcery and magic that exist in Westeros, Essos, and beyond. Game of Thrones left out some of the most interesting magical lore from ASOIAF, such as Valyrian glass candles and Euron Greyjoy's shade-of-the-evening trips. In this video, I cover eight different categories of magic in ASOIAF / GoT, as well as some sorcerers who wield magic, like Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, Bloodraven, and more.

    I'm not convinced that the birth of the dragons so much brought magic back to the world, it always struck me as more likely that the return of magic allowed the long dormant egg's to hatch, and that it's slow ebbing is why the older generation of dragons grew stunted.

    • @Despairington
      @Despairington ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Even in D&D lore, dragons ARE magic. So this kind of sounds like a reference to that concept.

    • @JaayCeez
      @JaayCeez ปีที่แล้ว +42

      But then what? Magic just happened to return right when the dragons returned? How did it return all of a sudden? Why? What was the catalyst for magic to have a resurgence in the world? It can't just be because it did, that just makes for a lame plot point for everything that happens afterward.
      Something, or someone had to bring it back. It makes sense if it's tied into a character that is tied into a prophecy, rather than it just happening at a perfect time.

      @@JaayCeez My point was that the the dragons were successfully hatched because magic was growing stronger again, had this been a decade earlier then Danaris would just have burned to death and if the eggs hatched at all the baby dragons would have come out small sickly and deformed like the last of the dragons that her ancestors reared. Someone likely tried to hatch dragons every decade or so but history forgot them because nothing came of it.

    • @JaayCeez
      @JaayCeez ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @A-oti But the comet didn't, tho, and they never left, whereas the Dragons did, and magic seemed to had drastically depleted from the lands once they did.
      I can see The Others being responsible for keeping the magic flowing through the North. But if anything, I see The Others as part of the same coin as The Dragons. Both natural forces of magic in the world, and both keep each other from overtaking the world. Much like the song, and much like fire and ice, the two centers of magic in the world tend to go back to dragons and the others' magic they use. Which we technically still don't know if it's their own magic or if it's a forgotten magic deep beneath the ice of the northern hemisphere.

    A note about the dragon dreams. It’s implied that they’re either exclusive to the Targaryens, or that the Targaryens have an unusual concentration of dreamers. Hence why they were the only dragon lords to escape Valyria before the doom

    It's so cool to see the magic we see classified! I kind of thought that all strong magic is partly or wholly blood magic. So, greenseing and green dreams (or fever dreams for characters that lay to sleep on wierwoods stumps) happen due to blood sacrifices to weirwood/old gods, dragon dreams bc the Dragon lords connected their blood with dragons through blood magic, the skin changing happens due to some blood bonding between the children of the forest and starks/first men, melisandre sees future in the flames through burning king's blood, etc.

    I've got a theory about the magic returning.
    Is magic coming back to the world because of the dragons, or was dany able to hatch dragons because the others started coming back first? The others and the long night started happening before Dany's dragons hatched and maybe magic is returning to combat the others.

    • @bloodangel19

      Maybe it also has to do with the end of summer and the beginning of winter? It’s a common belief that sorcery or spirits (ghosts, demons etc) cause an aura of cold temperatures around them. Maybe in the world of ASOIAF, the long summer is followed by an equally long winter, which isn’t caused by seasonal climate change, but rather a global ‘haunting’ of the entire globe with spirits/magic? Thus producing a cold aura across the entire planet, and an increase of magic everywhere.

    The biggest glamor is unfortunately the mystical book the winds of winter and how far it truly is in its completion. If he had a problem with wanting to scrap and start again maybe entrust it to secret editors that would edit and secure its existence. Once he had enough he could release them as parts of the same mythical yarn, ensuring it's readers and yet nearing a sense of accomplishment versus what we truly have years upon years of empty promises.

    Not gonna lie, I've found it odd that none of the Targaryens we know of, even the ones pre-conquest, were ever Fire Mages, or Fire Priests.
    Like, none of them took interest in these fire powers, despite the fact that having the Blood of the Dragon would, logically, be a big aid in channeling flames. And the fact that Targaryens (Valyrians in general) can handle higher temperatures than the other races like the First Men or Andals would also be a decent crutch to stand on.
    If Dany's 3 young Dragons helped boost magic into the world again, imagine if the likes of Aemond and Daemon ever took interest in worshipping (or at least studying) the ways of R'hllor, the Lord of Light. Or just studying with Pyromancers or Fire Mages in Essos or something.

      Valerian Steel and the Red Keep are probably examples of highly advanced Alchemy as there's little difference other then the process of a liquid made with magical properties and a metal with magical properties. Also maybe there's a tie between Valerian Steel and fire magic tied to Old Valyria and all the volcanos. What I'm saying is maybe the magic and all the volcanos made valerian steel naturally appear in the Earth rather then something that's made by humans

    What do you feel will be Arya's book future, my justification now for the show's Arya path is that the Faceless Men thru worship of all the gods and Death plus incorporating the lives and exhistence of the people whoe faces they cull gives them magic sight as well into future past connections and the avatar FM wearing Jaquin Hagar as prisoner was on his way to end up part of the future army to fight the Dead and Night King who steals the dead from the God of Death not just the living from the Light/Life Gods. Jaquin Hagar Meeting Arya who as a 1st Man & warg descendant perceive her as a potential follower to add to the end fight to stop the Night King and the Dead army in honor of the God of Death retoring the balance of Life protectors Jon, Jaime, Brienne, Lord Barric, Thoros fighting for the living while Faceless Men fight FOR THE DEAD who are part of the way of life cycle. Ergo IMHO the GoT writer's choice to then use ARYA as the final one out of many to do THE DEED especially as they had the Valyrian dagger meme have Bran give it to her as he could see the future WAS VALID and poetic.

    Blood magic is all about sacrifice, and I think that's the terrible secret to what happened at Summerhall. Aegon V and his pyromancers had researched all remaining Valyrian dargon lore, magic, etc and worked out that it wasn’t just fire and blood that was needed but a blood sacrifice of someone that was beloved to the caster. The greater the sacrifice the greater the reward.
    The legend of Azor Ahai and Nisa Nisa practically spells it out explicitly and Daenerys's sacrifice not just of Miri Mazdur but of Khal Drogo, and in a round about way, her unborn son confirms it.
    Aegon called together his entire family, all of the blood of the dragon, and intended to sacrifice some of them as part of the ritual. Likely seven for the seven eggs he wished to hatch.
    Ser Duncan likely stopped him by releasing them. That's why the few that survived never spoke about what took plsce as Aegon V had been so beloved and everyone that was there was deeply traumatized.

      I think this video is assessing based on the wider book lore. In the books Pyat Pree is much more explicitly a conman and it seems like its The House Of The Undying that has some sort of magic placed over it, as opposed to Pyat Pree being magical. In the book I don't think Pyat Pree actually commits any magical feats, however the House of the Undying is unlike anything we've seen elsewhere in the world, using illusion magic to conjure up various visions, as well as disguising the fact that the 'Undying' are in fact a bunch of mangled corpses

      @Jeam Beam the show is lazy and dumb and probably writes it off as her just losing the will to live and her purpose. there's never a constant stream of blood sacrifices to fuel it, those are all done under different pretense, and since they mostly work there's no reason to doubt that.
      and in the books she gives mance a similar bracelet, which is how she gives him a disguise.

    Dragondreamers are said to be "rare and secretive" but I swear more than half the Targaryens are dragondreamers.

      It think it might have something to do with all the subsequent members of house Targaryan being decended from Deanys the Dreamer.
      Also, dragon dreams seem to get more prolific the closer to the coming of The Others and the Long Night, as well as after the dragons died out. My theory is that without dragons to bond to the inate magic in the Targaryan blood line began to express itself in other ways: both in prophetic dreams and in madness.

    If the 3eyed crow could see into the future, why wouldn't he see that trying to convert Euron was a bad idea and thus leave him to be where he was?
    Granted, the threat of Euron plays a role in the future of the world, so he was somewhat forced to open his eyes, but if the future was so concretely meant to be then why bother trying to do anything with anyone? It will happen whether he tries or not, right?

    Don't hold your breath. After Martin is not among us anymore, from notes and drafts, the ending will be delivered.
    I wonder who it'll be.
    20:16 Parlor tricks , not necromancy. The white walkers make zombies out of dead flesh, (Anita Blake echoes, Martin shamelessly stole from every fantasy series ever) but you kill the walker ,the zombies " die" again.
    Zombies do not stop, until the command imprinted in them by the magic that raised them is fulfilled. Kill the bokor , it wont save you. The bargain has been struck, the price paid, the zombie will deliver. it is not the bokor's power that moves it.
    Idiots the lot of them. Blood magic ?Do the fools even know what they invoke? The faceless men suspect, it why they refuse to take it upon them to share their gift.
    Life comes from death. Nothing exists , that something was nor murdered to make it so.
    Search the old tales about the creation of the world. The older the tale is, the bloodier.

    What's funny is that because Visenya was getting older and had no children, the men labeled her infertile and when she finally got pregnant... She's was labeled a witch...
    The history of incest in the Targaryen bloodline certainly has nothing to do with it, right? And Maegor being crazy is not due to the continuous incest, right?? RIGHT.

  • @daniell1483

    I'm not sure divination can show the future. The example used, Bran and Rickon "predicting" Eddard's death, doesn't really predict anything. Their dreams occur only a few hours before the raven reaches Winterfell, not Eddard's death itself. As for dragon dreams, many people who have no connection to dragons dream of them; both Tyrion and one of the Toland sisters admit to dreaming of dragons. Even among Valyrians, dragon dreams seem more like a form of psychosis than any kind of productive magic, such as Brightflame chugging wildfire, thinking this would turn him into a dragon (it just killed him).
    TLDR: Divination seems more easily explained as a form of telepathy (mind to mind communication) than a literal foretelling of the future; situations that are less clear cut like dragon dreams seem to just be dreams without anything magical about them.
