This game is new to a whole generation of players, and the OGs both, known and unknown, have stories to tell about this legendary title. Capcom Peaked with this one, Marvel 3 was cool and all, but this was the True Ultimate. If you could hang in this, you could do anything in fighting games.

I love watching high level MvC2 as much as anyone, but I do think it's funny how Max will talk about MvC2 or 3rd Strike or whatever old game as if they're unique in their skill ceiling. If you grinded any game for 20 years like these guys have, you'd be just as unbeatable. The main real difference with MvC2 is that skill is more visually apparent - tri-dashing around with Magneto looks sick. But if you grinded any game for 20 years like these guys have, you'd be just as unbeatable. Like, imagine someone practicing perfect parry in SF6 for 20 years. You wouldn't be able to touch them!

It kinda makes me sad as someone that likes Capcom but only really knows MCU up to Endgame. I was thinking about getting the collection to try MvC2, but realized that I can’t both play characters I think are cool and try to do the high level stuff I see. They’re mutually exclusive. I could try to juggle both and then just view the high tier characters as functions but at that point it seems more like a hassle. Even just watching high level play is kinda sad cause of that. At least I get to see the Capcom guys when Max plays though.
its funny too in the latest magneto arc in the comics, he literally got resurrected by storm and together they did a ultimate combo that blasted the shadow king (a cosmic level being) so mvc2 is kinda lore accurate
@@CyberBinary You know there are multiple X-Men movies, plenty of animated stuff and close to infinity comics you can enjoy to get acquainted with the characters, right? MCU is not going to do them justice anyways.

My problem is that there's a lot in MvC2 that I am interested in, especially on the Capcom side, and it's sad that stuff isn't used as often because it's such an uphill battle against the X-Men. From what I've seen of MvC2, you really have to "pick a top-tier" if you want to explore the depth of what the game provides. If someone isn't particularly interested in those characters, MvC2 kinda gives this sense of "why bother?" I have fond memories of playing the iPad version of MvC2 and playing to unlock characters and stuff. The fact there's "infinite potential" in the game isn't necessarily a fault, but the fact 90% of the cast doesn't have that "infinite potential" is what makes the game boring to me. It is cool you can do all that with MSP or MSS or Cable Sent Mags, but man would it have been a more interesting game if at least 50% of the roster also had that potential instead of just being a collection of jacked up hitboxes and functioning like a 3-limbed dog chained to a cinder block compared to the "god" characters.
I challenge your opinion (which you are entitled to)… you like the ‘concept’ of a balanced game. Not the game itself. Players like yourself are fundamentally casual, you drop games the minute you have to grind. MvC2 is ALL grinding. It comes down to the FGC that celebrates skill- the community respects the hours someone spent grinding. You have spent ZERO hours grinding, nor do you respect the grind. Therefore, your option gets ZERO respect. Especially when you would rather change the game (rebalance) or insult it, rather than invest in it.
@@larsonabilla5066 I never said the game needs to be perfectly balanced, and to say a Tekken/KI player doesn't grind or deal with BS is laughable. What I would have liked is for every character to have some stupid BS that works even if it isn't as good as the best characters (Tekken 5 DR or KI or UNI or Karnov's Revenge) rather than being a collection of dysfunctional tools that don't fit well or really work at all, and then about 12 characters that actually fit into the system and get to play the game (MvC2). Assuming that someone doesn't grind any game just because they don't want to grind MvC2 or would like more characters on MvC2 to have been more well designed is a little silly. I was there for Leroy and kept playing Gigas. I was around in Tekken 4 when Steve was doing wall push shenanigans. I STILL put up with Karnov teleport glitch. I just like that in Tekken 4, Lei still stands a decent chance against Steve because at the end of the day, though he's much weaker, he's still playing Tekken. In MvC2, you pick Gief, Kobun, B.B. Hood, sure you can meme on people who don't know what they're doing, but if you want to take the game seriously at all, those characters just aren't even playing MvC2 while Cable, Cyclops, Sentinel, for example, are playing MvC2 for real. Just not interested in that. If I was as casual as you say, I would have dropped Karnov's the first time Zazie did a guaranteed stun into death or dropped KI the first time Aria corner traps happened. I'd rather just grind the games that are interesting to me, and MvC2 isn't that game.
@@WuTheBat Question, why does the what you think is interesting matter at all? I think tekken 4 was trash, tekken 5 is mid, and KI isn’t worth my time. However, NO game in history has people competitively playing it for over 20 years. If you think it’s boring, Buddy, that’s your loss- because MvC2 fans literally willed this port into existence- and I applaud their effort. I got many memories of this game in the arcade, and I can personally say- this is easily one of the greatest games of all time
@@larsonabilla5066 Melee still has a competitive scene, people are still playing Super Turbo, Sailor Moon, Karnov's, Rage of the Dragons, etc. Some of those games are even older than MvC2. Does that suddenly make them matter more? I also think T4 is terrible, T5 is overrated among the Tekken scene in my opinion, and KI is by no means a perfect game. I brought them up because you claimed that because I don't like playing MvC2, I drop any game when it isn't balanced, when that clearly cannot be the case if I was playing those games, all of which had some period of notorious imbalance or other issues that plagued them. In any case, I'm not sure why you're so offended by the idea that someone would have liked a more fleshed out design for all the roster members of MvC2. It isn't perfect, and there's definitely room for completing unfinished work. Does MvC2 suddenly become a worse game if, say for example, Captain Commando is more than just his assist call and instead he also has his actual playable tool kit not be beyond lackluster? I accepted a long time ago that it isn't the case, but that doesn't mean I'm not allowed to talk about it. I find the game boring, you don't. Not sure why that's such a big deal. The people that like it are still going to play it, I'm going to keep playing the games I like, simple as. But to make judgements someone having no perseverance just because they don't want to play the game you like is silly. It's nice that you think it's the greatest game of all time. For me, it's just a really cool roster on paper that ultimately disappoints me whenever I actually look under the hood at how the game actually functions. For those who love the game, cool. I personally find MSHvsSF to be the more compelling title in the collection, but I will probably just keep playing it on fightcade instead while I wait for other games.
My brain cant even comprehend whats going on with these matches. I can't even imagine how these dudes hands are moving to play this game. They must be just on auto pilot mode.

i think your comparison to Melee is accurate. I dont think the meta of that game is as limited compared to this (theres like 8 to 9 characters with impresive results) but the honing of all the aspects of one character is definitely there.
As much as I have a personal distaste for Melee (the community is awful and the gravity feels outright gross) I must admit it has a good amount of viable characters compared to say... The two games after it which one could reasonably argue only have one viable character each
To any new players playing the game don't get discouraged. Literally everybody in your position was getting rolled like this with every match if you're playing a competent top-tier player. At its highest level it's a beautiful thing to watch two pros prove themselves and the ultimate expression of what players can do within this game, but it's not always attainable if you don't have godlike execution skills. For the rest of us mere humans, low-tier MVC2 is where the true beauty, depth and tons of still-undiscovered tech comes out, just as long as you understand that if you want to play SERIOUS competition and tournaments you're not going to be playing 99% of those characters. If you're trying to become a Mahvel God like JWong or Khaos you have a LONG and incredibly difficult road ahead of you, but it's not impossible if you dedicate, just be realistic and remember it's supposed to be fun
Im attached to melee for the rest if my life and i love it as a spectator at the ultimate level, (NOT JIGGLY OR PEACH) to each their own and fighting games deserve to be their own sport
9:16 and 12:15 no offense but you can tell what generation an fgc memeber came from with this question. There is no problem here this is just dedication. Custom inputs? Not on mvc2 as far as i know. switching the buttons around is as extensive as my knowledge is. My older brother was a arcade fanatic during its golden era used to tell me crazy stories about them playing mvc2 with six people they'd switch out when they tagged in their teammates' character. My brother god rest his soul was also an artist. He told me one thing in reference to becoming a better artist. Seeing this video makes me think its applicable across the board though. He said,"it takes a hundred hours to get decent at drawing, a thousand hours to get good, and it takes a million to become a master."
Everything you said does indeed apply to Melee. Both in terms of the game being limitless as a whole, then individual characters who have an infinite ceiling, and finally the meta still evolving with brand new tech 20 years after release.
11:11 that is what made melee so interesting especially as a kid watching the documentary and at the time it was a 12 year old game and it still felt absurd. Now in 2024 I scrolled twitter and literally saw new tech and new optimization for a situation this morning.
I think new gen fgc just doesn’t get it with the old school games. Yeah magneto is total bullshit, but he’s also art. There were no balance patches (unless a new version is made, which mvc2 didn’t get), there was just the game- that people fell in love with and took to its absolute limits. Which happens to have seemingly unlimited tech. That’s the beauty about games like Mvc2 and SSBM. They’re total bullshit to get into because the top tiers and best players who have 20+ years of experience will literally prevent you from playing the game, but the game itself played at a top level is like art. It’s unreal. Some of the greatest human performance in a video game ever come from some of these old fighting games.
He’s kind of right about how things like Marvel vs Capcom 2 can have no real ceiling for that top tier meta. And having teams and assists really helps in this regard. Melee has it in 1v1, the later ones like Ultimate is too early to tell. As of right now, it has more than a decade of meta still to be discovered, particularly if doing stuff like 2v2. The mixups and team coverage options are pretty much unlimited. But what complicates the meta is that Stages matter there. It’s better to pick one battlefield stage and spend the long time of meta just on that. But again a lot of people don’t pursue it too far because when it comes down to it, trying to master on that level for even just all the current legal competitive stages is a bit too daunting for most. There is something in the fact that stages don’t matter in stuff like MVC2 that has the meta more approachable. Just don’t expect to beat 20 years experienced pros without putting in the time.
Beautiful to watch, pain to play. Every time I figure out that my childhood favorite game is massive broken for 10 COA chars makes me feel stupid that someday I could won a championship playing with Ruby Heart, Ryu and Black heart. The god tiers ruined my dream so bad
Old Folks Home Marvel players "Hey sonny... you wanna learn an infinite?" "No sir, I'm here to give you a spongebath and your medicine." "LIGHT PUNCH. MEDIUM PUNCH. LIGHT KICK."
I've been mulling over playing a fighting game for maybe 6 years now but just could never take the plunge. It was anxiety mixed with my existing comfort games preventing me ultimately. However, I finally just jumped in with this collection and played MvC2. I don't know what I'm doing but it's been a blast learning and getting better inch by inch. Watching insanely high level stuff like this actually makes me feel better, because no matter how good I get, I know for a fact I'll never be this good lol, and somehow that works as a sort of comfort to not stress about my skill level. Just today I forced myself to learn to counter jump-ins and it felt really good seeing my opponent changing up what they were doing because it didn't work anymore.
Ironically thats the attitude that'll get you to improve even more than you think. Max discourages the idea that players can get to this level, but the truth is you definitely can. Get your execution down first, and then just get familiar with situations. Max is projecting a little bit and I know this for a fact because I used to play high level competition and the only reason I didn't get farther was because at the time I only played in arcades while everyone else had it at home.
Growing up in the 90s in NYC I used to go to china town fair arcade and would see the best players play for money sometimes going as far as 100$ a match. There was even formats where characters like magneto and storm were banned from play. I got to see top tier players duke it out for money shit was amazing. Also I have seen dr. Doom wreck teams he has an infinite ad well so wait until the right player gets a hold of him and watch him go to town like magneto as well.
Always, in every fighting game, there are broken characters. Here is no exception, but clearly, it's not just "Oh, look, he uses a broken character and that's why he always wins", no, it shows that there is also gigantic experience in all this, as you say Maximilian.
If they could figure out how to get that much sauce in 80% of the roster at the same time it would be such a magical game. Maybe not worth wishing for haha
Watched this set a few days ago. I could swear it was 1.5x speed. Had to watch Neo and other stuff to check if it wasn't. This was one of the fastest mvc2 has been played hands down.
I personally don't like the idea of having characters solely for their assist like I'm not expecting to even have to fight with them. I want to be sure they can pick up the slack if things turn sour. Then again, I'm not very good anyway.
That’s why I’m petitioning Capcom and marvel to make tournaments where you have choose characters from a box. Everybody chooses the same characters and that makes it boring. So having random character selection through it will make it more interesting. And prevent people from choosing the same characters constantly.
@@ldreyes Personally I think the problem is that after yet another re-release of this classic... we never got an optional rebalance mode.. I would have liked to see what buffs capcom would have given the mid and low tiers. I know it's supposedly wrong to want anything to change in this game but making it optional would have been safe and they coulda breathed way more life back into this game. Folks would be discovering all sorts of new tech for characters that may never make it to another MvC title.
@@edwardknox9269 Problem is stuff like that would only be relevant for... one month, two months if it's lucky. Have ya seen how long Ultra Street Fighter 2 lasted? Actually that's little unfair since that game was plagued with delay based netcode, broken boss characters being legal in ranked, and no edition select. The point is it was new version of SF2 that we haven't seen in years but no one cared enough to dig into it. Hell, we don't really know the full changes, the most we do know are weirdly targeted nerfs to E. Honda and T. Hawk. In truth, retro players will only stick to what they're 99% familiar with rather than moving onto whatever is the newest version. That's why some people were upset that X-Men vs SF was version 4 instead of 2 because that's what they were used to playing for years.
1:42 In a sense, yes Melee is kinda like this, especially given as of recent, mid tiers have been on the rise, hell solo DK even got to top 3 at a supermajor a month ago.
I feel like Melee and Marvel 2 are spiritually very similar games. - Old crossover fighting game - Super Jank - A handful of top tiers run the game - Fast-paced, difficult gameplay - Boundless skill expression
I would say Melee is more balanced though, proportionally. About half the cast can be argued to be "viable", and previously low tier characters like Yoshi and Donkey Kong are getting results that put their tier placement into question. The gulf between the top tiers and mid tiers isn't near as vast as Marvel 2, where in a 56 character roster not even a quarter of the characters are viable, and the top tiers are basically playing a completely different game from even the "high" tier characters. Not to say Marvel 2 is bad or that Melee is even better than it, far from it. Melee is the only Smash I like, but I personally prefer traditional fighters these days. I just think the character viability ratio is far more lopsided in Marvel 2 than in Melee.
It's not a problem but it does make the game stale to watch seeing the same 6 or so characters. FGC will criticize games with a small roster but a game with a roster this size only to see MSP and the like just get chosen boggles me. I love the ratio scene a lot now.
So, if i want to play as Spider-man or something, I’m SOL because they aren’t Magneto, Storm or Sentinel? What I see is the same 5 characters, the same gameplay, over and over. 50+ characters and only 5 are ever played.
You can play anyone you want. Players usually won't pick the gods if they see you're using a B team. Also tier lists mean nothing when you're learning the game.
If you want to play Spiderman, play Spiderman. It'll be years before whatever the gods of the game are doing needs to concern you if you are new at it.

Last playable release for this game prior to this point was 2009. In the PS3/Xbox360 days. With the gold standard being the Dreamcast version that came out in 2000. This game is new to a whole generation of players, and the OGs both, known and unknown, have stories to tell about this legendary title. Capcom Peaked with this one, Marvel 3 was cool and all, but this was the True Ultimate. If you could hang in this, you could do anything in fighting games.

Remake this game in Guilty Gear Strive graphics with all the good animation. Special cut scenes will make it epic.

That said, I'm low level enough where people are still just playing teams of characters they like so it only affects me to a certain degree
The devs took the fact that Magneto is a pretty strong mutant in the comics and really rolled with it
I legit forgot the secret sauce to winning in MVC2 is spamming assists. Thanks Max.
The fact that the God tiers of MvC2 are virtually all X-Men is funny to me as a casual X-Men fan
At least I get to see the Capcom guys when Max plays though.
its funny too in the latest magneto arc in the comics, he literally got resurrected by storm and together they did a ultimate combo that blasted the shadow king (a cosmic level being)
so mvc2 is kinda lore accurate
@@CyberBinary You know there are multiple X-Men movies, plenty of animated stuff and close to infinity comics you can enjoy to get acquainted with the characters, right? MCU is not going to do them justice anyways.
@@LordBaktor I'm not even an MCU fan, it's just something I've interacted with because it's been enthroned as a part of the relevant pop culture of my time. I understand that there's a lot of X-Men media out there. It's not that just I'm unacquainted with them, it's also that I'm uninterested in the X-Men. Everything I currently know about it doesn't sound like it's for me. I'm fine with that. There was something to do there other than getting trounced online because you had the gall to want to play someone like Chun-Li. There's a slim chance I may get the collection on sale to play casually with friends, but it's hard for me to want to play online or watch high level play.

I personally find MSHvsSF to be the more compelling title in the collection, but I will probably just keep playing it on fightcade instead while I wait for other games.

i think your comparison to Melee is accurate. I dont think the meta of that game is as limited compared to this (theres like 8 to 9 characters with impresive results) but the honing of all the aspects of one character is definitely there.
As much as I have a personal distaste for Melee (the community is awful and the gravity feels outright gross)
I must admit it has a good amount of viable characters compared to say...

No art, just an unbalanced character in a time there were no patches. There no difference between mag and sf6 luke at launch.

What we call the spin out, is roughly around 46 hits-ish.
Anytime I see someone win with Magneto, Storm, Sentinel I think "Yeah of course he won"

A optional rework would be fucking amazing!!!!!!!
My immediate reaction was: No, I see a LOT of problems!

Absolutely true of melee, good shout out
I feel like Melee and Marvel 2 are spiritually very similar games.
- Old crossover fighting game
- Super Jank
- A handful of top tiers run the game
- Fast-paced, difficult gameplay
- Boundless skill expression
I’m definitely not complaining that it’s impressive I just wish more characters had this potential and not limited to make 10% of the roster 😢
It's not a problem but it does make the game stale to watch seeing the same 6 or so characters. FGC will criticize games with a small roster but a game with a roster this size only to see MSP and the like just get chosen boggles me. I love the ratio scene a lot now.
It’s crazy those matches weren’t even close until the last one.

Yeah it would get hella stale
You can play anyone you want. Players usually won't pick the gods if they see you're using a B team.
Also tier lists mean nothing when you're learning the game.
If you want to play Spiderman, play Spiderman. It'll be years before whatever the gods of the game are doing needs to concern you if you are new at it.
this sort of thing is why I like the idea of character ratio for this game
