Thank you for saying it like it is. And for advocating for anglers to have gratitude, humility, and respect for the bass. So often, in this pursuit we love, (recreational and tournament bass fishing) bass are commoditized-- treated like means to an end, -and there's a disgraceful perversion in that. We're missing out when we fall victim to that ignorance. And you argue so effectively that some anglers are missing the point on this subject.
Once again: Thanks for using your platform to do good for the sport, and to affect change for the better. Good Evening, Sir.

Randy. I wish I could give you a million thumbs up for this video. I am so sick and tired of seeing people disrespect the fish they catch. Whenever I see it I always give the video a thumbs down. If I am a subscriber, I will unsubscribe. And often I will comment on the video saying why I unsubscribed. And often I get ridiculed, name called, bad things said about my mother, you name it. No one uses nets anymore. they just rip the fish into the boat. Or drag it up and bank. They don't care about the fish they catch. Like you said they treat it like it is a stick. I have gone as far as to use barbless hooks. I always mash down the barb. I would rather lose a fish than to hurt or kill it because the bard rips a huge hole in its mouth. I could go on and on about how people are disrespecting the fish. But you know how it is. I think the fishing tournament organizations should require that all fish be netted. No matter the size. Let them be the example. I know one of them did have something about a 10-minute time out if a fish was dropped or something. They all need to do it and expand it. The sporting fisherman will do what he sees the pros doing on TV. If you are a pro, be a positive example of how things should be done. Not a negative one. Thanks for the video. Please keep them coming.

Went fishing with a guy from work years ago. While out on the water, this guy catches a bass and asks me "you wanna see beer batter?" Puzzled, I say yes. He proceeds to pour cheap light beer down the bass' throat and says "there's the beer" punches the poor fish back into the water and then say "and there's the batter".
Never went fishing with that asshole again.

When I catch a Bass, I treat it as carefully and respectfully as I can so I can release it back into the water. That fish gave me the enjoyment of catching them, the least I can do is handle it with care. Having said that…. I will never consider a fish as “equal” to me. They are not smarter than humans in any way, manner, or form. They are not stupid by any means, but they are not nearly as smart as Randy wants us to believe. They do deserve our respect when we catch them and we need to make sure we keep the environment clean so they can thrive and provide us with a lifetime of catches.

I became a vegan five years ago and stepping away from sport fishing was (and is) the hardest part of it. I fished my entire life. I still go fishing once or twice a year. It's something that's in my bones. If I weren't a hypocrite, I'd give it up entirely. At the bare minimum, I've stopped trying to convince myself that I'm not harming animals for fun. There's just no way around it. No matter how careful and respectful you try to be, there's always a percentage of fish that get hooked in the eye, the gill, the throat. Or that swim away seeming perfectly fine only to die within a couple days. I'm also not convinced that fish are too neurologically simple to experience pain.
I think it's commendable that you admit to having ethical misgivings about fishing. That's tough to do, especially for someone whose whole livelihood depends upon it. But once you start following those principles of respect you laid out to their end, you'll run out of defenses for recreational fishing. I admire you, Randy, and I think you have the intellectual honesty to turn that stone over if you're ever inclined to.

I desperately wanted a picture of this fish and so i immediately unhooked her and went running to my car for my phone but she flopped and i dropped her on the ground and after that i felt horrible and i just took her to the waters edge immediately and released her because i felt like this fish was special and proof of bragging rights ant worth that fishs life. Randy, you’re right. Wildlife and entire ecosystems need our respect and careful stewardship. The balance is often delicate and intricately connected. As our population grows, so does our impact on the environment. As the world suffers, so do we. No supernatural power will intervene. We all need to take responsibility and protect the bass, their forage, other species, plant life, water and air quality.

What makes me sick to my stomach is the bass tournaments that still bounce the fish around in the live well for hours. My local lake that is electric and paddle only just started tournaments again. The boats are basically electric bass boats with live scopes and all the other bells and whistles. At the end of the tournament I watched the weigh in after I was done fishing. The fish all got tossed back in the same place and at least 25% went bell up.

Thank goodness someone is bold enough to mention ethics in fishing. I have seen some awful behaviors on the water with fishing. I have seen some wonderful ethics as well. To me, its a reflection of them as a person and their current mind set.. I thank every fish I catch. Its an instinct I guess. Its respect. I used to fish a pier off Lake Erie for perch and saw some horrific fish treatment for no reason. To the point, I have had a few arguments with strangers over it. They'll say "well I am keeping it." or "its just a fish." Well, the more you torture a fish, the worse it'll taste. Just like deer hunting. So actually, I remind them the gentler you are with fish that your keeping, the better they taste. Or, dispatch them immediately. I don't believe in stringers for this reason for trout. Thats a long torture for a few ounces of meat and I can taste the difference when strung like many do. What I catch and keep is killed immediately, bled and throw on ice. So if that means I am only wading 50 feet down a stream to do so, so be it. Crappie, same deal, killed immediately and placed on ice unless I have a live well and know my ice may melt. I do it for the fish and for me. My brother is a good example of someone who has no idea that releasing a fish back into the water after catching doesn't mean they always swim away without issues. He isn't a bad person, just doesn't understand they are living. He was catching trout without nets, mangling their mouths, dragging catfish all around the deck, never wetting his hands, handling them in every wrong way there was......I'd like to think I am teaching him these are living creatures that deserve respect. He has gotten a net since and his behaviors have changed for the better. Maybe just for me. But whatever, its at least a change. If anything, anyone I fish with, if you aren't showing respect for the fish. (and also deer hunting) you will not be welcome to fish or hunt with me. I make it clear as crystal what I expect from my friends on the boat. I don't hold my tongue about it. When a person places their own ego and adrenaline rush over the life of an animal, I am quick to remind them those animals are the reason you are having a good time, so you better treat them with respect or you don't get on my boat.

I 100% agree! like many of you, I love to go outside and admire God's creation. I'm very young (14 to be exact ) and I see a lot of kids my age who I take out fishing not understanding why we respect nature. I've had the privilege to teach others this moral compass. I've made a lot of these mistakes before as have many of you. I've dropped fish, eye-hooked fish, and started catching so many I forget to respect and admire the fish. I believe videos like this are 10 times more important than "how-to" videos. To all adults and parents reading this, teach your kids this EVEN if they don't fish. I see so many young people that just don't get it. when I say young people I mean ages 1-45 years old. These morals create good wildlife management systems, good fishermen, and good fish populations so raise your kids right folk.

Hmmm - considering the analogy of bass fishing: artificial/live baits with hooks, impaling a fish with force and dragging it through grass and brush to land it, not to mention oftentimes they loose an eye or suffer gill damage? On the other hand - I think all tournament organizations could prohibit slaming a fish on board. Would be better for the fish's survival if hand landed or netted to protect it's slime coat. I worked with several FWCC and Federal Wildlife Scientist from 2009 to 2023 - our job was to create wildlife habitiat, work on installation protection plans to improve water quality and manage eradication efforts with evasive species. Where does Mr. Bass fit in: it is an intriciate part of ecosystems and the food chain - being the apex predator in some areas and somewhere in the middle at other geographical locations. Bass are subordinate to humans, bowfin, and large alligators. We should protect our resources, and not overly abuse or harvest the fish we catch, but notwithstanding - bass fishing is NOT a kind or gentle activity on the fish and might be appreciated as such by some. One thing I like about guys that "spotlight" with small jighead minnows and 6 pound line - their tackle does not enable them to swing fish on board and allow them to flop around.

Whenever anyone catches a 'Good One' on my boat . . . I'll net it with a rubber net and leave the net and the fish in the water.
I'll throw a High-5 while we check out the bass (still in the water).
    If it's a 'Photo-Worthy' catch, we'll get the phone / camera ready 1st . . . fish still in the net/ water.
If it's a 'single-hook' lure we'll leave the bait in for the picture.
If it's a treble hook bait, I'll take the hook(s) out and secure the bait so no accidents.
Then we quickly photograph the fish, and then quickly release it.
This program really works well for not only the bass, but for us as well.
We can also set up the photographs better as well, by getting the person or boat in the correct position with the sun . . . usually to the back of the photographer, and in the face of the angler.
    Try it . . . you'll see what I mean.
    Great video.

The yelling and screaming of fisherman when they catch a good fish is intolerable for me. It seems to be concentrated in the last 15 yrs or so.
Or when guys catch a good fish, hold it up shaking the fish in celebration. And when they keep the fish in front of the camera for 5 min while they tell their life story about every anything that led up to that 9 pounder.
The insatiable desire for attention, by grown people, the neverending pursuit of external validation has reached a point that I'm not sure if they're hitting on all cylinders.

i almost have even less respect for the anglers that respect bass and handle them properly only to on the next cast catch a drum or a carp or any off target or non gamefish and treat it like shit
it’s embarassing to see someone catch a bass or a fly angler catch a trout and be so gentle then catch a whitefish or a bowfin and conk them over the head and throw them in the bushes or frisbee the white fish back across the stream
watching some guy whine and gag because he catches a pike and it’s “slimy and stinky” like a little child does not impress me total disrespect i would kill to catch and appreciate that pike
ALL fish need to be respected and if you have to cull them legally be humane and responsible and sensitive to other people using the resource don’t leave them in piles rotting on the bank next to peoples kids and dogs
