- How can you modify a Whopper Plopper and still catch fish, while reducing unnecessary damage to fish? I'm a big advocate for "Catch & Release" and I personally can't stand treble hooks...so I would prefer not to use them. Many of the popular lures today have trebles, but is it really necessary? I'm ditching one of the trebles on my Whopper Plopper 60, and replacing it with a single small gauge circle hook. I want to see how bad it affects my hookup ratio. My goal is to have only single hooks, but I'm starting out with the belly hook for my first test. To my surprise the single hook worked great, and I managed to catch a huge surprise. Awesome idea. Makes it more weedless and I completely agree with the fact that without good catch and release practice we cant have crazy fishing. CONGRATS ON THE 2ND TAGGED FISH. That's insane. Love those blowups.
Thanks buddy! How are you doing Aidan? I'm planning on switching out the tail hook for a single hook as well, now that I know that the belly hook works pretty good. I think it's a good trade off, to avoid unnecessary injury to these awesome creek monsters. Be safe my friend.

Wow Trey! 2 tags and that 20... wow!!! Not only was that a massive smallmouth, but the pattern on that thing. Fishing in the rain is where it's at. Nicely done!
I can't believe it! Whenever I clean up the creeks, I get blessed in someway or another. I packed out 5 bags of trash last night so that I will better my chances of finding #3 this weekend! This is just a theory I'm working on. LOL!

Nice modification...allows use in more areas, and does less damage to the fish.

Thank you Mr. Joe. It's crazy, last year I only found one 20", but this year I have found four in the creeks. I'm not sure what the difference is.

Not sure what I did to deserve this, but thank you Lord! I was totally blown away Mr. Chris! I've been looking threw some different Native American articles about stone tools, but I'm thinking you might be on to something! LOL! It's crazy how bad that injury was on that smallie's back, and how well it healed up. He was healthy for sure! TWRA told me the mortality rate of creek smallies is way higher than the smallies in lakes. I guess that make sense. Glad to see you getting some of the creek action! Be safe buddy.
Not only is the single hook safer for the fish, it's safer for me too. Being the clutz I am, I'm constantly sticking myself with those treble hooks - or getting them caught in my clothes. I need to try that mod. Great video and a 20" creek smallie is a serious trophy fish.
GREEEEAAAAT video brother. You are on some beautiful fish brother. I like using single hooks a lot better than treble. Less injury to the fish and less profile.. love the rain brother, my favorite time to fish and hunt and be outside..

Great video bro! Congrats on the second tag! Thats incredible. Seems you may lose a few more with the hook mod, but less damage to the fish seems a worthy trade off. And it doesn't seem to slowed your fishing down at all!

I need to make sure the belly hook is oriented forward (that will help avoid losing some), but another benefit is that my line is not staying tangled up on the treble. I've been studying some maps looking for some news areas to fish. Some of the ares I fish are really starting to get pressured, so I need to find some backups. I can spend a lot of time exploring creeks that aren't any count, but I only need 1 or 2 new gems.

Thanks Mr. Chris. I'm going to try single hooks on the belly and the tail...I'm curious how many I will miss. I think the trade off is worth vs. not setting there for minutes trying to get them unhooked. We shall see.

I've always loved fishing in the rain.....bite is on point then!! That was an awesome one there! Whoa haha. True fishermen! I agree with the belly hook. I dont like trebles. Im thinking of just taking all mine off and putting singles. Sucks when a Pike sucks it back and hard to get out! Awesome vid!
Do you notice that the bites dropping off once the storm sets in? It seems like the bite are awesome on the front end of the storm, but degrades as the barometric pressure continues to get lower.

That's a good model on the plopper...what's the tag for?...I haven't caught one yet that was tagged..is that a TWRA study thing?...keep the tips and stuff comin..
How's it going Mr. David? TWRA is doing a statewide study to see if size limits are needed for smallmouth. TWRA is keeping up with the number of fish that are caught, that are harvested. I hope you have a great weekend. Be safe.
@@fishsmack I would agree with a size limit..they aren't as abundant as spots or large mouth..what do you do if should happen to catch a tagged one..record the weight, length and whatnot?
@@davidclark2046 You have to cut the top portion of the tag off, that contains a serial number and the TWRA agent's phone number. When you call the agent, they will ask you serval questions, but they will want to know the coordinates of were you caught the fish, and if you released it or cooked it up.
@@fishsmack oh ok man I had no idea how that worked..as far as shore lunch bass I've never ate it..always been told is real strong on the fish taste..thanks for the input though..
