I haven't used many baitcaster rods, but I love the Dobyns Fury lineup.
Agree! I break more pricier rods! I have never broken an ugly stick. I definitely feel the difference in the expensive rods in crank baits, jerk baits, and finesse. The rest are so close I can’t tell. Frog rods soft plastics, flipping cheap rods are great. Big bait rods for glides etc are all in the sub $300 range usually, so a great rod isn’t breaking the bank for those.
B.Lat you did a awesome job on explaining and breaking down the baitcaster reels and the spinning reels and the difference between the two of them I have started learning about different types of reels myself and how they work for me in different situations that's work for me but hey man keep up the good work and helping people learn more about fishing love the voide

To me, the best rods are in that $60-$110 range. And if they are expensive, I'll add it to the cart until it goes on sale around a holiday. Spend smarter not more.
Great video! Thanks to your previous videos, i started using slower gear ratio reels. I can say I've noticed a difference! As far as rod price, most my rods are under the $100 mark. They are very durable and sensitive enough where i feel everything.

So right about hooksets. I'm old enough to remember the advent of braid into the mainstream. I broke numerous rods because I was used to setting hooks on bungee like mono. Really had to back off on my hooksets!

Couldnt agree with you more. I’m a rod snob with a bunch of high end combos, but for moving baits I love a cheap “fast” rod, as they are usually more like a mod-fast, plus they are way less likely to break.
Also agree on lighter frog rods than most. While I agree with your hook set theory, I also just like casting light frogs on a rod with some tip. Hate casting frogs on a broomstick, makes it too hard to skip imo.

My oldest Ugly Stick is about 40 years old. Not cheap, but not expensive back in the day. Still one of my favorite rods, even if it is a 2 piece rod. Top half only ever went sailing once on me. The piece of tape on it is about 40 years old too.

I have 2 old rods that still get used, a Berkeley Phazer bait casting rod I got in 1990 and a Shimano spinning rod from 83/84 my dad bought me as a kid that’s fiberglass. All my others are $40-$90 range. Never any issues or breaks.
Love the Fenwick HMG and HMX rods for my spinning combos! Great sensitivity and very durable for me

bass pro makes a crappie max casting rod that is a great bfs rod for like 40 bucks!

Favorite defender here as well i love them. I broke one after a cpl years of use and immediately replaced it. Its the best. I even sling a 1 oz jig head on the Detroit river with it even though its only rated for 3/4.

Moving baits hands down $125 and under is all you need. I personally like Ark Cobb series. $75-80 on sale and has plenty of options for different techniques. The century, lil’skipper, and buzz burner is the best 3 rod combo out there……. Great content. The whole discussion rod to reel to hook is solid information. I have 2 fast action rods, my other 4 are somewhere between moderate and moderate fast. I think line diameter plays a huge factor. If you get the line diameter matched up with hook diameter, you can get away with a moderate fast rod.
What reel do you use on the hex rod for flipping?
Favorite White Bird 6' Medium Moderate spinning is my go to, I have two of them. Perfect size to fish around other people on a boat and just an absolute workhorse. I tend to break one a year though because I'm tough on them. I do have them paired with Shimano Vanford c3000 reels which I feel are worth the investment.
I agree with what they say about spinning reels. We use spinning reels for casting lures to stripers in saltwater. A normal striper is around 24" and we use a 2500 or 3000 size reel. Theres not much to get hung up on so we use 10lb to 15 lb braid.
You can get an ARK BFS reel and a Jenko BFS rod on Tackle Warehouse. They're both $130 and available in the USA 🇺🇸

The best rod for the money imo are the lews Lazer rods, under 40$. My only complaint is the cheap line guides but I've never broken one of these rods. Favorite rods can be iffy sometimes, they are either tough AF or you break the tip casting one so it's hit or miss sometimes. But my toughest rod is definitely my daiwa swim bait rod, I've dropped it down cliffs into water and it floats, I've stepped on it, dropped stuff on it, throw baits over the weight limit on it and it's a workhorse. Best 100$ I've ever spent
Lower cost rods are basically a few years behind in technology than the higher end rods. Lower cost rods reduce the costs by cheaper other components like eyelets and reel seats.
That’s not necessarily the case. As we mentioned in the video it’s the material used to construct the rods. Higher modulus graphite is more brittle.
@@BrianLatimerFishingthat's the power of advertising though. A little research will debunk half of the rod industries high price rod myths, but most people just don't dig beyond the surface before they buy.
My rods range from 60-220 dollars, and there's honestly not a ton of difference between them, other than the pain in the wallet level if I break one.
But reels, there is a noticeable difference between budget and high quality. I'll spend for a reel, but the rod is way less important because the diminishing returns hit pretty quick once you cross the 100 dollar mark.
@@S2pidMedia its a little strange i fish many dobyns and a few megabass rods and thats it and my rods are great and i fish in Ca delta berry melones clear lake so decent amount of variation here i know my old ugly stick can get by dropshotting the one i got 20 years ago but its going to feel like shit i know you didnt mention how it was going to feel fishing it lol but this is a strange conversation about quality of life in a way just my opinion maybe im looking at this all wrong
@@garysims4491 I actually have a few ugly stiks laying around. The carbon series is decent enough, but for the cost, it's decent at best for sensitivity. The older versions I have are horrible though. I've missed many subtle bites from big fish that I didn't feel until it was too late.
The rods I use for my every day fishing now are really good rods. I agree on the quality of life thing. It's better to spend a little bit more on something that's going to perform better, than buy 30 dollar rods that won't cut it if you're remotely serious about your craft.
Lew’s carbon fire rods - Dick’s has the rods on sale for $52.00 at least once a month. I can bench press a small car but I have never broken the medium heavy series. I did have a mudfish break one at the tip when it did the death roll.
All my rods and reels are under 100 dollars for the combo. I got an old Shimano, an Ugly Stick thats 25 years old also, an Ozark trail ugly stick knock off, a Bps megacast combo and a few Kastking rods and reels. They all work well enough and it gives me options to run a couple different rods with different lines and lures. ect.
Lew's custom lite rods and the IM 8 for me.
I have been a long time watcher of your channel BLat! I cant seem to spend more than $100 for a rod or a reel. my most expensive combo is a 7' 3" SLX rod and the SLX A baitcaster ($209 including tax for the combo). I am almost afraid to use it. I have 30 combos all from $10 for the kids up to $85 and maybe $160 including line for me. My go to rods have been around that $85 mark.
I'm 60. Been fishing since I was 7 or so. I learned on monofilament, with rods called fast action that resembled more what is called moderate fast today. I learned to set a hook like Godzilla, lol.
I tried braid and did not like it. The way I set a hook is so deeply ingrained that I just default to it.
i have a ugly stick thats 30 years old , and wont break !! i have tried and it cost $30,00 !!!! i dont buy super expensive stuff , i cant afford it and why ?? if it gets broken your gonna be super angry an expensive rod is trash .. no my tools at work thats different , my snap on dealer lives a comfortable life because of me !!!

Same. My ugly stick has been beat to hell, but still works. I spent $170 on a rod only for the top 6 inches to snap off.
Ugly stick for the win. I have several in both spinning and casting and they’ve never let me down

Ugly stik does make a durable rod but they have zero sensitivity. I purposely use my ugly sticks for bait fishing with a dead sticked rod. If you spend a little more money you can get a rod that is much lighter, and sensitive without impacting durability
berkley lightning rods will throw almost everything well
I am lucky enough to be able to buy some really nice rods in the “mid” price category. But 2 of my most used rods are a 7’ medium fast tourney special bait caster and a 7’ medium light fast micro light both from bass pro shops about $50
The same applies to baseball/softball bats. When you're talking a drop of -10 or more (length - weight), bats start getting fragile. But, I'm a little nicer on my rods and I love the sensitivity so I like the nice rods but don't put the same effort into reels. A $200 reel these days is more than enough.
I spend $50 to $80 for moving bait rods. Maybe up to $100 for bottom boucing bait rods. I look for sales to get best bang for the buck. Reels...alot of good spinning reels for $50 to $70. Baitcasters...the $80 to $90 Lews reels are really good for the money.

All my rods are from 13 fishing. Either they are fate black or omens. Yes I’ve snapped one before. Since 13 has moved to Rapala, the warranty is different. Miss the oopsie warranty. I used to be able to call a guy and have a rod in the mail the next few days.

I used Ugli Stik's years ago and loved them. Don't really like the new ones. JMO. My favorites now are Abu Vengence rods. Both spinning and casting. Again JMHO.
I use a cheap fiberglass rod for bfs. If you want a sensitive rod, use braid.

Just put a 250$ shimano reel on a 59$ Berkley lightning rod! 6' ! Love it ! I mean I got 300$ rods but love the lightning rod for my senko pole ! Shit it's hard to find anything 6 foot rod anymore!!!😮😮

Yep agreed , the ugly sticks are not the best , but not bad for the money , was the point , I do have better stuff , some Berkley rods Abu Garcia, etc , but the point to my comment was that for the average person fishing and for younger people (kids) buying super expensive fishing gear is not necessary I'm not a pro fisherman that makes his living fishing if I was then I would buy better stuff I don't get to go fishing that much and do not have an unlimited income , I have a family to support , so I guess the point was buy what you can afford and don't be scared to buy cheap stuff and use it and have fun with it . And if it gets damaged / broken it's not going to kill your wallet . The main point is enjoy fishing not take out mortgage to buy a fishing rod !!!
All my rods are sub $80 except 1, I did invest in 1 Shimano expride for jigs, It's a great rod very sensitive and as light as can be but all my other rods work perfectly fine. The fish don't care how expensive your gear is.
I think the rod company’s have went to more of a parabolic bend style rod just for the simple fact that the more the rod bends toward the middle the less likely it is to break.

Anyone that says you need a certain rod for a certain lure is working for their sponsors and not for fishermen. You need the appropriate rod for the appropriate application and that’s dependent on the fish, not the lure.

I use cheeper rod and reels hardly ever do I have a lot of issues with big fish 🐠🐠

Watch Jordan Lee this last week winning the heavy hitters tournament. He was frogging with his signature rod by Abu Garcia. $50 to $100 The stress that he was putting on those rods was insane and they never broke once!

The biggest flaw I see with cheap rods are inferior guides.
Be cautious knocking on wood! Just make sure it doesn't have legs or wheels otherwise your luck can roll/walk away. Lol
Favorite rods
I know a guy that only fishes with Shimano Poison and G.Loomis NRX rods and Shimano reels. We're talking $400-800 rods and $300-400 reels. Dude probably has 3-4 thousand in rods/reel setups. To each their own LOL I snapped rod on a Lew's spinning combo last year. I didn't cry. I called the company. They wanted some pics and then they shipped me a new rod in a week! How can I argue with that?
I have a 7 ft spinning that is beat and old.....30 to 40 years old. That rod has caught at least a thousand pounds of fish easily. It has the juice.
first time I've heard someone admit that you can lose fish by making too big of a hole in a fish's mouth and create slack with a heavy rod, locked down drag and no stretch in the line. people talk like every fish they ever lost was cause they didn't have enough power to make the hook penetrate
13 Fishing is one of the only manufacturers in lower price range who makes a fast action rod that is ACTUALLY a fast action rod. When they say fast, they mean it.
Ya you don't need a super expensive rod for reaction baits. You just don't. Now, if you're using a technique where you absolutely need to feel a shad fart, you need a more sensitive rod. Most people don't realize exactly what you said: the higher end lighter more sensitive rods are usually more fragile. I rep a brand and have had people try to say the rods aren't good because it broke. Dig in and hear that they were trying to boat flip a six pounder, or over stressing the rod trying to free a log snag. Well, no shit it broke genius
Moving bait rods I see no reason spending over $150 plus for. For contact bottom bouncing baits that more sensitive expense rod makes sense.
I have broken both of my $500 fly rods and never ever broke my $30 Walmart rod! It kills me.
My most expensive reel is 59.99, it's on a $20 dollar rod. Nothing I have in a rod is more than that $80
We got a huge tackle bait shop in Kentucky called Land Big Fish! They got every lure you can think of and they got some rods.. one brand they got is G-Lumis they start around 650 and end up about one thousand dollars!!!!! That’s just the Rod… no reel included!!!!! Holy smokes!!!
I was with my buddy in that shop and I asked him what fool would spend that kind of money on a rod ? He said “ I’ve 2 of them😮 and he’s just a regular working guy that works for the county road department! And fishes a local Thursday night tournament… at Beautiful Lake Cumberland

Edit: don't forget the amount of line on the reel will change the rate of line retrieved per handle turn, but it doesn't change your gears
