@BassMC101 right? Of all the subtle movements involved in holding your rod. Retrieving it. Hopping it. Spinning the reel is the least taxing of everything. Why would I waste my strong hand on that? My friends tell me "I'm doing it wrong" Think they have gaslighted themselves because they bought one with a right hand retrieve and are sucking it up lol
Unfortunately, we don't have any black bass here in Switzerland, but I catch a lot of pike with chatter baits. It works best if you let it sink to the bottom, wait 1-2 seconds, then reel it in with 2-3 turns of the crank and then let it sink to the bottom again. The bites usually come when you start cranking again.
As a left-handed fisherman I have always insisted that right handed bass fisherman should actually use left-hand retrieve baitcasters- switching is just so inefficient.

I just caught my first fish on a chatterbait last week. It was after heavy rain in very murky water in a pond. It was a small bass but I was still glad to finally get one. Spinners work so much better for me.
That’s awesome. I really encourage you to keep trying a chatterbait when you are fishing in murky water situations. I think it will quickly become a confidence bait!
Hi Miles! Great video, sir. I love the yo-yo in the Spring, the largies just seem to go nuts over it when they're in the creek arms but not on the beds yet. I love that 1/2 oz Big Blade CB for the yo yo it falls slower. I can't believe you didn't mention burning it! Maybe you don't use that technique but its FUN and big largies hit it. I like the 3/4 oz Jackhammer and I reel it almost as fast as I physically can. It stays about 3'-4' under the surface with your tip down. Put a trailer hook (or two) on and HOLD ON to your rod.
Thank you! I agree with everything you mentioned! I honestly think of a burning retrieve as a variation of the straight retrieve but just reeling it ultra fast, but it certainly is very effective sometimes.
Great info ! Chatter baits are hard to beat any time of the year. Don't be afraid to put a baby bass color trailer on a white chatter bait or blue/black on green pumpkin and so forth.
Good video and thank you for the tips. It's one of my favorite baits as well. I have another technique, let it sink to the bottom, and drag it over rocky cover like a crawdad and let it stop briefly, and repeat. It resembles a fleeing crawdad especially with a good trailer. It's almost like the yo-yo, but more gentle, just lift a little bit to keep it just off the bottom, pause, repeat. You could almost say it's like a hybrid between your yo-yo and ripping techniques, only slower. Obviously, green pumpkin is a great color for this.
Great tips! I have not used the last two you demonstrated and will add them. I have caught several largemouth on both of the Chatterbait CrossEyeZ red/red crawfish trailer and black/blue/blue crawfish trailer bumping (like a jig), small bounces on the bottom.
Thanks for the vid. That last retrieve is new to me, can’t wait to try it! I am new to your channel. Curious about name of channel, with so many FFS haters out there!
I'm left handed and can fish with either left or right its a handy skill if you fish a lot. Chatter bait is one of the baits that I have struggled to catch fish with I can catch them with jigs, shaky heads, Texas rig, spinner baits. I've used the same tips in this video just no luck.
Hello Miles, Chatter is very good in French waters for Pike and Catfish (silurus glanis). YoYo retrieve is my favourite but in a lake near my home with very little grass it doesn't work, and i use other lures. I will try the last retrieve.
Threw my 1st chatterbait last week after trying 50 different baits in clear water for 2 days..nothing.. its the start of winter as well and struggling to get bites.. got struck on the white chatterbait at 11pm at night reeling super slow just a slight vibration. . Super stoked. And then the following day started slaying the bass on a texas rig with a 4 inch yum dinger in guilles suite colour..fishing very very slow. 2 to 3 min retrievals. Popping once or twice and just letting it sit.
Wow, finally a fishermen that understands that it's better to get a left hand retrieve reel and keep their strong arm on the rod at all times! I thought I was one of the only ones.
Glad to come across this video... The Chatterbait seems to be my kryptonite when it comes to fishing. I can catch fish on rattletraps, jigs, crankbaits, worms, flipping baits, topwater, etc. But never on a Chatterbait... And I know guys and fished with guys who kill them on the chatterbait. I've had one bite using a chatterbait and the fish got off at my feet. So never officially landed one.

Water keep hook in place while bottom fishing with chatter box never know when fish be on top or bottom. Weather time of day plays role how they going move in water as well

The biggest fish I catch come from the rip & stop method with a slight alternative. After casting it out to a target, I let it sink to the bottom and give it a couple of sharp rips with the rod to really get the blade thumping. As I let it back down, hold on. It's like the fish watched it fall into the water and drop to the bottom and once it gets ripped away from them, they can't stand it. Rip it like you're trying to get an inline spinner's blades started. It's like a cat toy, I guess.
Awesome! I think you’re right with the cat toy analogy. Having kept many bass in an aquarium, they share many qualities with cats, although I never really thought of it in those terms until now!
Awesome video. Just picked up 5 new colors of chatters. A video detailing how to determine hard rocky bottom or weed bottom on graph would be epic. Im a new boat owner as of a few weeks ago.
In my home body of water here in upstate New York, I'm forced to use wire leaders because of the monstrous pike that live alongside the bass in the thick milfoil. Do you have any pointers as to which of your retrieves might be more suitable for a heavier rig? I'm not sure that the 'Rip-N-Stop' would be the best one, given the cover and the wire leader. 🤔
Yeah, pike are definitely an issue for sure! I would say if you’re forced to use a wire leader, a straight retrieve with some pops of the rod might be a simple and effective retrieve for the situation.
@@SonarFishing Thanks! I learned an expensive lesson a few years back when I lost 9 spinnerbaits and 4 chatterbaits to pike in a single season. The pond I fish at has an outlet to a major river a few miles away; when the water level was high, the pike came in. Once the water receded, the pike were trapped, and have been in competition with the bass for a few seasons now. 😢

@@SonarFishing ok lmao, let’s give it a go…..I’m headed out to lake fork here in Texas later this morning. It’s been rainy with a cold snap the last couple days, lows in the mid 30’s at night with high 40’s to low 50’s in the afternoons…..Until this snap the water temps on the upper end was 61 to 64 and fish in full spawn. Fish, I’ve been catching are in the back of coves with small arms laying east or west with fish coming off the south side….. most of the bigger fish coming off of Green Punkin pepper flake trick worms thrown literally in the dirt, and pulled about a foot off the bank into the water….. I noticed some brim moving around just before this cold snap….. the weather this afternoon is partly cloudy with temps moving back in to the 70’s….. I know my fish are going to be scattered and moving, I’ll figure that out when I get on the water. With all that said what color would you throw? Will the weight of the chatter bait make a difference? My son has a few of these baits in the back of the boat, so I may have a limited selection, I live about 10 minutes from the lake so I’ll also pass a nice size bait store on my way.
Don’t ask me how but I can’t catch a fish on a chatterbait. I’ve tried everything from retrieving it different to trailers and different bladed jigs. Like a jackhammer or a mini max. Somehow someway I’ve never gotten a bite. It really sucks though because I’ve heard how magical CB fishing can be.
Go with the original chatterbait. Work on your retrieve. my biggest bass have been caught on chatterbaits. And on my mini original chatterbait with no skirt iv cought multiple fish around or over 5 lbs
If you already have some Jackhammers, start with a green pumpkin chatterbait and trailer and keep things simple in terms of retrieve. Once you start getting bites with that and gain confidence, you can branch out to getting more complex with your arsenal. Just like everything else, sometimes it takes time for the lightbulb to go off and you to gain confidence. Ill do whatever I can to help you start catching fish on one!
Sorry, winding over pulling does not change the direction of the chatterbaits reaction. You are shortening the line between you and the bait. Speed can of course vary (with either retrieve), but DIRECTION is the same.
This is true depending on what degree your rod is at while pulling or winding. The biggest key for that technique is winding is much better because you can keep your rod in position to set the hook when you get the bite, while pulling will have the rod all the way back in a position where you have no more range of motion for a hook set. Thanks for watching!
@@TheAverageMiz To be honest, this is all up to your budget as far as what brand or model to choose. What I can recommend is if you’re trying to get the most versatile reel you can, get one with a gear ratio in the 7 gear ratio range (like 7.2:1 for example). This gear ratio is great for most situations in bass fishing. Other than that, I personally use the Fitzgerald VLD10’s : amzn.to/4cifrMt

@@Real_Talk411 I really try to be. To be honest, it’s really frustrating how click-baity you have to make titles these days for the TH-cam algorithm to get your videos put out there. That’s a line I strive never to cross on this channel. Thanks for watching man!
A lil rant. I hate fishing vidoes the are call "what you're doing wrong" "mistskes everyone makes" not gonna watch those. People dont respond well when they are told they are wrong or that they are making a mistake , ever had a kid ? Tell people ypu want to help , , tell people you want to make them better . The ole flys with honey thang
Thank you for the feedback. It is of course not my intention to make it seem as though individual viewers don’t know what they’re doing, and I honestly would prefer to leave a title more neutral myself. Unfortunately the responses to more neutral titles don’t work consistently enough to drive people to click on the video in most cases. I for one would never intentionally put down someone and what I assume they know, or don’t know, on a topic, but I do work very hard on the content that I put out on a daily basis, and I believe it will help people catch more fish and so I want to use a title that can do well from an algorithm standpoint. That being said, a line I will never cross on this channel is picking on any single individual- because in the end I am not to say what you specifically do or do not know. Thank you for watching and your feedback, and I just want you to know that I always strive to be respectful to every person on this channel.
I'm a lefty, I throw a ball with the left, I cast with my left. A right hand reel makes the best sense. What's weird is right handed people casting with their left. Just doesn't seem right.
These so called fishermen are in pre/post spawn times when you can throw anything out there and you’ll catch tons and yet this dude is getting 1 out of 20 casts . Sorry but this is extremely a poor video. Try doing a video in the middle of summer with this chatterbait and it will even be worse. Don’t quit your day job.
Not sure if that statement was a negative one or not . Don’t really care . But I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. Did the “OV “ up around the Ottawa/ Kingston area (those are around the Toronto Ontario Canada) .Did the Southwest Bass Association in southern Ontario. Did the Red Man Tournament in Ohio( USA) . That was back in the ‘80s & ‘90s . I’m 75 now ,no tournament, but still fish a lot in Lake St. Clair and the Detroit river system. Hope that will suffice your mind .

Hard bottom use it like cray fish pull it with pole up let it drop to bottom keep it close bottom early spring cold weather work it slow
Sonar is for the birds try using the skills you should have learned as a child. 0:00
I’m about to start learning to fish a chatterbait once they come in.
Great advice
Same here bs if you ask me he is in a stocked pond that u can catch anything of worm lizard spinnerbait
I'm aright hander but real lefty. It makes sense to me
Another Pro telling another pro you are doing it all wrong! I am doing all right! This is funny!
Well what if you fish old school without a fish finder to see all that
Sorry, winding over pulling does not change the direction of the chatterbaits reaction.
What is fresh grass?
Good one
Thanks
The last retrieve was kinda like fishing a hair jig
Yes, pretty much exactly like it!
Just got a bunch of the Evo type, what type of line should i use? Can i use braid?
SUPER HOT TIPS" THANX in IDAHO! jd
I’m with you! If I could only have one bait the chatter bait would be it! Thanks for another great vid👍
Thanks for watching!
Hahahahaha
So what I got out of this, is there isn't a wrong way to fish this bait. You just do what you want with this bait
.
Same techniques you use with a spinner bait, swim jig, crank bait or any other horizonal bait.
To a certain extent, that is true.
Are you left-handed or right-handed
Right
@@SonarFishing question for you if I want to reel in with my left hand on a baitcaster which one do I order?
@@TheAverageMiz To be honest, this is all up to your budget as far as what brand or model to choose. What I can recommend is if you’re trying to get the most versatile reel you can, get one with a gear ratio in the 7 gear ratio range (like 7.2:1 for example). This gear ratio is great for most situations in bass fishing. Other than that, I personally use the Fitzgerald VLD10’s : amzn.to/4cifrMt
I like how this was broke down In chapters
I love chatterbaits but I catch so damn many big channel cats on them it pisses me off!
Like every other lure in existence, you try all different techniques with it.
Really good video!! ...but stop holding bass at angles while lipping them, unless you're throwing them in a frying pan after!! ...killing the fish by busting up their jaw (@2:29 you held the bass @nearlhy a 180 degree angle.. GEEZ bro0 learn how to handle a fish)
Jigging it works
I don’t know that I’ve ever seen someone catch a fish when showing people how to fish…
Lol. How would you know if it actually works! I’ve got a few videos like that so hopefully you’ll like those too. Thanks
Haha, shouldn't the title of this video be called, there's no wrong way to fish a ChatterBait?
Yes, it definitely should….but then nobody would watch! Lol. Thanks
@@SonarFishing “Well, hell, at least you're honest. I can respect that part.” 🤝🏼
@@Real_Talk411 I really try to be. To be honest, it’s really frustrating how click-baity you have to make titles these days for the TH-cam algorithm to get your videos put out there. My content hopefully speaks for itself once people watch. That being said, as I’ve told other viewers, I will never throw any individual under the bus on my videos or titles to get views. That’s a line I strive never to cross on this channel. Thanks for watching man!
how can you fish it "wrong"? lol
Man look at those chemtrails.
A lil rant. I hate fishing vidoes the are call "what you're doing wrong" "mistskes everyone makes" not gonna watch those.
Try this for a title " help with your chatter bait" " get better with your chatter bait" ill eaych those.
Im in sales.
💞Wow🤍🤍🧡🧡🤍🧡🧡🧡
The one and only way to fish. Makes absolutely no sense to use a Right Hand reel ecxept you are a left handed Person.
I'm a lefty, I throw a ball with the left, I cast with my left. A right hand reel makes the best sense. What's weird is right handed people casting with their left. Just doesn't seem right.
Another guy thinking his way is the best. Not a professional.
This is my day-job. I hope you find another one of my videos more helpful.
@@SonarFishing I realize how tough this can be because I ran the tournament circuit up here in Canada. All the best in 2024 .
@@jimboyko2854Sure you did 😮
Not sure if that statement was a negative one or not .
Yeah…. Well you’re still a Canadian so there’s that
