  • I have gotten several inquiries about concealed carry and riding a motorcycle. You don't take time off from your Active Self Protection because you're on a bike! Do you do anything different as far as CCW when you hit the open road?

    The NRA emblem on the back of your helmet gives a hint to an undesirable that you may be armed. I'm a Benefactor NRA member but have removed all gun related identification from my car to reduce the risk of a break-in.

      There’s a lot of options here in the us that have oversized trigger guards. It’s pretty common in general I think. My AR .22 and 9mm handgun have it haha

    Have you ever gone down on a motorcycle? From sad experience, I can assure you that even something as small as a key ring will do massive damage (internal bleeding, thigh black hip to knee). So, now I never put hard things on my body when riding. From my experience, TDub is right, a gun on the waist could easily break your pelvis in a crash. As you said, you don't need to draw while riding. Put it in a tank bag. One you can pull off easily and carry. Love your channel BTW.

    I work in law enforcement I carry on my appendix and ankle. Ankle depends on what riding boots or shoes I’m wearing. This video is very informative and I think the hardest thing is finding gloves so u can operate your firearm if you have to and grip it well. Great video keep up the good work.

      TDubsKid somewhat related. many years ago I had my old Nextel on my hip and rolled the car. the side to side violent slamming bruised me from my arm pit to my thigh. I was basically immobile for 3 weeks just because so much bruising happened. worth considering. I pocket carry now right at cargo short height. if I ever fell or crashed or whatever it's on the side of my leg in a place where it will likely hurt me very very little. it's also super concealed.

      I know every situation is different, but a few years ago my uncle had an unexpected dismount when a car hit him. He was carrying his gun on his back or kidney(not fully sure but thats where he normally carries) to my knowledge he didnt have any significant injuries due to the gun being there. His Dr said that if he'd been ankle carrying as he often does, it would have shattered his ankle.

    Really good video. I never thought of taking safety gear to the range, I'll have to try it. One small thing: I love appendix/IWB for every day, but the safest holster on a motorcycle is a shoulder holster. Ordinarily, I don't like them, but if you're wearing a jacket anyways, they are really quite doable. The issue really comes up in anticipating crashes: with appendix/IWB, you're going to potentially break your hip/back if you land on it in a crash. With shoulder holsters, you are much less likely to break something.
    TL;DR - IWB/Appendix is great for driving/everyday carry, but shoulder holsters are the safest for motorcycle riding in crashes.

And then 400 the next day. And then rode "the tail of the dragon", what a great vacation! Anyway love yours, and reallly really love the older red white and blue ones.. Hope this riding season is treating you good. P.S. I got a givi tanklock tankbag for it and its been great. doesnt scuff the tank and can hold more than I thought!

    I can't seem to find pants for riding that: 1. Have useable pockets for stuff, 2. Have adequate protection, AND 3. Allow me to carry either IWB or OWB concealed, where I can actually access them. Dedicated riding pants protect well, but have no pockets or super shallow ones and no belt loops; chaps/overpants usually don't have any padding, only slide protection; jeans make carrying easy but shred INSTANTLY in a slide, and even Kevlar-lined jeans don't often hold up well, plus they have little to no padding. Any suggestions? Choose between riding protection or bad guy protection?

    The gear I wear makes it pretty tough to get a gun into the fight. My jacket is completely secured with fasteners to my over pants so it doesn't ride up while sliding down the road if I fall. I'll have to figure something out, I do have zippered roomy pockets in my jacket...

    • @ActiveSelfProtection

      Just make sure to use a trigger guard pinned to the jacket so you don't have a negligent discharge.

    Hi, John! Could you please revisit this topic and inform if if there's more glove or jacket models that would be suitable to carry a gun wearing them while they provide protection against crashes? Like a reasonably "armored" glove that would still be slim enough to fit in the trigger guard of a handgun. Thanks!

    What about for those of us that ride with real protective gear, like 1-piece track suits? There is no good place to carry when wearing an actual riding suit, unless I wear a backpack or other bag that I can secure to my person. But then, attaching something like that to your body will greatly reduce the safety of the suit by inducing tumbling instead of sliding over the pavement. What do you think?

    • @ActiveSelfProtection
      @ActiveSelfProtection  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well first, the "real protective gear" comment was pretty condescending. A full riding jacket is a lot of gear. If you choose to wear a full leather suit to ride, then open carry.

    • @HydeMyJekyll
      @HydeMyJekyll 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not really condescending. Have you ever crashed while wearing just a helmet, jacket, gloves, and boots? I have, and the pants were insta-shredded along with a lot of my leg- it was only like 35 mph. I also took a very nasty high side and a fast low side each with a real suit on, and not a scratch on my body- picked the pieces out of the road and rode home after each of them. Riding without full gear is pretty irresponsible- please don't wait and learn the hard way, like I did. Permanent nerve damage is a bitch.

    I always get worried that my pistol will accidentally go off in it's holster for some reason... although it's not a rational fear :) Is there any tips to make sure that never happens? Keep it in a firm holster, unchambered etc I know but is that something that can happen or are you pretty much good? I usually carry in my bag instead of on my body.

    • @ActiveSelfProtection
      @ActiveSelfProtection  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't carry an unchambered firearm. It's not useful without a round in the chamber. Carry it in a quality kydex or leather holster that completely covers the trigger guard.

    • @TheVigilantStewards
      @TheVigilantStewards 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I've gotten more comfortable with it since the trigger is heavy and the holster is rigid. The only thing that bothers me is I remember some NFL player was at a bar and shot himself in the leg and I kept thinking... how could that have happened? Must've not been in holster or maybe they hired some chick to pull the trigger.

      I carry a Springfield XD .40 and it requires your palm to be holding the gun for it to activate the second safety which is a nice comfort for me. I know some people who practice speed drills and have had their shirt get pulled into the holster with the gun and squeeze the trigger... luckily a round was not in the chamber. Just practice re-holstering and clearing obstructions and you should be good.

    Couple things - I do carry when I ride and actually use my 5.11 shooting gloves. They have padding on the palms and although I don't know for sure how they would hold up in an accident, I feel they are better than nothing. Second - do you think it's wise to have an NRA sticker on your helmet? Some unsavories may see that as an advertisement that you have a gun and try to eliminate any threat before you can react. I always carry the same position as I normally would so you dont have to think any different. If im riding im not gonna drink, and I wouldnt drink with a gun on me either : ) I like a velcro strap (Im cheap bit they work) to keep my firearm secure because my fear of having my firaeam fall out of holster in a motor accident is greater than my fear of drawing quickly.
    You dont get any looks for the NRA sticker on he helm either?

    Number one reason I dont appendix carry. My bike is my daily driver, and I dont want to have to stop completely, turn the bike off or get the bike in neutral, and then try to get to my firearm if I ever have to draw. Would rather just either draw while moving, or even while coming to a stop have the option to draw.

    • @MWhite-dv1uu
      @MWhite-dv1uu 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      all that is possible with appendix carry..

    • @AnAZPatriot
      @AnAZPatriot 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not if you're right handed. Ever try hitting the brakes while reaching over to your gun? And before you say just use the back brake, ever try to come to a fast stop with just the back brake on a bike? Its fun when the rear tire comes loose :) The front brakes are used for stopping, not the rear ones, and the front brake handle is on the right grip.

    • @MWhite-dv1uu
      @MWhite-dv1uu 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      AnAZPatriot that is a good point.. I'd argue both brakes are used for stopping though. have you seen the video of the south African motorcycle cop chasing and shooting at criminals in a car?
      anyway, appendix carry is not going to interfere any more or less than strong side carry, with the bikes controls. You'd have the same problems. Appendix will be easier for some people to draw.
