THANK YOU for making this video. I just bought my first motorcycle today, brought it home on a trailer and had no idea how to ride. I’ve watched this video a bunch of times and watched it as I was sitting on the bike. By using the “roll it into first without any throttle” technique, I figured out first gear and started riding within a 10-15 mins. Very helpful and everyone should try this if it’s your first time!
This vid was extremely helpful! I've never ridden with a clutch before and I ended up with my mom's 2008 Yamaha raptor. I used the steps with practicing with no throttle and I finally got it! Thank you and keep up the good work!

Dan, I saw this video 4 years ago when I was head over heels at the thought of even being able to rev someone else’s motorcycle. I watched this video once a month almost religiously. And then it happened in May 2021 I took the MSF course so that if I still wanted to ride I was licensed, otherwise I was only out $150. FLASH FORWARD TO 2022 I buy my first bike in February, a black Ninja 400, wonderful bike, had a low side within the first week, learned how to actually turn, brake properly, body position and basic maintenance. Now as of two weeks ago I have my very own 2008 R6, flashed tuned, custom exhaust, almost custom everything, it is an absolute blast! Dan I owe it all to you and your motovlogs that I was able to participate in this hobby, hopefully I get to ride with you soon! -Dislexiiq

I think the most important step I tell everyone when I teach was missed here. If anything goes wrong pull in the clutch first. This way no matter what they have done with the throttle they are now coasting. This prevents whiskey throttle. It’s absolutely the first and most important thing you can tell anyone there first time on a bike. I can’t stress it enough. If anything goes wrong PULL IN THE CLUTCH!!! With the clutch in even full throttle you are coasting and this gives you the time needed to find your brakes and stop the bike. This is a excellent teaching video and I do also recommend the taking off without any throttle just like he demonstrated here.
Tips I learned while self teaching (Technically it was in a lesson but they kind of just gave us a bike and told us to go fuck around with it untill we figure it out, and we happy obliged)
A) Don't start learning when it's cold or rainy outside, cold does not do well for the tires.
B) Mark your figure 8s, you don't want to do it randomly by the end (Of the day) you need to be able to do quite tight figure 8s, work on them as much as needed.
C) Learn in a controlled enviorment, you shouldn't attempt to go out to the streets early on, no point, when you are in full control in a parking lot only than attempt street riding.
D) Mark a straight and relatively narrow line (Long) in your practicing area, ride slowly through it at around 3mph in 1st gear and only use the engine to push you forward and the cluth to slow down, no brakes and no throttle, this will give you a nice balance in the slows (You are not always going to go fast). Needless to say you can't put your foot down unless it's to stop yourself from falling as that's just common sense, but consider it an F grade if you do.
E) If given the option start on an automatic bike/scooter, on it it's easier to learn throttle control, it will only take you around 10mins to get the gist of it but will give you the information you need without needlessly worrying about clutch.
F) Do not be afraid to lean a bit, you're not racers but you don't need to attempt to only steer with the handle bar, from the moment you sit your fatass on that bike it is a part of your body and you need to treat it as such.
G) If the bike is garbage don't bother, you will learn things which are not correct in most cases, for example one of the bikes I rode did not idle or even hold any RPM without me constantly feeding it throttle and would have a very violent stall that would send the bike forward hard and the bike was heavy resulting in me on the floor and my pride underground.
H) Don't redline, no point, ride slow and safe at the start, switch gears even before the power peaks for all I care.
I) The front brake is quite harsh on most bikes, while it is the most important brake it shouldn't be used in the parking lot you practice in, use the rear brake you are not gonna go fast enough to need it, before you hit the streets gently touch the front brake, see how powerful it is, one of the most common rookie mistakes is fisting that front brake.
And the most important thing of them all, have fun! Remember this is not torture, don't make it hard on yourself, don't be stiff loosen up, it will help you get confident.
This is exactly how I taught my wife to ride her motorcycle. Informative and funny. I dig it.
The "i would make a great nascar driver" line actually made me laugh out loud.

THANK YOU. This is the best first video a new rider could watch. Taking the throttle out of the equation to start is the best advice.
I have my full licence but never rode a manual and I was so nervous to switch to a manual. It sounds silly, I've been riding for two years but I was so scared! I jumped on the bike today and sat there for about 10 minutes, kind of terrified. I started with your advice, walking the bike, etc. Within an hour I was crushing around having a blast. Thanks for helping me CRUSH this fear!!!
I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler that has a manual transmission. Dan is right about feathering the clutch. It just helps to get a feel for it I guess. Driving a stick shift is like second nature to me. Though when people drive 45 mph, I have to pick either 4th gear or 5th gear. That is one of the most annoying things about driving a manual sometimes. Dan also makes a great point in practicing in a parking lot where nobody is around. I don’t have a motorcycle but I do have a bicycle. Though, driving the Jeep is so much fun because you experience the openness and the wind rush past you and everything. Sorry for this BS. XD
The first step was funny, especially the “I would be a great nascar driver”
Literally got my motorcycle today an iron 883. Been watching alot of videos on how to learn. And by far your way was the most simple and a confident booster . Thank you.
This was really easy to understand and fun to watch. Once I do end up getting a motorcycle one day, I'll be sure to rewatch this video and start to practice everything. I never really understood how the clutch worked on bikes but now you've given me a better understanding, as well with how to change gears. Great video!

This video helped me a lot, I just got a bike a month ago and don't have any friends to ride with, letting the clutch out slowly and have it go on itself without giving throttle is of utmost importance and got me so much better at it... thats something not many videos teach you, they usually just say give it throttle, and that causes so many drops
Don’t mind me just watching these types of videos. So when I am 17 ( in 2 months) I’ll feel less nervous riding for the first time (my 125cc ) as I’m gaining knowledge.

I'd love to know how to down shift when we are coming to a stop. or say a sudden stop. Do we just hit the break without downshift all the way down to one? please I need this.
JP 4Menzies look up rev matching. Basically engine braking.
Reality rupture Look up how to rev match while decelerating your motorcycle and coming to a stop, I ride just a small ninja 300 but I have gotten into the habit of practicing my rev matching while slowing down, when it comes to a sudden stop just pull in the brake, press on the rear brake as well, and pull the clutch in, this disengages the bike and essentially puts you into neutral with the clutch pulled in, then when stopped just shift down to first, Hope this helped :)
Reality rupture sorry this is so late, usually I like to shift down into second gear while slowing down with the clutch pulled in and let the bike roll into a stop, then when im stopped I shift down into first and keep the clutch pulled in until the light changes to green!
@@C0LS0N bzzt, wrong. Rev matching to downshift is irrelevant to sudden stops.
For sudden stops (avoiding a crash, whatever):
Just squeeze the lever until whatever the problem was about to be, isn't. You only need to pull in the clutch before you stop moving. Unless your bike is a piece of shit, you can then press down on the shifter until it won't move anymore. Now you're in first. Ride somewhere else.
I've been riding for 13 years and I've had like...8? I don't know, lots of bikes. 250s to 1200s. That's how it works.

This is going to seem like a complete noob question, because, well it is.
When coming to a stop at, for example, traffic light are you meant to:
Brake to slow down and shift down the gears into first while braking ( then neutral once stopped)
Shift down all the gears to first and then brake
Or brake to stop and then shift down the gears once stopped.
I think it's the first option but I heard applying brake and clutch at the same time is bad, thanks for the help in advance.
Best way is to use rev match. Meaning you will shift down and release the clutch for each gear. In most cases you wont even need the brakes then as the engine will do the braking, but use brakes in parallel with this if needed, and if it turns green before you come to a complete stop you are already good to go and can just apply throttle. This is also good for corners in intersections. Brake and down shift with rev match before you come to the intersection and you can turn safely and apply throttle when going out of the corner. Releasing the clutch while turning can have interesting effects, as a beginner I found it really hard to tell which gear I was in so rev matching was really helpful for me.
If in a situation you have to come to a sudden complete stop apply breaks and clutch, shift down to 1st gear while braking. When stopped you can put your left leg down. This way you are all ready to go again straight off and you'll also be able to use rear brake in case of in climb or so.
General rule is to be ready to go on the spot.
Using neutral isn't really useful while driving. Unless you are at a complete stop for a while and want to rest your hands/legs while trains are crossing or so.
I started riding with a 1000cc and i feel like im gonna die every time i touch the throttle. Help!

But that clutch got me stressing big time! The walking thing makes so much more sense and I wonder why my instructor didn’t make me do that before letting me use the throttle! Thumps up!

press down 5x i
believe
Sudden brake at 6th gears will give you wings
Ok so I'm a 1 month motorcycle rider. The answer is, at 6th gear, from far distance you have to slow down and match the speed to 5th gear and goes on like that till 1st gear. Or you can just brake slowly till you stop then switch to 1st gear.
Holy shit you're actrually serious for once

The bike won’t always move just on clutch release. You’ll have to give it gas while letting the clutch out.
Juel George nope you dont

D' Son Sabor Band niceeeeee 👍🏻
Well I came here so early, I nearly beat the time Dan can last in bed.
may I ask why is it hard for me to shift from gear 2 to 3?
Only issue with some of these is that us EuroBros will start on much smaller bikes, like 50s or 125s, which will stall basically as soon as you let off the clutch without gas as it doesn't have enough power to move off necessarily.
I don’t understand is he clutching the left “brake” to change gears
the left "brake" is the clutch, so yes.
Yeah, the left "brake" is the clutch and the right is the front brake. Normally the back brake is controlled with your right foot
Yes the left thing is the clutch you have to use it ale the time when you're shifting the gears
