That's been a big problem with several video game movie adaptations, tlthe director amd actors have either never played the games or even heard of it. It's happened with Borderlands, Uncharted, and unfortunately the new Yakuza show due to come out soon
One thing that bothers me... WHY are there Piglins in the Overworld? They literally zombify if they leave the Nether. They fundamentally should not be able to be the villains of this movie. In Minecraft Legends they at least had a reason for the Piglins being able to go through (using Nether Spreaders to convert their bases to the Nether and stuff like that), but here's they're just kinda chilling with no issue.
Edit: apparently my agreement and pointing out piglins didn't change in Legends is the most controversial comment ever. Gods this is stupid They did the same with the piglins in the Legends game, it's so uncanny. They easily could've had them go to the nether which would've been a fun show of how different they are. Not redeemable, but at least it'd have that smh
@@lasercraft32 why the hostility? I did read it. Yeah the piglins had a reason to go through in Legends, but they never zombified?? I played release day, so maybe they changed it but still
I’ve seen a lot of people excuse that by saying it’s something they can do in Minecraft Legends, but that’s a spin-off that was notoriously hated on release. They should really try to reference the main game more then the spin-offs here. And, if they are going down the Legends route, they have to mention how the Piglins can survive in the Overworld, or else it’ll look really lazy and add another bruise to an already bad movie.
In Minecraft Legends it was revealed Piglin's could fill the Overworld's air with mushroom spores to make it breathable. But in that situation they had an entire third of their army and huge machines dedicated to growing and spreading those spores, while here they're just a smaller band of foot soldiers so far.
@@Key-Knight87 or they’ve never played the game so they have no idea that piglins are supposed to become zombified, and there will be no explanation. Both are equally likely imo
My opinion? It's a marketing option. Sure, they could make an actually good looking film with good cgi and a good plot with lovable characters and a bearable storyline. But instead, they know they can make a bad film for cheap because they know that its going to get attention for looking terrible. They know it looks bad. It's practically rage bait.
Are you sure they made this movie for cheap? I checked it's production cost 150milion$ which make it high level budget movie. With that, your argument doesn't hold
easy story idea: prequel to minecraft dungeons, explaining the origins of the orb of dominance. barely anything from dungeons would actually show up apart from the orb itself (which is just an evil mcguffin) and the flora and fauna of the end (which don't need to be explained) so it's not like mcd would be required material before watching, it'd give us some more insight into what the world in the end is actually supposed to look like, and it could use the artstyle they use for the promotional animations
And Sonic The GOD DAMN Hedgehog continues to set the bar too high for live action video game movies. Not EVERY video game movie NEEDS to be live action, and it looks like the only ones that WORKED in that setting are Detective Pikachu and Sonic..For some reason. If you had looked me in the eye back when we had Ugly Sonic and said "no no wait it out give them 4 months, they're gonna change Sonic to make him look cute, and the movie is gonna be so lit and make so much money that they're gonna have TWO MORE with Knuckles, Tails and Shadow in them." I'd have laughed in your face.
I think it worked with Sonic and detective Pikachu because it is normal to see cartoony creatures interacting with humans in their games, so it translates better to a live action setting.
I mean id say live action “worked” for the monster hunter movie, the monsters themselves looked beautiful… it’s just LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE that sucked
@@ratinrat Bingo. I never understood why a good portion of people had such an issue with Sonic being on Earth and interacting with humanity. It almost feels like the producers made every wrong decision because they know that many of us are still going to watch because we hate it. Hate watching films are really ruining the fun again.
It would have been so cool if they had gone full live-action with this, with a "Lord of the Rings" style. The story could be simple-maybe a romance between Alex and Steve, a survival tale, or a deeper, emotional story about being the last of their kind. And with MatPat’s theories, they could even save their ancestors-the Endermen-from the Ender Dragon. Or maybe all of that combined! It wouldn’t be a kids' movie, but it would be a great one. Just imagine: real-life Soul Sand, with minds bound to cursed sand, suffering forever; ghasts-ever-crying ghost-like creatures; the undead roaming the night; and Endermen-warped, corrupted versions of their own species.

You know what would've been really interesting? What if they made a wall-e esque protagonist with Steve. The entire point of Steve, and by extension Alex, is that they're blank slates which you can impose any characteristics onto, so you could make him silent. Now here's an idea, you could have other characters, maybe pillagers, be the ones who talk and allow for some exposition. Here's a fun idea for the older fans of the game, or those who have nostalgia from the game, make herobrine a main antagonist, maybe he's in creative mode and he's going around destroying iconic builds and Steve is the only one who can stop him, basic? Sure, but it's better than whatever I had there's displeasure of viewing.
And what did the two live action movies have in common, oh that's right they didn't use fucking CGI for their entire world, the Mario movie even knew that a fantastical world and it's iconic characters would be better suited in an Animated style, so what's your excuse Minecraft, oh what do you mean you thought pumping human characters we don't give a damn about into a completely CGI world was a bad idea while also ripping off Jumanji and clearly showing no care to the source material, instead looking like a pixel gun knockoff (jk obviously, big studios never admit their mistakes until after they went beyond just screwing up), and that's without even mentioning the story and care put into those other movies, this one thought casting jack black for a character with a completely different mood and build, no offense to jack black ofc, he is obviously a good actor for these adaptations, he is just not steve
2:54 I think for the longest time the best plot they could've chosen for a movie like this would've been an invasion of the Overworld from the Nether. The Fallen Kingdom animated music video series probably had the perfect plot for a Minecraft movie if they just took that and extended it to a feature film length.
11:06 you are absolutely correct. Not everyone knows this fact but "Steve" is not Steve's actual name, it's "Steve?" with a question mark to symbolize the fact that not even the developers actually know what this character's name is called because he has no story, he is just a stand in for the player. He practically doesn't actually exist.
They should have done something like Mincraft Story mode and less of half live action where the entire scenery is almost fully CGI and real people do where slightly more jumanji where they go in the game and turn into Minecraft characters and not stay “people”
the acting seems rather lackluster as well. they aren't even freaking out they are just casually walking around in a "well that's just happened" typa way lol.
Apparently, Warner Bros was going to make an animated Minecraft movie directed by Rob McElhenney (Mac from It's Always Sunny). Hollywood, why can't you give us nice things?
The only nice things that happened was the 2 Video game adaptation shows, Last of Us and Fallout. They basically respected the Source material to make these masterpiece. For this Movie, It looks like they just took basically half of the story of Minecraft Legends and not the Original because of the Piglin War in the story.
My main question about Minecraft stuff in general is why is it that the piglins are becoming like the mainstays of the franchise? Why are they always the villains now? Whatever happened to the 5 or so overworld mobs that gave everyone a headache and a half for their first year playing the game? Piglins aren't even special really, they're just villagers with arguably less depth.
piglins are way better villains than overworld mobs because overworld mobs (excluding wardens) aren't much of a threat. But Pillagers are a good choice as well
@@Itz_Spike Piglins are no more of a threat then Pillagers are. They should've used the pillagers as the main bad guys, the piglins cant even go to the overworld without being zombified. Just another out of touch decision by corporate.
Why? like try to write a good story where minecraft zombies/spiders/skellies/creepers are the villain... Piglins are MUCH more interesting in that regard lol... the overworld hostile mobs are either a corps or a overgrown/badly made animal (refering to creeper bein a messed up pig originally) and still the main enemy IS going to be the Ender dragon from what i have heard so its not like the piglins are going to take his place entirely. If i wanted an overworld mob to be the "main" enemy beside the enderdragon i would rather take the pillagers than the original 4
@@chat4783 You would actually want the two fictional characters created by the comunity to be the main enemy instead of the final boss of the games itself?????
@eastymii honestly, i think I'm personally more inclined to believe that the idea isn't the most important thing, but the execution. Zombie apocalypse stories exist for, idk, over a hundred years? And they still make original and interesting stories about this idea. But I get what you mean. I didn't like anything I've seen about the Minecraft movie so far
They really should have gone the Lego movie route, imagine the visual comedy and inside gags when they arrive at Steve's home and it's a hell hole of automatic mob grinders and villager work camps

Jason mamoa would have fit the steve aesthetic far more closely. Also, feels like they just are making a Minecraft Legends movie spin and not actual Minecraft.
Sooo… when I think of Minecraft villains, I really don’t think of piglins. If anything piglins are more of chaotic allies in Minecraft. A far more fitting villain would be the illagers, the enderdragon, or even just the hostile entities of the overworld (like you said). I don’t really know why Mojang is really pushing piglins as the new Minecraft villains. Illagers and the end fit so much better.
The current movie draft was in production around the same time Minecraft Legends (a spin-off game in which piglins were the villains) was in development, leading them to borrow ideas.
honestly this movie feels like its an insult to the game and the entire community :( There's so many possibilities with a game like minecraft and they came up with this...
I'm getting frustrated because I have seen people defending this and attack people who express concerns. Fine, it looks absolutely silly and that's fine. But there are objective issues regarding how lazily they are using live action. The VFX looks pretty great... but the way that they composite the actors DOES NOT WORK! Like they didn't even try... lighting inconsistencies and green screen artifacts. It's just frustrating that even when venturing into expanded media... they still don't try.
Look at the wide shot where they are walking from the portal... the actors have long stretching shadows... But every other element in the scene has spot shadows!!!
It could be possible that you have seen my comment on another video. I agree with you. The CGI and VFX? Good! The blending of live action and CGI? Mighty shitty.
Very obvious the producers didn’t even play the game. This is beyond disappointing. I was hoping for a fully live action with realistic cgi instead of just jumanji but with a minecraft coat of paint. I wish they leaned into the dark undertones and mysteries of the minecraft world instead of this ugly live action fantasy style mix that really clashes. Incredibly greedy, lazy, and disappointing. Hopefully we can bully them into fixing it again like sonic.
8:52 The Playmobil movie may have been a lazy ripoff of the Lego movie, but at least they animated the characters when they entered the Playmobil world.

The funny thing about bringing up the Fnaf movie in this video being the good ending is that Warner Brothers was originally supposed to be the company behind the movie, but Scott didn't like the direction the movie was being taken and scrapped everything to find a different company. It was a big reason the movie was delayed for so long. Seeing what they're doing with this video game movie, I think delaying it by so many years was well worth it.

I remember rly liking this simplistic short film a group of teens made and shared on TH-cam. It was a group of friends from our world who stumbled upon a nether portal irl. They dared one another to enter it, and in the end they all did. Then they entered the world of Minecraft (literally) and they soon realised in horror they were stuck there. The film centered around them figuring out how to get by, with the underlying existential fear of never going back home. They eventually met Steve who helped them build a portal that brought them back.
The Portal being blue actually makes kinda sense. If it were purple they would be coming from the nether which they obviously aren't. And if it were the end Portal, it would make even less sense. So it being blue its actually not that inaccurate. They could have given it any color besides the two and it would be fine. And ik the glow stone portal was blue, but first of it was made from glow stone and not obsidian and second it was a different shade. Also i am not sure if it ever was made canon. That was the only thing i wanted to correct. Unless there is another obsidian portal i dont know about.
In Story Mode there was an entire hallway made of portals that traveled to different realms. Most weren't Obsidian, but each had an entirely different color based on what world it went to. A similar thing happened with the InfinityDimensions April Fools thing they did a couple years back, where they *were* Obsidian and came in different colors. So yeah, Obsidian ring with a blue portal is fine.

How can you call this live action when the only live action things are the people? You can’t make a movie 95% CGI and call it live action. The LEGO MOVIE had more live action in it than what we’ve seen so far with this, and that technically wasn’t even a live action movie 😭😭
I think there's three important things here everyone should know when it comes to this movie: 1. Minecraft already have character models they could of used for animation (shown in the video by the axolotls and ender guardians at one point) 2. This was YEARS in the making 3. The director said himself they didn't want the movie to have the same uncanny feeling as what beta movie sonic looked like

Yeah- it is pretty concerning. The fact Piglins aren't turning zombified in the overworld bugs me the most. Here's to hoping it's at least... ok?

2:54 I think for the longest time the best plot they could've chosen for a movie like this would've been an invasion of the Overworld from the Nether. The Fallen Kingdom animated music video series probably had the perfect plot for a Minecraft movie if they just took that and extended it to a feature film length.
But they did that with the piglins in the movie

For this Movie, It looks like they just took basically half of the story of Minecraft Legends and not the Original because of the Piglin War in the story.
Jack Black is a parody of himself at this point
Fun fact Steve Correl was going to be casted as Steve as it was going to be fully CG animated.
The better timeline
I know its for kids, but I didn't even know Jack Black was Steve in the trailer until he said he was. That's just sad.

@@heyheyitsjae2475 i know it could be a possibility, but Dazz said it was an inconsistency, which obviously isn't true. But i realized after watching it myself theere were a lot of other wrong things (2 buckets being crafted with a rope attached to it)
This movie from the trailer appears to take inspiration from Minecraft legends.
We don't know anything about the Plot, But i have 95% sure, is gonna be worse and more generic than Any Musical Animation Parodies videos that Minecraft had it through the years
Jack Black singing a song called 'Apples' 💀
On the bright side people are going to reconsider their hate for story mode, at least that game was creative (story mode is peak)
@@ythegamerita frfr MCSM was awesome
Why are they dressed like that? 2011 isnt the 80’s
its probably going to be some 'minecraft isnt a videogame, its a world' crap, so it wont matter what decade its in
Honestly they should have just made the movie a scripted forge labs type 2 hour video. With the live action only taking place where characters leave the desk and go back to regular life. Imagine an epic fight scene in the nether immediately cutting to the player character getting called to dinner, and the awkward acting while the actors eat something. itd feel more relatable than people gettig sucked into the game
Bruh they really put a blue shirt on jack black and called him steve.
Honestly, a re-animated version of Minecraft story mode season 1 would’ve worked 1000x better
There kinda is, I think? There's a remake being made, though I don't know if it's fanmade or not, still cool though, and it looks much better then this movie 💀
@@paradoxtatorstudios9681fanmade
get captain sparkles to fix the animation
How can you call this live action when the only live action things are the people? You can’t make a movie 95% CGI and call it live action. The LEGO MOVIE had more live action in it than what we’ve seen so far with this, and that technically wasn’t even a live action movie 😭😭
After seeing the teaser trailer, where's that Crafting Table when you need the most in fixing this 😂😂
Looks like a mobile game ad.
I do not think the movie is salvageable.
I think there's three important things here everyone should know when it comes to this movie:
1. Minecraft already have character models they could of used for animation (shown in the video by the axolotls and ender guardians at one point)
2. This was YEARS in the making
3. The director said himself they didn't want the movie to have the same uncanny feeling as what beta movie sonic looked like
Was asking for 2 hours of jack black actually playing Minecraft too much?
they should of done in the style of 1980s fantasy movies with puppets and practical effects like Labyrinth and Neverending Story
If they go into a portal and end up in the Overworld, does that mean that they came from the Nether?
Also, why can't they just go back?
It was a “real life” portal
The more you analyze the trailer the worse it gets: it’s like the team was told Minecraft looks like the real world but it’s made with blocks and only referenced some of the animals in Minecraft
