It’s so surreal that in two months it will be over twenty years since this movie was released to theaters, along with the fact that this film was my introduction to Scarlett Johansson who voices Princess Mindy. In fact it’s one of the few SpongeBob media (film, series episodes, etc.) that Mr. Krabs never meets nor acknowledges Plankton the other being "Band Geeks"

I like to think Neptune got older, mainly because it takes place 31 years later. I also like to think he had another child after Triton, explaining why he's not there and why Mindy is here.
Nice Little Detail regarding the Thug-Tug Scene: The Music playing in the Background is a remade Version of "You Better Run" by Motörhead, however since they are underwater they rewrote the Song to "You Better Swim". It's such a small and really unnessecary Detail, but it shows how much love was put into this movie.

He didn’t necessarily say that, but he said things that made it sound like he was implying it. Not helped by how he’s the same jerk who insulted all Frozen 2 fans.
I think parody is mostly used in movies and shows like this to drop their own characters into that popular story, while in this movie especially it's homage moreso, which I've noticed is more based on inserting story elements and tropes into your own story, using the tropes organically rather than just blindly referencing it.
21:44 Fun Fact, the giant red fish that attempts to eat sponge bob and Patrick is actually based on a frog fish. It's a real fish and they in fact use tactics similar to an angler fish to lure their pray AKA food. Though they use a wiggly tissue of sorts on their body like a fishing poll almost as if frog fish are fisherman of sorts attempting to lore fish with bait.
All the marketing being focused on only the last 20 minutes of the movie was pretty shitty though ngl. I'd prefer if it just stayed 2D the whole way through.
I think that the part in the movie with the comic-style gag you were talking about is a reference to Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy? I'm not sure. I just remember seeing this gag in a Spongebob episode about Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.
At the scene where they depart with the Patty wagen from the Krusty Krab in the german version the say: Wir sind, außer Haus! what means like we are to go like the license plate says which makes this scene in my opinion even better.
15:42 ... I thought that was pretty obvious that the "Ka Patty" Comic strip was a reference to classic Batman with the whole bat mobile / Patty Wagon (Mobile)?
I wasn't allowed to watch any kids TV growing up; no Nickelodeon, Disney or Disney XD, cartoon network, any of that. I was allowed to watch boomerang and some Disney/ a few other movies. When I was 15, I was over at my high school boyfriends house and he made a SpongeBob reference that I didn't get, and when he found out I had never seen a single episode, he put on The Movie. I was hooked lol and can now quote episodes like a normal person. My point is, you're absolutely right that the opening scenes do everything they need to do in order to set up who the characters are and their roles/motivations. I had some knowledge of the show (SpongeBob and Patrick are friends, Squidward is grumpy and doesn't like SpongeBob, but that was about it), and I immediately understood the dynamics and character traits and it made it super easy to get into the movie without having to ask a bunch of questions, and just enjoy the ride, and then I actually had a good idea going into the show of what to expect.
ok i just wanna add, Scarlett Johansson's role as mindy is so seamless i genuinely didnt know she was a celebrity, let alone who, until you said it. (granted im not very good at recognising voice actors buuuuttt- i just thought she was a regular voice actor because it fit her character so well.
The odd "Ker Patty" thing kind of reminds me of the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episodes that mimicked and parodied the old Batman comic style. Though it is still out of place.
Arguably one of the most important films in my life. Ween is one of, if not my favorite band EVER. Stephen Hillenburg was a massive fan, and their work up until 1999 was INCREDIBLY influential to Spongbob. As much if not MORESO than Marine Biology.
It's honestly wild that it has been 20 years since the release of the first SpongeBob movie, and I've had a lot of fond memories of watching this movie for the first time, and even during reruns on TV! Also by the time I made this comment, I now realized that today is the 20th Anniversary of 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie' This movie definitely holds a special place in my heart and a special place in my entire childhood! And not only that, its also an absolute classic and an absolute masterpiece of cinema in animation history! I'm still surprised by the fact that they even got David Hasselhoff to be involved in the movie as a whole, and speaking of which the entire cast & crew that were involved in the production of this movie have all done a fantastic job! Anyways, Happy 20th Anniversary to one of the best movies of all time, 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie'!

They should've made a scene of Princess Mindy thanking David Hasselhoff for bringing SpongeBob, Patrick, and King Neptune's crown back to Bikini Bottom.
If anyone is wondering what the album is that inspired Spongebob, it's "The Mollusk" by Ween. An incredible album Ween also did the "Loop De Loop" song as well
3:44 I honestly wish that I wasn't such an idiot kid that couldn't follow premises and setup, because this sets up Spongebob's goal of being the manager PERFECTLY. When I was a kid, I just saw the movie like this. * A bunch of pirates finding treasure, signing and visiting a random cinema. * A guy not having any cheese on his krabby patty and spongebob helps him out. * Spongebob's goofy morning routine (this was honestly the highlight of the movie for me, it was so funny). I never even realized how these different scenes flowed together to create a central narrative. I really wish I could just forget this movie and watch it again for the first time :(
the first movie isn't the canon ending to the series that's a rumor that spawned from people misinterpreting what Stephen Hillenburg said in one interview, where he said the movie was supposed to be the grand finale to the show, not the end of the timeline modern episodes and movies even reference the first movie's events with characters like Mindy and Dennis showing up, showing how the movie very clearly isn't the end of the SpongeBob timeline
For years after yhis movie came out, my family would occasionally just go "So you think I'm... Stalling...?" And even my dad would go like "YES! WHAT IS THIS, CRAZYTOWN!?"
Honestly, I like all 3. The first one is obviously the best, the second one is still really great, and the third one is ok. It’s only the fourth one that genuinely sucks
Yeah Sponge on the Run isn’t a masterpiece necessarily (after all, any movie that introduces Kamp Koral - and with the wrong spelling at that 😂- wasn’t gonna have it easy), but it’s still enjoyable if you can get past the commercialized aspects. Although obviously the first movie reigns supreme
The SpongeBob Movie (the game) for ps2 was a cornerstone of my childhood. I still remember being enamored with the aesthetic of the trench and even having dreams about it. To this day it and the level from battle for bikini bottom where you traverse the insides of a giant monster are some of my favorite level aesthetics ever.

He didn’t necessarily say that, but he said things that made it sound like he was implying it. Not helped by how he’s the same jerk who insulted all Frozen 2 fans.
Well, at least Nick said that Sponge out of water was way more similar to the og Spongebob than the series at the time
I loved the song at the end, just, the whole scene was really epic.
I still remember it fondly to this day.
Though they use a wiggly tissue of sorts on their body like a fishing poll almost as if frog fish are fisherman of sorts attempting to lore fish with bait.
they dont make their tongues fucking come to life and talk. theyre not pennywise
insane how most of the popular spongebob memes are from this movie alone
And the first 3 seasons
I am tired of the sponge out of water disrespect
Same here
same, it’s also not terrible. I don’t understand 😭
Yeah spong out of water was good
I think it was because it was released during the dead era where the show was just straight up bad

The blurry green background is likely just a representation of murky, dark water. Like going in a swamp with a misc. brown cloud
Sponge Out of Water is overhated asf
I just think it's alright. Not as bad as people say it is.
Most underrated by far
It’s because these overgrown kids think 2000s stuff is superior to other things
It's top tier for the Bubbles vs Seagull Crew rap alone
All the marketing being focused on only the last 20 minutes of the movie was pretty shitty though ngl.
I'd prefer if it just stayed 2D the whole way through.
I think that the part in the movie with the comic-style gag you were talking about is a reference to Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy? I'm not sure. I just remember seeing this gag in a Spongebob episode about Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.
Not the only cartoon to reference alcohol. Regular show characters get drunk on soda and hot sauce/wings 😂😂
At the scene where they depart with the Patty wagen from the Krusty Krab in the german version the say: Wir sind, außer Haus! what means like we are to go like the license plate says which makes this scene in my opinion even better.
I would love to hear when Spongbob does a real finally and adds some plot development that leads to this movie.
44:13 “N0w’z your chanc3 [[two]] be a [[Goofy Goober]]!”
I am gonna be honest, i cried when spongebob and patrick were dehydrated
15:42 ... I thought that was pretty obvious that the "Ka Patty" Comic strip was a reference to classic Batman with the whole bat mobile / Patty Wagon (Mobile)?
30:18 wait what. How the hell do you not know about Alexander graham bell as a grown ass man. There is nothing niche about him.
As a child I got that reference lol
seeing the sponge out of water fans unite to say their move wasnt bad brings me joy
lucky you
I actually have vague memories of watching this movie in a theater, time really does fly
you shouldve went to see the incredibles instead
I had some knowledge of the show (SpongeBob and Patrick are friends, Squidward is grumpy and doesn't like SpongeBob, but that was about it), and I immediately understood the dynamics and character traits and it made it super easy to get into the movie without having to ask a bunch of questions, and just enjoy the ride, and then I actually had a good idea going into the show of what to expect.
your parents are horrible. and your friend is horrible for not putting the show on first
24FramesOfNick war flashbacks
ok i just wanna add, Scarlett Johansson's role as mindy is so seamless i genuinely didnt know she was a celebrity, let alone who, until you said it. (granted im not very good at recognising voice actors buuuuttt- i just thought she was a regular voice actor because it fit her character so well.
The problem with celebrities is that their usually used marketing. Thats not the case here.
7:47 what's the background music here in this section?
The odd "Ker Patty" thing kind of reminds me of the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episodes that mimicked and parodied the old Batman comic style. Though it is still out of place.
Sponge Out of Water is NOT TERRIBLE, enough with the disrespect >:(
i have a list of reasons
Arguably one of the most important films in my life. Ween is one of, if not my favorite band EVER. Stephen Hillenburg was a massive fan, and their work up until 1999 was INCREDIBLY influential to Spongbob. As much if not MORESO than Marine Biology.
this movie didnt change your life
I like them all except The Sandy Cheeks Movie. It's the biggest piece of dogshit
Fr I was about to comment the exact same thing
I didn’t like advertisement movie the advertisement (the third one)
The WHAT now?!
Honestly, I also liked Sponge on the Run (except for the obvious canonicity change).
@@complex2live Yeah, Sponge on the Run has really good music like the Snoop Dogg song
It's honestly wild that it has been 20 years since the release of the first SpongeBob movie, and I've had a lot of fond memories of watching this movie for the first time, and even during reruns on TV!
Also by the time I made this comment, I now realized that today is the 20th Anniversary of 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie'
This movie definitely holds a special place in my heart and a special place in my entire childhood!
Anyways, Happy 20th Anniversary to one of the best movies of all time, 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie'!
sponge out of water gets wayyy to much hate honestly growing up i liked it just as much if not more than the first movie
Does sponge out of water have memes made based off of clips from the movie? Does people requote lines from the movie to this day?
@@Magnusmm88-wp4it to answer both questions yes and also just because a movie is quotable and has memes of it doesnt make it a good movie btw
it's ok
@@theperfectbeing765 i dont agree but its a valid opinion i can respect i just dont like when people say its bad😭
It was barely hated, man.
For all you metal heads out there, that song that plays at the beginning of the Thug Tug scene is played by Motorhead, and its a paorady of their own song, "You Better Run", called "You Better Swim".
Look, I love the first movie, but I will defend sponge out of water as long as I live. It’s not that bad. Ironically, the worst part of that movie was the stuff above water.
Fr though, the movie was good but it was advertised in the worst way by showing only the out of water scenes
Even then, the parts above water aren't that bad.
the worst part of the movie is the entire movie

And I have such good families with this movie a little bit. That is, you see when I was Hey, kid Spongebob has always been One of my favorite shows when I Was growing up? I remember I had two dvd's of the spongebob shows I had to share it with my cousin.
And as for the movie itself, I really do enjoy it. I remember me and my cousin would always watch It. I really watch It. I remember 1/2 that me and my real father watched it and we thought it was good and honestly, as a teenager. I still love it, and as an adult, till this day, I even still love it more. I really do enjoy this one. It's honestly a really good. What do you guys think?Do you guys enjoy this movie
i dont enjoy it at all. the plot makes no sense
An incredible album
Ween also did the "Loop De Loop" song as well
I saw the thumbnail and just had to comment, I don't know who you are or what you upload, but this movie was the best thing to come out of the 2000's.

The sandy movie was horrible, and the leaked plankton movie was actually surprisingly great.

I really wish I could just forget this movie and watch it again for the first time :(
the first movie isn't the canon ending to the series
that's a rumor that spawned from people misinterpreting what Stephen Hillenburg said in one interview, where he said the movie was supposed to be the grand finale to the show, not the end of the timeline
modern episodes and movies even reference the first movie's events with characters like Mindy and Dennis showing up, showing how the movie very clearly isn't the end of the SpongeBob timeline
I'm glad to have noticed this comment, going to now avoid the video entirely.
Even then, I'm pretty sure the movie was supposed to be the last of SpongeBob

Yeah Sponge on the Run isn’t a masterpiece necessarily (after all, any movie that introduces Kamp Koral - and with the wrong spelling at that 😂- wasn’t gonna have it easy), but it’s still enjoyable if you can get past the commercialized aspects. Although obviously the first movie reigns supreme
