When I was a kid the uglydolls you'd see in stores were like, actually made to look 'unappealing' compared to other toys. They had greyish/unsaturated colors, blank stares, and their fuzz already looked worn. They literally took an existing blueprint and made it cuter and more colorful so they could market it while still calling them "uglydolls"
There's something hilariously ironic about the fact that the "be original and be yourself" message is now pretty much the first sign of a movie or story being cookie-cutter, generic and not original at all.
@@AlmyTheAlien its like be yourself...but what if yourself is a horrible person..then you shouldnt be yourself. and If I'm supposed to be myself...then why do people get so annoyed at me when im "being myself"?? like this whole be yourself quote is stupid af
Well, the truth is, no one has to tell you to be yourself. You are _always_ yourself. When you are in denial and dishonest with yourself, you are still exactly the person you are meant to be in that moment: a person in need of introspection, but still authentic. Even that dishonesty is part of who you are. If you build your identity on lies and omissions, you will eventually become the facade you wear; you won’t know the difference between the mask and your real face. An authentic person need not be a good person, even if they'll end up saving the day.
@@chronologizer422 Please tell this to the person that was confused on how I flipped was extremely sensitive and shy to really outgoing and insensitive. They think I have bipolar .-. I don't think they ve ever met a shy tomboy before..
I kinda wish they’d done more with the idea of the kids seeing themselves in the “ugly” dolls. Like instead of missing a tooth, what if they’d both been missing an arm or a leg? You know, so kids with disabilities or imperfections watching this movie could actually relate to the characters? I guess the missing an eye thing is a start, but they could’ve really taken this idea further.
Yeah like, the child probably will have another teeth soon, i know adults and teenagers who dont have a teeth and have insecure with that but a child will have another in max 1 years
I mean, I kinda get that they wanted to give Lou his comeuppance, but forcefully throwing him into the washing machine in order to permanently disfigure him was too far.
Yes. What i also realized a long time ago is that also Kid Cartoons too. The deaths and backstory are so cruel. I just think its too much for a Kids Movie or Kids Cartoon Show.
@@Maxwell_Twist So? Doesn't justify actually disfiguring what to them is another person, they're low-key one hair away from doing what he did and that's not a good look.
Yeah, I grew up with Pitbull. I ignored the explicit parts to his music, like the time he made a song for Penguins of Madagascar. Would be better to just bring literal actors.
Ugly dolls just wanted to be like Lou and other perfect dolls, but they did'nt knew that being ugly is being different, not until Lou told them that ugly dolls does'nt belong in the perfect world (Ugly dolls think that being ugly and perfect are normal and equal, they got sad because Lou told them that being ugly is not ok)
Realistically, Lou would have been super valuable. People love rare, unreleased toys. How does the portal work? Are they only given to kids? A collector would love him and he wouldn't get dirty or anything. That seems the ideal situation for him. Unless they only want to be with kids and nobody else, which is a missed opportunity with all these living toy movies. They always focus on kids ignoring nostalgic adults and collectors. It would be an interesting change to focus on a collector who really treasures them or an adult who's had them since they were young and still cares for them. Toy Story could have had it, but decided not to.
Animated movies that care more about the casting than the actual substance *really* need to die. We don't care about Pitbull, we don't care about Kelly Clarkson, we don't care about Gabriel Iglesias. We don't care how star-studded the movie is. Just make the movie itself good.
And to put the cherry on top, all of this is lost as soon as you export the movie internationally where it has to be redubbed by the locals into their language. So... yeah. Didn't think that one all the way through huh movie studios?
Part of that is to help entice producers to bankroll the film in the first place. No one wants to invest money in a film that doesnt sound like itll sell.
The fact that the Uglydolls themselves aren't ugly at all really goes against the message. Like the original Troll dolls were ugly. Even the new ones have more interesting designs. These dolls are "ugly" in the most superficial way of course to appeal to a broader consumer base. I don't want to be the "Back in my day" guy but in the late 20th century when toys were branded as ugly they meant it. Madballs, Garbage Pail Kids, and Meanies were all proper ugly.
yoshimasterleader well this is a kids movie If these dolls are creepy and ugly would a kid wanna watch it No They would most likely be scared of them and not wanna watch it and see this good movie
C and E Idk I mean kids watched movies like, the box trolls when that was popular and those where weird looking. Plus a lot of kids like the weird looking designs of toys or movie characters.
@@moonlightwinter1072 Also they don't have to be creepy to be ugly, ugly and creepy are two different things. They could make them more complicated and make the ones that are based off of real or mythical creatures a little more realistic, give all of them less chibi proportions, add some imperfections like asymmetry or really yellow teeth, throw in some scragglyness, make some of them either strange grayish brownish or greenish shades etc, or give them complimentary color palettes since complimentary colors can look bad together. Also to facilitate ugly color palettes, instead of solid colors some of them should have markings that clash with their base color especially since a lot of them appear to be animals. Also for shapes of the abstract ones they should look at gourds. Some gourds are really ugly. If a couple of the dolls were literally multicolored gourds with faces and legs that could be ugly.
See, this is why I really respect the designs of Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". They went to great lengths to make Quasimodo genuinely ugly without making him hard to look at, managing to balance right at the "ugly cute" mark, like a pug.
I've always respected fiction like Hunchback of Notre Dame and Phantom of the Opera because they both hard commit to the concept. Quasimodo and the Phantom are, well .... not attractive. They're "ugly" as the definition would say. Both having facial deformity. And in the case of HoND, is also a hunchback. And yet, every adaptation of these books goes the lengths to show that ugliness is NOT the worst factor in play. In Disney HoND, the concept is about "who is the monster and who is the man?" Where Frollo seems outwardly normal but he's a genocidal racist. And Quasimodo is ugly but is genuinely nice and kind. The ugliness/monster is actually meant to be the racist villain and NOT the deformed hero. In Notre Dame de Paris, it again emphasized that Quasimodo is the genuinely good person despite the deformity. While Frollo loses his humanity due to his lust, and Phoebus is an immoral man whore who doesn't really care about women. In Phantom, Christine tells Erik that his "haunted face holds no horror for me now. It's in your soul that the true distortion lies." Again, showcasing the message that it's about one's actions that define one as a monster and NOT how one is deformed. The Phantom was deformed and was treated with cruelty for his whole life. But instead of becoming a kind person like Quasimodo, the Phantom internalized such rejection and became a bad person himself. He only becomes redeemed upon learning he was selfish and choosing to let Christine have her freedom back. His love for Christine redeems him when he realizes that he's been selfish and if he cares about her, he needs to let her go and be free. Both HoND and PotO portrayed the message well: physical deformity doesn't make one a monster. Only one's actions define who we are and not solely based upon appearances.
I actually thought that the hunchback guy was pretty ugly, soz. But he had his *moments* of cuteness. I think they embraced the ugly, but they went wrong when they didn't make the pretty lass fall for him, despite his ugly exterior. That's how the movie *should* have gone. Whatevs.
@@IllisiaAdamsActually, I think that's a part where the story shines, by showcasing how Quasimodo and Frollo both handled rejection. Quasimodo can't have Esmeralda, but he still chooses to protect her out of the goodness of his heart, whereas Frollo, upon being rejected, becomes cruel and vengeful towards her. The entire point is to show how selfless Quasimodo is compared to Frollo, and having him save her in order to be rewarded with a hot girlfriend would take away a lot from that message.
I mean they're weird but i'm not even sure if that word has a good ring for them, u don't see towns in kids stuff called Weirdburg or Weirdville, and Sillyville will get someone sued
Original Wage's name was explained. He (they changed his gender in the movie for seemingly no reason) liked to "work" in a store, of course the store didn't know he was there. Fun fact: he was the original UglyDoll. Basically a man wrote a love letter to his girlfriend in Korea and as an artist, he included a cute sketch. She made a stuffed animal of the design and sent it back to him. It's incredibly sweet.
We know all about that stuff. Our TH-cam channel is making ugly doll videos based on the original UG universe. We would appreciate it if you become apart of our journey and sub. And yes Wage is still a guy.
@Jonah Iwankow it's so wacky to see people actually remembering these things. I was the only one I knew who liked these and this was a large part of my childhood. Even got an illustration from one of the books recently I'm so weird
In some countries glasses are considered a disadvantage, for example in Japan. As proof, you can see how in anime characters with glasses are often called "four-eyes". In fact, I don't see anything wrong with wearing glasses, it's just an auxiliary thing to see better. If a person humiliates or insults you because of your glasses, then this person has complexes.
Ya know what I want? A kids movie with the message of “Be yourself” and “Out imperfections make us beautiful” that ACTUALLY conveys its message well and ACTUALLY has good characters. It’s almost like that’s what we should be getting in the first place…
If your looking for this type of movie I advise and urge you to watch its s7ch a beautiful day its honestly in my top 5 films of all time and 100 percent rotten tomatoes so you can watch that
I mean there are good movies out there with that message in mind that don’t rely on celebrity voices of chart topping pop songs. The most notable ones I can think of is Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Book of Life. Two expertly animated movies that I highly recommend.
Lou sounds like a better protagonist. Imagine being stuck in what is essentially a teacher or drill sergeant's roll, presumably for eternity, training generation after generation of fellow dolls and sending them off to on an adventure-with all the potential joy and risk involved- that you want to go on for yourself. Your job is essentially to make friends with these characters, prepare them for all the eventualities and damage they'll have to take and...just watch them go, sigh, and do it all again with the next batch, rarely if ever knowing how it will turn out for all of them. The movie could have been about him struggling with this maddening cycle, trying to change his fate, with the climax being his either choosing to take the plunge for himself, or sacrifice his own desires so that other dolls will be as well-prepared as possible for whatever their kids will have to throw at them. It could have made a name for itself too, going against the typical Disney-Pixar formula of character getting everything they want when they sacrifice their duty to chase their dreams by showing that sometimes, that's not the most responsible decision you can make.
or just go full on gehrman from bloodborn and have the characters trie to lose the final showdown to let lou be chosen by a kid only to realise that lou is also tryng to lose on pourpouse to let them be loved
I was part of the “fandom” for this movie back in 2018/19 and it was honestly the most fun I’d ever had being in an internet space(aside from some weird experiences). Regardless of the movie itself, the fans were super talented and I remember we also had a giant group chat dedicated to rewriting the movie to be more character-focused and have more depth to the story. Either way, the general consensus in fanart and stories was that Lou deserved better, and that the characters needed more serious moments. Still, I was a kid at the time(now teen) and I think the movie is perfectly fine for what it’s trying to be and who it’s target audience is. I saw it in theaters with my best friend and it was fun, simple and cute. I’m still trying to collect the plushies for the movie.
I actually felt bad for Lou to an extent. He’s not able to leave the world the same as the others, yet they treat them like a criminal. He does do some bad things, but if he’s unable to leave EVER, just like the other ugly dolls, and they are supposed to be kind and understanding- they shouldn’t of left him to get abused.
I don't know why they made him wanting perfection for the dolls was considered evil. I don't know about you, but when I buy a plushy or stuffed animal I look for the best one. The one with the fewest flaws because those last the longest. That's especially important for toys for children. Kids can be rough with their toys. You want ones with good stitching so they last.
yeah. because he was trapped in the world for so long and felt like he couldn't love anyone since they'd eventually leave him for the real world, he took the alternative to loving himself instead and grew a massive ego out of his insecurities. the one scene where he begs for forgiveness and he gets death threats from the other dolls is just upsetting :(
When I was in elementary school, we were assigned to make our own ugly doll, to learn sewing or something. I actually still have it, and looking at it now, I'm not sure what ugly parts were intentional and what were just bad sewing. It has lopsided ears, a big crooked nose, funky looking eyes, and a very crude mouth with no teeth, which was not intentioned to be ugly, I don't think. All in all, it looks more like a child's bad attempt at sewing than a purposefully ugly doll. I named her Augusta
Let's assume the imperfection was part of the goal of the assignment, you were supposed to learn to sew, embrace and learn from the mistakes, not to make a perfect doll, even if the assignment already was to make something ugly. Is brilliant!
Me and my uncle saw the trailer for this in theaters, he said “Oh I think I’d like this movie” (it was a landscape shot) then the characters showed up and he said “Never mind” God I love my uncle
Why are glasses considered ugly?! I love how I look with glasses, and wouldn't consider them ugly. Another thing, to make these dolls ugly, they should have shown their stitches, places where the fur has worn away, have tears where the stuffing is visible, etc. Like you don't have to make them to gross but like at least make them kinda ugly. Edit: Backstory for the antagonist. He was a prototype that met ox, and they became friends. Then he learns that he and his friend are going to be separated, one to uglyville while to other one to perfection whatever. Antagonist became hateful because he was always compared to people who were always going to be more perfect cause he's a prototype. Boom.
I think it might have a bit to do with how glasses was considerd ugly back in the 80s. Kinda intressting how it is now that glasses are used in designs.
Glasses are typically seen as a fashion statement these days. Wearing glasses can make you look "intelligent or rich". Seems a bit tone deaf to think that's an "ugly" trait.
Honestly this movie isn’t THAT horrible but the “I’m so short and stubby, look how much I weight!” lines and other like it really irks me. Like what? The character isn’t even fat and there audience is 7 year olds.
stereotypical girl bullies: the Leader: leader of the squad, the meanest. the Normal: just a normal bully, sometimes hates the stupid. the Stupid: an idiot, but still mean. Sometimes hates the Normal the Good: not mean, but somehow still in the group.
the meanest usually screams at how the other 2 are stupid and they agree then the normal one screams at how the stupid is so useless then proceeds to still be togheter
i feel like this is just ruined potential. its such a cute style and this could have been an adorable kids movie if they executed their messages properly. and, of course, if the dolls were actually ugly instead of just being odd shapes but yknow.. better story writing is a start
Well there's the Garbage Pail Kids and they're way uglier. So I suppose the "ugliness" in the ugly dolls is more abstract and about the abnormalities of their bodies, like missing an eye or having weirdly placed teeth.
this movie honestly had potential. if they just made the dolls a bit more ugly, and made Lou more manipulative or controlling, the story could show the message better. Maybe Mandy could’ve had something like a big scar, or a discolored spot on her face, which she would cover up with marker or something, and maybe Lou would kick out anyone who didn’t fit his perception of perfect, including humanoid dolls that have literally nothing wrong with them, but maybe he doesn’t like their hairstyle or something. Maybe the ugly dolls could fight against this, and create their own line of purposefully “imperfect” dolls. I don’t know, I just think they had a lot to work with, but didn’t do anything with it.
On top of the ugly dolls not actually being ugly by the standards of toys, no one acknowledges that the "Perfect Dolls" and the "Ugly Dolls" are different types of dolls! The ugly dolls are obviously stuffed-animal plush toys, while the perfect dolls are more like your little girl's dollhouse toys. And if I could choose between having a doll like one of the uglies or one of the perfects, I would pick the uglies. I like plushes, and as plushes, the uglies have adorable designs.
To answer your question about Lou being upset about being outside the red circle, it's because it was an indicator that he had "failed" the Gauntlet. If you listen closely at that part, he actually whispers "No" to himself, because it's his inevitable realization that he cannot go to the Big World, nor have a child's love. And he didn't just suddenly turn- he grew bitter over the years. It's implied that he's watched all of his friends betray him, continually leaving him for the Big World. And eventually, he snapped due to loneliness.
Kinda wanna get with a bunch of people, watch the movie, then try and remake it ourselves. I mean, it’d probably maybe only be a bunch of pages of writing on Google docs and some concept art, but I feel like it’d be fun. Lou could have some justice, the ugly dolls would actually be ugly, and there would be a plot.
Giving all the perfect dolls a different hairstyle and hair color was an odd design choice. If they are supposed to represent some narrow ideal of perfection, why give them a feature that varies so widely?
They basically all were like barbie dolls, same bodies and look but different hair styles, skin colour etc. It's to make them unique but still "perfect".
Actually- If you look into the background you'll see a ton of duplicates but with one small change like different skin color same hair or girl and guy with same hair. It shows the dolls are just that- dolls. Made to sell to many as same products. Thus why there are so many duplicates
I realize that this show is supposed to teach young kids that you aren’t ugly and perfect the way you are. But when I was a kid all I cared about was the next my little pony episode, no my appearance.
Now that it was pointed out... I am really curious about Lou, OX and Uglyville backstory. I have so many questions. Have Lou forgotten about all good time he went through with OX? What events changed Lou? Have OX said something at the wrong time? How was Uglyville even created? Did OX built Uglyville himself or was Lou or some other Uglydoll involved? If the second, is it destroyed? Have any doll in Perfection told Lou about his real purpose?
Them: Calls each other ugly and takes it as a compliment Lou: Calls them ugly Them: *Sobbing intensifies* Edit: How do I have so many comments I’ve forgot abt that have thousands of likes?-
So...basically Mandy is scared of showing anybody that she has glasses..... Where did she get those prescriptions? How was she diagnosed....? Why is there even a shop that sells glasses if they are considered ‘imperfect’?
If Lou is meant to be a prototype and meant to only guide the other dolls along. But his training it’s not needed. Then why did they make him a prototype at all?
This movie is bland, predictable, and Boring, and those are some of the WORST things a movie can be. I could tell the plot of this movie from the movie poster, not the trailer, the POSTER. 3 years from now, a minute number of people will remember this movie.
Enchanted Entity how can you expect anyone listen to you when you use the word “than” instead of “then”.Than is used to compare things and then is used to indicate what happens next.
Preview song lyrics: "...short and stubby, nubby teeth out on full display." Actual Movie song lyrics: "...short and stubby, and oH mY GOD, lOok HoW mUcH YoU wEiGh!" Why'd they change the lyrics? Not only are the new lyrics offensive, but the original hint to the end with her owner's teeth as well.
I know this comment is three years old XD but in context she’s saying how happy she is to be that size! It’s followed up by how she couldn’t look better. So I don’t think it’s meant to be offensive, in fact it’s putting a positive tone to a very common insecurity!
at 16:48 , that's when I realized how terrible this movie was. So [insert villain] was originally friends with one of the mc's friends but now turned on the mc and their entire kind? without any mentioning of a reason? what, was he indoctrinated into the idea of being the pinnacle of flawless doll?
It really does looks awesome, I haven’t played Persona but I love Joker in smash and I really want to buy that amiibo, but Banjo, he’s just hype, I wanna get that amiibo for sure, and Steve someday, you best believe I’ll be getting my Steve amiibo because Minecraft was part of my childhood
@Wylie Farquhar also I don't know what an actual prediction would be, but since we got a Goku, if we get a Vegeta I'd want Majjin, and for the final character maybe Raditz. Then you'd have two DBS characters, two DBZ characters and one who was in both.
It legit breaks my heart to see these Ugly Dolls’ characters and personalities get thrown away for some kids’ movie banter that no one gives a shit about. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with Ugly Dolls, and my parents gave me a booklet full of Ugly Dolls lore and each Ugly Doll’s personality: - Babo (the blue stout doll) loves to bake, and he especially loves to bake cookies because apparently he’s a low budget/chibi version of Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster. Basically, he’s a little cookie gremlin and I love him. - Wage (the tall bear-like doll with a blue loincloth) is a hard worker, and dreams of having the right job that suits him. He also has a little brother aptly titled ‘Minimum Wage.’ - Ox (the green rabbit-like doll) and Wedgehead (originally deep blue in color) were partners in crime, and their best trick was ‘turning your stuff into their stuff.’ - Tray (the pink doll with three cyan eyes) is very intelligent (the movie gave her glasses to emphasize this, which is kind of offensive coming from a person who wears glasses to see,) but she can get very confused at times. - Ice-Bat turns everything he touches into ice, but he’s super chill to hang around with, and all he wants to do is to warm your heart. - Moxy was originally a short light green rabbit-like doll (similar in appearance to Ox) who was full of energy and moxie (get it?) and had the energy to win a fucking _marathon._ Godspeed, Moxy. There are more, but I’m too tired to list them all.
You had a similar experience to mine. I really, really, really wish they used these ideas instead. They were so fun and interesting, not this bland, hollow, garbage can of a film.
Yeah, the dolls were so wholesome and cute. Sad to see them be sold out but I guess I hope the original creators got good money for selling the movie rights.
i had a few ugly dolls and my favorite was Wage on his little tag that describes his personality, it says that he works at a grocery store without actually being hired and none of the staff realize he works there and he doesn’t get paid, he just likes helping people :) and fun lil things like that would’ve made the ugly dolls suit a much different kind of story
also i dunno if this is a very remembered thing, but there were ugly doll comics and i loved them so dearly, they were like cute lil episodic slice of life stories and that sorta vibe would’ve worked so much better
Clichè’s front and back: Musical Star studded cast Be yourself message Optimistic main character who wants to be accepted Comic relief character(s) The mayor with a secret A town that has to be the “be like everyone else” town in order to get the characters to make the message A villain with the same motivations and characteristics as the town A side character who is different but has to hide it because of the villain’s rules. Three other comic relief characters The mayor has a complicated past with the villain The list goes on and on
Huh, "flawless built perfection, not for shelf" They actually foreshadowed. Honestly though, with the idea of Lou being a prototype I'm not surprised the man went bat sh*t. Imagine doing the same thing, over and over, doll after doll. Hell if he was forced to teach the 'perfection' lesson over and over it kinda makes sense him coming to believe it. He doesn't give two nuts about compasion cause it looks like he hasn't really been given any by the factory overlords I guess and his motivation actually made sense. Now I'm wondering if the creators really just thought of a cool villain concept and backstory and just wrote the movie around that
Ugly Dolls was an actual toy line. I think that's why the designs aren't very creative. The true 'ugliness' of the dolls was more of when pinned against a stuffed animal, they had this short, kinda rough fur, as opposed to fluffy and soft. The shapes were kinda odd, and unique, but they really weren't that ugly.
@@Ash-ci9mw Unfortunately, no. They've completely changed their design since the release of the movie, so even google doesn't give me the images I'm looking for.
2:51 Translation: “I am a wanted murderer and the police are currently looking for me but you will never know because you don’t know what the fuck I’m saying.”
People literally wear prescription-less glasses as a fashion choice... Like glasses haven't been unappealing in like. MINIMUM 15yrs wtf Also something like 60% of adults require corrective lenses... So it's actually a majority thing??? How is... What.
The original ugly dolls were actually pretty cool looking back on it. They almost had an emo/scene aesthetic to them which I really liked. Never had one but I did remember seeing them back in the bookstore when I was younger. Beanie boos were my priority back then though lol
It doesn’t even make sense that the dolls should be compassionate... they don’t even interact with the kids, they just sit there! It IS more important for them to look good because that’s all they do! But they don’t even look ugly ANYWAY I can’t-
I have a personal vendetta with ugly dolls. During animation school, we had this beginning 3D class. The end goal of this class was to get a model of the green ugly doll and make a short. I am absolutely horrible with 3D animation and hated it since taking that class. Anyways, anytime I see them, I’m reminded of the misery I spent in an animation lab.
One thing I absolutely hate about these kids films is that they're literally all the same. One character has this big idea, has insecurities about it, songs, super bad thing happens, happy ending. We need something NEW Not the same shit over and over and over but in different worlds. It makes the children dumber
@John mark Ogayon that movie was great but what about monster house but coralline was a amazing film but I heard the film flop at the box office and it cost 15 millions dollars and it only made 7 millions dollars on the box office
I found this film awful, mainly because of what they consider “ugly” for example Glasses:UGLY!!! Exactly like everyone else:PERFECT Injuries/scars:UGLY!!!!!
I remember this film. No, I didn't watch it. I saw the millions of ads. THIS HAD A HAPPY MEAL THEME ABOUT IT. This just shows they put more money in advertising than budget. And some scenes, like the gibberish cat, were just MADE to be out in a trailer for a joke to reign in the kids.
i hate how theres this stigma about "glasses makes people look ugly" or "if you wear glasses you are an ugly nerd" or whatever. I genuinely like how I look better with my glasses _on._
@Sasuhinagirl1 and that's why it irks me they are like 200 dollars sure you can get cool frames (which still is ridiculous considering cheap sunglasses and these 200 dollar ones use the EXACT SAME TYPE OF PLASTIC that breaks stupid easily), but still
As someone who was and still is obsessed with Ugly Dolls toys, since they were just odd little characters that lived in a silly world. The books and comics that were originally made already had a canon, with a special role for each critter. Why would they mess up the already whimsical and cute universe?
The funniest thing about this movie is that Lou has gained a surprisingly large fanbase. Seriously, there's a sea of anime-esque, pretty good fanart of him online.
Actually it sounded like only two of the girls had British accents But yea so many think that just because someone is British/has a British accent only has it to seem snobby Ts not like growing up in a place makes you pronounce things differently than in others
It's a shame they didn't touch up more on the villain, hearing that twist really sounds interesting. It does make him sympathetic. But because they just glossed over it by doing everything else with him wrong, it feels like nothing but an excuse.
This movie in a way reminds me of: "Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa" in a musical sense with having so many big celebrity names in that movie, voicing a lot of those characters, but not really doing anything big with the idea of having them sing/rapping any songs that are good nor catchy that can get stuck in your head type of songs.
Most are pens like most just look unfinished come on you don’t accidentally only put 1 eye perfectly in and also the bear thing looks like you forgot to put the fur and ears
The only parts I liked were Ugly Dog’s design, the villain (I wish we knew more about him), the animation, the way the movie looks, god the designs look great, everything looks great and I’m angry how good everything looks, (except how big the people’s heads are, it gives me deja vu to my horrible old art style) and gibberish cat, of course gibberish cat.
It's sad because the ugly dolls were actually really cool toys back then, and when I heard there was gonna be a movie about them in 2019, I was so happy that I watched the movie in theaters I left in shame.
The weirdest thing about this movie is that there was already ugly dolls media out there and this movie completely ignores it. There were these ugly guides to general things in life that had this fun surreal, cynical edge to them. If this movie kept the characters personalities the same as the books and kept the general tone of them, it could’ve been really good.
It is unknown how long it took between the time Ox left for Uglyville and the time when Moxy and her friends met Lou. Perhaps this hints at how much the Lou's pain and tragedy has changed his character.
@@Anna-tk7ui Ngl, if I were a screenwriter of Uglydolls, I would have done so. But, unfortunately, none of the existing creators at that time were interested in depth, but only in "money, toys, money, brand, money."
I've watched this movie before, and I think the "ugly dolls" are the villain's. 1, when Moxy came to the "perfect" world, she realized that its not a good place to be, and that uglyville is way better, but noooooo. 2 the only reason Lou did everything that happened in the movie as because of them, because if they just realized that it wasn't the place for them then he wouldn't get mad and stuff. 3, they just ignored Lou's backstory? think about it, Lou was perfect, all he wanted was to be an official doll, but he couldn't, and then these "ugly dolls" came, even when they were living happily, they went for their selfish needs. they barely even worked to be an official doll, imagine how frustrated and sad Lou would be when he knew that he couldn't achieve his only dream when he is perfect for it, but these dolls that aren't even supposed to be here could do it? Lou has seen many dolls do the only thing he can't, his heart must be broken. Because of that he became evil, and then these ugly dolls made it even worse by rubbing it in. Conclusion: Lou was just frustrated and sad because the ugly dolls did something they weren't supposed to do, and it was a selfish thing as well. And that thing was Lou's dream, which he saw many people achieve except him. That was the best I could explain it lol, basically Lou was just hurt and stuff. Thank you for coming to my ted talk
Ok so this is my first ever comment after years of TH-cam. That how passionate I feel about this. Lou could have been redeemed in one of the most amazing ways. You completely right about everything. All he ever wanted was to be own by someone and be a "real" doll. Because of this he tried so hard to be perfect!...and then these dolls come in and are perfect without even trying? Then not only that but they let him be physically abused by the dog and then turn him into a forever injured custodian. You know what would have been a better ending? Lou being able to leave and find someone...but as one of those special collectors dolls. Then he could be loved and admired like he always wanted, while still being clean and "perfect" forever because he would be in his special box. (Like the old guy from toy story 2) I guess they were going for something different by making a kids movie where they showed not everyone could be redeemed....but it was at the expense of an amazing lesson. Not everyone's version of perfect or good is the same thing and that's ok! For the ugly dolls it ment being themselves and for lou it ment being prim and proper and both are ok. Just imagine if instead the movie was about a girl wanting to be a girly girl vs a girl wanting to be a Tom boy...neither are wrong and neither are necessarily right. You can be who you are as long as its not at the expense of others.
@@aleyssavillagran8997 you’re right, I just think that for a kids movie maybe they should have a happier ending, even if Lou doesn’t get what he wanted. At least something good must happen to him, but I guess that will ruin the lesson of the story. I just wanted to rant about that lol, but what you said is definitely true
We went to see this movie with my family for my grandmas birthday. My aunts a writer and she just sat wondering how the hell the movie even existed. We saw a couple and their child walk out the theater and never return.
Someone briefly mentioned this, but it honestly bothers me that so many stories have the "imperfections are beautiful" storyline, and then NEVER include disabled people??? The closest we get is blind people, but they don't even comit to that, because it's usually just glasses and then that's it! Blindness over! Just get glasses! Honestly, I had this problem with toy story 4 too, where I thought Gabby Gabby's redemption was her finding another kid with a stutter or some other speaking disability, which to me, would have been so much more impactful! I'm disabled, and my favorite toy used to be this furreal dog my parents got me when I was little, and guess what? This toy never even worked, but I still loved her regardless. This might sound morbid, but why couldn't they have ripped a dolls arm, or legs off? Ripping the characters legs off would give a good way to insert more character design as you can think, what would their chair be made of, what would it look like? Maybe one of the dolls could have been inspired by people with down syndrome, even autism, but no? Because, to our world, imperfections are beautiful until they're ugly imperfections. (To my fellow disabled people, please know that you are beautiful, no matter what anyone says! You don't have to prove your worth, if all you can do some days is lie in bed, I completely understand that, and you're welcomed to do so! Don't feel like you have to work a 9-5, don't think you have to get all straight A's, don't think you have to give your all to a world that rarely gives any back. You're beautiful, you're important, and you matter! And remember, from the bottom of my heart, your imperfections are beautiful, they're apart of you after all! 💓)
@@valverios Looking back I don't think I worded this well, but what I meant was usually disabilities are fixed by really loose things. I've seen quite a few bits of media where the fact that a character can't see is a big part of their story, and then somewhere a long the way the character gets glasses and now has 20/20 vision. Glasses can definitely help blind people, but it doesn't get rid of it entirely. The best disabled rep, in my mind at least, is Avatar the Last Airbender. Toph is never magically healed, nor is her disability seen as a bad thing. Her disability is a part of her, a part of her that she's adapted to and made into a strength. I regrettably can't remember his name, but there's another character who's in a wheelchair, and instead of staying on the ground, or being magically healed, he and his father work together to find a way for him to fly with the other air benders. That's real disabled rep, adapting. A lot of disabled people will tell you that even if there was a magical cure-all, they probably wouldn't take it, because their disability as become just as apart of them as having brown eyes is, or having dark skin is. Often media, even media aimed to teach kids to love their imperfections, negate disabled kids. They don't give us kids with stutters, they don't give us kids who are wheelchair users, or kids that are totally blind, kids who are deaf, or chronically ill. I don't know if it's because the writers are afraid of criticism, just genuinely forget that disabled characters are an option, or think that a story centered on disabled characters must be a sad one, but what ends up happening is instead of saying "Imperfections are beautiful." It says, "Imperfections are beautiful to a point."
Lou had so much potential to have a great backstory and end up with a family of his own that teaches him how to be good but nope let's throw that out the drain because they totally havnt shown scenes of him having a chance with the good side
They could’ve made Louis a conflicted villain, that he cares but he knows they won’t make it and that’s why he cares about everyone being perfect so they can get past
Same. It’s so forgettable. People could literally make a video about how the film industry is pumping out more forgettable movies that are only made for the sake of money and not for storytelling. The kind of movies people use to distract their children because they don’t want to deal with them. It promotes no long term thinking.

@SuperFan, I mean, the animated Aladdin had the "Be yourself" message, and it's not considered a cookie cutter generic movie.

When you are in denial and dishonest with yourself, you are still exactly the person you are meant to be in that moment: a person in need of introspection, but still authentic. Even that dishonesty is part of who you are. I guess the missing an eye thing is a start, but they could’ve really taken this idea further.

Toy Story could have had it, but decided not to.
man, i need this fanfic now
Toy Story kind of did that tho. The collector was the antagonist, but still
Bro, he's a malfunction in the works.
The fact that Lou's character has potential to be an actual story is the most offensive part of the movie.

@@unicornbarfingrainbows7599 ... Not really? Evil Fake Blond isn't exactly a new trope, either.
Animated movies that care more about the casting than the actual substance *really* need to die. We don't care about Pitbull, we don't care about Kelly Clarkson, we don't care about Gabriel Iglesias. We don't care how star-studded the movie is. Just make the movie itself good.
The problem is that some people do, and they only see the movie because it has some famous actor that they like.
And to put the cherry on top, all of this is lost as soon as you export the movie internationally where it has to be redubbed by the locals into their language. So... yeah. Didn't think that one all the way through huh movie studios?
I dont really mind the celeb voice actors as long as the movies are good......
Part of that is to help entice producers to bankroll the film in the first place. No one wants to invest money in a film that doesnt sound like itll sell.
your name is good
The fact that the Uglydolls themselves aren't ugly at all really goes against the message.

Don’t forget Garbage Pail Kids
@@l.n.3372 it's actually an interesting paralell between the two stories. How did I not catch that earlier?
Quasimodo is not really ugly, he's still plesant to look at.
Honestly, the dolls aren’t even ugly, they’re just blande

Ya know what I want? A kids movie with the message of “Be yourself” and “Out imperfections make us beautiful” that ACTUALLY conveys its message well and ACTUALLY has good characters. It’s almost like that’s what we should be getting in the first place…

THIS, DOES.

It's not fine because it completely ignored everything that made the original Uglydolls from the 2000s so charming.
Lou was disrespected lol.

yeah. because he was trapped in the world for so long and felt like he couldn't love anyone since they'd eventually leave him for the real world, he took the alternative to loving himself instead and grew a massive ego out of his insecurities. the one scene where he begs for forgiveness and he gets death threats from the other dolls is just upsetting :(

Kinda intressting how it is now that glasses are used in designs.

this movie honestly had potential. if they just made the dolls a bit more ugly, and made Lou more manipulative or controlling, the story could show the message better.

Giving all the perfect dolls a different hairstyle and hair color was an odd design choice. If they are supposed to represent some narrow ideal of perfection, why give them a feature that varies so widely?
Idk
They basically all were like barbie dolls, same bodies and look but different hair styles, skin colour etc. It's to make them unique but still "perfect".
Actually- If you look into the background you'll see a ton of duplicates but with one small change like different skin color same hair or girl and guy with same hair. It shows the dolls are just that- dolls. Made to sell to many as same products. Thus why there are so many duplicates
They all have the same face though, it’s just some have eyelashes
I realize that this show is supposed to teach young kids that you aren’t ugly and perfect the way you are. But when I was a kid all I cared about was the next my little pony episode, no my appearance.

It legit breaks my heart to see these Ugly Dolls’ characters and personalities get thrown away for some kids’ movie banter that no one gives a shit about. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with Ugly Dolls, and my parents gave me a booklet full of Ugly Dolls lore and each Ugly Doll’s personality:
- Babo (the blue stout doll) loves to bake, and he especially loves to bake cookies because apparently he’s a low budget/chibi version of Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster. Basically, he’s a little cookie gremlin and I love him.
- Wage (the tall bear-like doll with a blue loincloth) is a hard worker, and dreams of having the right job that suits him. He also has a little brother aptly titled ‘Minimum Wage.’
- Ox (the green rabbit-like doll) and Wedgehead (originally deep blue in color) were partners in crime, and their best trick was ‘turning your stuff into their stuff.’
- Tray (the pink doll with three cyan eyes) is very intelligent (the movie gave her glasses to emphasize this, which is kind of offensive coming from a person who wears glasses to see,) but she can get very confused at times.

It is unknown how long it took between the time Ox left for Uglyville and the time when Moxy and her friends met Lou. Perhaps this hints at how much the Lou's pain and tragedy has changed his character.

I remember usually watching this with my neighbor mainly to make fun of it and screech "THERES A CHILD FOR EVERY DOLL AND A DOLL FOR EVERY CHÆLD"
Holy shet i would die if i heard that 💀🙏
I've watched this movie before, and I think the "ugly dolls" are the villain's.
Do have to agree. Lou deserved waaay better.
Yup and in the end, what did Lou get: Even worse suffering. Is this what we teach children how to treat problematic people?
(Like the old guy from toy story 2)
I guess they were going for something different by making a kids movie where they showed not everyone could be redeemed....but it was at the expense of an amazing lesson.
I dont think you understand how blindness works
