Just the way the camera circles around James as he tries to process what he saw and what he has done. It's almost like the player as well feels the same way, they need time to process what they have witnessed themselves. It's such a simple and powerful moment that I haven't seen any game top since then
There is something about those background 8 notes that go on forever - so hauntingly beautiful and sad on their own, and they never go away. The way I read the song, those 8 notes are his guilt and the other layers of the songs are trying to drown it out and bury it - unsuccessfully. It is ever present, and everything else builds on that foundation. And. You. Can't. Stop. Hearing. It. Just like when guilt becomes what drives you. It would be maddening if it wasn't such a soothing 8 notes.
Moonhermit2 well james lived with the guilt subconciously for so long it would have been a normal part of his daily life even if he did not know it so yes you're totally on the ball with your statement
my God why the hell did I came across this... I still remember that moment. I was 12, sitting with pad in hand and jaw dropped, realizing what he remembered he did. "the mary you know is not here"... "give her back I want her back! give her back to me" memories....
@@joshshrum2764 I think regardless of the ending, James forgives himself. That's what the Pyramid Head boss fight symbolizes. However, each ending represents how he finally deals with the loss. **SPOILERS** In "Leave", he takes Mary's words to heart and moves on, taking care of Laura as a surrogate daughter of theirs. In "In Water", he accepts and forgives himself, but ultimately decides life is not worth living without her and does what he originally went to Silent Hill for, drowning himself. In "Maria" he replaces his late wife with an idealized version of her. The "Rebirth" ending is interesting, because he refuses to give up and it's implied he decides to restart the order to revive her. That's my take, at least. I still hold SH4 in high regard for being my first, but SH2 and SH3 are absolute masterpieces. I prefer 3 for some personal reasons, but to me SH2 and 3 are two sides of the same coin. Akira Yamaoka dedicated himself SO much to each and every sound in SH2. Hundreds of different shoes on different floors he recorded for the footsteps. SH3 the visual department got a bit more insane and by the end of the game subtlety had been thrown to the wind. You feel like you're lost in between realities.
This song while expressing the saddest truth in James's life, is not a really sad song, I think it represents a sort of dark/sad relief in James's mind. The kind of relief you have when someone close, agonising for a long time has finally passed away and is not in pain anymore. You're really sad, but in the same time happy that the "problem" is solved, the pain is partially gone with the person. While depply sad, James is relieved in some way that he knows he touches the end of his nightmare, and there are no doubts left for him on what he has done and why he's here, not lost in the mist wandering.
So I'd heard this song at least ten times before, both in the game and the movie. But only just now, when I clicked this video and the music started, I got chill bumps all over my entire body and the hair on my arms rose up. Ah, good old Silent Hill, so terrifying and yet it feels like you're only coming home to where you belong.
The first SH game I was able to get my hands on was SH4: The Room. Understandably the weakest of Team Silents SH games, but without ANY experience with M games or system shock types the game creeped me out to my core. My best friend had all the games and by now SH 1, 2 and 3 were not being made anymore and it would be years since their HD releases. I raved to him about my experiences with SH4 and he didn't talk down about the game or anything, he just grinned and handed me 2.

I like to make music as a hobby. I think making music really lets you release emotions that you have inside of you. I make 8-bit music, but plan to begin making music using actual instruments once I learn how to use them. ...Still, I'll never compare to the musical genius of Akira Yamaoka. His music just brings something out of you that nothing else seems to be able to do. It's just... so good. I'd die happy if I could make a piece of music that evokes emotion out of somebody. But my self-confidence always holds me back, and I never allow myself to truly release what I'm feeling. I tell myself that nobody will care, that people will think I'm an asshole for trying to make music, for thinking that I'm actually worth something, and that I'm a disgrace and an insult to anyone who actually makes music. I'm just a 17 year old boy who sits in his room, doing nothing with his life. What's going to come out of this? It's such an internal struggle to make music and not just throw it away, saying that nobody's going to like it. That's why I get so envious when I listen to Akira Yamaoka's music; he's able to put an emotion into a song, and truly make the listener feel what he was feeling when he made the song. I shut myself down before I'm able to do anything like that, which is why I have so much trouble making music. It's sad, but hopefully I can overcome it one day and make a piece of music that people will really, truly like and relate to. That's my ultimate goal; I want to make people feel the way I do when I make a piece of music, just like Akira Yamaoka does with his songs. But, alas, that's a far ways away. :-)
When this song played all of James's illusions dissolved and reality began to set in...his love was dead and nothing could bring her back. Really tragic shit.

You would be correct. That is the very same image. Ripped right from the game, too. Although when you see it in the game, the engine makes it seem more disproportionate than the actual image itself is. It gives off an illusion that you are on the opposite end of a larger lake than what is in the picture. Plus the fog in-game covers the image up, along with the trees; making the colors appear duller and less contrasting. I like the image.
