I can also really see where they really improved with the facial animations this time around, Sonic & co no longer look stiff and their animations have a lot more personality!
Yea i just hope we get expressions as, well expressive as rise of lyric because the animation was the best part of rise of lyric
i noticed this and i love it
well, half of the animations at least, the ones from the side-story are ultra stiff and low quality.
Yet the models still don’t really emote well.

Frontiers not only improves/fixes the last 10 years of games both in gameplay and story/character, it surprisingly returns things back to the roots in terms of the characters, something that was sorely needed since Colours
Fixed the gameplay? Idk in a lot of ways its a downgrade from past entries. Writing is good tho.
IKR the writing is top notch, not only have they returned all the charctors too their best versions they some how did the impossible and fixed the wrongs commited by the meta era.

@@Clara_Page sonic unleashed, sonic generations, hell even sonic colors in some ways. The 2d is worse then the actual 2d boost games, and the adventure stages in cyber space make me wish sonic just controlled like adventure again.
I do think the open zones are fun tho. If a little repetitive at times.

Amy being obsessed with Sonic didn't really became a thing until Heroes, because even in the Adventure games she still had a sense of other priorities, and wasn't afraid to stand up to Sonic either, like with Gamma.
And even then, aside from the infamous team battle in Heroes she was still more than willing to help Cream and Big find their lost friend and her mission in Shadow's game was about finding Cream and Cheese with Sonic being completely out of the equation.
I don't think so, even in Heroes, her main goal was to help her friends find Froggy and Chocola. Not just find Sonic. She's seen as a great leader in that game.
I have bearly reached the 2nd island on this game and I already love it!!
I wasn't expecting much (the newer games lowered my expectations and now I realized it lol) so I was really surprised to be met with such a fun gameplay and sweet story!!

I wonder how they're gonna improve upon the idea for the next open-zone game. My two main thoughts are that they either make the areas you explore be more sonic-esque, with loops, ramps, slopes, etc being built into the world instead of having all the platforms be floating or grind rails. The other idea is that we get to play as Tails or Knuckles as well, giving us more verticality in what we can explore, and letting us come back to areas to think of how to get through them in a new way
The writing (mainly dialogue) is thanks to Ian Flynn. He's a writer for the IDW sonic comics, and pretty much how everyone talks to eachother here is very much like how they are on the comics too. He does such a fantastic job at it.
Sonic is WAY more caring in general as you've described, he acts more like that inspirational icon that he used to be years ago. (Which imo a hero like Sonic should be) his convos are really cute!
Amy too whilst definitely less jarring here. In the comics she does admittedly get flustered whenever Sonic does his usual cool shtick around her, but she reacts in a way where it feels like she matured out of that sort of phase. She's still fan girly and most certainly likes to tease Sonic, but has learnt to give the poor blue guy some space. I love how she's written.
Seeing Sonic's combat in Frontiers gave an idea for Shadow
I absolutely LOVED this game!
You want more Music? There's ~150 songs in the game. A Soundtrack almost 7 hours long. It's the largest soundtrack we have to date by a very large margin. SA2, Generations, Forces, they all pale in comparison.

One thing I learned was if you make an infinity sign with cyloop you get unlimited boost, collecting the max amount of rings gives you a significant speed boost, and making a circle with cyloop spawns an infinite supply of rings

What I love about this game's interpretation of Amy is it feels like a genuine continuation of her arc in SA1. You point out that she's been "simping for Sonic" since day 1, but Adventure and somewhat 2 show that she's compassionate (through the bird, Gamma, and Maria), and with SA1 already setting her up to be more independent from Sonic, Frontiers focused on that compassion and love. (Spoilers below)
This return to form isn't even only true for Sonic/Amy/Knuckles either, as Tails in the 3rd island is shown to be smart and friendly but also not really fully confident in himself yet (showing that Adventure 2, while not a fluke, was likely just Tails at his best... on those days); and they even play on that through referencing "mischaracterized" events such as Lost World and Forces, with Tails HIMSELF concluding that he's not consistent, implying his confidence varies with time (which imo makes him even more relatable; you can be full of yourself one day but completely lost on something the next).
This is peak writing (as expected from Ian Flynn): everything did happen, and the characters know it did, yet everything is explained relatively well, in a way that makes it all feel coherent (when it used to be very clearly inconsistent). It actually reminded me of a YTer's theory that Forces Tails has been hit with depression after Sonic's assumed death, only here it's not contextualized as straightup depression but merely a progressively worse downgrade in confidence over time (and I mean, why wouldn't it be that? His best friend and longtime idol figure just got destroyed that time, and while he could have done something for sure, the fade to black means we don't know what happened next anyways. In the 3 months that Forces stupidly left ambiguous, with just a few lines in Frontiers we can relativise this to something that makes some level of sense; Sonic is the hope and motivational speaker of his team after all)

Pinball Physics / Roll Physics . Ball and HALF PIPE tricks (when you press down/Crouch and add more momentum like in Sonic Mania Sonic CD and Sonic 1 💖 )
Get rid of instant slide. Roll is WAY BETTER than Slide. Find another solution for slide (like pressing attack after a roll or just attack when you're full speed )

Nah, Sonic has had a string of good games before so it can happen again. I'm cautiously optimistic that the next Sonic game will be as good as Sonic Frontiers (if not better).
u can fast travel by collecting some kind of maps for the elder and hermit kocos that let you do /tp to them so if theres an elder/hermit koco anywhere in the island u playing u can teleport to him with that item, i think u can only get it in the fishing minigame
I'm glad that Knuckles isn't just dumb and Amy isn't just a Sonic simp, and the animation looks amazing!

I got Sonic Frontiers on November 9 and I've been playing it for quite a while since that time. I think it's a good game, although if I'm being honest, I'm not a huge fan of the open world concept. I miss the traditional 'Run from Point A to Point B' style of Sonic games, that's why I just want to be in the Cyberspace levels as much as possible. I'm nowhere near finishing the game yet. In fact, the last 3D Sonic game I finished was Sonic Heroes. I've played Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations and I love both of those games, but I never got around to finishing them for whatever reasons. But I finished Sonic Mania when I got the game 5 years ago. Oh, and I've never played Sonic Forces and, based on what I've heard about the game, I have no intention to do so. Also, I love how my homie Big is back in this game, I unironically love Big. Also, if Sonic Adventure 3 ever comes out, I hope it's not open world. Just let me get from the start of the zone to the goal ring at the end of the zone. Even so, I think this year has been a good year for me to be a Sonic fan because Sonic Movie 2 was a genuinely good movie and Sonic Frontiers is a genuinely good game despite the minor criticism I have for it. This year has also been good for my boy Knuckles who is FINALLY a based and intelligent badass again in Sonic Movie 2 and Sonic Frontiers (like he originally was in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which is my most favourite Sonic game of all time). It seems like the future is bright for Sonic (for now, at least). I love being a Sonic Chad, bros.
Another positive for me would be Sonic and tails' big bro, lil bro relationship was expanded, It was just so wholesome just mm *chef's kiss (also I hope this doesn't count as a spoiler)
So about the fast travel, funnily enough, the areas where you complete puzzles to gain more map data, will spawn grind rails that *are* basically a type of fast travel between the puzzle areas you complete.
It’s not true fast travel but they definitely get you around really quick, it helps encourage gaining map data too.
Oh yeah also the rails for one point to another don’t spawn unless you complete both sides’ puzzle. Basically like making a bridge
Imma be honest I only made that realization after noticing where each of the spawned rails led to. Which took me like 2 whole maps to figure out. The game should honestly be a bit more obvious about that detail lol

It feels like there aren't many songs on the open world maps... but the soundtrack actually has 4 hours of ambient tracks for these!
Small note. As great as new abilities would be, I feel like that would take a little too long to implement via update if possible, I was thinking more of an upgrade system.
You start off with a level 1 attack score but if you could upgrade your stats individually for attack instead of all at once, tha would really give the player a more strategic approach to the game!

I think the game just needs to either give enemies more health or punish players more for mashing or doing 1 combo exploit ie: base combo to stomp, repeat

Frontiers might not be perfect but it pretty damn good, it really has restored my faith in the Sonic franchise. I have my fingers crossed for Mania 2, a new 2D boost game and of course a new 3D entry with Adventure style levels would be amazing.
Frontiers feels a little experimental too me, like it's designed to test the waters with us gamers so I wouldn't be suprised to find that the future DLC experiments even further and may hint at the direction the next big Sonic game is going to take
So uhh, i didn't play Sonic Frontiers but a friend of mine told me about the "Parry" you actually do timing for the Parry in the Normal & Hard Difficulty, but in Easy, u can hold it aslong as u want

The pop in is an issue, but it didn't annoy me too much. At the very least, it didn't take me out of the experience.
Great video! However I have to say I don't know if I agree with the point on the music. I encountered multiple tracks per island, and many different music styles throughout the game. Additionally, if we are taking into account duration of the OST, it is longer than both the OSTs of Sonic Unleashed and Sonic 06 combined. To be honest, music was the only category I felt comfortable giving a perfect 10/10. Gameplay was a 9 for me because of cyberspace controls and physics and whatnot.
This game’s been a blast so far! I hope they improve the open zone formula in a future game and allow other characters to be playable again, so we can explore the world in different ways. And maybe include a Chao garden? 😭
The Chao Gardens only appear in the Adventure games, if I remember correctly. So your best bet for a new Chao Garden would be Sonic Adventure 3 (if it ever comes out and hopefully it will).
sonic CD is an open world with side quests (eggman generators) and collectibles (time stones)
I just wished they tickled with the art style and models a little more; I feel they went too safe, like I'm looking at a stock image (speaking about the character models, the environment is beautiful). Doesn't need to be radical as Boom's design but it would've also helped with the new identity and slightly mature tone the game is trying to portray.
A more abstract/sharp take on the characters would be really nice if dome properly

I was simply blown away from Frontiers. The super Sonic Fights, the Open zones, Sonic controls (very accurate). I Love it
I didnt wanted to buy it until a price drop. Recently my wife bought me a physical copy for like 30 dollars and im so glad they added the jukebox. I feel sorry for the people that played frontiers without choosing from a amazing soundtrack while running to your next mission. Im glad i waited. I have only finished the first island but for now its the best 3d sonic

Bro I'm halfway through this video right now, but I FELT the part when you said when you think of Sonic combat you think of that clip from Sonic Heroes. I do wish spamming the original homing attack was still an option but I understand this new move towards a more flashy and modern combat system. Above all I'm surprised no one has really commented on this new childish adaptation they've put on sonic. While the game gives a lot of melancholy vibes and tries to be mature, the enemy types, the dialogue and "Giganto" are all like way more childish than the old Sonic Adventure two themes. Hell Shadow the Hedehog said damn lmfaoo. I miss the slightly more mature "teen" sonic.
Yeah, definitely disagree on the more mature thing. I totally understand the point because yes the darker, gloomy and more serious tone makes it *seem* more mature, but the character herself (I can't even remember her name and I'm at the desert zone) is super childish and the fact that you talk to her almost as friends throughout the game is incredibly odd- I'm not sure why we all seem to be ignoring that part. Also again - the enemy types are super generic, you see the same cutscene of the generic grunts spawning from the ground and jumping like 50 times throughout the game and the first boss Giganto that literally has no backstory or relevance to Sonic is just kinda whack to me. If these were like some kind of ancient themed guardians that were controlled by cyberspace that would be sooo much cooler than just using "cyberspace" as a generic label for creating the most bland enemies lol.

You actually can unlock fast travel once you’ve unlocked all the map in an area. But I still wish you had it from the beginning

Someday I hope to get this game myself. The only platforms I could possibly get it for are the switch or the PC but my laptop I got in 2016 And it's showing its age. The thing is my laptop has a 1 terabyte hard drive so I can put a lot stuff on there. The Nintendo switch only has a 32 GB hard drive which kind of sucks, but it probably would be a lot more convenient to get the switch version so I can play it portably when I'm out since for most of the day I'm out anyway
I've noticed Frontiers seems to have a bit more attention paid to Sonic lore that I haven't really seen since Adventure 2. I think the success of the two Sonic movies has really inspired Sonic Team to get creative with their storytelling again- or at least made it a higher priority this time around.
You forgot to mention Movie Sonic, not the 2019 Design, the 2020 Design. I haven’t played the game yet, but I’m glad it’s not terrible and I know it’s a new take and it’s better than Forces.

So… sonic frontiers… if I’m not wrong… took 10 years… to be the next good sonic game. My mind is blown.
Sonic's pitch- You didn't need to cherrypick an older game where his pitch was intentionally high to make the case his voice is deeper here. While the fanbase has been contradicting itself on the idea that Sonic has a deep voice and (consistently) deeper voice (his voice is infact deep in Forces and TSR), it does seem slightly deeper often in Frontiers. So you could have still used a clip from SF and TSR, heck even a higher pitch line from those games.

I have minor problems with the game like jank controls and camera, weak story, and other stuff. But overall, I'm actually having a lot more fun with it than I was expecting.
I think the main thing to take away from this game after seeing so many reviews, is that this game is really fun. Mixed opinions with story, cyberspace, and other stuff like bugs, but overall it's so dang fun to play

Sonic Forces and Mania,so it is a 6 year difference. Plus Origins came out this year so it has been actually only months since a great Sonic game started to exist.

A lot of what i see in this review looks like developers listening to feedback and learning from the experience of developing... Less than favorable games. After even more trial and error from the last decade they seemingly made something good out of it.

The game is too short and when you beat the game it puts you before the boss fight is stupid
The only character that I DON'T LIKE in this game's story is Amy and Tails, especially Amy. While I don't want her just simping, she's a sweet, high energy girl, that's who she is yet in this game she seems so meh and over dramatic, I actually didn't like her talking down on Sonic for initially think it's a waste of time, her reaction to his thoughts on that along with the way she speaks sometimes feels a bit forced, very forced!

this game is far from great and that’s due to one reason and that would be the technical side of things. It’s decent and a step in the right direction but the game should have been postponed. The graphical pop-in in the game is ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS!!!!!!!!!! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game with this much texture popping in and out in my life and I’ve been a gamer since a little boy. It really detracts from the experience. I’m glad I didn’t buy this game day one but I still know because of a bunch of reviews and gameplay I’ve seen on the internet and one of my friends has the game to and he’s says it’s very unoptimized.

Idk, it's a mid to me so far. I think they should have baked it longer. The ridiculous pop-ins, the samey zones with questionable platforms just floating in the air, "puzzles", and not so great story is not doing it for me.
