Good Day, everyone. Doing something a little different with this Vs. Video. Would you guys like to see movie reviews done like this from now on? Obviously I can't use much footage because of copyright reasons, but this was a bit refreshing to do! Hope you guys enjoy. Good night!
@@Supermari-kun2170 But I like a cookie. XD I love Over the Hedge. Its underrated and my favorite characters were Verne the Turtle and Hammy the Squirrel.
He only voiced him in Sonic Underground, though. In Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, he was voiced by Long John Baldry. In SatAM, he was voiced by Jim Cummings. In the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA, he was voiced by Edwin Neal.
I find it funny that out of all the actors from the Sonic franchise to make a cameo in the first feature length film is the one who was Eggman in the great Sonic Underground.
About Sonic’s portrayal, they seem to be building up to him being more like his game counterpart overtime. It’s a neat decision since Sonic’s rarely ever seen as anything but a near flawless, confident competent hero.
Yeah, I have thought about how you would try to work out something like that, considering there wasn't exactly a whole lot of character-writing in the classic games. Nothing about Sonic's upbringing or what his initial encounter with Robotnik was like. You look at someone like Batman, and you'll get a plethora of examples of his origin and first meeting The Joker and whatnot, but Sonic... doesn't really have that. And in the long run, it's made things feel a little disjointed. What kicked off Sonic to be at this point? What drives Robotnik do to what he does? It's a little hard to make out because we haven't really have a point of reference to go off of.
@@Lugbzurg That's kind of like saying we need backstory on Mario and Bowser and how they got to the point they are at now. Granted we do got a couple games with a baby Mario and Bowser, but it's not like it really explains who they are. They are just a classic hero and villain trope, doesn't really matter what their motivations are.
@@britipinojeff Sonic is generally more lore-heavy than Mario. Sonic and Robotnik are much more complex characters than Mario and Bowser. Plus, this kind of information is pretty easy to infer. Not so much with Sonic and Dr. Robotnik.
@@Lugbzurg If you're looking into the Archie comics maybe, but it doesn't really come across that way if you've only played the games. Do Sonic and Eggman seem like deep and complex characters if you look at the stories of Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Colors, etc?
I am putting this here just because someone will say something about it: The VFX studio that worked on the film DID NOT GO UNDER BECAUSE OF THE SONIC MOVIE! There were already many factors at play that forced the studio to shut down, such as: high rent in Vancouver, other clients (production houses) not paying on time, and some distribution/management issues with the parent company in the UK. The reason for the insane amount of overtime was because they had these commitments already contracted for and more work usually equals more money for the shop. Sonic and Paramount was not the straw that broke the camel's back! And as far as I know the main VFX studio's HQ in the UK is mostly fine.
Yes I hope this comment gets pinned or at least close to the top so people can see it. I really don't want to see everyone blame the redesign for the studio's shut down.
The situation still sucks tho even if the cause is different and also knowing that the people who actually hauled ass to improve Sonic's design and animations are not reaping the reward for their efforts sucks even more
@@islandboy9381 I agree, it is a sad occasion. But my point was to try and stop people from this was the final straw... It wasn't. It just happened to come along at a bad time. There's an article somewhere that goes into more depth properly about the whole thing. And essentially it just boiled down to the fact the studio picked a bad location to set up shop and a bad habit of contracting a ton of work onto their teams.
@@junyoungkang2766 I thought it was more than that... Like I was pretty they were juggling somewhere around six or seven projects at once. Unless that was during the Marvel season.
For me, I think the Sonic movie was an excellent proof-of-concept. All the movie needed to do was prove that Sega could cooperate to make a good movie based on one of their IPs. Not bad. Not necessarily great. But good. And it does that with flying (Sonic) colors. I'd rather this first movie be a little "safe", a little more basic than crazy. I know Sonic's logo is "Gotta go fast", but the franchise needed to take a first step with solid footing before trying to go all-out sprinting ahead. More bombastic ideas and settings can come with time later, but the franchise needs to show that it has support first before Sega pulls the plug.
i love this comment and its what i hope is done with the illuminations mario movie.finding footing with setting the world and characters up(have mario, peach, luigi, bowser, toadette, the koopalings and maybe daisy be the characters used and keeping their designs one to one like their 3d designs) having a fun plot(even if its bowser kidnaps peach have some great dialogue like peach befriending the koopalings or she escapes like in 3d land or mario adventures.maybe even just have bowser attack the mushroom kingdom and kidnap everyone with mario saving them and helping him as partners on his journey like super mario run) good writing(at least along the lines of the sports games or mario and luigi which is the main games with more story and personality charm.) and just overall great interaction between mario, luigi, peach and bowser like sonics good relationship with donut lord and his wife resulting in them becoming a family at the end of the sonic movie.i hear rumors of it possibly taking inspiration from the super mario adventures comic and whether or not its true i think at the very least its a great way to make a mario movie that plays it safe while being fun with its characters and freedom their charm has.(especially with nintendo keeping an eye on the development like how sega kept their eyes on the writers of the sonic boom cartoon and the movie.:3)
[0ctopusComp1etely] This right here is what so many people that are against this film are not understanding. The filmmakers want to make all of the ingredients come together in a smooth and methodical way. They’re trying to make eye candy AND GOOD FILMS. Not just eye candy and only eye candy. Damn.
Makes sense. Robotnik's main flaw in his plan was that while his machines are able to keep up with Sonic once the quill's power is activated, everything seems to be mostly automated on his end at that speed and he can't quite keep up himself. When Sonic does that last hit to shove him into Mushroom Hill, Sonic's moving at a coherent speed but Robotnik's slowed down just like everything else. A fully autonomous robot able to utilize Sonic's speed and make spur-of-the-moment combat decisions without waiting for Robotnik's input seems like the natural fix for that flaw. The question that I have is, who's going to be the one to accidentally spring him out of Mushroom Hill? He seems confident that he can escape by himself, but what I think is more likely is one of two scenarios. Either Tails checked Mushroom Hill first before reaching Earth, and was naive enough to let Robotnik steal a Ring. (I'd imagine the time difference between the two arriving would be Robotnik not realizing quite how to activate the Ring and refusing to believe it's as easy as it is, so he creates an elaborate machine to construct the portal, or just being narcissistic enough to refuse to rely on the Ring's power by itself, and building the machine so that he can say that HE escaped rather than he just used the Ring) The alternative would be the Echidna Tribe searching Mushroom Hill first and he tricks Knuckles into bringing him back. The first seems more likely, given Tails was revealed first and Robotnik's characterization in this version, but the second would follow the original continuity a bit closer. (Not that existing continuity is being followed all that closely to begin with.)
SPOILERS: Two things I'd never expect to see out of the character of Sonic the Hedgehog, a character I've known for 23 out of my 25 years of life. - Sonic actually trying to glass someone wih a beer bottle. - Sonic actually wanting to start a bar fight.
Well he's basically an excited kid in the movie and what do kids do when they watch movies/cartoons? They try to imitate them, so Sonic acting that way makes sense. I'm surprised they got away with having a bar at all in the movie, along with Robotnick mentioning he crippled a bully out of revenge.
He jokes about not sponsoring Olive Garden, but one time when I met him at PAX East a few years ago and he told a friend of mine to take me out to Olive Garden as thanks for getting him a gift.
I love this movie quite a lot. Sonic's characterization in the movie especially is one of my most favorite portrayals of Sonic. The emotional complex about him where he's happy-go-lucky, arrogant and playful, but harbors feelings of loneliness and sadness is so relatable and ended up making me sympathize with him throughout the whole film.
Wait, that's right...! I wonder if Sega has lifted some restrictions from their studio mandates since they got made public? I distinctly recall one of them was that Sonic isn't allowed to cry, and another was that no one is allowed to have parental figures, unless they already exist in the mythology (Vanilla the Rabbit was cited as a prime example in the document). But dang, we got so close! I was just waiting to hear "Planet Mobius" somewhere! (That's another thing their mandates took off the table. No idea why.)
@@Lugbzurg Because canonically speaking, there is no "Mobius". Sonic canon has always only had Earth. Mobius was just Sega of America trying to be edgy in the 90s, which Sega of Japan heavily disapproved of.
Sonic was the BEST part of the film next to Dr. Robotnik (aka Eggman which HE IS CALLED THAT IN THE FILM). The worst character was the Sister character that was talking like the "SHUT UP GRANDMA" guy from Transformers as well as being obnoxious. However, she got tied up so it's all good. XD
@@davecross4493 ... How about you let others feel the way the honestly feel towards a movie and not impose your opinions onto them, you asshole, hmm? OP: I feel this way towards the movie You: No you don't Fuck off.
10:34 What? No, it hasn't been 10 years, Roger has been voicing Sonic since Colors, and that came out in 20... . . . . 2010. Ten years ago... . . . Why am I having a existencial crisis all of a sudden?
Fun Fact: Paramount and DreamWorks actually beat Fox to the classic Quicksilver slow-mo scene in an animated family film from 2006 called "Over The Hedge".
Correct. And Over the Hedge was also based on a n interesting comic. Now where is the sequel? Oh right the Over the Hedge videogame WAS the sequel. Sorry.
I mean, the story beats were pretty generic. I don't really know how you can argue it was anything other than completely predictable all the way through.
Mustn't have seen very many 90's nostalgic crash-grabs movies, the plot is very generic. That being said I think this movie did those cliques better than all it's counterparts.
@@Mailed-Knight Oh believe me I admit that some storybeats were generic, but I actually liked Tom and Maddie, and the story did feel like a Sonic story, the only issue is I wished they had put in at least some reference to make it a feel like a Sonic movie, but there wasn't many if at all
@@j0llyaqua846 During Robotnik's power outage you see a switch that says 'Badniks' implying that Robotnik already has a robotizer (or he is working on one). There is also the Echidna Tribe at the start.
2:01 More accurately, it was the Vancouver branch that shut down, leading to some of the employees being moved over + the redesign cost $5 million to make (instead of $35 million) with no crunch and also the aforementioned Vancouver branch of MPC (who also did CG on the Lion King remake) was shut down due to tax credits.
Yeah. From what I've heard, it's more along the line that the Vancouver studio was closed and most of the workforce was moved elsewhere. I'm pretty sure the "mass-firing" was a tall tale made by news pages for clicks and outrage.
Can either of you provide sources regarding this information? Googling this doesn't exactly yield the most accurate of information so I'm wondering what reputable sites and sources you guys have. There's a lot of misinformation or blatant lies about this whole situation and it would be nice to have this cleared up.
Hands down, one of the rarest "Emeralds" In the rough up there with Detective Pikachu and hopefully on the right track for SOME Video Game Movie Adaptions done better.
I heard Sonic Movie did more than that... No. 1 movie in the world, broke box office records, fastest selling, biggrst opening, best video game movie ever made, saved Paramount, saved video game movies, saved the fans, saved Hollywood slump and saved it from the woke feminists identity politics destroying the film industry.
About this Sonic’s loneliness issues, we got to consider that modern game sonic is a bit older and matured than the version in the movie, movie sonic right now is basically sonic 1 sonic in terms of timeline. He’s probably going to grow up a little if there are sequels. He has to get over that trauma he experienced as a kid, among other things.
I think it's more so that the studio was allowed to actually show Sonic having more emotion beside being confident like Sega has been doing for the past 20 years. And that's probably why people feel weirded out by it they're so used to seeing Sonic be full of himself and cocky and never like once faltering that actually seing him have a different emotion in this movie is weird
I'm convinced somebody at Sonic Retro is already working on a mod of the Genesis games to port in Movie Robotnik. We got enough sprites from the credits sequence to do it, as well as an example using the Green Hill wrecking ball.
Gotta say my crowds were loving the movie-I saw it Thur and Fri and it was mixed ages and everyone loved it. I think what makes it work is the simple story, character chemistry between Marsden, Sonic and Eggman and the fact that Sonic DOES have a history of being on Earth-Sonic Unleashed, Shadow the Hedgehog game, Sonic X, Sonic Adventure series etc. For some reason Sonic being on Earth works just as well as when he's home. And my god don't think I've seen crowds go this insane over an end credit scene since Avengers 2012. If people lost it over TAILS then imagine if they teased SHADOW in the sequel. People would lose their ever loving MINDS.
Ribotto Studios XD, and I would be one of them for Shadow is my third favorite character of the franchise while second is Chris and then first is Sonic! EEP!😊😍
I really enjoyed this movie! My younger brother had also enjoyed Jim Carrey's take on Dr. Eggman, too. He liked how Savage Jim made his character. And that second stinger...the only thing I can say is: Max *N U T.*
I am gonna say that the Sonic the Hedgehog movie may actually be the best video game movie of all time: I excited like a little kid from beginning to end even during the less important parts of the film, and I can't wait for the inevitable sequel👏 If you are a Sonic fan, you MUST see this movie: chances are extremely high that you won't regret it☺️
It should be noted that the Sonic Movie didn't really have that much effect on the closure of the MPC Vancouver. MPC Vancouver was a Third party and wasn't owned by Paramount in any way, Sonic just so happened to be the last film the company worked on before closure, they also worked on Bombs like Cats and Dolittle so you could also blame those films if you really wanted to. It should be noted that the Parent company Technicolor stated the real reason they shut down the Vancouver branch was because of market pressures in the Vancouver area and lacking tax breaks, redesigning Sonic had NOTHING to do with it. Additionally if any Third party VFX company closes down after a movie is released it has nothing to do with the Film or the Studio its because of bad management at the VFX company, Paramount asked them to do a job and they did it simple as that. Apologies to anyone who lost they're job though, your hard work comes through in the final product.
I don’t know about Johnny but me and my theater yelled and clapped with joy when that mid credits scene happened. I wish Johnny had touched on that a little more but I can tell he liked that.
I got the impression he forgot he had the quill since shortly after he found it he got socked in the jaw. He got so narrow-mindedly focused on taking down Tom and the fact it was in his pocket just wasn't on his mind. Being super smart doesn't mean you can't be distracted.
My sister has this theory that Sonic's power comes from absorbing energy around him in whatever form it should take, such as wind, electricity, even the power of friendship as seen in the final confrontation between Sonic and Robotnik.
About the enchiladas, I’m going take a wild guess that Chaos has already wiped most of them out, like in the games, during Sonic’s time on earth. Heck, maybe it was right after sonic escaped because they had to settle with going after the chaos emeralds instead. Also, Remember that humans are a thing in the games, especially the adventure games. Just saying maybe they have station square on earth, probably GUN and the ARK too.
Agreed that is probable especially when you consider the Echidna tribe that was after Sonic likely was a rival clan to Tikal's that tried to steal the Emeralds who mistakenly think Tikal's tribe owns them given Chaos existence, but because they do they went after Sonic for his speed powers as a way to combat them which ended up failing so they continue the onslaught of going after her clan thus said Adventure 1 events happen with the exception of Knuckles as a kid or otherwise how they plan to put him in the timeline as the lone Echidna survivor works.
Yeah, humans was ALWAYS something that the Japanese team had in place for the official Sonic mythology. so, when people say that humans have no place in the Sonic mythos, it's just eyeroll-worthy, especially considering how it makes no sense for there to be ONLY Dr. Robotnik and absolutely no one else.
Don't know about station square, but GUN and ARK could definitely be introduced. Like, maybe GUN was the name of a top secret military project spearheaded by the DOD and the Pentagon alongside Robotnik's grand father to develop the eclipse cannon. Not that hard of a stretch, given that Robotnik is more or less a shadow operative of the military, a brilliant scientist that built the US militaries defense system and technically doesn't exist.
I honestly hope whoever makes the sequel is a big fan of the series so he can translate some of those stories into film form. I would love to see Shadow in movie form.
@@sebastiancintron29 I legit thought the film's post-credits scene would be The Government acquiring one of Sonic's quills and using it to clone him into their own super-fast hedgehog; Shadow.
I very much agree with this video. This movie was great, but I'm way more excited for the sequel now. This movie did a good job of setting up the universe for future movies. Now we have an explanation as to why a human Robotnik would be in Sonic's world. Hopefully then they can just follow the story of Sonic 1-3. And who knows maybe if that is successful, they can jump back to the human world and do the adventure story for movie 3? Either way, I'm eager to see where Paramount will go with this one.
Lol love this review! Probably gonna have to post this again though! - Online, there's actually a small novel called "Sonic Movie Official Novelization." -Basically, it's a canon but longer version of the movie. Everything they couldn't manage to put in. It goes really in-depth with sonic lore, and introduces some new lore. -Sonic is like a charged chaos emerald. They actually mention that the energy within sonic.. is chaos energy. -Longclaw was originally apart of a noble group of warrior owls, that protected the galaxy and green-hill and it's inhabitants.. though, as time went on, she became more of a wise mother, than a battle warrior. -The echidna tribe in the movie have certain masks and hoods in the movie. These symbols signify that they have sworn allegiance to a series of characters we have never seen before... the warlords. A group of universal evil that has been chasing sonic, to find a way to unleash his hidden chaos energy. There are a lot of cool bits of lore in this book, and it goes in depth on how green hill's loop-de-loops even formed in the first place. All of this lore can even be read in a small preview on amazon or google lol
Update, I checked it out. I really am glad the movie turned out the way it did because, if the novel would've been anything to go by, this movie could've turned out way worse. Tom (who doesn't care about anyone and only does things because he's bored out of his mind, in the novel) and Sonic (who constantly tries so damn hard to nostalgia pander to Jaleel White-Sonic fans) are also super annoying and unlikable in the novelization and the story just goes all over the place, having 3 seperate times they need to tell the origin of something so the viewer can follow along. What a mess... Still interesting though. The movie itself is great. Just the book is bad, but of course it'd be when it's based on an early version of the script/movie.
I was really impressed by the movie: it wasn’t perfect, and there were minor tiny things I wish had been done differently, but overall I think it was an excellent debut for the blue hedgehog onto the Big Screen. I’m probably in the same mind as many other fans when I say that I want the sequel to explore Sonic’s own world more - I feel it would just have so much more creative potential and the bright colourful levels adapters from the games would be a real eye catcher for kids. I also really hope that Knuckles makes an appearance, because I just really want to see him and Sonic have a full-on smack-down between them. I wonder if the Chaos Emeralds will make an appearance. Also, I really can’t wait to see what they do with Eggman in the next film, he was definitely one of the best parts for me. Cheers for an awesome little review Johnny!
“Can I talk to you over here please . . . Pin yourself to to the wall.” *audible sigh followed by literally just that* I found this, more hilarious than people give it credit honestly lol
I like how the rings act like the goal rings that take him to special stages in the 2d games. Its an awesome detail considering the special stages were like alternate dimensions, so it makes since That the portal rings act like that in the film.
there's a mario movie in the works and i hope, hope, HOPE that metroid script that was pitched gets picked up by a GOOD director cuz damnit we need more good vid game movies (not just a smash universe)
10:40 Gotta say, I was born ‘99 and grew up with sonic, and whoever voiced sonic BEFORE roger Craig ( ‘06, Unleashed, SonicX) in my opinion, is THE voice of sonic. The perfect amount of “frat dude” and genuine guy mix in his voice. Wish I could remember his name, feels disrespectful, but he’s my favorite.
Gotta agree with the fart joke bit. I was like "ooh he's eating chili dogs! Yeah!" And then he farted later and I was just like "ughh, well that sucked."
Before watching this video, I went into the Sonic movie thinking it'll be an alright movie. After watching it I was in happy tears. This movie gave the fuck you to other game movies. Especially Ratchet and Clank. It was great for me.
Which is really ironic, considering how Ratchet & Clank, comparatively-speaking anyway, seemed more accurate to its source material than Sonic the Hedgehog was. I mean, the original game was more biting satire, and had a far more aggressive style to it, but at least there were more than two living things from the games.
I'm gonna be honest, I really loved everything in this movie. I found it refreshing to have a couple in a movie start the movie happy and end the movie happy, there were no forced romance plots that have plagued other "animated character in the real world" movies, Tom and Maddie were happy together from the start, so that was something the movie didn't have to worry about. Jim Carrey: What can I say that hasn't already been said? He was amazing. Ben Schwartz is amazing, I've been vaguely familiar with his work for years, and then loved him as Dewey in DuckTales. He had a very unique take on Sonic, actually playing him as a lonely teenager with a sense of responsibility to keep his power a secret. Sonic is canonically 15 after all. I really look forward to the sequel, and what they do. I could see Dr. Robotnik somehow finding his way to Sonic's home world and tricking Knuckles, who would likely be the current leader of the tribe, that Sonic plans to attack them, and Knuckles falling for it like as he does. Then Sonic and Knuckles team up at the end when they bond over some sort of common interest or something, and Knuckles realizes he was lied to so that Robotnik could get the Echidna Tribe's Master Emerald to power his machines. (Basically Sonic 3, but with some relevance to the human characters from this movie)
When there is a reference to the Half-Pipe and Blue Spheres in the credits of the movie which were both ways that you could acquire the Chaos Emeralds, but the Emeralds themselves weren’t even in the movie. “We were on the verge of greatness, we were this close!”
I think the sequel is going to reference Chaos Emeralds. With the build-up it's likely that the sequel will loosely adapt Death Egg saga and the third movie will adapt Sonic Adventure. Besides, Chaos Emeralds are referenced on Sonic's map.
5:23 Same! I was surprised to see that! Because I never saw her before. (But that was also around the time when my coat zipper decided to get stuck, so I didn't get her full picture yet.)
i had lots of fun watching the movie. The sequel will be epic.. i think the saloon scene was a direct reference to Sonic Mania´s stage he even spins on the chair
I liked how Sonic's radioactive electricity power, beyond just kickstarting the plot (in a really emotionally effective scene IMO) and looking badass in the climax, give a realistic explanation as to why Sonic can Spin Dash through solid metal and survive, beyond just cartoon logic and durability. 👌 I also like how he figures out he can do that by complete accident.
I`m 100% with you John, if anything this movie has me hyped for the sequel. I'm down for a CG heavy Sonic adventure with the classic characters and Jim Carrey's Robotnik ( now looking a lot more like the in the source material) as the only major live action component.
One of the things that was questioned at first in this movie was having Jim Carrey play the role of Dr. Robotnik aka Eggman. But I think it was the perfect pick. If you want to do a villain like Eggman justice on the big screen, you need an over-the-top actor. He proved that he's still got it after so long. One subtle detail in the movie they got right about Robotnik was the fact he was an orphan. Never explained in the games or the comics or even that one book I read. Can't remember the name but it's the only one that mentions Robotnik's orphan status. Only relatives that were named at all in the Sonic canon are his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, and Maria. Maria is listed as Eggman's cousin.
2:45 From the sounds of things, it wasn’t just because of Sonic that the studio in question, Moving Picture Company, shut down. And there were multiple studios working on the film, including Blur who did work on CGI cutscenes for some previous Sonic games, eg Shadow the Hedgehog.
I enjoyed the film. Especially the action scenes like the car chase and the final battle. I feel the way Sonic is characterized is probably my favourite of all Sonic Media, he's more emotional and fun than he's been in recent games and media. My issues were rather minor, like i really wish they didn't make Sonic floss. It's silly to say yes, but it felt very forced unlike his trailer dance. Jim as Robotnik was great. I think everyone knows that. I even like things like seeing him in his flight ship got me excited. That final battle where sonic hits against the ship got me really pumped. I do feel I'm more excited at the idea of the sequel now that I've been sitting thinking about it. Though i can't wait until this film streams as i already want to watch the action scenes again
I thought the mushroom place was a reference to Mushroom Hill zone... I could be mistaken I suppose, but I was just thinking sonic 3 and knuckles with the appearance of the echidna tribe and all.
That's funny, that shirt that SomeCallMeJohnny is the same shirt I recently got from TheYetee.com when they were doing their Awesome Games Done Quick 2020 Marathon in January. I just got the shirt recently and loving it since Sonic the Hedgehog the movie is good, though honestly I liked Detective Pikachu better in terms of world building and characters. Sonic the Hedgehog the movie isn't bad though, but I liked the Tim Goodman and Detective Pikachu partnership that was so lighthearted and funny than the Sonic and Tom relationship since the Sonic and Tom relationship reminded me of Alvin and the Chipmunks a bit. Still, this is excellent to see you do a review of this. So to clarify the good live action videogame movies that happened, here are some of the bests (Pokemon Anime doesn't count since I'm referring to the Live Action ones, same goes with the new Mortal Kombat 2020 animated movie and the Ratchet and Clank CGI movie since again, that one isn't live action): 1. Mortal Kombat (1995) 2. Warcraft (2016) 3. Detective Pikachu (2019) 4. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) I'm thinking Hollywood is taking a good lesson from the mistakes of Street Fighter the Live Action Movie, Super Mario Bros the Movie, and many others on HOW NOT to do live action videogame adaptations. We got the good future here. :)
happy 1st anniversary sonic the hedgehog movie!!! :3 having re watched it i still love this movie just as much as when i saw it with my dad(holds a special place in my heart being the last movie we saw.:3),handled human characters right for me as i like tom and maddie(and jojo being a heartwarming origin for sonic's shoes.),has my favorite versions of sonic(love him being "what if aosth sonic was in the game universe" while having a interestingly new focus of loneliness alongside his laid back, fun loving adventurous feel i got more from him even more than the adventure games.i'd love to see ben be the new voice for sonic.) and dr. eggman(jim carrey is awesome as robotnik being funny but also more intimidating than other versions of eggman with the "where evil grows"/him beating up the thug being my favorite moments along with his interactions with agent stone.),is a fun introduction to the series and does a good job with it's world(love sonic's ring portals and his chaos energy.) i'm hyped for the sequel and can't wait to see sonic's relationship with tails(& knuckles) along with maybe being the introduction of a sega cinematic universe.(i loved that awesome sega intro and think as a stinger for the sequel robotnik steals sonic's rings and opens portals to other sega ip's like billy hatcher, shenmue, virtua fighter, yakuza, dinosaur king, jet set radio, alex kidd, nights, bayonetta especially seeing her interact/have friendly banter with sonic & tails, sakura wars, space channel 5,sega hard girls, puyo puyo, persona 3-5,catherine,house of the dead, skies of arcadia, rhythm thief, vectorman, streets of rage, clockwork knight, shinobi, space harrier, phantasy star, valkyria chronicles, ecco the dolphin, gunstar heroes, panzer dragoon, golden axe, toejam and earl, samba de amigo and hatsune miku with sonic and friends teaming up with the sega heroes.:3)
I have a theory. That Quill that Eggman still has? Sure seems like a nice blueprint to make a uh...DOUBLE of Sonic if you will, made out of the scraps of METAL refined. Like a.. METAL SONIC if you will.
Sonic's behavior I took it as a more juvenile version. Classic Sonic is a young Sonic, Modern Sonic is a more adult-ish Sonic. This version of Sonic is the inbetween. Easily excited yet still snarky. The hip-and-cool trait is still not there but it is in a process. That's how I took it, at least. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) was just amazing every single time he was there. It made SO much sense to make him the evil doctor. So over the top, so interesting to watch... perfect balance of malice, whim and fun factor. Still, this movie is perfectly solid, and surprisingly I would put it almost up if not equal to Detective Pikachu for surprising me with a really good time. Also they played Friends from Hyper Potions in the Green Hill Zone at the beginning and a short piano version of Green Hill near the end and I freaking adored it.
I was also skeptical of the movie at first. But when i watched it, i ended up enjoying way more than i thought i would. Jim Carey was amazing, the scene where he's dancing is the best part of the movie for me. Looking forward to the sequel. I hope Hollywood will look at this and finally understand that fan feedback is important. Not always though.
Loved the vid on this Johnny, i'd like to see more movie, show, TV, anime, manga, etc, Vs episodes in this kind of fashion. Hell he could dramatically read off the headlines on a newspaper and i'd still sit here to watch it.
I loved the movie. So many references! But if you aren’t a Sonic fan, I don’t know if it’s for you. I on the others hand, am a die hard Sonic fan, so I loved it! 😊😄
One friend of mine isn't Sonic fan but she wasn't mind going to watch the movie with me. And she really enjoyed it a lot. Now she's willing to watch the movie again and also she thinks Robotnik is one of the best Carrey's roles. I was glad to hear it, because she has a good taste in movies and she dislikes many of them, and the fact she likes the Sonic movie makes me really happy.
To add to the Sonic giving nicknames deal, I can see him doing that for Tails at the beginning of the next film. It's easy for people to forget that Tails is actually the nickname Sonic gave him and that his real name is Miles Prowler. It'll be interesting to see how him getting the nickname in the next film will go down.
I think the reason he didn't study the quill right away is because he'd met Sonic shortly after finding the quill. And once he met Sonic, he was instantly more obsessed with Sonic himself than the quill. He remembers the quill and studies it, but it was kinda obvious throughout the movie that he found Sonic to be a challenge he couldn't turn down. Even after he was beaten in his first very ambitious attempt to catch them on the road, he was growing more and more obsessed.
I was thinking about how there was never really a spike pit reference, until you mentioned he lost his rings. I then realized he lost his rings on a building with a giant spike on it.
If they ever did a video game adaptation of the film, that would be great. Because I miss the days of movie tie-in games, as some of them were legitimately good.
@@keelanbarron928 There's definitely been a ton of mods for various Sonic games that add in a movie-style model for Sonic. I remember first noticing the era was coming to an end when 9 ended up not getting a videogame adaptation/tie-in. (I imagined Ratchet & Clank meets Fallout.) Years later, it pretty much gave its dying gasps with Ratchet & Clank: The Game Based on the Movie Based on the Game and Cars 3: Driven to Win. Once I realized there was no Toy Story 4 videogame in sight, that's when the realization set in that it was truly the end of an era.

@@Lugbzurg my mistake
He voiced Grounder in the Pingas cartoon and Robotnik in Underground
Robotnik.
Sonic is 12 in this movie. So yeah, I think they are building up a franchise.

I am putting this here just because someone will say something about it:
The VFX studio that worked on the film DID NOT GO UNDER BECAUSE OF THE SONIC MOVIE!
The situation still sucks tho even if the cause is different and also knowing that the people who actually hauled ass to improve Sonic's design and animations are not reaping the reward for their efforts sucks even more
From what I've heard, the studio was working on two movies, one being sonic including the redesign, and the other one being cats.
Well said.
I agree and since they want a trilogy out this movie franchise, it's best to start safe and not be a massive train wreck.
That's the most accurate way to describe this movie. I hope they do a sequel and I hope it embraces the source material
i love this comment and its what i hope is done with the illuminations mario movie.finding footing with setting the world and characters up(have mario, peach, luigi, bowser, toadette, the koopalings and maybe daisy be the characters used and keeping their designs one to one like their 3d designs) having a fun plot(even if its bowser kidnaps peach have some great dialogue like peach befriending the koopalings or she escapes like in 3d land or mario adventures.maybe even just have bowser attack the mushroom kingdom and kidnap everyone with mario saving them and helping him as partners on his journey like super mario run) good writing(at least along the lines of the sports games or mario and luigi which is the main games with more story and personality charm.) and just overall great interaction between mario, luigi, peach and bowser like sonics good relationship with donut lord and his wife resulting in them becoming a family at the end of the sonic movie.i hear rumors of it possibly taking inspiration from the super mario adventures comic and whether or not its true i think at the very least its a great way to make a mario movie that plays it safe while being fun with its characters and freedom their charm has.(especially with nintendo keeping an eye on the development like how sega kept their eyes on the writers of the sonic boom cartoon and the movie.:3)
[0ctopusComp1etely] This right here is what so many people that are against this film are not understanding.
The filmmakers want to make all of the ingredients come together in a smooth and methodical way.
They’re trying to make eye candy AND GOOD FILMS. Not just eye candy and only eye candy. Damn.
all I can say is Robotnik has a great taste in music
There is a blink and you'll miss it easter egg during his dancing scene where he pulls up a Crush 40 playlist.
@@Quillz06 oh crap I must've blinked!
Considering Eggman has Sonic's quill at the end and it seemed to have some energy left in it, I won't be shocked if Metal Sonic shows up in the sequel
Honestly I kind of hope he makes into a clone that's the original design

XD

My sister has this theory that Sonic's power comes from absorbing energy around him in whatever form it should take, such as wind, electricity, even the power of friendship as seen in the final confrontation between Sonic and Robotnik.
Not a bad theory.

Lol love this review! Probably gonna have to post this again though! -
Online, there's actually a small novel called "Sonic Movie Official Novelization."
-Basically, it's a canon but longer version of the movie.
Wow, thanks for pointing that out, I'll have to check that out someday.
So, the echidnas are basically chasing after a walking chaos emerald. Huh. Faithful to the lore, but with a twist.
@@ABlob wow!, didn't know it was pretty bad. I only read the preview lol
I watched it with my friends and we all said “Uuuhh meooow?” in unison as soon as the scene happened because the rest of the theatre was empty.
SFPD, OPEN UP!
Uh... *Meow?*
I’m glad they kept that in.
The delivery was slightly different from the initial trailer, too
Funny considering people said that joke was cringe and unfunny and now people are OK with it.
"Mom, Dad, how was I created?"
"Uhhhhhhh Meow?"
“Can I talk to you over here please
.
.
.
Pin yourself to to the wall.”
*audible sigh followed by literally just that*
I found this, more hilarious than people give it credit honestly lol
at first, i thought of quick silver for that scene. then i remembered when Fry drank 100 cups of coffee and did the same thing
I give it a 9/10. Really solid

Gotta say, I was born ‘99 and grew up with sonic, and whoever voiced sonic BEFORE roger Craig ( ‘06, Unleashed, SonicX) in my opinion, is THE voice of sonic. The perfect amount of “frat dude” and genuine guy mix in his voice. Wish I could remember his name, feels disrespectful, but he’s my favorite.
Jason Griffith
Are you talking about Ryan Drummond?
Gotta agree with the fart joke bit. I was like "ooh he's eating chili dogs! Yeah!" And then he farted later and I was just like "ughh, well that sucked."
Ya but have you eaten chili before? It makes you fart.
All I could think of when i saw the missiles and other super slow motion scenes was, well.... ZA WARUDO.
The Child from the Mandalorian and Yoda are different characters.
I feel that this movie was a great introduction into a Movie series for Sonic. I loved the movie, but it was still just a great movie.
When there is a reference to the Half-Pipe and Blue Spheres in the credits of the movie which were both ways that you could acquire the Chaos Emeralds, but the Emeralds themselves weren’t even in the movie.
“We were on the verge of greatness, we were this close!”
Don't forget, San Fransisco 342 miles and the doughnuts.
They're saving it for the sequel.
I didn't mind. I felt this is a focus on Robotnik and Sonic's story, not the emeralds
I think the sequel is going to reference Chaos Emeralds. With the build-up it's likely that the sequel will loosely adapt Death Egg saga and the third movie will adapt Sonic Adventure. Besides, Chaos Emeralds are referenced on Sonic's map.
@@robertkovarna8294 Hold up... What do "342 miles" and doughnuts have to do with referencing the Sonic mythos?
5:23
Same!
The squirrel from over the hedge did the speed sequence first lol
Would’ve loved to have seen a full podcast for the Sonic movie, but I still like this style, too!
I also like how he figures out he can do that by complete accident.
Was I the only one who thought he was going to say “RAID: Shadow Legends” at 2:59?
But does Raid have a NEVERENDING PASTA BOWL?!
Tahraki491 IT NEVER ENDS!!!
2:45 From the sounds of things, it wasn’t just because of Sonic that the studio in question, Moving Picture Company, shut down.
And there were multiple studios working on the film, including Blur who did work on CGI cutscenes for some previous Sonic games, eg Shadow the Hedgehog.
I feel like there’s gonna be 3 films to be honest, they could make a trilogy. Also I thought the film was great, can’t wait for the sequel 😁
10:52 "When you think of Sonic the Hedgehog, beit classic or modern..."
*shows two pictured of modern sonic*
This is the best Jim Carrey performance in a long time
He also is doing a new show for people who might not remember. It has to do with the concept of a Mr. Roers Neighborhood but for adults.
Rogers I mean't rogers.
15:28 He didn't know how much he'd truly would mean those words until just a couple of weeks.
So to clarify the good live action videogame movies that happened, here are some of the bests (Pokemon Anime doesn't count since I'm referring to the Live Action ones, same goes with the new Mortal Kombat 2020 animated movie and the Ratchet and Clank CGI movie since again, that one isn't live action):
1. Mortal Kombat (1995)
2. Warcraft (2016)
3. Detective Pikachu (2019)
4. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
I'm thinking Hollywood is taking a good lesson from the mistakes of Street Fighter the Live Action Movie, Super Mario Bros the Movie, and many others on HOW NOT to do live action videogame adaptations.
We got the good future here. :)
happy 1st anniversary sonic the hedgehog movie!!! :3
having re watched it i still love this movie just as much as when i saw it with my dad(holds a special place in my heart being the last movie we saw.:3),handled human characters right for me as i like tom and maddie(and jojo being a heartwarming origin for sonic's shoes.),has my favorite versions of sonic(love him being "what if aosth sonic was in the game universe" while having a interestingly new focus of loneliness alongside his laid back, fun loving adventurous feel i got more from him even more than the adventure games.i'd love to see ben be the new voice for sonic.) and dr. eggman(jim carrey is awesome as robotnik being funny but also more intimidating than other versions of eggman with the "where evil grows"/him beating up the thug being my favorite moments along with his interactions with agent stone.),is a fun introduction to the series and does a good job with it's world(love sonic's ring portals and his chaos energy.)
i'm hyped for the sequel and can't wait to see sonic's relationship with tails(& knuckles) along with maybe being the introduction of a sega cinematic universe.(i loved that awesome sega intro and think as a stinger for the sequel robotnik steals sonic's rings and opens portals to other sega ip's like billy hatcher, shenmue, virtua fighter, yakuza, dinosaur king, jet set radio, alex kidd, nights, bayonetta especially seeing her interact/have friendly banter with sonic & tails, sakura wars, space channel 5,sega hard girls, puyo puyo, persona 3-5,catherine,house of the dead, skies of arcadia, rhythm thief, vectorman, streets of rage, clockwork knight, shinobi, space harrier, phantasy star, valkyria chronicles, ecco the dolphin, gunstar heroes, panzer dragoon, golden axe, toejam and earl, samba de amigo and hatsune miku with sonic and friends teaming up with the sega heroes.:3)
3:01 Olive Garden? I see whatcha did there! xD
I have a theory.
That Quill that Eggman still has?
Sure seems like a nice blueprint to make a uh...DOUBLE of Sonic if you will, made out of the scraps of METAL refined.
Like a.. METAL SONIC if you will.
The movie was great to me! Seen only once though hope the next one is even better!
Okay you got an actual laugh out of me with the Olive Garden bit thank you I needed it so much this week
The movie being good is one thing, but I cannot wait for the dope memes that will arise as a result.
You bet they'll be a subreddit soon
There were memes even before (with the "can I keep it" moment)
*aims shotgun*
Memes have done more damage to Sonic than 06. I will not allow them to prosper, good sir!
olive garden memes are already here
@@CuteAnimeGirl *starts firing machine guns*
*I SAY THEE NAY, FOUL MEMES! THERE WILL BE NO ABOMINATIONS CREATED THIS DAY!*
I'm not an Sonic fan, myself. But I'll check it out anyway.
My mom's not a Sonic fan (she's aware of what Sonic is) and she was brought to tears by this movie.
Well, this wasn’t what I was expecting. But I expected not to expect something so it doesn’t count.
I loved this movie, definitely one of the better Video Game Movie Adaptations.
Well even if they don't officially do it, i wouldn't be surprised if it's done for the sonic hacking contest.
@@Lugbzurg true, but not a video game movie. (Again, that's where SHC comes in. Hell, they have the sprites for the game as well with the credit song having sprite versions of them.)
And 90% of movie tie in games were trash, do I'm glad that era is long gone and dead.
I want that game to have old movie design as an unlockable skin
Ironically, Paramount released a movie back in 2006 with DreamWorks that features CGI creatures with a scene where someone (Hammy) stops time. And that film is called “Over the HEDGE”.
Pretty good, very enjoyable, very impressive redemption story and can't wait for the sequel.
For those worried about the animators who lost their jobs, I'm currently in animation school in the same area where the studio was located. My teachers are personally in the industry and we were told by multiple teachers that basically every studio dropped everything to throw a career fair for them. As far as I know, most of them got picked up by other studios.
