    Not gonna lie this game introduced me to the series I tought the werehog was the coolest thing to exist same for sonic especially the personality but I love the werehog cool combos, cool looking and good design (my favorite sonic game)

    The thing with "getting new players with the werehog" its because at the time, fighting style games like gow, and the main character being transformed into something like one zelda where like transforms into a werewolf were pretty successful at the time.

    I would sya the only main thing that holds Unleashed back for most is the medal collectin but even then my first time playin Unleashed I only had to backtrack ONCE after gettin really far through the game & it didn't take long either. It's def my fav MODERN Sonic game & prob my 2nd fav as a whole

      The thing is you can skip most of the media collecting anyway by simply giving the Professor souvenirs using your rings.

    Wow, Unleashed did some ludonarrative stuff with its game modes. Most likely unintentionally. Literally night and day. Let alone bad and good. The complex duality of 'hog.

    I strongly disagree with most critics and players regarding the Werehog stages; they may not be the peak of character action gameplay, far from it, but I was surprised to find on a recent playthrough that prioritizing pumping your combat level early on to unlock as many combos as you can, looking at those combos as a toolset with which you can better react to a broader and broader range of scenarios and enemy formations as the game progresses, and making sure to take full advantage of mechanics like unleash mode, throwing and swinging enemies into one another, the hidden powerups, etc., became really satisfying once I got into the groove of it. Pushing all these mechanics as far as I could in tandem with one another really made them sing; the more I put into them, the more I got out of it: the combat felt far less repetitive, the stages became quicker and smoother to beat than I'd ever known they could be, at which point I really started to feel the sense of progression as the game went on, carefully considering whether to spend my next big chunk of EXP on a shiny new tool for my toolbox that would help me cover even more situations, a boost to all my existing ones, or something else that could help with survivability. By the final third of the game, I actually found myself looking forward to the next Werehog stage more than the next daytime Sonic one, believe it or not.
    In talking to friends and others who've played the game over the years, I think a lot of people go into the Werehog stages not really taking them seriously, subsequently neglect to learn and engage with one or more layers of its mechanics and systems, and end up getting that repetitive, slow, mashy slog of an experience as a result, because the core of the Werehog gameplay hinges on all its facets working in harmony with one another; if you take one or more of its components away, that's when it starts to fall apart. Whether or not this style of gameplay actually *belongs* in a Sonic game is another debate entirely (there are plenty of people who don't want hack-and-slash character action in their Sonic game and that's totally fair), but I nevertheless find myself disappointed with how often people overlook what it actually brings to the table if one is willing to fully engage with it.

    • @AxelKjolhede

      This is actually the best critique I've read about the Werehog, most people completely disregard those points

    • @InfiniteDXI
      @InfiniteDXI ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AxelKjolhede ye exactly
      this comment actually shows one thang dat most folks don't even notice or mention: that the Werehog is pretty damn player-dependent & so the polarizing experience usually comes from the players themselves + how THEY were handlin' the mechanics and shit.
      if you juss go into this game not takin' it seriously, then it can become a drag 'n that's very much in-line with how the vocal mfs in 2008 were handling the Werehog. mfs were not takin' it as seriously as they *should* 'n thus had a shitty, bland, and hella boring experience

    • @kirotalksyt
      @kirotalksyt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think I would've liked it if I could see what new moves I was getting when I levelled up and decide on which ones I wanted to have, for example, more crowd control attacks, big single target moves, etc. Kind of like a skill tree in a lot of modern action games. I didn't really know what I was getting if I levelled up my combat to get new combos, so it was a bit of a gamble, whereas with something like Strength or Life, I knew what I was getting will be useful, even if it wasn't exactly flashy. I think the Werehog does have some depth if you engage with it, I just think the game could do a better job of guiding the player towards that. Great comment 👍

    • @bigchunchy
      @bigchunchy ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kirotalksyt Fair enough! The game explains each system in isolation but doesn't do the best job at tutorializing how they all fit together in practice, and having a skill tree rather than the linear procession of random moves probably would have been a more engaging way to encourage diving deeper into the combat.
      Perhaps the actual stat upgrades could be relegated to some other unlock method like collectibles (maybe replacing the medals while we're at it) while the exp system could be fully geared towards moves? I do quite enjoy the game as it is, but it's definitely got room for improvement in some areas.
      Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read my comment! Love your videos!

  • @extremmefan7305

    I feel like the reason the night stages exists is to not have to make more levels and instead just reuse ones that were already made so those don't feel like they're going to waste.
    The game's amount of unique levels, counting day/night/hub all as one, is actually pretty average for a Sonic game, so if anything it feels like the night stages are there for the same reason Colors has multiple acts, Generations has both Classic and Modern variations AND missions, hell even the recurring themes of Shadow the Hedgehog and Adventure 2 (as well as the "same stage with a different name for act 2" of Heroes) and the multiple visits to the same stages with different characters in 06 and Adventure 1.
    i.e. for the sake of more content. Not padding, but content. (Padding is more like how it makes the medals necessary for progress, which... yea, no, terrible idea)

    I remember the very first time I beat that last level where you switch between Hedgehog and Werehog (which in itself was actually a neat concept to change during a level!) it took me over 45 minutes!
    There were several places where the level designer knew exactly what kind of nonesense they were building there and put an Extra Life right in front of the Checkpoint.
    (gettin Platinum back then was really a test of my sanity lol)

    I really like the idea of sonic being sad his friends don’t recognize him. It makes sense. He’s an extrovert, and while he acts like himself and his face is fine amy didn’t even get a chance to notice that because of how quickly she ran off. I think the’bring in new fans’ part may have been because of the werewolf craze.

  • @InfiniteDXI

    Hm, mostly understandable take on the Werehog.
    Think so far I just generally disagree with both level times & how "tedious & time-consuming" it is.
    Taking longer as the Werehog in these levels, especially considering the genre he's taking after, makes natural sense. Plus I think some 1st time players would take longer than others since they may be roaming around an area for more time than they really *should* & lack knowledge on certain mechanics, since it's their blind playthrough.
    I'd say if you were playing Devil May Cry missions for the 1st time, then you could very well see some similar clear times there. So it's more like it comes with the territory and less of it being a "problem".
    Most Werehog stages can actually be beaten between 5 minutes to 8 minutes, with only 2 of them being around the 10 minute mark, so I see it as standard Sonic fair.
    Mastering the gameplay & understanding the stage layout CAN lead to faster times, and that your 1st runs of either Day or Night stages won't be good regardless of how much time they take.
    Which leads to my next point, the combos.
    Seeing them as "novelty" and thus saying things like "once the novelty of them wears off..." is probably the last thing you want to see them as, since most combos DO have mechanics attached to them that are beneficial for optimizing *any* Night stage run.
    Doing it for the sake of coolness & not *also* considering their mechanics is what LEADS to combat feeling repetitive, tedious, & time-consuming imo.
    If anything I'd say 1st time players should approach this whole game with an open mind, and especially knowing that their 1st runs *won't* be the deciding ones to fully get them into this game since they are NEW to this & as such won't master it at the same time.
    "No shit" moment yes except a lot of people fail to apply it to the Werehog, and it should be something to *at least* know & understand whether or not it's your preferred gameplay style.
    Funnily enough you could try approaching it like a FromSoft/Soulsborne game in that you clearly aren't going to be doing that well during your blind playthrough & that's *NOT* a bad thing; and if anything you always free to retry & do better in these stages at any point of said playthrough.
    There are people out there that actually AREN'T huge fans of the Boost levels as they simply don't have the reaction time for that & can't get down with the level design structure of them since it's again, very reactionary, so that pretty much puts the whole game into perspective.
    Anyway. I see what you say as a valid take of someone going through this game for the 1st time & not being a fan of the Werehog *to begin with* due to its nature, just that in reality THAT particular experience is not what the Werehog's all cracked up to be.
    Just like with the Day stages, there's more to the Night stages than what meets the eye; and personally I say it's important for anyone regardless of their preference to at least know that & acknowledge that since the Werehog is really no exception to the Sonic philosophy of bettering yourself & mastering the gameplay thru cleverly speedy means. That's just me tho.

      I can understand where you're coming from. The Night levels do have depth to them. Like you said, coming from the perspective of a first time (or at least someone who hasn't played it in ages) player, it became a slog for me to get through the Night levels with all the encounters, puzzles, medals etc.

    I don't think the werehog is bad. It may slow down the game but you gotta appreciate the effort put in the levels and the gameplay. The werehog isn't broken and you don't encounter any glitches without actually performing them. The only reason why people don't like it is because they just wanna play the day stages as soon as possible. It's like in SA2 where people just wanna play the speed levels and ignore the treasure hunting stages

    Sonic unleashed was the first modern sonic piece of media I ever watched.
    I used to watch all the playthroughs on repeat, wishing to play it for myself, I even begged my parents to get me a ps3 so I could play the game!
    And when I finally got it, I was amazed! The graphics were amazing, the levels were so fast and fun to play; and while the night stages took me a really long time to master, I really enjoyed them! I thank my little brother, and his the God of war obsession, for introducing me to the hack and slash genre, without it maybe I wouldn't really like the night-time stages.
    Thank you so much again for you videos ❤

    My own relationship with the werehog stuff in this game is a bit weird... 'cause I'm not gonna lie, I actually love replaying some of those levels.
    But others are so badly designed it makes me wish Sonic Team had cut them from the game completely, or at least reduced them to the level of those optional mini-challenge stages.
    And as much as I love... most... of Sonic Unleashed, I think its biggest problem is that it never stops trying to tell you that it's one game when anyone playing it can clearly see that it's two. Even in the places where both halves completely work, they never actually fit together. And while I can generally tolerate the duality, I can certainly see how easy it would be to end up resenting it, when the moment you actually start enjoying yourself it forces you to go play something else.

  • @TheLivelovelaugh165
    @TheLivelovelaugh165 ปีที่แล้ว

    The saddest thing about the werehog is the gameplay could've been different. The cutscenes clearly demonstrate the devs planned the werehog to be momentum based much like classic sonic. Every single cutscene, the werehog is performing tricks, never seen in the game, that carries his speed.
    I can imagine the original idea between Day/Night stages was more reflex reaction vs rhythmic actions. The werehog still plays with this "rhythmic flow" in the clock tower and Skyscraper Scamper levels.
    But someone REALLY advocated for the God of War approach and that's what we ended up with....

    lol, you and I have very different opinions to the day and night time levels. I don’t hate the day time missions but I screw those up a lot because I usually end up getting killed by the stupidest stuff, not seeing what’s ahead of my because I’m going so fast, slipping off or missing a ledge, boosting so hard I go off a cliff, and some of those side levels can just be so awful with how they’re designed. So I’m not the biggest fan of a majority of day time missions. But the night time missions, despite their flaws and repetitiveness, I actually like more because I’m moving slower but going at a better, more easier to control pace. The combat feels mostly good. And the boss battles are especially great. Yeah platforming isn’t always good there so I agree with that.

    No offense but eegmanland results to describe night stage times doesn't work because it is a hybrid stage. Also thanks for saying they aren't that bad. Fun fact once you beat the dragon road hot dog stages for the night you can beat it easily under three minutes. Including most once you just sprint through most of the enemy hoards, most are averaged around ten minutes but I understand in the beginning like myself the levels took longer. As you play the game further you can add more speed to the night stages, especially with that drill combo that boosts you. This would be my defense of the night levels lol

Yeah, the Stage 1 of each lever are really good and some of the OST are great, but apart from that the game didn't bring many things to the table. The wisps were an interesting but not very well executed mechanic, the story and plot were pretty much non-existent, and Pontac and Graff just made it all worse by making the characters not feel like themselves, which holds the game back a lot

    Sonic Unleashed was my first sonic game. The wii version that is; but I got my hands on the 360 version a couple years later. So I've beaten both versions of this game multiple times as a kid. And looking back on them with these videos is really nostalgic for me. Nostalgia shouldn't be measured when rating a game so I'm not even going to try. All I can say is I absolutely adore Sonic Unleashed. It's powerful, it's whimsical, it's badass; and I never got tired of the werehog battle music as a kid and I don't know how because nowadays I can't stand that track.

      I played the Wii version first too. I might take a look back on that sometime.

    Sonic unleashed did not lead to colors and generations as sonic 1 led to 2 and 3k, colors and generations are a downgrade on everything but the level design, they are jokes.

    Sonic unleashed was my first sonic game and I like the werehog. Also the night time levels was a god of war rip-off and chip was a boring character,he wasn't funny at all.
