The radiator issue is real and something to be aware of when buying an Xterra, but they are truly an excellent vehicle. I bought a 2006 with 70k miles and simply bypassed the radiator with a $30 part from auto zone when I got it home. Problem solved. It’s been the least hassle truck I’ve ever owned since.
I bought a 2006 Frontier brand new and have never had a problem with it, in fact, the radiator tranny cooler can be bypassed easily for free with no parts involved by just switching two hoses, as there is already an external tranny cooler in the grill that can handle that duty alone. Yes, you need to be aware of this situation, and make sure you do the bypass, but it is so simple and doesn't require any parts, that it is a no-brainer. Otherwise, these vehicles are assembled tough, as mine is now 12 years old with no squeaks, rattles, and still runs like new.
As the owner of an 06 Xterra since 2010, I've been through this. Seal failed, strawberry milkshake for me. Replaced the radiator and flushed trans 3 times. Got 2 years out of it before trans took a dump. Luckly for me, I was running a garage at the time and was able to do all my own work. Still cost me $3700 for a used trans. While replacing the trans, I put an external trans cooler on the truck to completely bypass the system. After that, any xterra or frontier between 05 and 10, I highly suggested to customers to let me put the external cooler on for them. $70 later and you completely eliminate the possibility of this happening. Since this issue I have put over 141000 miles on her. Truck currently has 236000 miles with no signs of stopping.

Thanks for the info. I bought a 2006 Xterra 4x4 for $3,000. I verified all the fluid looked good before buying it. First thing I did was replaced the radiator. I changed all the fluids in the engine, transmission, transfer case and differentials. The vehicle runs cooler than before. Never gets passed 195 degrees. I added a lift and bigger tires. I've put about 15k mostly off road miles on it. Never been happier. As long as you check everything before you buy it you can get a really good deal on one of these. Mine currently has 175k miles and runs like a beast.
Any advice on how to check if the transmission fluid is clear? I am planning to go see some pathfinders this week and I really doubt that sellers will be happy with me flushing out the transmission fluid just to see its color lol. Or is it enough to just check the engine coolant color?
@micius77 Hi there. There is a dip stick on the passenger side for the transmission. You need a 10 MM to remove it, but it's hard to see because there is no actual bright yellow handle. Look it up and someone will have a picture of what it looks like. It looks like a cap with a bolt. Just make sure it looks like AT fluid. Mine was a little dirty. Changed it out when I got home. It now has 199k miles. Almost 200k and still runs great. About to give it to my son for his first car. He loves it.
I have had two xterras, one 2007 and one 2013, both excellent vehicles and the radiator bypass is really quick and easy, even given that issue the 4.0 is still better than most vehicles out there
This problem has been resolved since 2010. Nissan Frontier is currently shown as the most reliable vehicle in its class but dont let that fact interfere with this 10 year old problem.
A very easy fix. I just bypassed the radiator and went directly to and from the transmission oil cooler. This can never be an issue on my 2007 Xterra and it runs like a top with 124K miles on it.
I have an 08' Nissan Frontier which just turned over to 38,000 miles. Thankfully 2 yrs ago I read about this problem, and while I was at the dealer changing all the gearboxes to synthetic and other service, I had them reroute the transmission cooler outside of the radiator. This is suppose to take care of the problem, as well as keep the transmission temps cooler.
I have a 05 pathfinder se. I changed out my radiator and connected a external transmission cooler to those trans lines also. Still have the original trans and no pink milkshake yet...good vid
Stanley Wrubel almost thought I needed a new tranny (I was told I needed only by AAMCO) I just replaced the valve body and new transmission fluid and bam , good as new , no more lights and all gears
Yea the vq lineup are fairly easy to work on yourself and you can find them everywhere...also if you ever have to change out a crank sensor on a 05 and up pathfinder you can rob them from 03 and up maximas and they'll work.
I have a 2005 Pathfinder changed out the radiator and had Tran fluid service. No sign of the problem at 80000 when done. Now at 107000 and going strong. Oh timing chain issue did surface at 60000 but covered under extended warranty. Anyway I have had no other issues with this Truck and I really like it so gunning for 200k!!!
I bought a 2006 Xterra brand new. It has the 6 speed manual transmission so does not have this transmission issue. 16 years and 420 000 km later, it still runs beautifully. It ranks up there with a '72 Volvo I had, which just kept going.
Sad decline in Nissan quality. Last year I gave away a 1987 Nissan “Hardbody” Pickup, with the 4 cylinder Z24 engine, Auto Tran, with 380K miles. Original engine, never rebuilt. Tran had been rebuilt twice at about 170K each time. Was a very good truck. Gave it to a friend for some work he had done for me, and he sold it to a Gardener who was going to continue to use it hauling his lawn equipment. This truck is now over 30 years old.
My dad bought an old hardbody from a neighbor 17 years ago for $25. It had 280k miles on it and died with 330k ish on it. Maintenance free, best $25 my dad says he's ever spent. It was his work vehicle, and turned it into a trailer, and it's still being used by the guys who took his business over after we moved. I'd bet that rear end has well over 400+k miles on it by now!
I echo what others have said: my 2006 Xterra SE has served me well for 13 years. Bought it used with 35,000 miles and it’s now at 182,000. I fear the worst because suddenly the transmission is showing signs of failure. I’ll know for sure soon - but regardless, it’s been a great trouble free vehicle.
I bought my 07 Frontier new, now have over 100 thousand miles on it, not a problem. I did replace the radiator at the 8 year mark just for peace of mind ( cheap insurance) but have had no issues at all, best vehicle I've ever owned. The only thing I don't like about the truck is the turning radius.
I have an 06 Frontier with almost 220k miles. It's still running with the original manual transmission and clutch. AC isn't working at the moment, but other than that, no real issues. Turning radius is not tight, but compared to my wife's 2017 F-150, it turns on a dime.
I have a 09 xterra just found this problem yesterday with is after 163000 miles didn't get coolant in my transmission but did get a little in my coolant did the bypass and it's all good now getting a new radiator in a couple days still the best vehicle I ever owned and will not trade for anything else
Adam Zempa I’ve been told that the higher the torque the more likely it is to fail so the Pathfinder’s CVT is more likely to fail than the Versa. Although they all fail if you don’t take well care of them as they are more fragile than a regular auto.
You mean the CVTs in all of their vehicles. The Rogue actually has less issues than many other Nissans. Nissans are junk. A good one would be a pre-2001 model.
I haven't had a single issue with my 2012 Frontier with 105k miles on it. Literally zero defects. Every manufacturer has quality control issues slip through the cracks. Nissan still makes a quality product with great value.
How many cars do you deal with every year? Probably just one, your own. These mechanics at least deal with two different cars every day. Your sample size is limited to just your Nissan. This guy might see 100 people pull in their Nissan with the same issue in a year. That's why he can more confidently say maybe there's an issue that's not present in other make.
Frontier does NOT have a CVT...so right there you are one hoop clear. Watch Pine Hollow Diagnostics...Ivan is his name...tears apart a fucked CVT...You will see how bad CVTs are.
Daily is a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder V8. 160k on the clock and runs 90% new👍 Purchased 4 years ago with 125k miles, one owner, accident free. Just routine and proactive maintenance. Exclusive of the thirsty optional factory 5.6l it's enjoyable and reliable to drive. The V8 option was available from 08 to 12 to compete with the V8 4Runner. It was an option that's harder to find.
Or just buy a 3 inch cooler hose and a nipple with a clamp. Zip tie the excess tubing to the top of the intercooler plastic mount. Half and hour and around 30 bucks. Easy fix.

I have an 02 Xterra with a 5 speed stick. Non-supercharged 3.3 L V6 with 400,000 miles on the original clutch and the original transmission. Original engine too
My neighbor bought his Frontier 4.0L new in 2006. 260K miles later, with normal maintenance, he's still trucking along! My 2000 Frontier 2.4L is still trucking along at 290K miles, which they were basically hardbodys with a body redesign. They're good reliable transportation IMO.
I have an 07 xterra with just under 300k miles and only have done regular maintenance. Original trans and engine no issues except rust as it spent its whole life in New Hampshire up until 2 years ago.
That might depend on whereabouts in the word you are, check out the navara and pathfinder chassis rot issues, trucks can literally snap in half!! Diesel engines in both d22 and d40 can let go in a big way also.

Thanks so much for getting the word out. I have been leaving comments on the radiator/transmission problem. It’s great to see this video. Many people didn’t believe me. I told them to Google it. Nissan surely left my wallet empty. I assumed they were fixing the problem but they just put the same parts in except they were rebuilt and it lasted a little more than a year and less than 10,000 miles. The manufacturer and dealer could care less. I did find out that you can buy a tool that will determine if there is any coolant in the transmission fluid before it’s noticeable to the eye. Since the presence of coolant there is the qualifier for the warranty that might help someone. Thanks again. Really like your vids.
If you have an manual transmission, SMOD isn’t a problem. Also, if it’s I believe a 2011 or later, it doesn’t have the issue either. Otherwise, it’s a cheap fix to bypass.
Guess I’m one of the lucky ones. My 2007 Frontier 4.0 has 225k miles running strong and I haven’t changed my radiator yet. It’s definitely next maintenance item on my list! Thanks for the info! Keep up the good work!
I have a 2007 xterra. Amazing vehicle! I was able to catch the problem with the radiator cross contamination, and I just replaced the factory radiator with a denso one. Runs like a dream though
JACTO makes some of the worse automatic and CVT transmissions on the planet as you guessed already that JACTO are made by Nissan. They are found in some of the older Mazdas, Jeeps, Dodge, Crysler products. steer clear away from cars that has a JACTO transmssion.

Listen guys If you have auto transmission just bypass the internal cooler which inside the radiator, and don’t worry if your car doesn’t have external trany cooler , and even if you don’t have Nissan , because i read about cases where the contamination happened in other brands but of course not compared to Nissan. Why am i telling you this, because i have 2008 pathfinder and i bypassed the intern cooler before the catostrafy happens and i was worried about my transmission will get hot , but guess what? It did’ not and i noticed that the engine temp. Gauge had been risen a little bet , so i figured out that it is more heater than cooler for warming the trans. In the very cold weather, and the engine cooling system lost a heat sink after the bypass. My vehicle has external cooler from factory which doing the real cooling for ATF
I have a 2010 Xterra Off Road 154k with a 6 speed, so that strawberry milkshake will never be an issue for me. What I do have a problem with is the evap leaks, both of my Xterra's have had. (My other X is a 2003 with 134k) and my 2010 has the ridiculous TPMS that we can't seem to get rid of. Both of my Xterras are simply amazing vehicles, reliable dependable, never broken down on me!
The radiators were fixed for the 2010 model year and previous models either had the warranty replace the radiator at customer request for free or 50% copay on the part with free labor. The transmission was covered by the extended warranty.
I have had a few Nissan maximas and altimas but never had any mechanical engine or transmission failure but almost every one I have owned has had electrical problem with senors and door locks wont work so check engine light was always on and same thing goes for my infiniti g37 and my sisters fx35.
It is actually an ATF warmer. There is another cooler (usually) mounted on the front. When coolant mixes with ATF, TCM will need to be replaced as well. Had this issues on several frontiers
An issue i did have that gave me a headache for months was it was overheating and I had unknowingly put a pressure cap on the radiator when it calls for a regular cap, in which case the pressure cap does not let the water back in the back flow tank and causes it to heat up. I was about to give up on the truck but my mechanic found an informative video somewhere and told me
Hi. I've got an unmodified 1998 Nissan Pathfinder, 164,000 miles, 3.3L V6, 5 speed automatic transmission. Owned by an elderly couple...treated well. Runs smoothly. 10w-30 oil/filter is new and full. Same with transmission fluid. When it's first started it knocks or loudly rattles for 3 seconds. Then it stops. Once warm it will only do the startup rattle about 50% of the time. Exact same noise returns from about 1,800 to 3,200 RPM and then stops. Also, the noise quiets and sometimes disappears between 1,800 - 3,200 RPM if I let off of the accelerator and coast. It also will not do it sometimes if I'm going up a steep hill slowly with the RPMs are in that midrange, under the hill's load. The noise increases in speed and loudness with increasing RPMs. It sounds like 1 or maybe 2 cylinders of the 6, to me. The main bearings and rod bearings were changed. Looked good, some rod bearing wear on a couple but not serious. No rod or crank shaft slop was noted before or after replacement. Made no difference in the noise. The crank was NOT sanded/polished. It throws a P1400 code for EGRC Solenoid Valve error. I don't notice any idling or power issues though. It returns within a few minutes after clearing the code. Could this cause a knocking noise at certain times like I have? It runs smooth cold and hot. I've narrowed it down to 5 things based on its part time occurrence: 1. Flex plate? 2. Timing belt tensioner failing (unknown when last changed)? 3. Torque converter? 4. Hydraulic lifters? 5. EGRC Solenoid Valve? I have two short videos I recorded it and can share if you want to hear it. Thanks!
I'd take a brand new Nissan Frontier and take that antiquated engine/transmission and put it up against any other truck in its class. The Frontier will outlast them all. It simplicity is its beauty.
I have a 2005 xterra I by passed the rubber hoses that take the transmission cooler to the radiator, takes 10 minutes Nissan should of done this on a recall.
I'm on my second Xterra my first was a Gen 1 an 03 my wife and I put over 400k on that thing it was a tank. 5 speed no milkshake tranny. Only thing we did was a timing belt at an amazing 223k miles. The 06 Gen 2 is hammering along at almost 200k. Again 6 speed manual no auto. Its biggest issue is the rear axle seals they are leaking other than that it too is a tank. I love my Xterra wint part with it until the earth reclaims it!!!!!
I had a 2006 Nissan 350z that burned oil. I had to add 2 quarts in between oil changes to keep the level normal. I traded it in on a 2012 a couple years ago that does not have this problem. That engine in the 2006 was a 300hp rev up that they only made for one year..I wonder why..
@@scottharrisohn6972 The pickup trucks and real SUVs still have manual gear driven transmissions or hydraulic gear driven automatic transmissions. Nissan Armada, Xterra, Frontier, still have gear driven transmissions. Not to pick on only Nissan, all CVTs are garbage except in the homely Prius. I hate the Prius but I must give it credit credit for being possibly the most reliable vehicle in North America. It has a planetary gear driven CVT. It seems Subaru stays together also. But Prius has to be the most reliable CVT.

This is misleading clickbait my dude. You should mention the years affected in the description or title. The Frontier and Xterra, post 2008, are literally the most reliable trucks on the market; with only the FJ Cruiser matching the dependability.
I know this is a year old, but the FJ Cruiser was far from Toyota’s most reliable. Toyota perfects their cars over time, just look at the gradual increase in quality and reliability of corollas over the years. The FJ Cruiser only existed for less than a decade. This is not enough time for Toyota to perfect it. I’m not saying it’s unreliable, I’m saying that it’s reliability is within comparison of other similar vehicles like the Mitsubishi Montero and Suzuki Grand Vitara.
Honda 5 speed automatic transmission were not faulty 3 gear clutches, it was bad shaft bushings that keep it applied because what caused the 4 speed transmissions to burn up second and third gear clutches?
There is also a common issue with these transmissions involving a solenoid located on the TCM that is inside the transmission, mounted above the valve body. Over time, as the solenoid actuates, it causes ware on its circuit bar and can eventually snap it. This causes your transmission to lock into a fail safe mode that will keep the transmission in 4th gear and is causes a hard fault code. The dealer will tell you that a new transmission must be purchased. At over $6k usd, the repair was more than the vehicle is worth. I was able to fix my wife's xterra by soldering the broken bar. Just another nissan transmission issue to be aware of.
So run away or change radiator? Im about to buy an 05 with 141k miles, well maintenanced by one owner. Think I'll just see if the radiator has been replaced. If not, I'll replace it. 😁
I can validate his findings. I am not a mechanic. I am an owner of 2007 Frontier. Fortunately for me, i bought the extended warranty which my mechanic used to replace the factory radiator. He said let the insurer settle it with nissan. It was 87k mi then. My truck now has 194k. Other than that radiator issue, truck runs great. Disappointing nissan did not recall it too. Be safe all !
SuperLavagancia hopefully its been fix n address by previous owner coz normally radiator will fail within 5 yrs on automatic trans only. If not, the fix is to replaced OEM radiator with aftermarket radiator. You can even replace it by yourself or local mechanic. Others have placed separate trans cooler. Get it done b4 contamination n your cost will be minimum. Good luck co-frontier owner.
@@mb1636 I'm a apprentice mechanic, thankfully I'll be able to deal with that on my own. The truck now has 160k miles on it, so I suspect it has been changed before since it seems that the front clip has had several parts replaced from what looks like a small wreck.
My Nissan Murano has a CVT transmission that failed with 94k miles on it. Nissan USA would not cover the repair, although they admitted that valve body in that transmission caused them to extend the warranty due to their failures. They no longer do the repairs under the extended warranties, thereby making the vehicle repair not feasible. It’s a total loss. 94k is not a reasonable life expectancy for a well maintained expensive Nissan Murano with known transmission problems. Shame on Nissan!!!
Get a new radiator as a matter of course! Just blank off the oil pipe inlet and exits in the new radiator. Do not connect up the gearbox oil pipes to the new radiator ! Get and fit an after market oil cooler. Make it a decent size! Large enough to handle heavy towing in the summer. While you’re at it upgrade the engine oil cooler as well. A second hand Ford (shudder) Falcon electric radiator fan to replace the original. These move a lot of air. A few hundred dollars well spent. It’s easy enough to do as a home job. 😁👍
Sounds like a toyota-fanboy. I've owned 2nd gen frontiers and Xterras and as long as you change the radiator the vehicle is Solid. Titan-swapped Xterras are a force to be reckoned with.
francois untel he’s referring to the 2005-2008 model years, but he incorrectly stated the issue. The radiator doesn’t have to be replaced, just a $40 part needs to be upgraded. 2009 to present models have zero issues.
@@OMthree28 Yes, but a shop mechanic doesn't typically recommend bypassing cooling systems on vehicles for the simple fact of liability. If everything is connected as intended by the OEM it's a large amount of protection in an industry rife with complaints of, "you did my brakes and now my turn signal doesn't work!"
Yeh ur right.. when i bought my 2010 xterra with 50k on it all i checked was for the milkshake and after everything was ok i got a new KOYO radiator online and had nissan install it and also had em do a tranny flush. For 200$.. I still have my truck and love it.
But I will say, I had a 2007 Frontier 4x4 manual 6-speed that had a great transmission that I put over 262,000 miles on it with only two clutch replacements. But that's because I didn't drive it like a maniac, changed the fluid on a regular basis and only used synthetic in the Transmission, Engine, and differentials.
That's the secret, stick to the manual trans and you'll be fine. Autotragics have always been dogshit, this is nothing new and I don't know why people deal with manualmatics. They all need expensive service intervals, and are far more complicated than learning to row through gears. Taught my girl how to row gears and now she's got that kungfu grip
@@RFJersey They made Frontiers in 1997 but Nissan called them [Desert Runners] and you had to special-order them in the United States, but in my comment if you cared to actually read it, I wrote (2007).
I own a 2009 Nissan Frontier Pro 4x kc with 39,000 miles and my wife have a 2009 Nissan Pathfinder LE V6 with 96,000 miles. We never had any major issues with both. Replaced the tires and batteries a couple of times . I recently bypassed the atf lines that goes through the radiator and installed atf coolers in front of the condenser just for precautions and hope to drive em both till the wheels fall off. I love Scotty too but I'll stand by my Nissans
I think this review of the xterra is not really fair because you haven't pointed out any other problems with this car except for a faulty radiator. Instead of bashing this car you should recommend buying one since it has relatively few issues and just replacing the radiator.

Thanks for the info. I bought a 2006 Xterra 4x4 for $3,000. I verified all the fluid looked good before buying it. First thing I did was replaced the radiator. I changed all the fluids in the engine, transmission, transfer case and differentials. The vehicle runs cooler than before. Never gets passed 195 degrees. I added a lift and bigger tires. I've put about 15k mostly off road miles on it. Never been happier.
As long as you check everything before you buy it you can get a really good deal on one of these. Mine currently has 175k miles and runs like a beast.

Any advice on how to check if the transmission fluid is clear? I am planning to go see some pathfinders this week and I really doubt that sellers will be happy with me flushing out the transmission fluid just to see its color lol. Or is it enough to just check the engine coolant color?
@micius77 Hi there. There is a dip stick on the passenger side for the transmission. You need a 10 MM to remove it, but it's hard to see because there is no actual bright yellow handle. Look it up and someone will have a picture of what it looks like. It looks like a cap with a bolt. Just make sure it looks like AT fluid. Mine was a little dirty. Changed it out when I got home. It now has 199k miles. Almost 200k and still runs great. About to give it to my son for his first car. He loves it.

I have had two xterras, one 2007 and one 2013, both excellent vehicles and the radiator bypass is really quick and easy, even given that issue the 4.0 is still better than most vehicles out there
2010 Xterra SE with 200K, replaced radiator for peace of mind. Running good. Maintenance is the key.
My exterra is now 268ooo+miles and runs so smooth like new.
This problem has been resolved since 2010. Nissan Frontier is currently shown as the most reliable vehicle in its class but dont let that fact interfere with this 10 year old problem.

A very easy fix. I just bypassed the radiator and went directly to and from the transmission oil cooler. This can never be an issue on my 2007 Xterra and it runs like a top with 124K miles on it.
I have an 08' Nissan Frontier which just turned over to 38,000 miles. Thankfully 2 yrs ago I read about this problem, and while I was at the dealer changing all the gearboxes to synthetic and other service, I had them reroute the transmission cooler outside of the radiator. This is suppose to take care of the problem, as well as keep the transmission temps cooler.
I've had 3 Frontiers. 2011 SV with 105k miles. 2014 SL with 122k. 2018 Pro 4x and I just rolled over 5k. All 3 trucks. Not a single problem.
All after the dates he mentioned, so I'm sure they were good.

Stanley Wrubel almost thought I needed a new tranny (I was told I needed only by AAMCO) I just replaced the valve body and new transmission fluid and bam , good as new , no more lights and all gears

I just replaced the factory radiator on my 05 Pathfinder with a CSF all aluminum radiator BAM! Problem solved!
Yea the vq lineup are fairly easy to work on yourself and you can find them everywhere...also if you ever have to change out a crank sensor on a 05 and up pathfinder you can rob them from 03 and up maximas and they'll work.
I have a 2005 Pathfinder changed out the radiator and had Tran fluid service. No sign of the problem at 80000 when done. Now at 107000 and going strong. Oh timing chain issue did surface at 60000 but covered under extended warranty. Anyway I have had no other issues with this Truck and I really like it so gunning for 200k!!!
I bought a 2006 Xterra brand new. It has the 6 speed manual transmission so does not have this transmission issue. 16 years and 420 000 km later, it still runs beautifully. It ranks up there with a '72 Volvo I had, which just kept going.
Sad decline in Nissan quality. Last year I gave away a 1987 Nissan “Hardbody” Pickup, with the 4 cylinder Z24 engine, Auto Tran, with 380K miles. Original engine, never rebuilt. Tran had been rebuilt twice at about 170K each time. Was a very good truck. Gave it to a friend for some work he had done for me, and he sold it to a Gardener who was going to continue to use it hauling his lawn equipment. This truck is now over 30 years old.

It's not just Nissan, this issue effected multiple cars including the Toyota 4runner and Mercedes E class.
My dad bought an old hardbody from a neighbor 17 years ago for $25. It had 280k miles on it and died with 330k ish on it. Maintenance free, best $25 my dad says he's ever spent. It was his work vehicle, and turned it into a trailer, and it's still being used by the guys who took his business over after we moved. I'd bet that rear end has well over 400+k miles on it by now!

I echo what others have said: my 2006 Xterra SE has served me well for 13 years. Bought it used with 35,000 miles and it’s now at 182,000. I fear the worst because suddenly the transmission is showing signs of failure. I’ll know for sure soon - but regardless, it’s been a great trouble free vehicle.
I bought my 07 Frontier new, now have over 100 thousand miles on it, not a problem. I did replace the radiator at the 8 year mark just for peace of mind ( cheap insurance) but have had no issues at all, best vehicle I've ever owned. The only thing I don't like about the truck is the turning radius.

I have an 06 Frontier with almost 220k miles. It's still running with the original manual transmission and clutch. AC isn't working at the moment, but other than that, no real issues. Turning radius is not tight, but compared to my wife's 2017 F-150, it turns on a dime.

@@NewWorldFungus It's because of the F-Alpha frame/platform it's on- wider than the old D22 1st gen, so turning radius is affected.
I also changed the radiator on my 07 nissmo and it currently has 198,000 problem free miles!! Best truck I've ever owned.
I have a 09 xterra just found this problem yesterday with is after 163000 miles didn't get coolant in my transmission but did get a little in my coolant did the bypass and it's all good now getting a new radiator in a couple days still the best vehicle I ever owned and will not trade for anything else

Adam Zempa I’ve been told that the higher the torque the more likely it is to fail so the Pathfinder’s CVT is more likely to fail than the Versa. Although they all fail if you don’t take well care of them as they are more fragile than a regular auto.
My father in-law's 2013 Nissan Sentra had it's CVT replaced at just under 50k miles.
Working for Nissan all I can say is all new Nissans suck. Nissan is not the same anymore. Especially now that Renault is involved.
You mean the CVTs in all of their vehicles. The Rogue actually has less issues than many other Nissans. Nissans are junk. A good one would be a pre-2001 model.

I haven't had a single issue with my 2012 Frontier with 105k miles on it. Literally zero defects. Every manufacturer has quality control issues slip through the cracks. Nissan still makes a quality product with great value.
How many cars do you deal with every year? Probably just one, your own.
These mechanics at least deal with two different cars every day. Your sample size is limited to just your Nissan. This guy might see 100 people pull in their Nissan with the same issue in a year. That's why he can more confidently say maybe there's an issue that's not present in other make.
Frontier does NOT have a CVT...so right there you are one hoop clear. Watch Pine Hollow Diagnostics...Ivan is his name...tears apart a fucked CVT...You will see how bad CVTs are.

Daily is a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder V8. 160k on the clock and runs 90% new👍 Purchased 4 years ago with 125k miles, one owner, accident free. Just routine and proactive maintenance. Exclusive of the thirsty optional factory 5.6l it's enjoyable and reliable to drive. The V8 option was available from 08 to 12 to compete with the V8 4Runner. It was an option that's harder to find.
Strawberry milkshake can be avoided by simply bypassing the factory transmission cooler and adding an external one.

Or just buy a 3 inch cooler hose and a nipple with a clamp. Zip tie the excess tubing to the top of the intercooler plastic mount. Half and hour and around 30 bucks. Easy fix.

I have a 2007 xterra with 170000 miles original radiator. Everything is still original and runs like a charm other then a u joint and a control arm. And oil changes this suv is the best I ever owned.
2009 Pathfinder, I bypassed the radiator at 50,000. No issues at 155,000 miles.
I have an 02 Xterra with a 5 speed stick. Non-supercharged 3.3 L V6 with 400,000 miles on the original clutch and the original transmission. Original engine too
My neighbor bought his Frontier 4.0L new in 2006. 260K miles later, with normal maintenance, he's still trucking along! My 2000 Frontier 2.4L is still trucking along at 290K miles, which they were basically hardbodys with a body redesign. They're good reliable transportation IMO.
Just replace the damn radiator before it fails. I have a 2005 Xterra SE 4x4. Good Koyorad Radiator and no issues.

Get a manual transmission! Even if you have to get an older Nissan. Any Nissan with 3 pedals is generally pretty solid.

That might depend on whereabouts in the word you are, check out the navara and pathfinder chassis rot issues, trucks can literally snap in half!! Diesel engines in both d22 and d40 can let go in a big way also.

Thanks so much for getting the word out. I have been leaving comments on the radiator/transmission problem. It’s great to see this video. Many people didn’t believe me. I told them to Google it. Nissan surely left my wallet empty. I assumed they were fixing the problem but they just put the same parts in except they were rebuilt and it lasted a little more than a year and less than 10,000 miles. The manufacturer and dealer could care less. I did find out that you can buy a tool that will determine if there is any coolant in the transmission fluid before it’s noticeable to the eye. Since the presence of coolant there is the qualifier for the warranty that might help someone. Thanks again. Really like your vids.

If you have an manual transmission, SMOD isn’t a problem. Also, if it’s I believe a 2011 or later, it doesn’t have the issue either. Otherwise, it’s a cheap fix to bypass.

I have a 2007 xterra. Amazing vehicle! I was able to catch the problem with the radiator cross contamination, and I just replaced the factory radiator with a denso one. Runs like a dream though

JACTO makes some of the worse automatic and CVT transmissions on the planet as you guessed already that JACTO are made by Nissan. They are found in some of the older Mazdas, Jeeps, Dodge, Crysler products. steer clear away from cars that has a JACTO transmssion.

Yes. The external tranny cooler removes the line from the radiator.

this is the clearest most specific mechanical explanation of this issue i've ever heard/seen. thanks. i have an 08 Frontier and read about this issue on Frontier forums. i read about every preventative fix out there. in the end, i just changed the radiator for about 600 bucks. done. great vehicle.

If you have auto transmission just bypass the internal cooler which inside the radiator, and don’t worry if your car doesn’t have external trany cooler , and even if you don’t have Nissan , because i read about cases where the contamination happened in other brands but of course not compared to Nissan.
Why am i telling you this, because i have 2008 pathfinder and i bypassed the intern cooler before the catostrafy happens and i was worried about my transmission will get hot , but guess what? It did’ not and i noticed that the engine temp. Gauge had been risen a little bet , so i figured out that it is more heater than cooler for warming the trans. In the very cold weather, and the engine cooling system lost a heat sink after the bypass.
My vehicle has external cooler from factory which doing the real cooling for ATF

I have a 2010 Xterra Off Road 154k with a 6 speed, so that strawberry milkshake will never be an issue for me. What I do have a problem with is the evap leaks, both of my Xterra's have had. (My other X is a 2003 with 134k) and my 2010 has the ridiculous TPMS that we can't seem to get rid of. Both of my Xterras are simply amazing vehicles, reliable dependable, never broken down on me!

The radiators were fixed for the 2010 model year and previous models either had the warranty replace the radiator at customer request for free or 50% copay on the part with free labor. The transmission was covered by the extended warranty.
I have had a few Nissan maximas and altimas but never had any mechanical engine or transmission failure but almost every one I have owned has had electrical problem with senors and door locks wont work so check engine light was always on and same thing goes for my infiniti g37 and my sisters fx35.

It is actually an ATF warmer. There is another cooler (usually) mounted on the front. When coolant mixes with ATF, TCM will need to be replaced as well. Had this issues on several frontiers
An issue i did have that gave me a headache for months was it was overheating and I had unknowingly put a pressure cap on the radiator when it calls for a regular cap, in which case the pressure cap does not let the water back in the back flow tank and causes it to heat up. I was about to give up on the truck but my mechanic found an informative video somewhere and told me
Hi. I've got an unmodified 1998 Nissan Pathfinder, 164,000 miles, 3.3L V6, 5 speed automatic transmission. Owned by an elderly couple...treated well. Runs smoothly.
10w-30 oil/filter is new and full. Same with transmission fluid.
When it's first started it knocks or loudly rattles for 3 seconds. Then it stops. Once warm it will only do the startup rattle about 50% of the time. Exact same noise returns from about 1,800 to 3,200 RPM and then stops. Also, the noise quiets and sometimes disappears between 1,800 - 3,200 RPM if I let off of the accelerator and coast. It also will not do it sometimes if I'm going up a steep hill slowly with the RPMs are in that midrange, under the hill's load.
The noise increases in speed and loudness with increasing RPMs. It sounds like 1 or maybe 2 cylinders of the 6, to me.
The main bearings and rod bearings were changed. Looked good, some rod bearing wear on a couple but not serious. No rod or crank shaft slop was noted before or after replacement. Made no difference in the noise. The crank was NOT sanded/polished.
It throws a P1400 code for EGRC Solenoid Valve error. I don't notice any idling or power issues though. It returns within a few minutes after clearing the code. Could this cause a knocking noise at certain times like I have? It runs smooth cold and hot.
I've narrowed it down to 5 things based on its part time occurrence:
1. Flex plate?
2. Timing belt tensioner failing (unknown when last changed)?
3. Torque converter?
4. Hydraulic lifters?
5. EGRC Solenoid Valve?

I'd take a brand new Nissan Frontier and take that antiquated engine/transmission and put it up against any other truck in its class. The Frontier will outlast them all. It simplicity is its beauty.

I have a 2005 xterra I by passed the rubber hoses that take the transmission cooler to the radiator, takes 10 minutes Nissan should of done this on a recall.
I'm on my second Xterra my first was a Gen 1 an 03 my wife and I put over 400k on that thing it was a tank. 5 speed no milkshake tranny. Only thing we did was a timing belt at an amazing 223k miles. The 06 Gen 2 is hammering along at almost 200k. Again 6 speed manual no auto. Its biggest issue is the rear axle seals they are leaking other than that it too is a tank. I love my Xterra wint part with it until the earth reclaims it!!!!!

I had a 2006 Nissan 350z that burned oil. I had to add 2 quarts in between oil changes to keep the level normal. I traded it in on a 2012 a couple years ago that does not have this problem. That engine in the 2006 was a 300hp rev up that they only made for one year..I wonder why..

Nissan Armada, Xterra, Frontier, still have gear driven transmissions. Not to pick on only Nissan, all CVTs are garbage except in the homely Prius. I hate the Prius but I must give it credit credit for being possibly the most reliable vehicle in North America. It has a planetary gear driven CVT. It seems Subaru stays together also. But Prius has to be the most reliable CVT.
So are the other Nissan vehicles ok ? I am about to buy a Nissan pulsar 2004 .

Knock sensor around 100,000 miles in the 04 xterra. Had to replace the engine. 2nd engine had the same problem at that same mileage.

This is misleading clickbait my dude. You should mention the years affected in the description or title. The Frontier and Xterra, post 2008, are literally the most reliable trucks on the market; with only the FJ Cruiser matching the dependability.
I know this is a year old, but the FJ Cruiser was far from Toyota’s most reliable. Toyota perfects their cars over time, just look at the gradual increase in quality and reliability of corollas over the years.
The FJ Cruiser only existed for less than a decade. This is not enough time for Toyota to perfect it. I’m not saying it’s unreliable, I’m saying that it’s reliability is within comparison of other similar vehicles like the Mitsubishi Montero and Suzuki Grand Vitara.
Honda 5 speed automatic transmission were not faulty 3 gear clutches, it was bad shaft bushings that keep it applied because what caused the 4 speed transmissions to burn up second and third gear clutches?
There is also a common issue with these transmissions involving a solenoid located on the TCM that is inside the transmission, mounted above the valve body. Over time, as the solenoid actuates, it causes ware on its circuit bar and can eventually snap it. This causes your transmission to lock into a fail safe mode that will keep the transmission in 4th gear and is causes a hard fault code. The dealer will tell you that a new transmission must be purchased. At over $6k usd, the repair was more than the vehicle is worth. I was able to fix my wife's xterra by soldering the broken bar. Just another nissan transmission issue to be aware of.
So run away or change radiator? Im about to buy an 05 with 141k miles, well maintenanced by one owner. Think I'll just see if the radiator has been replaced. If not, I'll replace it. 😁
I can validate his findings. I am not a mechanic. I am an owner of 2007 Frontier. Fortunately for me, i bought the extended warranty which my mechanic used to replace the factory radiator. He said let the insurer settle it with nissan. It was 87k mi then. My truck now has 194k. Other than that radiator issue, truck runs great. Disappointing nissan did not recall it too. Be safe all !

I just bought a 08 Frontier about 2 weeks ago, I'll have to look into this and how much will cost me to do all this in the right way.
SuperLavagancia hopefully its been fix n address by previous owner coz normally radiator will fail within 5 yrs on automatic trans only. If not, the fix is to replaced OEM radiator with aftermarket radiator. You can even replace it by yourself or local mechanic. Others have placed separate trans cooler. I'm a apprentice mechanic, thankfully I'll be able to deal with that on my own.
The truck now has 160k miles on it, so I suspect it has been changed before since it seems that the front clip has had several parts replaced from what looks like a small wreck.
Bypass the integrated trans-cooler portion of the with $30 in parts. Took me an hour or so to do the work.
The only vehicle worse than some Nissans are any Chrysler product.
I own a 2000 XE & a 2015 Pro 4X. Regular maintenance. Love these vehicles.
My Nissan Murano has a CVT transmission that failed with 94k miles on it. Nissan USA would not cover the repair, although they admitted that valve body in that transmission caused them to extend the warranty due to their failures. They no longer do the repairs under the extended warranties, thereby making the vehicle repair not feasible. It’s a total loss. 94k is not a reasonable life expectancy for a well maintained expensive Nissan Murano with known transmission problems. Shame on Nissan!!!

Get a new radiator as a matter of course! Just blank off the oil pipe inlet and exits in the new radiator. Do not connect up the gearbox oil pipes to the new radiator ! Get and fit an after market oil cooler. Make it a decent size! Large enough to handle heavy towing in the summer. While you’re at it upgrade the engine oil cooler as well. A second hand Ford (shudder) Falcon electric radiator fan to replace the original. These move a lot of air. A few hundred dollars well spent. It’s easy enough to do as a home job. 😁👍

I've owned 2nd gen frontiers and Xterras and as long as you change the radiator the vehicle is Solid.
Titan-swapped Xterras are a force to be reckoned with.

francois untel he’s referring to the 2005-2008 model years, but he incorrectly stated the issue. The radiator doesn’t have to be replaced, just a $40 part needs to be upgraded. 2009 to present models have zero issues.
@@OMthree28 Yes, but a shop mechanic doesn't typically recommend bypassing cooling systems on vehicles for the simple fact of liability. If everything is connected as intended by the OEM it's a large amount of protection in an industry rife with complaints of, "you did my brakes and now my turn signal doesn't work!"
Yeh ur right.. when i bought my 2010 xterra with 50k on it all i checked was for the milkshake and after everything was ok i got a new KOYO radiator online and had nissan install it and also had em do a tranny flush. For 200$.. I still have my truck and love it.

But I will say, I had a 2007 Frontier 4x4 manual 6-speed that had a great transmission that I put over 262,000 miles on it with only two clutch replacements. But that's because I didn't drive it like a maniac, changed the fluid on a regular basis and only used synthetic in the Transmission, Engine, and differentials.
That's the secret, stick to the manual trans and you'll be fine. Autotragics have always been dogshit, this is nothing new and I don't know why people deal with manualmatics.
They all need expensive service intervals, and are far more complicated than learning to row through gears. Taught my girl how to row gears and now she's got that kungfu grip

I own a 2009 Nissan Frontier Pro 4x kc with 39,000 miles and my wife have a 2009 Nissan Pathfinder LE V6 with 96,000 miles. We never had any major issues with both. Replaced the tires and batteries a couple of times . I recently bypassed the atf lines that goes through the radiator and installed atf coolers in front of the condenser just for precautions and hope to drive em both till the wheels fall off. I love Scotty too but I'll stand by my Nissans

I think this review of the xterra is not really fair because you haven't pointed out any other problems with this car except for a faulty radiator. Instead of bashing this car you should recommend buying one since it has relatively few issues and just replacing the radiator.
